This is so true. I started my job 3 years ago and wasn't happy with the niche field I was in. I promised myself I'd study to get into a different company/job 3 years ago. I got busy with life, enjoying my first time in my life having disposable income and didn't study. Here I am 3 years later realizing how those small daily commitments could have helped me to change into a dream career. But I failed to do that. Now I can start my next 3 years now...

I’m really trying to take that to heart. I’m a pedantic perfectionist, and that’s been parlayed into a job as an editor. But... it’s not very helpful in my life in more general ways. When it’s too likely that you’ll mess up when you make a move, you have incentive to stay still, and that’s no way to live.
Even in small things like learning to knit, I beat myself up. I’ve only been knitting for three days, and I’m beating myself up for messing up or being messier than I’d like. I’m learning so I can donate blankets and hats and scarves etc to homeless shelters, women’s shelter’s, and the cancer center in my area. I know that if I’m too hard on myself, I’ll just quit, and then I won’t be able to do my part to help. I need to be kinder to myself.
What I think about every day is similar to what your grandad would say, but it was a saying of my mother’s. “If you would be encouraging to a friend with the same problem, why is it then okay to be harsh, if the one having a problem is you? Be half as kind to yourself as you are to others, and things will go much easier for you.” I’m in my head far more than any teacher ever could be, and if I’m always ragging on mistakes and not celebrating little achievements, it’s no wonder I’d want to quit.
We’ve got bad habits of psyching ourselves out of improving.

Quick question: what did your financial situation look like when you took the leap? Did you still work part-time to pay the bills? Did you move back home? Borrow money? Live off of savings? Work full-time somewhere else until the side-gig built up?
Can you make a video where you interview several youtubers or people that "made it" and talk about what it actually looks like on the first few years? I think many like me get blinded by the end of the story and are clueless on what it actually looks like on day 1 of the journey and the sacrifices necessary. Thanks for you amazing comment!

    • @OfficiallySarabi

Matt, you have many rules that have changed your life. You share them with your subscribers in a way that is simple, enjoyable, and educational. I have started to REALLY try and follow some of these rules to try and find productivity in my own life. I just put out my third RUclips video and just scheduled the next 3, I plan to just keep pushing and making videos as a way to educate myself and hopefully others. You have been a huge help with making this change in my life :) Thank you!

@@michaelsmith3533 Thank you very much! I am someone who is by nature pretty anxious and I think the most helpful thing has been taking a step back. I always just try and remember that no single act will make or break my life, the only thing that would is a habit of not trying.

I gave myself 3 years for my paintings to get closer to the inner visions that inspired them. It made me enjoy the creative process and learn so much by not being focused on the results so much. It made me be in the moment, deep within the journey. Turns out after those 3 years I even got the opportunity to have my first exhibition. The word failure doesn't even mean anything thing to me anymore. When you get the right mindset to achieve your goals the word failure becomes an illusion and tends to disappear from your perception of how life works.

I am laughing right now, cause this is what I've accidentally discovered for myself on 1st Jan 2020 and didn't think of extending that principle to other areas of my life! I decided to commit to doing yoga every single day for a whole year, at least 5 minutes a day (which I always exceed). I experimented with yoga in the past, but it was never enough to actually gain all of the benefits it has to offer. And the first day during my very first practice, I felt so calm, as I knew I've got whole year to learn everything. I am two weeks in and I have to say that it feels so good to do yoga. I am more flexible, I found my balance, got stronger and my mind is calm. I am just amazed.
I also started doing 30 day trials few months ago following advice Matt gave us and it's been incledible - I learned to type with all ten fingers, lost weight by tracking my calories and taking it slowly (after years of trying), tried intermittent fasting which works so well for me, started reading although I thought I didn't have time for that and almost learnt a pull up, an impossible task few weeks ago (still working on it). It's changed my life. Thank you so much, Matt!

I set out with these goals and if I go an entire year and don't make 1k subs then I will deem it a failure. About 3 months in and almost 100 videos produced, I had about 100 subs. Lots of failures, but something magical happened as I pushed forward... The rest is covered in this video. Me and my two friends have a small independent production company that is just the beginning of our 3rd full year. We have noticed a huge change in the way our projects used to look, and the way we used to work , up to now. We have been giving our company time to grow, and with each new project we get a better finished product. We love our work, its our passion, and it's something we will probably never stop doing whether we find that huge success or micro success. While so many other people we know in our industry get so frustrated for not being an overnight success, we stay true to our process and the love of the work. It's nice to see other people who feel exactly the same way that we do.
