Retaining length and protecting the hair by leaving it alone after cleansing and moisturizing and sealing it is key.

My hair is at waist length but it shrinks to a little above my shoulders no matter what I do to stretch it. The longer it is the more it shrinks. I just want to wear my hair long 🥲
Ugh I def know the struggle 😭 I feel like in order for us to have hang time in it's most curly shrunken state, it would have to be like thigh or knee length when stretched. Especially on type 4 hair cause the shrinkage is really extreme.
I've noticed that most type 4 people who have thigh length to knee length hair don't do wash and go's at all. Rather they do braid outs or twist outs. Why is this so? Most people prefer to air dry their wash and go's and then band it in order to stretch it after it's dried. I've seen only one person who did it differently. She puts her wet hair in a loose bun and lets her hair dry in that state before taking it down. Her hair was well elongated and long. Although she's thigh length, her curly hair is at waist length. Her hair type is 3c/4a. I've been wondering won't this method work for type 4 hair? I'd love to see someone try it. She called herself Earthly Ram but now goes by La8er Ivy.
@@gloriaaguh5885 they really don’t b/c the tangles would be insane ! & oh that sounds interesting. I’d def be down to try it once I reach thigh length 😂
Omg sameee my hair looks shoulder length to everyone but it’s past my waist
That’s where u gotta do twist outs on blow dried hair
I grew my hair to waist length once but my ends were bad because I didn't trim it for like 2 years 😬😂 . I cut it to a shoulder length bob to grow it out in a completely healthy way. Now I'm back to bra strap length and working my way to waist. I'm a lazy natural, not a product junkie at all, and it takes the stress out of it. One day it will just be long all of a sudden lol
Oh I love if you did it 1x you can do it again 👏🏾☺ you go sis ! & yes trims are still important through the process. I just try to better manage it w/ 1x per year than I did in the previous years w/ 6-12x per year ( 4-6 weeks) ...cause that was way too much
Why trim ends? If it’s protected and you drink a lot of water and take vitamins you shouldn’t be trimming your ends
@@erejo3274 Protective styles, water & vitamins don't prevent you from getting split ends. You only really need to trim your ends if you have splits or if it's thinning towards the bottom ( personal preference ) but if you don't have those issues then you're fine.
@@erejo3274 with natural hair, splits and single strand knots are inevitable no matter what you do. Although, the degree maybe different from person to person. Personally, I wear my hair in a lot of different styles because I like to enjoy my hair rather than keeping it hidden for 364 days out of the year so trims are necessary for me 2/3x a year.
I was trimming my hair way too often and wondering why it was looking short, so glad I’m no longer listening to what I ‘should’ be doing and doing what works for me! Your hair looks lovely😍
Girl yes ! The math was not mathing 🧮 & thank you sm ! :)

I agree with you on the trimming that you don't need to trim so often. You trim often to maintain your length. If you are growing your hair you trim less often. Thanks for sharing
Yes, exactly ! Thank you ! You worded it perfectly ! Well said & thanks for watching :)
Yea once you get your ends healthy, you actually don’t have to trim every 4-6 weeks. It’s trim as needed at that point! I love your hair btw, I’m restarting my hair growth journey now!

This came right on time because my hair been at bra strap length for a minute. I have just started back taking care of my hair tho, so that could be the reason as well. I think I should see more results in a few months if I stay consistent.

Hello, I love your video! Speaking of hairdressers, and the fact that you lost 2 inches in a week. I experience the same thing! Although, I think I lost a lil more hair, so count your blessings, and I took my hair down in just 3 days. 🙄
I had got a sew-in and maybe the 1st red flag should have been when I came into the salon all of her regulars had chin length hair, but I sat in that chair and allowed her to rip through my hair and I felt like an idiot afterwards, and she braided it so tight my head throbbed all day & night, and I just didn't wanna take it down because I had paid so much money, but my dad literally gave me the best advice ever on the third day. He said, "you have already paid the money for this style, and so that's gone, but what else are you willing to pay?" and he was suggesting that if I continued with the style for the sake of "Getting my money's worth" that I may come to pay for the style with permanent hair lost/damage.
Your hair is glorious! So beautiful
Aw thank you so mcuh ! 🧡🥰

Yes pleasssseeee my braid outs have not been hitting as they should😫
Girl I got you 😉🫱🏾🫲🏼
Hi. Newbie here. You have beautiful hair. I've been at the same length for so long. 😢 I love wetting my hair weekly. It's therapeutic for me, but I'm thinking I'm washing it too much. I don't think i can go a month, tho. I'll start slow with two weeks. Can't wait to see your updates. Take care.
Hi Newbie 👋🏾🥰 welcome to the club! Glad you could make it.
Yes, start with bi-weekly & see how that works for you. Tbh if you don't want to/ feel like you can't make 1 month, don't feel pressured to do so. Do w.e works best for you. I only do a month b/c for that entire month my hair is put away in twist/braids.
But if my hair was out most of the time like in a wash-n-go state, I would prob wash every 2 weeks too ( it's more prone to product build-up if your styling it daily). I would prob feel like my scalp is too dirty or that my hair would become unmanageable after 2+ weeks of it just being out. Especially for an entire month before re-washing.
Thanks GIRL💚💚❤❤💚💚
You’re most welcome GIRL ! 🩷🩷🩵🩵🩷🩷
i really feel the trimming too much thing. before my last protective style I trimmed like 3/4 inches from my ends cause i was at that recommended 2-3 months mark. completely unnecessary lol so now ima try no trims for a year/protective style cycling too! I hope I retain as much length as you 🎉
Girl yes I swear it's a SCAM! I'm srry you had to experience that too. Yes try long term protective styling for 3 months at a time if you can it will CHANGE your life! Length retention is CRAZY!
Be careful with the take down process too by putting conditioner in your hair BEFORE washing with shampoo & let it sit for like 30min.-1hr. It's crucial. Less breakage / shed hair from being so dry for so long in braids / twists.
Trimming is still important tho ☝🏾so I recommend 1x trim per year. & I can't tell you how much to cut off, but as for me & my house lol we will cut no more than an inch 😭 ( but that's just me being extreme )
Would love to see a video of your wigs with bangs!

Braid Out Tutorial on the way ! 🫡😇
Started my journey at armpit length in 13' and have been stuck at BSL for yrss. For a long time, I didn't know why cause I'm a no-heat, diehard finger-detangler, trim every 6mnths and use minimal products.
You made me figure it out! I always do minitwists for 2 wks, wash and repeat. But it's a low maintenance style, not a protective one??? 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ Oh ma gad😫
Never had braids or cornows AT ALL so this whole time i never done a protective style.Shoot. New sub 😂
* Pop Smoke Voice * Baby welcome to the party ! 🥳🥂 haha glad you could make it & stick around!
So tbh I would consider mini twist a protective style! Given the info you gave me from this comment, I would say you're on the right track, just try to extend the amount of time you keep the twists in. I wear my twist w/o added hair for at least 1 month but w/ added hair for 3 months ( & wash my hair in those twists every month ) ☺️ You got this sis!
@@amytarie. Happy to be here~
I thought they were LM because the ends aren't exactly, "tucked away", you know? I keep them in for 2wks because I normally wash my hair weekly and the last time I washed twists, I nearly ended up with locs😂But I'll give it a shot with the braids. I am READY to break this plateau!
@@jazz-axy9924 oh yeah if they lock up forget that , try it with braids. Everybody’s routine will be slightly different so no worries !
You def will break this plateau ! 💪🏾 I believe in you!
I wear mini braids i always take them out after a month ...but ive been wondering if i just refresh like around the visible areas i would probky retain way more length
Yes absolutely! Give it a try :) that’s how I retain the most length
Please can u show me how to take down a 3 month old protective style .. after following allthis steps
Omg yes girl I got you! 😍 idk why I never thought of that lol
I have to work on moisture management and if I’m honest I need to cut my hair to neck length to rid the split-ends.
You don't have to do that if you don't want to. You can slowly cut every month or few months to get rid of them. ( But ig that also depends on where your hair already is )
Would you mind how you keep your hair moisturized in long term protective style?
Yes ! That's a great Q. I suggest oiling your scalp and twists after wash day but can make a vid. going in-depth
WE NEED A UPDATED WASH ROUTINE!!! LUV U!!!
Okay I’ll get right on that ! 🫡 love you 🫶🏾
OMG LOVE U BROO OMG🥰🥰🥰😍😍😍😍@@amytarie.
Your length was mine before i damaged it by bleaching in currently trying to get it back
Oh wow ! Why was I just thinking to dye my hair too cause I’m bored with it 😭 mmk maybe not ?
do you have any suggestions for hair growth for someone who has been wearing box/knotless braids for the last 2+ years but has seen minimal hair growth but wants to grow their hair?
Yes! So your hair is growing but somewhere in your routine of things you are not retaining as much length as possible to see those results. All the braids do is keep your hands out of your hair for a while but when they are not in braids what are you doing it to? That matters too. If you can curate a routine for yourself that doesn’t allow you to manipulate your hair as often as possible, you’ll be solid.
I’ll make a vid. of my 3 month breakdown while wearing twists to show you guys :)
You are too cute 💕 thanks for sharing
Tehe 🤭 thank you ! & Thanks for watching !
Any tips for this when also anemic? I am losing much hair.
Hey bae, so srry to hear this :( God bless you.
Ask your doctor if you can take iron pills and biotin if you already haven't. I would make sure my health is a priority 1st so that the physical can follow naturally next.
Then I would go back through the vid. & do a checklist of your hair care routine to see if you notice anything you may or may not be doing that is contributing to additional hair loss. ( using a comb instead of finger detangling, improper takedown of protective styles, not wearing protective styles long enough, changing hairstyles too often, trimming too often, not moisturizing properly etc. )
Hope that helps ❤🩹
I’ve been at bra strap length for like five years now I’m so irritated 😠 but I do think I trim too much and I stopped protective styling as much I have my braids in for two months now and I’ve grown an inch so my hair grows half an inch like yours so I’m gonna take your tips and hope for the best 😅❤
Trust, I def understand your frustration 🥺 but at least you figured out where you went wrong & are correcting it now!
0.5 inch of growth per month is v normal so we can be twins haha 😇 yes pls put the tips into action & report back in 6months. I just KNOW you’ll see results! You got this!😁🫶🏾

@@Appleboo222 ofc my love! 🤗Thank you sm for the support on this channel !
0.5 a month is fast not normal. .25 is notmal....
@@ericablanton9006 Actually 0.5 is normal. Google it. If you are not seeing 0.5 per month by keeping score, leaving your hair alone, and retaining as much length as possible then you probably will see 0.25 or less.
So if I understand correctly, one of the ways to grow it is with long term protective styles like passion twists? Asking so I can start teaching myself 😊
Yes! You got it! ☺️
Beautiful content, but how do you add music without being copyrighted?
I have an Epidemic Sound account :)
I want to wear my natural hair long; the shrinkage is extreme! It's mbl straightened but its above my shoulders after washing😢
Ugh ik the struggle 🙄 that's exactly how mines looks too haha. I just straightened it and was like girl where were you on wash day?! haha
But I feel like in order to see your curly hair long in a natural state it has to be like hip, thigh, or knee length when pulled straight 😩 ( especially if your curls are small / kinkier like mine )
its giving
It is ! ☺ Thanks

Really helpful video! What deep conditioner do you recommend?
So glad I could be of service to you ! :) I use / rec "Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Hair Masque" ( Deep Conditioner) I also have most if not all my hair products linked on my Amazon storefront in the description box. Hope that helps! 🩷
I worry when I leave a protective style… twistouts my hair still becomes matted causing the hair to break when detangling. I can imagine how much I would lose after 1 month
So when I take my twists down after a long time I always make sure to pre-poo 1st so that I don't lose more hair than necessary because my hair gets tangled too.
I usually pre-poo for 1hr then finger detangle outside the shower or sometimes in. All the moisture from the conditioner & water will help loosen up the dirt, product build-up etc. so that it's easier to detangle.
I also have an updated wash day routine if you need a visual :) hope that helps & answers your Q !
I have been Bra strap to collar bone length my whole life
Trust me I know the frustration 😔 I was there for a GOOD MIN. but you can break free if you leave your hair alone for months at a time. Try out my suggestions & see how it works for you. You can do it! ☺️🙌🏾
I'm glad you said what you said about trimming. The trimming in the natural hair community has gotten wild.
Right ?! I was like .. no mam. I had to put 2 & 2 together cause the math wasn’t math 🧮
VERY informative! This helped alot #tailbonelengthgoal
Yay, I'm so glad you found this helpful ☺
How do I keep my hair from turning into an Afro tho? It’s collar bone length
You can stretch it out by doing braid outs or twist outs . That’s what I do :)
👍🏾
Thanks for watching :)
I didnt do any of those mistakes tho and ive been at the same length since last year😭
But yeah for the protective hairstyle recycling I like to wash, moisturize then tie rubber bands at my roots. Usually ppl think i git my hair rebraided/retwisted
If you haven’t made any of the mistakes I made , then just would re-access your hair care routine to see what you may be potentially doing that’s causing you not to retain as much length as you could be.
It’s small things like - do you use a comb? How often do you detangle ? How often do you restyle your hair ? etc. it’s all in the details.
My main methodology is - the less I touch it the longer it gets.
@@amytarie. then I'd have to guess the products I use cause I only wash/style my hair once every 2 weeks and I always finger detangle before combing
@@ShaiLai Tbh I highly doubt it's the products. It gotta be something you're doing or not doing.
Try not using a comb anymore & only your fingers & see if that helps. Also, keep your braids in at least 1 whole month instead of 2 weeks. When it's time to take the braids out, pre-poo w/ conditioner 1st for a least 30min.-1hr. ( really 1hr at best) to get your hair softer & ready for shampoo which is v drying. If you go straight into shampoo after taking the braids out you might experience more hair loss / shed.
Make sure to track your growth monthly! How many inches are you rn?
@@amytarie. I'll try those tips thanks. Currently I'm at bellybutton length
@@ShaiLai oh girl you’re good! I’m thinking you were stuck at BSL or sum. We running the same race 😂 🏃🏽♀️ 🏁

Right ?! She's goated 🐐 💕
Hii! Quick question❤
So I usually have my braids is for 2-3 months, I’m am 11 and my mom doesn’t like to have us get out braids done (it’s $$$). Why didn’t my hair grow 1-2 inches every time I have my hair in? It’s only like half an inch but I rlly want long hair :(
Hi love 👋🏾☺️ so it depends on how much your hair grows within a month. If your hair only grows 1/2 in. per month that’s okay. Mine does too!
I would say keep track of your progress in the notes app on your phone 📱 or in a notebook ✏️ 📓 that way no matter how much it grows within that month or couple months, you’ll be certain it’s progressing by keeping score.
If you are tracking your progress but notice the numbers are staying the same, or even decreasing, you should revaluate your hair are routine & what you are possibly doing to lose hair.
& be patient, you will def reach your goals, don’t worry :)
@@amytarie. I am subbing ur so sweet 🥹
Are you moisturizing your hair in between washing monthly? If so, what's your routine and products? I want to move to washing once a month too but my hair dries out quick.
I don't, only b/c I wear my hair in braids or twists 90% of the year 😬 so when I do moisturize, it's usually on wash day that 1x per month after shampoo & deep conditioning. I usually use whatever is thick like shea moisture, or Camille rose or lotta body creams etc. ( Not really loyal to one brand tho ) and use Castor Oil, and Amala Oil.
If I did not wear my hair in a protective style 24/7 then I'm sure I would re-moisturize my hair every week if it even lasts that long depending on what "style" I have it in ( braids outs , wash n go's ect. )
Hope that helps :)
@amytarie. It does, thank you. I wear my hair in twists 90% of the time but without added hair but it's dry 3 days after washing 🤦🏾♀️
@@tfife ohh 😯 hmm, what porosity are you?
I think it's high, but my hair isn't colored or damaged so who knows 🤦🏾♀️
@@tfife Okay take a porosity test just in case. Super easy & quick at home with a glass of water. If you are high por. try to use heavier / thicker products & oils to seal ( what I've already suggested ) & see if that helps.
I have low por. so my hair already holds onto w.e moisture it gets, for a long time ( ex. my hair can take 2 days to air dry if not assisted ) so on top of applying heavier products myself it stays moisturized for a good min.
So yeah, assess your products and review recommended products for high por. if that's your hair type.
Not I’m bout to delete it lmfao challenge accepted
Pls I'm so embarrassed 😭 !!!
I'm trying to get to bra strap length 😢 I got 6 inches on my head

@@alweston01 ?
@@Nikky10000 ; I was saying that my hair is also short.
what is your opinion on oiling hair every night?
Personally , I wouldn't. I believe it would clog your pores? I think oiling your hair / scalp 1x max 2x per week is more than enough. Your head also already produces it's own sebum ( oil ) so you don't have to do too much :) Hope that helps
Tysm :)
Your hair is beautiful. What’s your hair type ?
Thank you!🩵 I believe it’s 4a
So every night do you braid and loose out in the morning?
If my hair is not currently in a protective style ( twists or braids ) then yes, I do re-braid my hair for a braid out every night and loose out in the a.m. However, it's not a prob for me b/c not only do I only do 4 braids max. but I usually only do braid outs for 3-7 days until I install the nxt protec. style.

I don't know who can help me. My hair is at waist length when blowed out, but when curly it _grazes_ my shoulders. Now I know, you guys are going to tell me stretch out my hair. The thing is, i have 3b curls(that are really defined naturally) on majority of my head(my edges section is 3c and right on top it's 3a-3b). So when i stretch it out, one part of my hair looks super straight and then another part will be really really curly. So i cant stretch it out cause it looks really funny. And no matter what i do, my hair wont go past my shoulders(and i don't diffuse or scrunch my hair)despite me seeing the growth if i straighten my hair. My hair does get bigger the more it grows though, but i want length

@@amytarie. Hi Amy, yes that's what I want to do

Can I relax my hair and still keep it healthy
Tbh, idk I’ve never relaxed my hair. My opinion though .. relaxing your hair involves chemically processing it, which to me anything that permanently altars your natural hair state is damaging. So I would say no … but I’m sure someone else would say yes.

Don't go back to her let people stay out of your hair.
Haha yes I just learn to do it myself now
Trim every 3 -4 months
If that works for you , go ahead :)
@amytarie. My eldest child is 37 years, and I have been for years... Thanks, I didn't need your approval ...
@@YOUR-WORD-IS-YOUR-BOND You don't need my approval. You also don't need to comment your opinion. If your opinion doesn't agree w/ mine that's okay, which is why I said "if that works for you". You are the one who seemingly took offense.
The goal isn't long hair. The goal is healthy hair. Long hair isn't for everyone. You have to have the right face shape and bone structure.
That depends on who you ask. If you ask ME... MY goal is LONG healthy hair. Anyone can have long hair. It's not exclusive to certain people, face shapes or bone structures.
Why click on the video then
@@amytarie.everyone can’t have long hair tho
@@Calilife2007 any person who is relatively healthy can. Those w/ alopecia may be excluded.
@@amytarie. this really isn’t true or at least it’s way harder for some people to achieve so
i think people want to know about 4C hair. Not biracial hair like yours
I'm sorry you seem to feel upset by the info given. To my current knowledge, I am 100% black. Also, my hair is in a stretched-out state here, not in its natural type 4 curl pattern / shrunken state.
Where on this video did you see biracial hair. This stretched type 4 hair
@@queenawill3542 Thank you! 😭
