I just want to thank you so much for this video! I almost spent over 200 bucks on a cluster! Instead spent 15 bucks on stepper motors and maybe 20 bucks on tools. Never soldered before. Thanks to your detailed, easy, step-by-step video, my gauges and bulbs are back to normal! Wish I could buy you a beer bro! Thank you again!
Easily the best description of this task on youtube. Very informative without "too much information" that over-complicates the job unnecessarily. Thanks!
Ordered the suggested motors, installed, etc, everything worked flawlessly. Awesome walk-through down to the detail. The fork to remove and tape to keep it's calibration suggestion was 5*. (I used a knife under the fork to prevent dents by fork). Turned possibly $400+ into $30. Keep up the good work, guy!
Whipsters Idle Thank You!!
Thank you for this video. I fixed my 2003 Chevy Tahoe with no issue. It was my first time ever using a soldering iron! Feeling pretty proud of myself!
+Sarah Bohren Thank You!
Very good illustration on this tutorial .. you went from A to Z ... and helped me and I'm sure a lot of people ... Keep up the great work .... You or a god send....
This was the best video on youtube for this. You actually showed everything you need to know and the camera was steady and in focus.
THANK YOU!!!
I've been dealing with no speedometer or any other gauges for that matter for YEARS! This video gave me the courage to pull the dash and fix it myself vs. paying the dealership $500. It cost me $50 and about 3 hours but now I have all my gauges working again! I also replaced all the lights while I was in there and everything works perfectly. Thank you for this video!!!!!
This video has been immeasurably helpful as I did my '05 Suburban.$30 for 6 stepper motors, $25 for a desoldering iron and about 1-1/2 hours labor (could've been 1 hour, but I'm extra slow & meticulous).ALOT less than the $200+ it would cost to have a dealer do it.THANKS SO MUCH, BRIAN !! I'm a subscriber now !!
+pacrattracing Thank You!
Thank you so much for your help!! My cluster was out for almost 3 years and thanks to you instead of paying $400 it only cost my wife and our friend $30!! Thank you thank you thank you!!
Thanks!
Well done, clear & concise instruction. The only critique I have is to caution soldering novices on damaging the pc board. I know you mentioned it but a little more on the damage that overheating can cause.
lektrikbass Thank you, that is a very good point!
dealership told my customer his ecm was bad because his cluster stopped working. they wanted $1,200 to fix it. i found your video & replaced the steper motors like you did. thanks bud, you saved my customer $1,100. i told him if he didn't mind me experimenting & it works, I'll do it for $100. we are both happy.
04 GMC EnVoy, where do U get the stepper motors from?
"Its a good idea to pay attention to which needle goes where, when you're taking them off." lol..., the moment you took them off I thought that to myself.. just tape them down next to their respective dials. Anyway, this is a great video... thats all there is to it.. thanks
My needle doesn't work. They are down. the only one is in good condition is the one in the midle.
Great job!!! I was able to perform this repair in under a half hour after watching this video. Going by the research I have done doing it myself saved me between $600 and $1200!!! You did a great job with this video and I look forward to watching more of your videos. Thank you for doing this I really appreciate it
+John Bragg Thanks I'm glad it helped!
IT WORKED!!! I must say.. I was scared to do it. but I pray and it worked out. I was going to be charged $300 to fix it and I paid $56 to fix it my self. Thank you so much.
Great video. All of my motor gauges are non functional on my 2003 Silverado, but some are stuck at various positions, fuel is stuck at the 7 o'clock position. How would I calibrate/correct the position when installing a new stepper motor? Also, do you have a link to order these stepper motors?
+Darrell Yazzie You can call my cell at 385-439-7035. I can sell them to you please leave a message if I don't answer. I can give you more instructions with the purchase of the stepper motors. Thanks
Darrell Yazzie I
i have tge same problem
Amazon has them as well as the tools. You can even get a fork;)
Thanks a lot, I just fixed someone else's repair who obviously didn't calibrate them. Worked great.
Thank you so very much for making this video. I used a different video to assist with my taking off the dash trim and removing the instrument cluster, and then used this video to assist with replacing 4 stepper motors in a 2004 Impala. I spent 17 bucks on Amazon for the stepper motor / LED light kit, and 11 bucks on a quality solder sucker tool. A few hours later everything was put back together tight and all my gauges are working like they should.
Without your help, my Impala would still be doing 110 mph while parked (broken spedometer / stepper motor). You are the best!
+Nega Stoat Thanks!
Your tape idea is awesome. I paid $22 on eBay for a kit with motors and soldering tool. I replaced all three motors tonight and used the tape idea. Everything went perfectly and all working. First time soldering.
Yo man your awesome got my speedo running like new appreciate it
Hey bri... i have a 2004 gmc yukon denali how do i replace the stepper motors and bulbs? By the way great video 👍
Ramel Stevens The cluster is basically the same as the one in the video. You can also replace the bulbs when you have it apart. Let me know if you need the motors I have them in stock 801-292-1331
I do and i need the l.e.d bulbs..
Ramel Stevens I don't have and l.e.d bulbs, however I have I standard bulbs.
Ok how do i purchase ur stepper motors? Do i replace them all?
Ramel Stevens You can call the shop tomorrow 801-292-1331 8am 6pm MTN Time. I would defiantly recommend replacing all motors, while you have the cluster apart. The old motors were defective and fail all the time, however the new ones I will send you last much longer and may never fail.
Thanks for your help. i just changed four stepper motors in my 2005 Impala guage cluster for about 30 bucks & 3 hours worth of elbow grease. Surgery was a success. A professional de-solderer is a must, the pins are small and de-soldering wick doesn't do that much good.
Good video!
Thanks!
I found this to be one of the best videos I've watched. It was perfect in every way. I now know how to fix my 2004 Buick's fuel gauge problem. Thanks
Can i send you my 2004 Yukon Cluster and you fix it for me?
I would if you're still in need.
My friends instruments in the Enoy cluster hasn't worked for 3 yrs so I pulled up you tube and typed in repir cluster and this mans site came up and i fallowed his video and my friend and I fixed her wifes cluster. Thank you so much
Thanks!
Thank you for sharing. Ordered my stepper motors off Amazon. Got them in last week. Replaced them the same day and once again I have all my gauges working !
+Nancy Chvarak That's Great!
Thanks for video. I was able to repair the tach and speedometer in my 04 Silverado. I replaced all 6 steppers. Saved $200.
Thanks a lot!!!!
Thanks!
Great tutorial. I must say be careful on the pads to anyone trying this. I attempted the fix and tore the circuit board pads off. Going to attempt to reinstall my cluster this morning. Not sure if it will work.
Just be aware, anyone who is a soldering novice, the desoldering can be tricky. All else worked! And your video inspired me to try! Thanks!
Thanks Bri. Replaced stepper motors on my 04 Montana. Temperature gauge stuck at max, not very safe... Saved a bundle. Continue your good work!
Great Video. Strait forward. Very easy to do after watching you. Just fixed my 2003 Suburban gauges. They all worked great. For those watching. Get the desolder gun like his with the pump. makes it very easy.
Great detailed video!!! I have a 2006 trailblazer and some of the lights in the dash are out too. It would probably make sense to change the stepper motors and replace the bulbs at the same time!
I found this very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!
Thank you for the tip on putting on the needle. My f150 gauge was way off I wasn't sure how to adjust it. I'll try it today and hopefully I should be good
This is a really good training session. I do have one question. My needles are pegged out so do I set them to the pegged out place?
Thanks for the awesome in depth vid!!! One question tho, what do you do when there is a little stub the needle rests on???
So many videos don't tell how to get the needles back in place in the correct position. This is very clear. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for this video. I replaced all 3 of my stepper motors in my 2004 Impala and they are working great.
thank you bri, i think i can do this, however i am having a hard time finding replacement motors or an original part number for the stepper motors in my 2000 blazer ls 4wd 2 dr. any suggestions?
well informed video but my question is : if this is such a common problem on GM 2003-2006 was is there not a recall on them ? I have both a 2004 Buick Rendezvous and a 2005 Buick LeSaber with the same problem.
Awesome man! Thanks for making this video. I have a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer and the speedometer, oil pressure and fuel gauges are not functioning correctly or at all. I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars that I don't have to have someone fix it for me so I plan on doing it all myself. The only purchase I need is a soldering iron/pump and a T15 tool and the stepper motors!
Very helpful video thanks for sharing your secrets. I am a mechanic and have just recently discovered how easy you can fix clusters I fixed my odometer on my buick century the other day by soldering new resistors in. One question where do you recommend buying the stepper motors ebay?
Best stepper motor change/cluster repair video I've seen. Wish I saw it before I fixed mine.
great How-to video. my 04 envoy speed, coolant temp is off. I had 1 question,, when u soldered in the new step motor and checked for any loose soldering points. if 1 is loose wld u desolder it, or just add more solder on top?
Mine is from AMAZON
Thanks, DIY Bri! My new stepper motors and LEDs should arrive tomorrow. Now I can get right to work when they arrive.
Mike Harris j
Very good! Clearly explained, with good camera technique. Now I have to buy a DEsoldering iron.
Great video... great that you explain all the steps... thank you. In my situation, ALL of the gauges are not working. Do you think there is ONE THING that would cause all 6 gauges to fail at the same time? Thanks in advance.
Thank you i will try this, When the gauges do not work does it look like no power? I will be working on a 04 trailblazer.
Normally the gauges just stick or jump around.
Thank you Bri! That is an excellent video and I can't wait to fix it myself!
Worked for my 05 Impala!...FYI all my needles were hanging down at 6 oclock.....seemed as if they were way too out of whack to even try to do this..but it still worked!..Thanks!
Bri, you are amazing... Thank you so much for the awesome video. Fixed my 2004 Silverado right up in no time. Thanks again you rock!
I own 2005 Silverado which the speedometer starts at40 instead of 0.
All other gauges seem fine. This is a new purchase and I don’t know much about the truck at this time.
The video helped. Thanks, J
Great video! Changed all six stepper motors in my 04 Trailblazer. Your video is perfect. I am not a GM man but this is a well engineered vehicle. The only problem I have found is that some of the components are very low quality, i.e. the circuit boards in the instrument cluster, radio, climate control, etc. Stepper Motors and Light Bulbs should be on push pins rather that soldered in. Keep up the good work!
Thank you posting this video it's really helpful. My gas gauge is acting funny and now I think I can actually fix it myself. Keep posting helpful videos myself and many others appreciate it 👏👏
I think this was a great video. I was able to safe 400 to 600 dollars by doing it myself and some help from a friend. thinking about starting a business repairing that to make a few buck and safe other alot. Thank you again
Great video! I'm thinking I will attempt fixing the cluster in my 04 Tahoe. It looks pretty straight forward but I do have a question. Will replacing the stepper motors fix the gear selector window and message center window being blank? My entire cluster is totally out, no gauges, no indicator symbol lights like cruise, nothing in gear selector window and nothing in message center.
Great video!! I do have a question. My temp gauge on my 2004 envoy has stopped working so I need to replace the stepper motor on it. But, the needle has fallen well below the normal range so how would I calibrate the temp gauge to the new motor since I have no starting point to go by?
If you cant find the starting point before you pull the needle off... Just pull the needle off solder in the new stepper motor and install the needle pointing at 12:00, than push the needle back and forth, forcing it back and forth until the starting point of the needle is just below the lowest mark of the temp gauge about the width of the needle below the lowest mark of the temp gauge. (maybe a touch more than that)
Hope that helps
this video helped a lot! now I'm having to replace fuel lines on my 2003 gmc yukon...I am having major issues accessing the bolt on bracket located there the transmission and engine bolt together. other than removing the intake manifold which I'd rather not do I can't find the truck to removing these let alone see them. thank you in advance for any help on this dilemma and keep up the good work
ive followed your video precisely and am excited to fix my annoying needles, but i got stuck when it came to finding (3) x27 stepper motors. you had so many! but where did you get them? i called a few parts stores and they only have the whole cluster for sale. which of the sketchy online sellers did you buy from?
bought a H2 03 few months ago a week later Rpm gauge started acting wanky and now the emgine temp gauge so thanks to this video i plan on repairing this myself instead of spending the 500-650 that people are requesting on ebay for a new cluster. thanks for the vid!!
+Jamal Body Grafiti Your welcome, thanks!
I have watched your videos and they are very help and detailed i was wondering if you could help me .I have a 2004 Trailblazer and the gauges are max out even when its off all but the temp gauge works. what would you think it could be? Thanks Jeremy
Neither of my vehicles have the type cluster you repaired in this video but I watched anyway because I was impressed with the conduct. I do have a 1988 chevy van G20 which has now a very noisy/erratic speedometer (especially in cold weather). Thinking it was lack of cable lube I had that service done (mechanic charged me $100 to lube the cable) but still have the same snapping scrapping sound with a bouncing needle. Checked back with the mechanic doing the lube and he said the problem was the gear assembly in the gauge itself. I shiver to think what he would charge for that service. Can you give me some insight
Thanks for your great video. I have suspected bad stepper motors but was not sure. I've had the inst panel go dark & found a cracked trace on the circuit board where the gnd wire connects. Over time, the vibration of the cable harness transfers through the connector, and directly to the board connections. There should have been something to dampen the vibration, otherwise it's a failure point for sure. I tried your link for the stepper motor but found light bulbs instead. I'll search later. If you can, any recommendation will be appreciated. Outstanding video !!
Thank you for the most helpful information. The only criticism I have is watching you do the repairs on top of your tool box with not nearly enough room.
Very informational. I'll try to save it! You also did a video about removal and replacement of the VSS [sensor] but I'm not sure that it was specifically for Buick Century, 2004. Have you any additional videos re: Buick?
Thank you so much, I just finished using your directions, and it works great! Thank You for sharing this. Dan
Thanks! Glad I could help..
Hi! I have 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo....do you recalibrate the needles the same way as you did in this vid? Thank you!!!
I would think so..... However not sure, I have not pulled the needles off a Grand Cherokee...
Hey, Thanks for the video this worked great! I have a question though. Before doing this my AC and heater working perfectly on my 2004 GMC denali. Now everything still works except the drivers side air blows only HOT AIR no matter what I set the temp to. What could that be? To get the dials all perfect I had to detach and re attach the car battery like 4 times and pull the instrument cluster out and adjust. Could i have blown a fuse? I have very little experience doing this. This was my first solder job. Appreciate the help!!
Sounds like you have a problem with the temperature blend door inside the dash... Some times you can reset them with unplugging the heater control for about 30 min.... However the temperature blend door may need replaced or even the temperature control head.
Thanks for the video Bri. I have done a few of these previously. I just replaced the stepper motor in my 03 Tahoe (speedometer). The motor works nice and free until I plug the cluster in, then there seems to be a lot of resistence on the needle. It tries to move a little bit when driving but that is it. Tried another stepper motor, same thing. Circuit board damage? Thanks
+donna williams Yes I would bet there is Circuit board damage near the connection of the stepper motor. You have to be very careful not to get the board to hot when replacing them....
thank you very much for this video 👍😎 i have a chevy suburban 2004 and with this video i learn a lot , thank you very much God Bless You👍😎
Awesome , thanks for the video. Does a 2004 GMC c2500 need programming?
No programming needed
thanks bri... my temp, oil pressure and voltage steppers failed last year and I'm afraid that the others will go out any day now! great video! can I get those motors at a parts store? or can I get them from you?
great video I have a 04 escalade and the needles are all over the place so I have no idea were to mark what should I do
+Chuck Evans HHC-YG Push them down to the point that they bottom out (not past). That is your starting point. Make them before you remove them.
Any advice for speedometer not working on a 2000 Catera also fog lights stopped working bulbs are new?
Thanks, I just fixed my 2003 Silverado, I haven't had a speedometer in years, your video was very helpful, probably couldn't a done it without it.
+Triple Play Thanks! I I'm glad it helped
This help me a lot. I do want to thank you... I'm going to try it. And pray that it work for me.
Hey Bry, Thank you for this video. I am pretty sure this was my problem. Back light works, turn signal lights good but gauges either didn't work or were intermittent. I ordered my stepper motors and replaced them as in your video but no luck. I have no movement on the gauges at all now. :( Could I have soldered incorrectly? Is there a certain type of flux I need? If I used too much solder could that stop them from working? Thanks for any help you can offer. I don't mind calling you if that is easiest. Cheers.
Great video well I need help on my jeep wrangler 2002 check engine light on exhaust is louder where sencer is mounted. Can you inliten me narrow it down.
is the process similar on older gm speedos? specifically, a 1985 c10
Hey, thanks for the video. I do have one question and that is where do you get the Stepper Motors from. I can not find any parts places around here that sell them.
Hey Bri! I have a 2000 Chevy Malibu.i was driving today and my fuel and oil floaters stopped working out of the blue. What should I do. I tried replacing the fuses on the driver side and nothing's changed
Thanks for all your tips. Will this fix my Fuel and Oil Pressure Dancing back and forward? Thanks
+michaelrramos1387 it very well could, what is the year make and model of your vehicle?
+Do It Yourself Bri 2000 Chevy Tahoe Limited 5.7 2wd
Love this video ! Enjoyed watching it !
+Paulina_Allure Thanks!
Thanks for the how to. I just replaced all of my stepper motors. It was real easy
Would I need to take my 2003 Yukon XL to the dealership to get it re-flashed once I reinstall it?
No you should not... I never have.
Great video. Would you happen to have one for a 99 Chevy Tahoe?
This is great information. Thank you.
Great video Bri. I was going to send my instrument cluster for my 2004 Pontiac Montana to get the speedometer and temp gauges fixed, but this looks like a piece of cake since I already have the soldering equipment. My only concern is that I can't find a good resource for the 2004 Montana that explains how to remove the part of the dash that covers the edge of the instrument cluster so that the cluster can be removed. Do you know of any good resources that explain the steps to get the cluster out of the dash? I'd rather not have to buy the full Chilton guide if I don't have to. How much of the dash needs to be removed on the Montana to get to the cluster? Thanks in advance for your help.
do Cadillac Escalade have same cluster as these stepper motor, my friends suv might need this where do I order from link?
So what was the hook tool used for? I don't have one and before I went out and bought one I wanted to see if it is necessary. Thanks.
+Jerry Aguilar The hook tool is not required, however makes it easier to remove the holding clips that fasten the front of the cluster together to the back of the cluster.
( reply )Well the shop checked the temp sensor, said it was good, suggested the dash cluster gage.
So should I try replacing the stepper motor ? Will the X27-168 work in a 2002 ?
Thanks,
Duane
I don't think they take the same stepper motor.... I have never changed a stepper motor on a 2002 HD I also own a 2002 Chevrolet 2500HD... I personally have never seen a stepper motor fail on that year... However its definitely possible, I just have never seen it before.... I would suspect a shorted wire or they did not test it correctly..
Could bad stepper motors also cause the mileage guage to not work as well? That's not working on my 04 Trailblazer and also the gauges. Wondered if the digital mileage not showing up was also coinciding with bad stepper Motors?
Unfortunately that is not the same problem...The mileage not showing up would most likely be a problem with the circuit board in the cluster.
My 1994 Cadillac Fleetwood digital cluster stays dark without lights until one bangs on the front plastic panel. Doing so allows the cluster lights to come on for a short time, but then they go dark, until one bangs on it again. What do you recommend one to do.
PS: your video repair explanation was great.
Thank you
Sam
Will I be able to un-solder the check engine LED and the ABS LED while I got the cluster board out on the bench?
Thanks Bri for the video!! Great instructions. I have a 2001 GMC Savana giving me fits with this error on my Gas gauge.
Since I purchased this van I have had several electrical problems. It seems a previous owner zip tied several wiring connectors together. Of course it caused the harness to cross several wires.. This was discovered by my mechanic and he wondered why it didn't burn to the ground... Is this a issue with this year model? I am now having issues in addition to the gas gauge with left brake lights not operating and the lights are dimmer one side to the other??? Any pointers?
1-The gas gauge is most likely do to a failed fuel level sending unit in the gas tank.. and or fuel pump wiring on top of the fuel tank.
2-The light problem could be a faild tail light socket board.. (this is the piece of the tail light the bulbs fit into) if you have power at the tail light wiring its likely a fault socket board
Do It Yourself Bri, is your suggestion based on the year model stepper motor being more reliable? I bought the van from a lot and I suspect the wiring mods being done there, so without a tear down there is no telling what I may find... To further the problem description, the gauge needle often vibrates at a high rate and then will drop to empty then back up to a semi accurate reading vibrating again. The gauge has never read full after a fill up. The check gauges light is on...
Hello Sir, thanks for this video. i just wonder where can i order this white stepper motors for Golv 4.
can you get those white things around the bulbs again? I noticed several around the bulbs I have in my chevy impala are kind of brown on some and cracked.
hi bri where can I get the stepper motors my sons 2003 Silverado 1500 does the same thing
Thanks for taking the time to do this.
+Sean Huynh Your Welcome..Thanks!
hi, very good your channel, a question knows if changing the instruments cluster of a chavy trailblazer 2004 for another one of a used car, you change the miles or keep those of the car to which I put it to, my question is why is it a instruments cluster electronic?
