Thanks for the great lesson! Is anyone having issues locking up targets? TMS UP on various ground vehicles rarely locks up. AGM-65H same issue locking on buildings. Thanks
@@ViperDriver22 i am as well , but i think its a Maverick problem i have the same issues in the A10 with the mavericks . its almost impossible to lock a tank target up in a city the seeker will home onto buildings most of the time no matter how well you fly or how dead on your aim is, at least for me. id like to figure out what im doing wrong if it is me .all tho im loving the upgrade to my F16 im having fun learning it.
@Viper22 I have also had all kinds of issues with trying to lockup targets consistently with using the TGP. This happens quite often and I have to restart the mission to get the systems to work normally again. I feel there are some bugs causing these issues...

for me i do everything but when i press tms up long it sands wepon handoff in progress and the selected station, and it never locks, i have to make the maverick soi and lock with it, the problem with that is the mavericks sensor is kinda trash so very often it locks onto some nearby building or vehicle anyone knows why?

Have same problem after rearming. Second setup of Mavericks went stupid nomatter what I did - turn power off and on again, switch MAN to AUTO, turn TGP power off and on. Nothing can makes Mavs to work again.
I know this is kind of late but whatever. When I do another attack run, the maverick usually slews to somewhere else or does something stupid (maybe a bug, maybe how it is in real life). Anyways, I find that it fixes it to hit the missile step button (also nosewheel steering button, on the right hand side of the stick if you have a warthog). The maverick should slew to where the TGP is and lock up the target no problem.
Great video as always. Sadly most of the time it's not working that way right now with auto getting stuck on T and manual not locking even at far closer range and no clouds :( DCS forum does have a report inconstant locking has been reproduced and being looked into.
Have the exact same problem, I wish we could just refund the module(s) and tell ED to pull themselves together, F-16C is already a complete failure and is coming together in snail pace.

I have maybe a noob question, How you fly steadily while you are busy with the pod and searching for targets. Do you operate the autopilot? And if so, on what settings?
there are two autopilot buttons on the MISC panel that would be right above and to the left of your knee if you were actually in the cockpit. These can hold altitude and hold your steering where ever you want.
Really appreciating shorter, focused training videos. :) You should have a play around with Mark points in the Hornet, Redkite did a good video on it, but I wonder if we're going to be able to place a Mark point with the Recce/Event button down the track.
AFAIK in the real plane that RECCE button creates a mark on the recordings made by the plane during the mission for debriefing and also works in conjunction with the HMDCS.

If you already have the F/A-18C and money was a factor would you get the F-16 Viper or the A-10C? All get them both eventually. But I figure with the F/A-18C I got all the multirol stuff. And the A-10C gives me more A/G experience. But the F-16 is sexy. Tough choice. What would you do? I have the A-10A but that cockpit sucks, wasn't worth the $15 bucks really. Only the $80 dollar high fidelity matter and are worth serious gold. Its so awesome.
2 days ago I would say F/A-18, but now that F-16C viper has everything that hornet has except some MFCD pages and AG Radar, I would go for viper. + Hornet isn't the same without supercarrier.
@@Spudknocker I do like A/A combat very much. A/G is cool, but I love to splash bandits. Plus I need to prepare for multiplayer when I get the courage.
I have all 3 of them. The Viper and the Hornet have a lot in common in terms of capabilities, the A 10 is a completely different beast and offers a very different experience. The A 10's slow nature and missing radar are annoying, and if you are an impatient guy, the A 10 is not for you. Because of that, I find myself flying mostly F-16 recently, but there are often times where I want that brutal brrt action and neither the F-16 nor the F/A-18 come even remotely close to the GAU-8. Also keep in mind, that the F-16 still is very unpolished and lacks many features, so the A 10 is the more convenient choice right now. But if you prefer the A 10, I would wait until the A10 II comes out, should save you a few bucks if you don't have to upgrade.
I would personally go with the F-16. I used to fly the hornet and preferred it to the F-16, but there is just something about the F-16 that keeps bringing me back to it. You don't have to mess with your MFD's and stuff to fire weapons, you just use the HOTAS 90% of the time. Engagements are much cleaner.
I appreciate the effort but honestly it's not helpful at all for someone who's brand new to the module. Switching between screens too fast, using abbreviations that a new player would not understand... It needs to be more step by step. Do you have a video like that?
After shooting one mav and then pressing cursor zero on my tgp to find a new target the next mav i try to fire only slews to the cz zone not the target. Any fixes for this?
I tried Mav D today for the first time. Following your instructions, i found my target with the TGP (single tank on a wide open field - for optimal contrast...), pressed DMS UP, watched the "Handoff in progress" message on my WPN page for the mav pop up (auto mode). After that i got a "T"and the MAV seeker is looking some meters OFF the TGP target. I´m well within range (5NM) and nothing changes again. Tried this over and over, MAV seeker always is OFF compared to the TGP and won´t actually lock. I´m sure to have missed something but just can´t figure out what...
I have the same Problem where the Maverick is looking a few meters off, maybe something failed in the alingment, could it be that you have to align them on the ground?
I still can't use the TGP with mavericks, this really frustrates me. The Maverick never locks on, the cross hairs never close. I can use the Maverick without the TGP, but nothing goes with using the TGP. It doesn't matter if you use auto or manual. I am using X-56 HOTAS and ever since ED came out with the F-16, they don't work well with it.
First I would like to thank you for this amazing tutorial. I have a question for a state that I sometimes get the TGP into. Question on the use of the TGP with AUTO mode (AGM 65-D). (Using open BETA 11/16/2020 [Steam release]) I have tested it out a few times and I sometimes get it into a state where I can control it when the HUD is SOI, but when making the TGP SOI I can no longer steer the TGP. I need to push TMS RIGHT SHORT which will let me move the TGP. This has its own problem as the AGM sensor is no longer SLAVED to the TGP and LOCK HANDOFF (in AUTO mode) causes the weapon to FAIL to acquire the LOCK. Is there a way to restore expected functionality (steering the TGP while AGM slaved to TGP) when entering this state?
just can't get auto handoff to work at all, hasnt worked a single time. idk if the new ir stuff is messing it up or what but i've watched like 4 different videos and tried the training mission with no luck. just says handoff in progress and then doesnt do anything, switching soi over to the maverick and manually locking works fine tho, even when i can't make out the target on the mfd myself
hey spud could you help me pls ...? I can"t get into the SMS page in the MFD of the F16-C even that I press the AG master and all the knobs of the HUD to my right near the stick are the way they should be ...ALL this that i " lost " the SMS page happend all of a sudden ...I do not know what have I done wrong ... nothing is shown on the MFD concerning the AA or AG !!!! NOT PRE-BORE-VIS ...i DO NOT HAVE THE osb2 for activate the AGM-65 MODE !!!????? JUST LIKE THAT SUDDENLY . Do I have to reinstall DCS all over ? what about my planes or maps that I bought ? could u pls direct me ? thks in addvance ...I"m new with DCS and I learned a lot with your videos in the tube .
silly Question or not ? how do you use Tpod manually not using waypoint or preset destination , so you see target of opportunity while flying to a waypoint and you want to attack that Target ?
@@aletricio76 i was having an issue like this as well , im not 100% sure but i think it has to do with the Tpod being in either CCIP or CCRP i think in CCIP the Tpod is locked and used for ranging information only , you have to change it to CCRP to be able to slew it around .
I would like to see the F-4 Phantom II as a high fidelty cockit ($80 bucks) in vietnam. The technology is crude but would still be an awesome ride. Drop Napalm bombs...that would be a trip.
Idk if this has already been asked but how does this work with moving targets. For your TGP to track them it needs to be in point track mode (you switch to it ALSO with TMS fwd). Then if I press TMS fwd the TDP goes back to area track instead of doing the handof
Can you troubleshoot me here real quick? I have my TGP pipper on target, TGP screen as SOI. I press TMS UP, the WPN screen shows "Handoff in Progress Station x", but the Maverick doesn't lock. What am I not seeing here?
have a had the exact same thing man im really frustrated cant lock any targets at all it's just give a T and that's it. let me know if you figure it out
Still cannot HANDOFF lock! Do not know what you mean by "Let's command handoff" what botton is that and even I set on auto still doesnt want to lock the target and I am not able to fire. Please if someone can explain.
Hey spud, do you still use the warthog throttle and do you have the deltadim mod for it? Your slewing looks smooth and accurate, what are your axis tunes?
Can you do a video showing the different guidance systems used by the different classes of AGM 65? I noticed the K's seemed impossible (or very difficult) to lock up using AUTO, and wouldn't get a manual lock until I was well within manpad range. Whereas the D's would lock up instantly. The D is laser guided whereas the K is CCD guided, but the K is supposed to have superior range. I'm probably doing something wrong, but I'm wondering if it's a bug or just user error?
Does the contrast of the Maverick seeker have an effect on the Mavericks ability to lock up a target? or is the contrast just to adjust the monitor in the cockpit for my eyes only?
Howdy, small problem I've got right now is the seeker head looking slightly off where the Tpod is aiming, by about 2-300 feet so I cant get the handoff. It has worked on the first shot a few times but when I circle and come in again its usually squinting off slightly and never lines up properly even when slaved, any ideas?
Is there a way to make the tgp stay in front in the hud so you can find it after you’ve attacked a previous target? I keep losing it and find it impossible to find!
Be nice if this procedure actually worked cause it doesn't the handoff doesn't slave the MAV at all. TMS up long doesn't do anything at all on mine. Doing a handoff the mav seeker never moves doesn't matter if i'm inside max range or not. Only thing I can do is use PRE mode to get the seeker somewhat in the area then TMS down on WPN page to slew over the target and manually lock it. EDIT: Apparently starting from the air it works correctly cold start the TGP doesn't even come on half the time.
@@Spudknocker I found it. The startup sequence is crucial to making this work right. From the ground start you have to make sure the TGP is ready to go before swapping over to WPN page. After TGP is ready to go if you bring up the weapon page the MAV should slave to your point if you can slew the TGP and the seeker head tracks it your good. It also seems like you need to do a TSM down twice for cursor zero if you make a go around pass. Some weird nuances on these things right now and I get the feeling once boresighting is implemented it should get rid of all these weird issues. Right now the MAV should not move with the TGP because they have not been boresighted yet. The mav has no idea where the TGP is looking until it is. For now though it's a great thing to have. :)
Even in auto it 90% of time doesnt work. After pressing TMS long a Handoff to station is signalised but maverick is still looking at the waypoint. Please help.
That's with optical at least and trying to just hit a spot on dirt and tried a tank that way and dozens of times and I can't get them to fire so hopefully you will help me with that
I am from Iraq XD i am thinking of getting back to DCS, but it has been a very long time since i have flown any jet in the sim might consider some 1-1 classes with u ^^ great video
I am having the issue of the TPOD is locked to my last target, and I can not slew it even if it is SOI. Its just locked in place, but if i make the seeker head SOI, I can slew the seekerhead just fine. I switch from auto mode, to manual mode and back, but the TPOD is locked in place. Not sure what I am doing wrong, it just seemed very fluent in the video to slew the TPOD, TMS up long press, handoff to the Maverick, fire.
@@mikeck9946 I figured out how to get my TPOD to move, then hand off to the maverick. On the right DDI, where you select the weapon, the button on top; You can cycle between visual mode, bore mode, and pre plan mode. I was in vusual mode and the TPOD did not slew. Changed it to pre-plan mode and I can slew and hand the information off to the maverick. YAY! Hope this helps you. I have not looked into the waypoints yet, like the maverick turning on at a certain waypoint and whatnot, but at least I can zoom in and fire with the TPOD.
no matter what i do, i cannot get a lock on something with this tutorial! the maverick is not even looking where the tgp looks at, altough it should be slaved to the tgp. very frustrating
You do really explain very calm and do good instructions, maybe as a wish from my side, try to hover your mouse or circle your mouse a little when clicking buttons so my brain has time to realize what button you just clicked. So i dont have to rewind the video 10 times ;D.
Your weapon screen is already over the target when you turn the mavericks on, how is this? mine is always aiming at a different spot and fails to hand off.
Make sure the target is under the selected steer point. The TGP will auto-home to steer points as you move through them. (and in the mission editor, make sure you set the steer point altitude to 0feet AGL).
At 1:50 when you press AG mode the square with the dot in it gets fixated on your velocity vector , mine doesent it just static in the middle of the screen , your box is also following the Mavric when you slew it mine doesent, what am i doin wrong im going mental =/ The box is just static in the middle of the hud , never ground stabalisze or following when i slew im in Vis mode.
As a tutorial, for noobs like me, it would be a good idea to show in detail the buttons you selected to turn on this thing or that thing. In the first part of this video, you flew through the button presses with no detail at all. Other than that, good video.
REPEAT AFTER ME, AUTO HANDOFF IS BROKEN, AUTO HANDOFF IS BROKEN, AUTO HANDOFF IS BROKEN. it's not a matter of TMS long, short, extra long or whatever, IT IS BROKEN AND IT NEEDS TO GET FIXED
In Wags video he says TMD Fwd short, and here you say long so which is correct? And in wags video the symbols are on top of eachother, not one next to each other cause pilot can see where they are what are you talking about? its a bug the TGP box is off, its a known bug
@@Spudknocker I did it few min ago with TMS F short, just a click on my hotas. Wags is also using short command to hand off the target from TGP to Mav and then Mav auto locks it, if TGP is set to auto ofc. If its in manual mode you have to select the Mav WPN page as SOI and then lock it up manually. I like your vids man but you are wrong on this one. Even the manual doesn't have anything on TMS F long.
I'm very late to this video so if no one replies, oh well. But a message to Spud, would he by any chance be able to start posting his MIZ files after posting a video, i my self have no clue how to make missions, so to be able to run missions like this would be really fun.
- If you are in CZ (Curser Zero) mode, the TGP will be looking at the currently selected waypoint, change the waypoint will automatically point TGP to the next waypoint. -Press SP (Snowplow)on the TGP page will bring the TGP to 'boresight' mode, from there you can use the HUD to designate the target. - And if your TGP is looking somewhere else after you mask it, that's because TGP will have a hard time to re-locate the point you previously looking at, both POINT TRACK and AREA TRACK are using images as reference. The solution is to enter INR mode before the mask, press TMS down when TGP is SOI, and POINT or AREA will disappear, which means the TGP is using a GPS coordinate as the reference point, so no matter how you maneuver the aircraft, the TGP will always find the reference point back.
Yeah, but the limit is two, one per rack. Lock up the first one, then hit the missile step button and lock up the second; then just hit weapon release twice and they'll both go off to their separately locked targets.
wtf do you mean TMS forward? in the control page, it has TMS up, right, down and left. EDIT: I figured it out for anyone wondering. Explanation and a workaround for a handoff bug in the replies
@@BryanDenham so I found out. Its TMS up short for handoff. Problem is, autohandoff is broken, so you gotta do manual handoff. Its TMS up short, DMS down to switch SOI to the mav, then TMS up short to lock the mav, and finally weapon release. Problem is, sometimes the mavs don't like to lock onto the target you want, or lock up a fence or a patch of sand or someshit
@@ThePizzaGoblin ya ive had problems locking Mavericks too.going all the way back to the A10a.they dont want to lock what is under your cross hair and love to go for a nearby building, i think its just a Maverick quark we have to learn to work with but im hoping it gets better .
On the TPOD there's a SP OSB (snowplow mode) which should be able to reset it, but that option always disappeared short after, not sure if that's a bug.
"Shack" is a term used by real world pilots as specialized interjection. A "shack" isn't simply hitting or destroying a target. It's intended to highlight an exceptionally accurate hit, or a string of direct hits on multiple targets in one pass (typically by bomber pilots dropping unguided bombs). It's just cringe to hear someone use terms incorrectly when they are speaking like they know what they are saying. Especially slang terms. It's like when older people try to be "cool" or "hip" around their teenage kids friends. Thinking about it has me remembering that scene from Inglorious Bastards (at the end) when the Nazi investigator says "ooo, that's a bingo!" lol. I'm not trying to be mean. It just bugs me every time I watch one of these. I grew up an Air Force brat before joining the Army. That probably has something to do with it.
You always spend five minutes on stuff that could be conveyed in one. I can never finish your videos. They're brutal. If you want to spend all day talking watch some Red Kite videos. His details are actually substantive.
Hmm..this is a little disapointing, as I am pro USAF. But what I am seeing here, is the F/A-18C is way more advanced then the F-16 Viper. I will probably go with the A-10C as its USAF. But it looks like DCS doest not have very modern USAF fighters. The reason, is the USAF is really TOP secret stuff. Thats why we don't have an F-22 in DCS ($80 dollar cockpit) Well at least the AH-64D Longbow Apache is coming out. Eagle Dynamics is working on it. The F/A-18 is the best the Navy has got. The USAF has the F-22, which can't be modeled correctly because it is TOP SECRET. I wish the military would get more invoved in DCS. It is serious business.
who knows, maybe ED does have F-22 stuff. I heard one of the devs was trying to get F-22 plans. They definitely can't share it with the normal people, but maybe they are doing something with it for the military only. I know they have a few contracts with the USAF.

@@Steohleo well this is an old topic and solved already: you have to boresight your stations first.
@@Stormrider-Flight What does that mean how do you do that?
I still can't use the TGP with mavericks, this really frustrates me. The Maverick never locks on, the cross hairs never close. I can use the Maverick without the TGP, but nothing goes with using the TGP. It doesn't matter if you use auto or manual. I am using X-56 HOTAS and ever since ED came out with the F-16, they don't work well with it.
First I would like to thank you for this amazing tutorial. I have a question for a state that I sometimes get the TGP into.
Question on the use of the TGP with AUTO mode (AGM 65-D). (Using open BETA 11/16/2020 [Steam release])
I have tested it out a few times and I sometimes get it into a state where I can control it when the HUD is SOI, but when making the TGP SOI I can no longer steer the TGP.
Yes having endless issues with TPOD in general , never-mind handoff To Maverick
silly Question or not ? how do you use Tpod manually not using waypoint or preset destination , so you see target of opportunity while flying to a waypoint and you want to attack that Target ?
@@aletricio76 i was having an issue like this as well , im not 100% sure but i think it has to do with the Tpod being in either CCIP or CCRP i think in CCIP the Tpod is locked and used for ranging information only , you have to change it to CCRP to be able to slew it around .
I would like to see the F-4 Phantom II as a high fidelty cockit ($80 bucks) in vietnam. The technology is crude but would still be an awesome ride. Drop Napalm bombs...that would be a trip.

@@moitoi4064 I've used the P51 before in Nam missions. Not quite the same though.
What am I not seeing here?
have a had the exact same thing man im really frustrated cant lock any targets at all it's just give a T and that's it. let me know if you figure it out
For me it was tms forward where I went wrong. Didn't know if they ment right or up..
I have a super duper secret throttle im not allowed to talk about!
I don't have a super sekrit throttle, so I use 30 deadzone and 30 saturation with no curve. Works well for me :)))
@@Spudknocker That's interesting, does it have a proper analog joystick as slew controller, if so, what axis tunes do you use?
@@Spudknocker Only interested if if has FFB for dynamic detents and friction :)
That is great help. But how can I adjust the slewrate for tgp and maverick?
Can you do a video showing the different guidance systems used by the different classes of AGM 65? I noticed the K's seemed impossible (or very difficult) to lock up using AUTO, and wouldn't get a manual lock until I was well within manpad range. Whereas the D's would lock up instantly. The D is laser guided whereas the K is CCD guided, but the K is supposed to have superior range. I'm probably doing something wrong, but I'm wondering if it's a bug or just user error?
ir Mavericks (D/G) have a 7.5 mile auto lock range while the K and H maverick have a 4.5 lock range and you have to use manual mode
Why when I move my tpod, the maverick camera don't
Does the contrast of the Maverick seeker have an effect on the Mavericks ability to lock up a target? or is the contrast just to adjust the monitor in the cockpit for my eyes only?
Howdy, small problem I've got right now is the seeker head looking slightly off where the Tpod is aiming, by about 2-300 feet so I cant get the handoff. It has worked on the first shot a few times but when I circle and come in again its usually squinting off slightly and never lines up properly even when slaved, any ideas?
my issue is, the mav will say handover in progress and nothing. still says i have track. cant send missile.
ZeroX Zero you need to be in preplanned mode to start off, if your missile seaker gets stuck then try cycling the mode back to pre.
How do you have such fine control over the TPOD mine is so janky, big movements very hard to be precise?
Have they broken something since this vid? My TGP comes "on" but all I see is a black screen.
Even in auto it 90% of time doesnt work. After pressing TMS long a Handoff to station is signalised but maverick is still looking at the waypoint. Please help.
What is a TMS forward long? TMS forward long push? Is that TMS up down?
TMS Forward and hold for more than 1 second!
@@Spudknocker Understood thanks for getting back to me I am looking forward to trying out the AGM65"s with your instructions.
@@Spudknocker it's labeled TMS up right down and left in controls. I'm assuming TMS FWD would be TMS right

i am thinking of getting back to DCS, but it has been a very long time since i have flown any jet in the sim
might consider some 1-1 classes with u ^^
great video
When i do this the symbol at the bottom of my mav screen turns from rdy to rel but doesnt fire
Not sure what I am doing wrong, it just seemed very fluent in the video to slew the TPOD, TMS up long press, handoff to the Maverick, fire.
i have the same issue. Not to mention my waypoints getting screwed up with this thing
So i dont have to rewind the video 10 times ;D.
only way I can figure out how to lock the missile is with the mav seeker head cant get it to lock through auto handoff
@@kareemelhawary7228 thanks, I wasnt bore sighting first. I have it sorted now👍
Why does it matter if the Tpod remains locked into TGT? When it hands off does it not use the Mavs sensor?
It doesn't matter except for the few seconds during the handoff.
I Get the missile to get the T, but it never will go into C to so i can rifle it, what am i doin wrong it, its on PRE and AUTO
I dont know i have the same problem\
how does the one on one training work? Seriously interested.
All i had to do was to restart DCS, what a waste of 3 hours =)
How do I slave my Mavericks to the TGP?
When he said it's really embarrassing for tge us to have issues running around in us equipment.... oh man, that didn't age well.
How do you reset the TGP to boresight?
I actually dont think there is a way to do that right now
Turn Snowplow mode on then off again then select the steer point again, tpod buggy as hell (or not user friendly at least)
In Wags video he says TMD Fwd short, and here you say long so which is correct? And in wags video the symbols are on top of eachother, not one next to each other cause pilot can see where they are what are you talking about? its a bug the TGP box is off, its a known bug
Ivan Cega you need to use TMS forward long to command the handoff
@@Spudknocker I did it few min ago with TMS F short, just a click on my hotas. Wags is also using short command to hand off the target from TGP to Mav and then Mav auto locks it, if TGP is set to auto ofc. If its in manual mode you have to select the Mav WPN page as SOI and then lock it up manually. I like your vids man but you are wrong on this one. Even the manual doesn't have anything on TMS F long.
@@hunter-c3r i just think tpod is broken :P
What is DMS down?
My tgp is constantly slewing/moving, without any inputs.. It works good in the f18, anybody know if it the patch on the open beta or am I just dumb?
I'm very late to this video so if no one replies, oh well. But a message to Spud, would he by any chance be able to start posting his MIZ files after posting a video, i my self have no clue how to make missions, so to be able to run missions like this would be really fun.
What map is that? Thanks
the tgp keeps looking where ever it pleases, is there a way to force reset the tgp to boresight then move it from there?
Where is TMS forward?
I wish the A10 had that Auto-Handoff-Function!
can you have more than one mav locked onto a target then ripple fire them all at the same time?
Yeah, but the limit is two, one per rack.
Lock up the first one, then hit the missile step button and lock up the second; then just hit weapon release twice and they'll both go off to their separately locked targets.
@@Bullet4MyEnemy thx
wtf do you mean TMS forward? in the control page, it has TMS up, right, down and left.
EDIT: I figured it out for anyone wondering. Explanation and a workaround for a handoff bug in the replies
im constantly running into that problem with the different videos with all the different DCS content creators they all say it a bit differently.

His details are actually substantive.
you still not explaining the most important thing how to make maverik use your pod target!!!!!!!!!! that is the poin of the video XDDD

This could have been 5 minutes and been more specific
we came here for the tutorial not the story.......
Get to the effing point....and there are several versions of the mav
