    Mosquitoes, ticks, poison ivy, extreme humidity, allergies, inadequate or broken AC in car, generally too many loud people out and about at all hours, tornadoes, hurricanes, catastrophic floods, increase in crime... So many reasons to hate spring and summer. Winter isn't perfect, but it's a relative paradise for me.

      Bingo! You can always put on more clothes if cold; even if you go naked you still can't get cooled off; you just have to sit and stew in your own juices. Thank God Almighty for air conditioning. And climate change makes it hotter and hotter every year. I want to live in Colorado now. I love Colorado!

    • @nirfz
      @nirfz 3 года назад

      I remember one holiday i went to a warm climate (greece, the island of Rhodes) and after a few days i started hoping for rain. The constant cloudless sky and heat and the (to me) extremely loud cikadas (or whatever creatures made that noise) made it pretty clear to me that i like colder climates. (i felt like being in an hot air oven the whole time) My Pollen allergies strech from spring to summer. But there is one thing i have to give warm climates: in southern climates next to the sea the air helps allergic people.
      Summer even in my climate means bugs moskitos, (even the cicadas are slowly wandering north it seems due to climate change) and rash on my inner elbows from sweating. I am always looking forward to autumn and winter.
      @Shawn Thomas: walking keeps you warm in cold weather. (body movement in general), snow isolates, look at igloos (in military training we dug a snow hole almost like an igloo into a snow slope and slept in there. -30°C and wind outside, 0°C and no wind inside. (when i say no wind i mean the weather phenomenon, as we were 12 guys there were other "winds" ;-) ) Falling on a sharp object? As people tend to wear more layers or thicker clothing, they hurt themselves less when falling on somehthing as the clothing has more cushening effect.
      When people are at home, at least where i live, there is less burglary. Burglars don't want to "meet" the occupants. Makes their hobby more complicated. (Since last years lockdowns that sort of crime almost went away here.)

    I think you forgot one big thing: allergies - especially against pollen and such. Winter can be a BIG relief if you have them. Also it's a great place for introverts who don't want to spend much time outside anyways and comes with perks like not always having to show of your body in daily activities (like on the beach) and also smaller rent because always sunny places are notoriously expensive most of the time.

    Born & raised in WI for 20 years and then moved to San Diego and Hawaii for the next 12 years. I don't miss winter, but we fly in for a month of winter every Christmas with family and then retreat back to our season-less home in January. I've found most ex-winter livers(?) don't miss winter though, they miss fall. It did take me a while to stop judging rental home options based on how difficult the steep driveway would be to traverse when covered in ice and snow while looking for places to live the last 12 years though. Hard habit to break.

    I hate mowing my lawn, sure I have to shovel but I've shoveled 6 times this winter. Summer time I have to mow every damn week. My allergies go away in winter and no bugs. Have you seen the size of the bugs in places where it's warm year round. No thanks.

    • @jhopkins213
      @jhopkins213 3 года назад +1

      You most certainly do not HAVE TO mow or shovel. Hire a service to do both. For $30 per lawn cut or snow removal, I get to watch somebody else do it from the comfort of my air conditioned and/or heated living room. It's well worth the cost.
      I do agree with the bug thing though. Winter does kind of a "reset" on the bug population, and the critters around here in Michigan don't grow to the size or lethality like those in warmer climates.

    • @ordinaryhuman5645
      @ordinaryhuman5645 3 года назад

      You may not actually have to mow that much. I was doing it every 2-3 weeks last year. Nobody died, and all of the local kittens were also fine.
      Snow is trickier, but I'm tempted to only shovel enough next year for the mailman to have a walking path to my mailbox. Once I get rid of my car I won't really need that whole driveway clear 100% of the time (or ever). But it's probably better to do more shoveling because that's premium winter cardio.

    I’ve recently come to like winter because I’ve been living out of a van for several years. At first I was terrified of the cold and the possibility of freezing to death but I quickly realized that it’s way more difficult to stay cool in the summer than it is to stay warm in the winter. The same points that were made about layers and sleeping are basically amplified by living in a vehicle. The best times of year now are highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. Can’t wait for fall.

    Reasons I like winter:
    Stark change of seasons feels "right," somehow. There's almost a spiritual component to it, and it adds variety to the backdrop of your life. Warm weather is great, and I love when summer rolls around here in Chicago, but I would start to take it for granted and maybe even hate it if it was perpetual.
    Walking to work in very cold weather almost forces you into a meditative state. There's something cleansing and mentally focusing about it and it feels so good when you arrive and get back into the warmth, there's something primitive about it, seeking warmth from the cold.
    Extreme cold weather keeps rent low. Chicago is the third most populous city in the country and has an amazing theater scene but costs way less to live in than New York or LA.
    Snuggling up under blankets with a good book is the best.
    Snow is very very pretty.
    No insects. You can take a walk through a nature trail and everything is fucking dead as hell and won't bite you or fly in your ear.

    As far as I've seen and experienced, another reason why winter is less bearable in the States (as well as in Australia) is because too many houses over there have not been built to withstand harsh winters. Whereas here in Estonia You mostly don't need additional heaters. But that might be just my experience.. Feel free to comment.

    In a way, season preferences are a good look into someone's temperament and/or personality. One person's "negatives" are another's "positives." One person's "it's cold" is another's "it's cozy." One person's "it's lonely" is another's "it's peaceful." One person's "it's inconvenient" is another's "it builds character." One person's "I miss all the flowers" is another person's "I don't miss my pollen allergies." I've always felt I was in the minority since I hate summer/hot and sunny weather so I've spent most of my life struggling trying to understand why people like summer, so this video's perspective was interesting. 😅

    As someone born and raised in the Los Angeles area I can say a huge reason to live in an area that gets brutal winters is because it’s so much more affordable to live in those areas. We get nice weather almost all year round but we literally pay for it. Cost of living should definitely be in the list.

    • @evercuriousmichelle
      @evercuriousmichelle 3 года назад +6

      Yes!! I lived in the SF Bay Area and paid 1,300 a month for a very tiny studio with no real kitchen and no heat. It also didn’t have a parking spot. So I spent $200 a month on my BART tickets and TONS of time on public transit. To get to work was an hour one way and that was considered a good commute. If I did decide to get a car, I would have had to pay hundreds a month just to park near my studio. So I was rent poor and time poor. And because public transit doesn’t really go to the beautiful nature places, I couldn’t really enjoy all the stunning scenery. Now I live in the Midwest with a real kitchen that also has a dishwasher, it’s larger and affordable. My commute is 15 minutes. I have so much more free time, I can afford a car and thus can get out in nature more. Long story short, every place has it’s downsides and I would rather that be winter than terrible cost of living.

Overall, though, I love living in Kansas, where we have very distinct transitions between seasons. I believe in times of rest (winter) and times of doing. And a lot of people also enjoy winter because they identify with the weather from the place you're from. There's a reason British people complain about the weather all the time. And I personally identify heavily (and almost have a sense of pride) over the wild winds, fog and rain you always get on the West coastline of Denmark. There is nothing that compares to the peace of a snowy day. When you look out over the landscape with the snow softly falling without a sound, it's so peaceful and serene. It's like the whole world is quiet and still.

    I actually love winter, so much.. summer is just so uncomfortable, the heat and humidity and mosquitos and then it’s too hot and everyone blasts their ac, and you have to wear a sweater for inside and then quick strip when you step outside.

    Quality over Quantity. I like it. Enough about you. About me: My mom grew up in California (no snow) then moved to New Jersey after she married and hated the winter but now she likes it. My wife grew up in Malaysia (no snow) then moved to New Jersey after we got married and she loved it and still loves it. She loves to build stuff in the snow. She helps with shoveling the driveway. She learned to ski and snowboard. I should point out that her personality enjoys trying new foods, visiting new places, and trying new activities. She's adventurous and open to new experiences. New Jersey has brutally hot and humid summers and bitterly cold and slushy winters. I moved us to California because I love "perfect" weather where I can go out biking in shorts and a t-shirt but she missed the family and friends she made in New Jersey, so we moved back. It's not so easy to make all of your friends and family move to California.

    My mom grew up in Ohio, and she HATES winter, but has a very good reason. My grandpa wasn't always reliable in making sure there was heat and proper food in the house, so sometimes they had to go without, even in the winter. My mom recalls a period where the family had no heat and had to bundle up to sleep in the winter, which is almost always still very cold, and she recalls telling herself the mantra "I will never be this cold again" over and over. And to this day, she finds temps below 75F to be almost intolerably cold.

    Everyone in this vid who saying a warm place is the "same all the time" doesn't realize that unless you're literally in the tropics, you still have changes in the seasons, it just gets HOT. In the southern US, you have mild winters, but extreme summers. The change cold places feel between 50º F and 0º F is the same but opposite change warm places feel between 50º F and 100º F. Humidity so high you feel like you can't breathe, and even in drier places like Los Angeles, temperatures get above 100º and it can be dangerous to be outdoors for too long. Not saying these folks who like winter would enjoy this, but don't imagine that "you don't feel time passing" or something. We also wait for the end of summer.

      And even in the tropics you have humid/rainy (like REALLY rainy) and dry season. It's not temperature but it still matters.

      @@altertopias The rainy season only lasts around 2 weeks where I'm from. It's sad, I could use a month of good temperatures.

    I love winter. It was always my favorite season as a kid and I love it just as much as the other seasons now. It’s beautiful, cozy, quiet, and it has this fascinating combination of light and dark. There’s not much daylight, but the snow is bright. The night sky is stunning. Blizzards are gorgeous and mesmerizing. I don’t think it’s a “Stockholm syndrome” thing at all. It’s genuinely enjoyable. I grew up with some wonderful memories of winter. I honestly think that how you grew up has a big impact on what seasons you enjoy and what you don’t. And so does attitude. And of course, as your friend said, we’re all wired differently so there’s that too.
    One of my favorite things about it is walking outside when it’s snowing, breathing in the crisp cold air, and listening to the exquisite silence. There’s truly nothing more peaceful than the silence of winter in my opinion. But maybe living in the woods helps with that. Cause living in a suburban area or a city wouldn’t be quite the same.

    I've lived all over the world, in all sorts of climates. I was born in Canada, and I live here now, but in between I have lived in the south of India (Tamil Nadu) which is hot nearly all the time even in the rainy season, and the UK which is a temperate climate. I would say, out of all of those, I most prefer the weather in Canada. In India it would get so hot, 45+ degrees sometimes, and the bugs were crazy - you would just be living your life, and then a giant flying cockroach, or a pile of giant stinging ants, would come along and ruin your day. The UK weather wasn't extreme, but it was kind of just always rainy, it was rare to feel very warm or very cold, and the lack of sun is just depressing.
    I think there are drawbacks to every climate, at least the ones that I have experienced living in year round, and the one I enjoy most is the one I grew up with here in Canada - probably because I have lived and experience it enough to adapt to it, to know how to deal with the extremes of the climate, and to anticipate the change of the season.
