Thank you for your video. I was steered all over the board by looking at many other videos looking for broken solder joints with no luck solving my problem until I found yours. Again👍
You ROCK!! Just did this a couple hours ago after they were out for maybe 10 years. Redid around ten or so joints and three were definitely cold. Up until now I was pressuring the odometer reset button with the bottom of a bic lighter to light it up. Excellent tutorial. Thank you!!
I watched 6 other sites before finding your fix for PRNDL, (PARK - REVERSE - NUTRAL - DRIVE - LOW) display. Your demonstration is crystal clear. Thank you VERY much.
Gonna be doing this soon. I just bought a 1500 with 300kish miles for $1400. It has this exact problem. And before anybody passes judgement for my buying decision, this truck has been serviced regularly and has about 200 pages of service records dating all the way back. And this is the only known issue it has for that amount of miles. Runs and drives nearly perfect. Not one leak in the exhaust. And immaculate interior. Under the hood was slightly dusty. But still clean. Even the frame has no rust holes. Floorplans are solid. Body and bed mounts are still strong. Very well maintained. Tires have maybe 10k miles on them. Typical rocker and rear wheel well rust. Still looks and drives better than most with less than half the miles this one has.
Just finished repairing my prndl light per your video. Took about 40 minutes and I can see my mileage again!! Thank you for your precise video was easy. Been subscribed. 😃
Finally fixed the PRND in my suburban. Followed this guys procedure and it worked perfectly. Only difference on mine was the bad soldering joints this guy shows were fine on my truck. I did find some bad solder joints near the top of the display (on the back). Once re-soldered it works perfectly. Thank you.
Yes! Yes! Yes! THANK YOU!!!!! Finally got off my butt and purchased a small soldering tool and followed your directions, after viewing it at least 3 times to make sure I was going to do things correctly and sure enough it worked and am very grateful for you video on the repair. Keep up the great work!!!!! Richard
I have watched a lot of these specific repair videos. Yours is the best. You describe every single step and talk clearly, easy to follow and understand. Excellent, Thank You.
This was a great video for such a common, frustrating problem. I like the video quality and lighting. This makes a DIY repair seem like a piece of cake. Kudos and thank you.
Just finished your fix on my 1999 GMC Sierra. Odometer/Trip/ Gear display has been off for months. Followed your advice all the way through. Soldering went well after the careful fold back of the display. Soldered the two end wires as they looked disconnected completely. Works great now, all back together Thanks so much. Mike
Best videos I've seen that gets to the point. Great close up video to show what to look for. Have a 1999 Silverado that I had the display professionally repaired in 2001 for over $100. Repaired it myself this time in under 30 minutes.
I am extremely grateful for your video. How you did the layout, the detailed explanations. It's like spectacular coming from someone who knows bsolutely. nothing about vehicles except one pedel, makes it go, and the other 1 makes it stop. That is about the extent of my knowledge when it comes to vehicles. I applaud you, sir, for taking the time out of your day to make this video. It was extremely helpful. I would not have been able to fix this or afford to have someone fix it for me. Thank you again. Please keep up the good work. Thank you.
Worked great !! It was exactly the pin you said! I watched another video to take it out and your video to repair. Took me literally 15 mins. Pissed off I didn't fix this sooner. ❤❤
Just completed this process on my 2002 Silverado 1500HD. I re-soldered four connections that looked cracked. My display works great now! Thank you for posting!
I have a 2002 Chevy Silverado 1500 HD, had the same problem with mine that stopped showing the PND21, Odometer and Trip Mileage too. I did exactly the same thing of re-soldering any connections that looked dry or loose - reassembled the dashboard and it now works like it used to. Thank you for this video !!!!
Thank you very much, I found the one broken solder point on my 2000 GMC 2500 Sierra , soldered it and now I can see my odometer. 5 stars easy fix saved me around $500.00 bucks too.
Can't thank you enough for this video. Display was burned out in the truck I just bought and I was ready to spend several hundred dollars sending the cluster out to be "rebuilt". I was able to fix it myself for the cost of a $5 soldering iron off Amazon and about 30 minutes time. Thank you
Ok, So to start I already pulled my gauge cluster to replace the lights with blue Leds. (you may want to do this if you are going to remove the dash cluster anyway they look so much better than the oem). Anyway, I was able to remove the dash cluster again and follow the instructions provided in the video easily. A couple things to note. He is right on dead balls accurate (thanks Marissa). You need to be careful when you remove the circuit board from the the cluster, IT IS PLASTIC so take it easy. It will slide off easily if you gently pry it off. The circuit board on the RND cluster is easily visible. When you pry off the circuit backing back you will be able to see the separate RND box circuit board. Unplug the little cable that is hanging you up (again be gentle if you break it you are screwed). After you pry up the RND board you will see the missing solder on the board with a nice prong sticking through. One small drop of rosin core solder on that hole/prong will work. You can check like I did by plugging in the cluster (CAREFULLY) to see if it works properly before re-assembling. Check all those solder connections but the bad one was clearly visible. . That being said don't get crazy/ The problem area was clearly visible on the board. If you start re-soldering all those contacts even if they don't need it you may easily overheat or fry the board, Fix the missing contact point and get out of there. lol My mech who is a good guy quoted me $500 to r&r this gauge panel and make it work. This is a GREAT video and at this particular time it is a blessing to have this fella's help.
Thanks! Your fix was right on... ONE wire was cracked.. Got it all put back together... worked great... THEN I saw the back cover sitting on the table.... Take the dash apart again..... Put ALL the pieces back... (double check too) Yup,, still working!!! No screws left over either!!
Thanks for taking the time to make the video! Our 2002 suburban had the problem of the display working intermittently. we would tap on it and it would work sometimes but eventually stopped altogether. I had figured that it was a loose connection but figured it would be hard to get to or repair. No problem with your video. Every thing works as it should and the whole project was only about 30 minutes.
Thanks for the guidance. I just saved mysel $500. The soldering wasn't simple with the lead free solder but I managed to do a decent job. I haven't seen the odometer for two years. Now I'm going to change all of the bulbs to LEDs. Thanks again.
Thank you! Just used this to fix my 2002 2500 PRNDL display. Even under magnification, my pin looked mostly good, but some slightly darker spots right at the wire connection for the wire you identified. Did solder on both sides of the board and lights came on right away after being reconnected.
My cluster was totally dead. I had cracked solder joints on exactly the same resistors shown in the video. A little rosin flux and solder to reflow I was back in business. Thanks!
Great video pointed me in the right direction of where to look inside the cluster, but my issue wasn't with the pins at all. It ended up being the resistors next to the display had gotten so hot they had melted there poorly done solder joints from high heat of florida and long road trips. finally able to see the mileage/trip meter on my 02 duramax for the first time in almost 10 years.
Thanks! Just saved me $$ ... Excellent video & an easy fix. I’ve got 212k miles on my 2001 Yukon XL & this has been an intermittent problem for quite a while...but no more!
I did fix it though it was not those joints as I ended up doing them all. There are a couple Cap's that on my second attempt looked cracked, soldered up and voila'. Thanks for getting me in the right direction. You Rock
With your guidance I was able to find the problem it was infacted the top one and added some solder on it and the bottom one. It took me about 30 minutes to fix my problem and now it works. Thank you for your help and saved me $200. Thank you again God bless you and your family.
Thank you, Brian. I am my girlfriend's hero!! It was so easy with you great video and step by step instructions. Can't wait to watch more of your great videos.
Awesome. Fix was as simple as shown. 1999 GMC Sierra, a real nuisance, been that way since 3 years old. Thanks mucho.... Was ready to spend $150 on a used one an hope it worked!
Hey Brian, great stuff and very professional! On my 05 Sierra 2500HD the lights work but are so dim they might as well be off. Would this procedure fix my problem?
Very well done, Bri! What is the normal diag for the Information Center (Escalade) in the cluster not working or even lighting up? I was told by a cluster repair guy on eBay that they would just replace the screen but I'm wondering if its going to be a similar solder issue as the odometer? The guy is selling this service for $50 for just the odometer. Thanks~
MY 01 Silverado gauge cluster intermittently loses display.I discovered that pushing the reset rod in will light the gauges as long as I keep the rod pushed in.
Great tutorial thank you help me a lot with my Chevy avalanche how about doing one on a 2004 Kia Spectra speedometer only works when the car is cold afterwards when it gets hot it stops working
Finally got fed up with my display disappearing, and found your video. Should this fix my fuel gauge dropping to 0g and my low fuel light coming on too? If so, I'm breaking out the solder gun!
just to clarify, i thought you said the gauges had to be unsoldered from the board, yet i didnt see you do that ore resolder them to the board. or did i misunderstand and they just press together to make the connection? mine is so dim i cant see it except at night when its dark. to anyone who did this, can you answer my question and if this fixes a very dim LED as well
Thanks for this great vid. Good clean work & explanation. I'm going to try this on my truck. Any insights for my fuel gauge. It jumps all around and doesn't give me an accurate reading. My research concluded removing the cluster and soldering, but I have yet to find the exact repair for my issue. Any advice??
Jackie Speaks my 2001 Silverado was having the same issues, and it just stopped one day. I had it towed to a shop and they told me the fuel pump needed to be changed. After it was done the needle reads correctly and doesn't flinch. Unfortunately it wasn't a cheap repair
Travis Sahlin Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I just replaced the fuel pump on a 2003 Ford Taurus that had a leaking fuel pump and it wasn't cheap😕. However, the fuel gauge on the taurus never faulted like the truck. Now, the truck seems to be next.😒 Can't catch a break😧 story of my life.. #greasemonkeylife
Damn it Travis!!! I am pretty sure that is exactly what I'm going to have to do :( , but dayyyyummm, its going to be more expensive than I was hoping for....
Thank you for this video. MY PRNDL and Odometer do not work. My solder points look excellent and i do not see any other broken solder anywhere. I know it is not a fuse issue because all other lights on the cluster work. Any idea what the issue could be?
So on my 02 Silverado it doesn’t ever cut out it’s always lit up but over the years the light gets more dull now to see the mileage I have to hold my hands over it to make it dark would that be the same issue or is that something else?
I have a 99 GMC Sierra that the odometer and PRND321 flickers off and on in half sections. I assume this video is the fix for that but the gauges, tach, speedometer will go off and the battery light comes on. Then I hit a bump and it all comes back on again. That started around the time I installed a backup camera to my stereo. The flickering odometer started much later. Ideas or comments?
How do you remove a dimmer switch (windshield lever) for a Pontiac Aztek 2001? @Do it yourself Bri The ignition switch and the lever make it impossible to take off the top cover. (The ignition switch has a type of exterior cover ;stands out from the cover)
i have a question, maybe 2. Seems how you know your stuff when it comes to the control of these clusters. in my case 2007 Trailblazer LT 4.2L Q1. is there a way to turn off (disable) the DIC. 100% Q2. In lieu of turning off the all DIC 100%, is there certain communication wires (color sensitive) that are ok to remove/cut from behind the pin connection that reads (service tire monitor) and (service stabilitrak) I watched another video where a man added communication on his older base trailblazer cluster, with a communication wire that was already present, and simply grounded that wire, and he gained a feature on the DIC for fuel averaging. With this I realized, that maybe, just maybe there is a separate communication wire from the bus, to the cluster for each logic feature. OR do all the DIC communication come into the pin behind the dash with just 1 wire? I can put tape on the warning lights for these two issues, but the at the message center (DIC) I would prefer to just remove that logic as described above and still keep my Odometer reads and other programmable features. Hope to hear back soon,, Thanks Please let me know
i got a 99 silverado and thre prndl display and the mileage display is all togather, and they use to work but kept going off and u could tap the top of dash and they would come back on, but now there completely out. would the problem be in the back or under the top where u have to pop the needles out, im kinda iffy on popping those out.
I have a 2000 Silverado and my prnd321 lights but won’t indicate what gear I’m in, doesn’t hurt nothing just annoying how do I fix? Also none of my back lighting on the instrument cluster works and I’ve already taken it apart and it’s good any help? Thanks for any help
Tried this on mine, had no obvious cracks or loose connections but I resoldered them anyway since my gauge would only work intermittently. Now that I reassembled it I have none at all any suggestions?
good afternoon ! everything good, I would like a help if possible, I am in Brazil and here the blazer 2002 has the totally analog panel, there is the gear indicator engaged, can I use the panel of the North American blazer in the Brazilian? will it be that the Brazilian blazer has in the wire plug the gear sensor for the panel?
I have a 2007 equinox, the gauge cluster had the PRNDIL lights work fine even when shifting. Replaced the gauge cluster cause of 2 bad stepper motors, and now when I shift to D it goes from N to I. What could be my issue?
I wonder if it can be a bad fuse. Cant find 1 in the diagram just for the PRNDL display though. Trying to avoid soldering if I can help it. Got a 2005 Yukon. Did you ever fix your problem?
I tried it on mine and did find one of the prongs loose. I did get it to light up, but it's only showing the PRDNL and not showing the gear that I select, also the mileage is just showing 8888888 or 000000.
Today, the PRNDL and Odometer digital lights came on, wow. But for how long ? It turns off for 1 month and comes back on for one day or 2. What is going on?
Thank you for your video. I was steered all over the board by looking at many other videos looking for broken solder joints with no luck solving my problem until I found yours. Again👍
Sir you are a gentlemen and a scholar. I was helping a buddy and with this guide had the job done in 15 minutes.
Mines was actually the top part where those three brown looking cylinders are. Soldered that and made it work. Thanks for the video!

This problem has been driving me crazy. I have a 2005 GMC 1500HD, its a great truck! I will try this over the weekend, thanks!
1 year later. Did it work for you Micah?
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Much appreciated!
Thank you, bought a truck and the display didn’t work. Watched this video and fixed it in 10 minutes! Good as new now!
Thank you! Just used this to fix my 2002 2500 PRNDL display. Even under magnification, my pin looked mostly good, but some slightly darker spots right at the wire connection for the wire you identified. Did solder on both sides of the board and lights came on right away after being reconnected.

Thanks, came across your video on this DIY project. I followed your instructions and it corrected my problem.
Thanks for the info and Big Help
I did fix it though it was not those joints as I ended up doing them all. There are a couple Cap's that on my second attempt looked cracked, soldered up and voila'. Thanks for getting me in the right direction. You Rock
Thank you you saved me big money

Thank you, Brian. I am my girlfriend's hero!! It was so easy with you great video and step by step instructions. Can't wait to watch more of your great videos.
Awesome. Fix was as simple as shown. 1999 GMC Sierra, a real nuisance, been that way since 3 years old. Thanks mucho.... Was ready to spend $150 on a used one an hope it worked!
THANK YOU! soldered mine and it worked like a charm. the exact spot you pointed to on here you said was the usual place was cracked. lol
Nice video, that was the exact problem on a 2000 suburban, got to love youtube
I have a video for the 2003+ cluster on the same issues. Thanks for sharing and keep fixing Bri !
I just get it done after watching your video, I hope it works
Thanks bro I got mine fixed!!! Now to fix my wife's 2001 yukon
Thanks for the great video and step by step tutoring, seems that this issue, and fuel pump was a few major problems for GM 99-02 pick ups and suburban
Hey Brian, great stuff and very professional! On my 05 Sierra 2500HD the lights work but are so dim they might as well be off. Would this procedure fix my problem?
I JUST FIX MY SILVERADO 3500, THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.
Excellent vid and worked 100%. Saved time & money at the shop. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much...it worked! Don't forget to put the black back cover on!
Very well done, Bri! What is the normal diag for the Information Center (Escalade) in the cluster not working or even lighting up? My display comes on initially and then goes off. Do you think your instructions cover my issue?
MY 01 Silverado gauge cluster intermittently loses display.I discovered that pushing the reset rod in will light the gauges as long as I keep the rod pushed in.
Great tutorial thank you help me a lot with my Chevy avalanche how about doing one on a 2004 Kia Spectra speedometer only works when the car is cold afterwards when it gets hot it stops working
Lmao I just go on a bumpy road & my 02 gmc sierra extended cab will tell me LOL
This is almost like a guaranteed fix soon as i opened it up i seen the broken solder joint, fixed it popped it right back in on 30 mins. !!
Just fixed mine today! Thank you so much!
Thank you for the video. Fixed my display this morning. Quick and easy.
awesome video. saved me from going to a wrecker for a replacement cluster. what he did i can do.
Thank you brother, easy to follow video
Finally got fed up with my display disappearing, and found your video. Should this fix my fuel gauge dropping to 0g and my low fuel light coming on too?
If so, I'm breaking out the solder gun!
I had that problem but it was my fuel pump
Fuel pump issue with my 2005 Yukon. Low fuel Light keeps coming on.
Thank you buddy for the informative video,,, it's a huge help for sure....
just to clarify, i thought you said the gauges had to be unsoldered from the board, yet i didnt see you do that ore resolder them to the board. or did i misunderstand and they just press together to make the connection? mine is so dim i cant see it except at night when its dark. to anyone who did this, can you answer my question and if this fixes a very dim LED as well
When you pulled off the circuit board did you have to remove the indicator needles as well?
On that year of truck you do not need to pull the needles off to repair the prndl.. What year make and model do you have?
we have the same helping hand tool, very cool
Thanks. It did help a lot.
Can you help me with my climate control?
I have the vid for the 2003-2007 on my channel. Thanks for sharing
Is it the same if all the back lights on the dash and the PRNDL is not displayed?? I have a 2002 4x4 Sonoma. Thanks for posting your videos
most likely not... usually if all the lights are out its a problem with wiring or the dimmer switch on the dash
Hell yeah! Nice vid. Does this work for manual shifting gmc?
Thanks for this great vid. Good clean work & explanation. I'm going to try this on my truck. Any insights for my fuel gauge. It jumps all around and doesn't give me an accurate reading. My research concluded removing the cluster and soldering, but I have yet to find the exact repair for my issue. Any advice??
Jackie Speaks your fuel pump might be nearing the end of it's life
Thanks! I'll check it out Travis.
So if your solder joints are still good and no fuses out you just need to replace the instrument cluster?
Not exactly a truck, but my 2003 Impala has this same issue. Hopefully I can do the same fix.
Thank you for this video. MY PRNDL and Odometer do not work. My solder points look excellent and i do not see any other broken solder anywhere. I know it is not a fuse issue because all other lights on the cluster work. Any idea what the issue could be?
Most likely a problem with the circuit board some place... However not sure exactly.
So on my 02 Silverado it doesn’t ever cut out it’s always lit up but over the years the light gets more dull now to see the mileage I have to hold my hands over it to make it dark would that be the same issue or is that something else?

How do you remove a dimmer switch (windshield lever) for a Pontiac Aztek 2001?
@Do it yourself Bri
The ignition switch and the lever make it impossible to take off the top cover. (The ignition switch has a type of exterior cover ;stands out from the cover)
I will have to see if I can find some info on that... Have you had any luck?
No, not really.
Awesome detailed video good job man
what would be the problem if only half of the prndl display is lit? i can see park reverse neutral and half of odometer. thanks man.
Wow. Thats a good question. Did you ever fix that problem?
i have a question, maybe 2.
Seems how you know your stuff when it comes to the control of these clusters.
in my case 2007 Trailblazer LT 4.2L
Q1. is there a way to turn off (disable) the DIC. 100%
Q2. In lieu of turning off the all DIC 100%, is there certain communication wires (color sensitive) that are ok to remove/cut from behind the pin connection that reads (service tire monitor) and (service stabilitrak)
I watched another video where a man added communication on his older base trailblazer cluster, with a communication wire that was already present, and simply grounded that wire, and he gained a feature on the DIC for fuel averaging.
With this I realized, that maybe, just maybe there is a separate communication wire from the bus, to the cluster for each logic feature. OR do all the DIC communication come into the pin behind the dash with just 1 wire?
I can put tape on the warning lights for these two issues, but the at the message center (DIC)
I would prefer to just remove that logic as described above and still keep my Odometer reads and other programmable features.
How about swapping out all the small push bulbs with LED bulbs, if available, while you have the panel disassembled?
+Chris Phillips Not a bad idea!

I have a 2000 Silverado and my prnd321 lights but won’t indicate what gear I’m in, doesn’t hurt nothing just annoying how do I fix? Also none of my back lighting on the instrument cluster works and I’ve already taken it apart and it’s good any help? Thanks for any help
work great . awesome job and video thanks for the help
Brilliant video,,thanks for sharing 💙
Is it the same procedure for a 2003 Crew cab? Or what should I do?
hey do you have any idea if this would be a fix if the lights are faint(as in you cant really see them at all) but not all the way off ?
This worked! Thank you.
Fixed my problem perfectly!
Thank you
Thank you sir for sharing.
Tried this on mine, had no obvious cracks or loose connections but I resoldered them anyway since my gauge would only work intermittently. Now that I reassembled it I have none at all any suggestions?
it fucking worked had my gov yukon for five years and never knew the miles til today . thanks for sharing.
Once fixed do you think it showed correct milege
What are the miles?
good afternoon ! everything good, I would like a help if possible, I am in Brazil and here the blazer 2002 has the totally analog panel, there is the gear indicator engaged, can I use the panel of the North American blazer in the Brazilian? will it be that the Brazilian blazer has in the wire plug the gear sensor for the panel?
I have a 2007 equinox, the gauge cluster had the PRNDIL lights work fine even when shifting. Replaced the gauge cluster cause of 2 bad stepper motors, and now when I shift to D it goes from N to I. What could be my issue?
Thanks for the tutorial, I learned and fixed my 2002 Suburban cluster.....
Did the miles go back to where they were before, or where they should be?
My odometer display went out just a few hours ago. Took everything out checked every solder, nothing. No crack's or anything anywhere.
Does it matter what soldering gun you use?
Today, the PRNDL and Odometer digital lights came on, wow. But for how long ? It turns off for 1 month and comes back on for one day or 2. What is going on?
