Finally someone explains what the heck this stuff means. Comprehensive skills can only help so much when there is no explanation to how it's done. Thank you so much.
Same problem i had. I had to mostly figure out how to play by myself because of the severe lack of videos that explain what things are and how to do them
Wave bouncing felt so different from smash 4 and it feels harder. I used to short hop backwards and then b-reverse and it counted both inputs. Never got the idea that you actually put it backwards before the special move.
I remember when Rars and b reverses were braindead easy in Smash 4, now when I recover when facing backwards it feels like a 50/50 if I can b reverse my up B sometimes
What Wolfen Knight said: If you hold the control stick diagonally up towards the direction you want to do the special you can reverse and face back to recover. As simple as that, you don't need to do any gimmicky stuff.
Also for anyone having a hard time with wave-bouncing, my word of wisdom is to test the timing for when you can turn your special around with the direction input before the special move. The special input can be decently delayed. Once you figure out that timing, then add the b-reverse part. Then with that mentality down, do it with short hops. Don't know if I am helping anyone trying to use the c-stick method, but c-stick is annoying with joycons, so I hope I am helping.
2:40 actually, that's seperate. you can still B-reverse normally with falcon and ganon, but in addition, you can turn their neutral B around during the animation.
Since Smash 4, my favorite use has been Roy's dash away, b-reverse neutral b, slide back towards opponent. The combination of the massive hitbox and momentum change can catch people sleeping if they're too aggressive.
Ryuzaki Lawliet - You press shield and let go of the button within 6 frames. Then to turn it into a combo you have to do something immediately out of it, like up smash or force palm grab
Ryuzaki Lawliet - Nope, if you let go of shield within 6 frames the shield animation doesn’t happen, that’s why you’re able to cancel and combo so quickly. If you do it wrong and hold the button a bit too long you’ll see the shield pop up for a second, and the combo won’t be true
Ridley mains gotta practice b-reverse and wavebouncing neutral b like crazy, then they gotta practice b-reverse and wavebounce skewer to end them riggtly
As a lucas main, Zair is one special special move. Like stupid combos you can only do offline. Also dtilt to fsmash. Not true but works one-two times if you have never fought them before
Seeing Lucario doing the wave bounce just reminded me of how fun he was with smash4’s custom moves... Lots of missed potential with that idea. Loved his dash version of force palm, and the quicker and shorter extreme speed was such a good kill option!! It was like pikachu’s quick attack but with a hit box like fox and falco’s up b. Lots of custom moves were super janky but they were fun for a while. Would love to see a mod one day where they are made in a way that suits each character. Example: Link having the double hook shot as up b(or roc’s feather/cape) and spin attack as neutral(mash for some height gain). Side b, Pegasus boots to charge into a slash/jump attack. Then down b could be the megaton hammer. Mimic DK’s down b but with only one hit. Done ranting about missed potential on something that essential even mentioned in this video 😁🤣🤣🤣
I already knew about b reverse and wave bouncing, I often use b reverse as Mario but not wavebouncing. I’ve done it before un training but not in a real match. May be a good time to start practicing wavebouncing and get more comfortable with the button inputs
In project M, with falcon you can B reverse AND reverse falcon punch with the same input but by varying the timing. I assumed it worked the same in the other games. So you can do a wavebounce reverse falcon punch, and it is very satisfying!
To anyone having trouble inputing wave bounces, it’s worth considering changing your C-Stick to Special moves (I am aware of how stupid this sounds). I main Ness and changing my c-stick to specials has helped my greatly in mixing up my gameplay. Inputing wave bounces and momentum retaining double jump cancels is stupid easy with a “B-stick” control setup. It opens the door to so many ness combos and movement options with PSI Magnet and PK Fire.
3:00 Ganon and Captain Falcon can B Reverse in the same way as any other Character can. To use this, you have to do it as fast as you can. Because of this they are able to do a 360 Falcon or Warlock Punch.
I wasnt able to do it like this guide says but i found an easier way i think. Left button is special, right trigger is jump and c stick is light attack. For backwards wavebounce Run away from opponent, jump, hold stick away and you add, LB+c stick(toward opponent) For normal wavebounce Jump towards opponent, LB+lft stick back+c stick forward Low wavebounce Run forward and hold stick, RT, C stick backwards, LB Low wavebounce is the only difficult one, the other two are extremely easy and for b reverse you can do LB+C stick, you dont even need to worry about the timing.
Had to mess around at 1/4 speed some and look up a wiki to explain turn-around specials to get it, but I can pretty reliably do them now! This will make some nasty plays with Robin.
Fun fact: you CAN b-reverse warlock punch and falcon punch, but the timing is dummy tight. Obviously I'm not talking about the reverse animation "b reverse". I've only pulled it off like twice in matches, essentially you can reverse it twice. It's more or less frame perfect, so its not very reliable, but interesting nonetheless.
video starts at 4:00 i hate how most smash videos is 90% filler like i get it cus utube $$$ but jeez is it hard to find some miniscule info without filtering through all the crap
Same! It only worked when I executed it right after a jump from the ground basically canceling my back air with special. But I haven’t been able to see it after a high jump or when I’m already in the air. The funny thing is that I could easily execute it on training mode at a faster or lower speed but never at the normal speed. So the one I learned to do instead was to use the left stick for turn around special and immediately C-stick as a direction for a B-reverse.
I never even known about this except i known b-rev mario up-b roy and chrom neu-b and cap.falcon and ganon neu-b and this seems to be really useful information
I remember not to long ago, a friend of mine asked me how to b-reverse. And I was trying to explain it to him, but he never understood me. So this video helped me a lot, and I hope it will help him as well... THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
You're wrong about b-reversal only being implemented in brawl first. Melee had it, too. Wasn't as prolific as it is now. Was useful, doable, and noticable on a character like samus
I don't mean to nitpick, but Yoshi can also change direction when double jumping due to his unique flutter jump. Iirc he's the only character with a double jump that can do this
Can someone explain the neutral special wave bounce? I can get it consistently at 2/3 speed and about 60% of the time at 1.5. But at normal speed it always ends up as a turnaround special.
if we took the amount of brain power we use to learn reversal b's and wavebounces, and put it towards learning to invest in stocks, we'd all be millionaires lol.
Some characters have notch b reverses like DK and mario. If you angle.it they will b reverse automatically. Not sure on any others. But they have very easy b reverses if you just throw ur stick in the notch.
Why B-reverse makes you drift away when you were launched facing opposite direction? It's supposed to make you turn around and change your drifting into the stage rather that just make you turn around and keep drifting away.
I can see some fellow casuals are discussing what actually qualifies as a "Turnaround Special"..: 1) When facing/jumping away from your opponent, Side-B can automatically be turned around if you simply hold back towards them during the basic side input. This has the same effect of a "turnaround special" without actually needing to do any tech. 2) Likewise, when facing/jumping away from your opponent, Up-B and Down B can be automatically turned around if you simply hold back slightly towards them during the basic inputs. So, if you are on the left of the stage (i.e. jumping left, but wanting to turn and do the move to the right) these left stick directions will be 1-o-clock for Up-B and 5-o-clock for Down-B. This is why you can recover to the stage while facing away from it, as you simply just hold the left-stick up and back towards the ledge (i.e. again, no actual tech is required). 3) Neutral-B turnarounds are more difficult, as holding a direction obviously makes you do a Side-B instead. As a result, you have to tap the direction just before the B press, which is quite a tight timing window. Or you can just play as Byleth, lol. 4) The more complicated "B reverse" (quite easy) and "wavebouncing" (not easy) tech in this video is mostly about mixing up movement and performing surprise special attacks, so it's usefulness depends on the specific character and the nature of their Neutral B.
I mean I play Lucina not much situations where I necessarily need to b reverse. Also standing b reverse is harder for me than doing it in the air for some reason

I’m using the JoyCons because why not and I find the wavebounce very, very tricky to do. B-reversal has been second nature since I main Lucario.
I can see some fellow casuals are discussing what actually qualifies as a "Turnaround Special"..:
1) When facing/jumping away from your opponent, Side-B can automatically be turned around if you simply hold back towards them during the basic side input.
