The issue I was having was no digital display readings on either displays and no gauges working. Turned out to be several solder joints were broken. No kit required. Once I removed the needles and examined that side of the board it was obvious where the problem was. In fact if you look at the instrument cluster in this video when he has the circuit board exposed (the front side under the needles) you will notice two locations that have been discolored due to overheating. One at around 10:00 and one around 2:00 position. It was these areas that I had to resolder multiple joints. Although I did purchase a kit thinking it was the stepper motors for $30. I did use the kit to upgrade my lights so I am happy I did buy it. So if you are experiencing similar problems you might just need to resolder some joints. 2004 Chevy Silverado.
Thank you for this comment! This was exactly what was wrong with mine. You could barely tell where the solder was broken. Anyway I soldered it up and it works great!

I just finished replacing all of my stepper motors. A word of caution. Do not attempt this if you are not experienced at soldering and own a nice soldering iron. I have done a lot of soldering in my life and used a $400 weller soldering iron. When I was finished all of the gauges were fixed except the speedometer. Turns out I over heated one of the pins a little to much which ruined the trace on the board. I ended up taking a single conductor from a piece of cat5 and making a jumper wire to the next point where that trace went to and now it all works. My point is that if I had used the standard $20 soldering iron from the hardware store, I am positive that I would have ruined all of the traces. If your iron can’t melt the solder in a second or 2 and you have to hold it there, the glue that they use to seal the back of the board will begin to melt and ruin your solder joints. Not a solution for an amateur. Then again, if your other option is the dealer and a new cluster all together, then I guess it’s worth trying. If you ruin it, you can still always have them put in a new one. If you can afford to be without the cluster and do without the vehicle for a few days, I think the best option is to send it off for repair.
Our Suburban had problems with the dash for a long time. All the gages (except the RPM meter and the temp. gage) stopped working, and some of the settings on the AC and heating didn't work. Finally got those fixed a couple years ago. Interesting video.

This left me with so many questions, what if none of the gauges work (just twitch) how can you mark the correct position with the key on? And no mention of where to get the stepper motors or model numbers.
You talked about the problem where all of the gauges go wacky at the same time and you fixed this by changing all of the steppers? Could be but that doesn't make much sense. They would they all go bad like on the same day? Is the fact that one or two is bad is making all of them not work? The every gauge dead problem sounds more like a wiring or connection issue or something on the panel circuitry. This repair is likely to fix my gauges that all died on the same day?
You explained (sort of) how to replace the stepper motors, but did not describe how to resolder the SMDs that cause the PRNDL display to fade out, or how to remedy the issue with the cluster failing to go to sleep.

Any idea how to address a dead cluster? Warning/signal lights work, but all needles are dead. All new stepper motors. I’ve replaced successfully the motors on three clusters, but I have two clusters that are still giving me issues. I think it may be some surface mount components but I am not sure where to start. Also it is indeed the cluster because another good cluster does work in the vehicle, and the bad cluster does not work in the vehicle the good cluster came from.

For the trip toggle, on the 2005 suburban circuit board there is a white circular piece inside a black piece. Is there another piece? How do they sit on the board? Scrolling no longer occurs when the toggle is pressed
Using a professional desoldering gun is the proper process. Putting tape at the end of the needles is no way accurate. The black colored stepper motors your are seen installing do not hold up and will eventually fail only leading to another repair in the future. 2003 to 2006 models have up to 5 issues: (1)Gauges fail 1 by 1 because of defective stepper motors. (2) Dim or dead VFD displays which are the PRNDL and DIC(driver info center). (3) Back lighting at night dim or dead behind the gauges, not the VFD's or digital displays.(4) Intermittent power issue where the gauge cluster and the entire panel will eventually fail leaving only your back lighting bulbs, blinker bulbs and "Check Engine" MIL lit up. (5) Solder joints and bad parts on the circuit board. There can also be software updates and need to be updated on the circuit board. If you're going to ship your cluster off and want it rebuilt properly with a guarantee, it should be done right once and once only without the inconvenience of inferior experience and inferior parts with no guarantee.

No low fluid level warning ect. I have had 3 break downs now because i had coolant leak but no warning i was low. Im worried about what else the car is not warning me about. The only light that does work? and never shuts off is the change oil light.
Hi if I replaced the instrument cluster and the mph keeps idling up and down as I'm driving. Could it be the connector terminal that connects to the back of the instrument cluster that needs to be replaced? I had a mechanic that said just drive it like that.but I'm not comfortable driving without my speedometer working properly
So will this fix a U1000 code in the CAN Network when the cluster doesn't communicate? It says "electronic issues"? Maybe "How to replace the stepper motors" would've been the correct title for this video.
If you have cluster problems it's not worth trying to repair it yourself. Try AutoXpressTech. They have a $89 Complete Rebuild for Chevy GMC Clusters . That includes all stepper motors, backlighting and fixes most common problems. I also includes return shipping.
Dan, does that mean if I pull my instrument cluster and ship it to AutoXpressTech they will perform the rebuild and ship it back to me ready to drop back into my dash?
Not sure if this is what I'm dealing with, the speedometer is not working n the break light is on, then all of a sudden it starts working brake light goes off, then after a few minutes, stop working again n brake light comes back

If you're going to ship your cluster off and want it rebuilt properly with a guarantee, it should be done right once and once only without the inconvenience of inferior experience and inferior parts with no guarantee.
GM Gauge Repair Hi, I am experiencing probelm #4 you described to a T. It appears all my lights and stepper motors have already been replaced once in the past. What is the fix for this one? And no, I can't send it in to you. I'm very capable of doing my own electrical repairs, I just need some help troubleshooting it.
Mine won’t fully turn off and it’s draining my battery. Any fix or suggestions for that? Low illumination where information display is.
I sent my cluster away for repair and when I put it back in there was no function or electrical going to it? Are there fuses in line or what should I do?
Have a cluster problem maybe it's a 04 gmc sierra drove 30 mile and miles didn't go up need help figuring out what to do
Any advice on a 2003 gmc envoy..the speedometer won't light up there are other lights for symbols but the speedometer and other dials won't show at night
where can i find these replacement parts?
Will this cause the truck to loose power also while on the highway?
Mine does this as well😞
Why could none of my warning lights work on my 2006 torrent. All lights come on when i start the car, Speedometer and engine temp gauge fine. I get no warning if there is an issue with my car.
Will a bad guage cluster cause the radio to come on and off?
If you have cluster problems it's not worth trying to repair it yourself. Try AutoXpressTech. They have a $89 Complete Rebuild for Chevy GMC Clusters . That includes all stepper motors, backlighting and fixes most common problems. I also includes return shipping.
Dan, does that mean if I pull my instrument cluster and ship it to AutoXpressTech they will perform the rebuild and ship it back to me ready to drop back into my dash?
@@karlackdamack4238 yes
On average how long will it take to get the cluster back.
Where are y'all located
Wouldn’t it be easier to just go to pick and pull and get a whole new cluster? Or does it not work like that.
Not sure if this is what I'm dealing with, the speedometer is not working n the break light is on, then all of a sudden it starts working brake light goes off, then after a few minutes, stop working again n brake light comes back
Unfortunately I have a much worse problem. My gauges are going crazy and I do not have any reverse or signal lights. Starting to wonder if my vehicle was struck by lightning. 🤦♂️
Mine is doing this except my turn signal still works.
@@davebankson5342 Check your ground wires under the driver's door. There's also a ground at the back of the block to check. Sounds like a bad ground somewhere.
My 04 chevy silverado 1500 none of the gauges work, any idea on how to fixed???
My right turn signal light on the dashboard doesn’t show, how do I fix that???
Could this possibly fix my shifting problem my truck has?
Where do we pick up the part for the replacement
Can a bad cluster cause erratic transmission shifting and or no communication with obd2 port?
Full Circle I don’t think so, what are you driving
I just got a new engine in my monte carlo. Instrument cluster was fine until the old engine blew. Now has a 99 olds eighty eight LSS engine and since it's been in the instrument cluster just shuts off and then turns back on immediately.
What would be nice is if they said where to buy the "speedometer step promotor". Anyone know where?
Ok man so I've asked ever shop in a 50 Mile radis about a solder sucker where on Earth did you find that
My gauges on the right side don't work but everything else does what could be the issue?
My 04 Silverado has had some instrument cluster issues for some time now (engine light randomly turning on and off for days at a time, cycling between languages, or turning off completely... with no response from the thin button on the panel)... any ideas on what would be a fix to this?
It's how I'm learning French! Just purchased in 04 that does that
The whole point is that the giage doesn't work... bit put tape and mark where the needles are when you turn it on.
Wait, where was the weld for the ground issue???
So my brother didn’t upgrade on that to a newer one and he took it in to the Chevy dealership when he arrives to pick up his vehicle on the way back to work it started flickering and everything off everything else was off and it goes on sometimes every now and then how can we fix it because now I’m the owner of that Tahoe
Semed to have happened on same era chevrolet cavaliers, maybe 02 and on (or even earlier) - not sure if the cure was the same .
i own a 2007 silverato pickup. a light on the gauges showed a closed padlock and the engine will not turn over . i cleaned the battery terminal and checked out the battery battery .ok. any way to clear it
Good.. But where at the hell you bought the step motor?
Amazon
My button does not seem to work. It keeps changing to Spanish . I saw a short 42 second (or so) video of one doing the same thing. But not how to fix
Issue I have is noisy stepper motors been replaced any still noisy any thoughts
So I’ve already replaced the switch and I’m still having the issue where my dash won’t light up on the speedometer any idea ?
Nice when u have all the stuff u need to fix it yeah thanks
I have 2003 Hummer h2 I have a hard time to re solder my speedometer I try but I puck up cut the trace how much do you charges for it thank you
My p r drive all that and the miles don’t show on mine how do I fix that?
I got an weird issue the only gauges that work are the tachometer and speedometer! My radio, windows, and mirrors stopped working as well. The battery is slowly draining, check engine light, ABS, and Air Bag lights also came on when this happened! I jumped the truck an everything worked! Got back in truck the next day it was dead, replaced the battery, an alternator! Still same issue, so I replaced dash cluster! Every thing worked for a day then back to slowly draining battery! No gauges work, but tachometer and speedometer dome light always on! Ob2 reader doesn't connect, and neither did the fancy scan tool. Do you have any suggestions?
UPDATE replaced motor to chassis ground an hood to chassis still problems
Great video
What if my clall my gouges work, including odometer, but the odometer isn't registering miles?
This should fix my odometer too as its not reading either?
