Who's ever heard of an Irish Jew? Reflections on growing up Jewish in Ireland.

- Since moving to Israel in 2015, I've been asked on countless occasions what growing up Jewish in Ireland was like; how many Jews there are in Ireland; what whether I encountered any anti-Semitism while living there (among other questions).
I was born in Dublin, in 1989, but spent most of my childhood and young adulthood in Cork before emigrating to Israel.
I thought I would record this video to share some of my memories and reflections on all the questions I commonly get asked - and some more.
(This is essentially a re-recording of a video that I originally uploaded to RUclips about a year ago!)

My mother was a New York Jew, my father a Catholic from Northern Ireland, and I grew up in Dublin. Growing up I'd say I'm half Irish/half American, or half Jewish.
As an adult, I say I'm Irish AND American AND Jewish AND Northern Irish AND a Dubliner. They're not fractions.
I will say growing up I had no contact with a wider Jewish community, which is unfortunate.
I grew up near the synagogue in Terenure, Dublin. Most Jewish people I knew as a child now live in Manchester or New York. I knew one Jewish lady who emigrated to Israel a good few years ago. She just did not like it and now lives in Toronto and adores it. But it would be sad to see the Irish Jewish Community die out. I think the Conservative/Reform synagogue in Rathgar has an increased community.

I grew up in County Cork. I knew Gerald Goldberg, solicitor, a great man. He offered me a job as a solicitor. His wife was a great pianist. In one year there were three Jewish TDs in Ireland, 80s, I think, Ben Briscoe, Alan Shatter and Mervyn Taylor. At the same time there were two judges, Michael Barron and another who I cant remember. Alan Shatter lectured me at Law School in Dublin, good guy. I went to America and Africa and am now in London. I have met three Dublin jews in London, one his father played cricket for Ireland, small world.
Not involved in Israel/Palestine, dont know anything about it. Good people you guys, keep the channel going

Being an Irish Jew living in Dublin , I see the community growing . It’s also interesting to see orthodox , progressive and Jews mixing more . We even have a Chabad centre opening! Yes there is the confusion between Israel and just being Jewish here with some people, but I find being visible and happy to converse and explain helps . Cork Jewish community also growing which is great to see .

Fascinating. I was born in Northern Ireland, but my grandfather was from the Republic of Ireland, and a Protestant (part of that tiny 3%!) I know he, and many Irish protestants felt quite an affinity with the Jewish community, as another minority. Also, my ancestors were French Huguenots, so also fled persecution.
My grandfather married my Northern Irish granny. My dad played bridge for a Jewish bridge club when he was at Queen's university in Belfast. Apparently there was a significant Jewish community in Belfast then; much diminished now. He was the only non-jew in the bridge club, and almost became an honourary Jew! He was an extremely good bridge player in his youth, and they welcomed him.
I grew up in England from age two, when I was a minority again, as pretty much the only Irish family in a west country village. At which point, religious affiliation meant nothing, as the English aren't sectarian at all, and they just saw us as Irish (the NI part made no difference)
So many of us are hybrids in one way or other.
My parents brought us up to have the upmost respect for Jewish people, and indeed all minorities. I respect Jews and Palestinians, and take as I find. Best wishes to you 😊 ☘️
I was born in Belfast. I live in Enniskillen now. I'm a Jew. Our family only found it out around either 10 or 12 years ago.

Hi Daniel! I’m an American Jew. I am a retired ICU Travel Nurse. I worked in Ormond Beach, Florida. I met the Rabbi who was affiliated with the Hospital. Tons of Jews retired in the area including Daytona Beach, too. Large pocket of both Irish and British Jews. They’d get sick, the Rabbi was there to sit with them. By chance I met him, identified myself. He kept saying I looked like a shiksa laughing and hugged me. I realized how badly he must have been treated back home and how excited he was to meet one of his own. What was interesting was that his family had been in Ireland for centuries and hardly anyone knew, they had to hide their identity especially during WW2. I was shocked to tears.
I’m from Florida. Grew up in Miami where anti-semitism was pretty bad. So I do understand. Glad I live in the Tampa Bay Area. We don’t have this craziness here. Very glad you moved to Israel. I don’t speak Hebrew. I would be lost. My second language is Spanish. I don’t think that would help one bit lol!

I grew up in the Rockaway section of Queens, NY. It was mostly Irish & Jewish. It seemed that the Irish who went to parochial school, thru 8th grade were less likely to mix much with Jews. Notwithstanding them Irish & Jews got along great.

I found your channel after looking more into Irish Jewry I’m very happy I did. My mother and her Mothers family by the name of Mcclucas and then Rose were Irish Jews and my mother always told me about them. I have been through many religions but Judaism is always in me and so recently I’ve started learning and practicing, and I would like to one day make a book and maybe a documentary about Irish Jewry and traditions. Yeah lots of it unfortunately! I'm trying to find the right levels on the audio interface and then hoping that OBS and Linux don't screw them up. It's going to take a bit of practice to get right (oddly the video I uploaded previously came out fine!)
ETA: the audio interface I'm using is the Behringer Uphoria UM-2. I know you're an audio guy. If you happen to have any recommendations for an upgrade, I'd love to hear them!

I grew up Irish Catholic in New York State and couldn't wait to convert to Judaism! I was always interested in stories about WW2 and this propelled me to understand the differences between religions.

I hope I'm not intruding I saw your comment 6 months ago I found out who my biological father was he has passed away my last name is Bohan. Just like Bohan the son of Ruben set a boundary for the tribe of Judah and Benjamin in the book of Joshua in the 18th chapter. I'm trying to research see if there is a link between the tribe of Ruben and when they Assyrians came into the North and destroyed most of the 10 tribes of Israel in the North. Some things I see say that some Israelites did travel West like the tribe of Dan that were known for seafaring. The Torah mentions at the tribes when East in to Persia. If there is anything that you might be able to point me in the direction I would greatly greatly be thankful for. May Adonai bless you and shine his countenance upon you for all eternity❤

Seems like a decent lad. I've served with the Irish army in Lebanon and this gave me the opportunity to visit Lebanon, Syria, Israel, residual Palestinian (the WB and Gaza) and Egypt. My experiences in the West Bank raised my conscience and started my involvement in pro-Palestinian activities here in Conamara. That said I'd love to have a pint with Daniel. Unusually my mother was a Christian from Dublin's inner city. She spoke rudimentary Yiddish and relations were excellent between Jews and Christians. Slán agus beannacht.

Me Da ended up doing business with a lot of Dublin Jews in in 1970's. He said they were the fairest people hes ever did business with. They understood that me Da had to do well in order to make the whole eco-system work. They went out of their way to make life as easy as possible for him. He said that the Dublin Jews were more Dublin than himself. Lovely people.

What links Kevin Kline, Harrison Ford, Sean Penn, Ben Stiller, Matthew Broderick, Jennifer Connelly, Ally Sheedy, Kenneth Lonergan, Bill Maher, and the late Michael Landon and Des O'Connor? I think you can probably guess. They're all half Jewish and half Irish. Des O'Connor said he was the only O'Connor ever to have a bar mitzvah. On this theme I will sign off on a classic Jewish joke. Morty goes to Beijing. It's a Saturday and he thinks it'd be nice to go to synagogue. But do they have Jews in China? He's sceptical but after much searching finds a synagogue. Inside, he can't believe his eyes: row upon row of CHINESE JEWS! He takes a seat and sits there in wonder. When the service is over and everyone has left, the rabbi approaches him. He gets right to the point: " What are you doing here?" Morty is very indignant. "I'm a JEW!" The rabbi looks at him in amazement. "You're a JEW? Funny - you no look Jewish". PS. Excellent video.
English teachers especially at the university level are too liberal. I used to be a Christian conservative and I had a clash with an English professor somewhat because I resented that I had to read books titled "Why I am not a Christian" although the biggest reason for the clash was mostly over conservative vs liberal politics and this guy was extremely liberal.
Fascinating video David, really! I’m an American Jew, 3rd and a little bit 4th generation. You mentioned the “two-State” solution. Judea and Samaria are indeed a thorn in our side. There is an interesting book by Israeli-American author and journalist Caroline Glick, called “The Israeli Solution.” It is a very interesting book and Caroline goes into the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the rise of Islamist extremism. She proposes a “One-State Solution” which involves extending Israeli civil law to those areas. She confronts the Israeli fear of being outnumbered by the Arabs by showing the recent census of the West Bank is FALSE! What she proposes then is extending Israeli citizenship to the Palestinian Arabs with the same rights as any Israeli citizen - It’s a good read. Thanks!

Can you read the Torah in Gaelic?
Haha. Funny question. I doubt anybody has ever made such a translation although I'd be intrigued to see it if I were wrong. (In synagogues the Torah is usually read in its original Hebrew).
I'm in a weird situation, I went through all the Catholic sacraments but my Mam's from a reformed Jewish family. Its wild because I get told all the time I look Jewish - people see it.
You are Jewish Judaism runs thru the mother so your Jewish if ur moms Jewish or you convert you still have the Jewish souls and spark in you that's what they see shouldn't denie it

Its a petty we don't have more religious facilaties even if they're not used regulary.
Being strongly anti-zioinist i think we should encorage the Irish jewish community to return to thier actual homeland & do that through stamping out anti-semitisim & establishing religious facilaties
I came across your video I am a nurse in memory care unit so elderly. We had an Irish lunch for st Patrick’s day. I have 2 Jewish women who both born in German earlier than 1935. Both women refused to eat visibly irritated one lady she will eat all day long. I had to look up what the dislike for the Irish was about. It is deep dislike these women don’t know who I am and see them 5 days a week.
American here was family came from Ireland and England after ww2 they are Catholic I converted to Judaism and I get questions as well and Irish American Jew lol good to see a brother
Is it hard to keep kosher in Ireland?
There's a kosher section in a supermarket in Dublin. The Rabbinate maintains a list of kosher products which can be found generally. But that's pretty much it. Compared to most thriving Jewish communities where you have fresh kosher meat, kosher-certified restaurants etc ... it's very limited (and in one city ... I personally wouldn't want my kids to grow up Jewish in Ireland for that reason alone but for people who are less observant it's obviously less of a dealbreaker).

I believe most McDonald's in Israel would be kosher am I correct? You are right though a lot of Jews ain't bothered about the kosher laws too much
@@tarotbyamber7233 McDonalds exists in Israel via the usual mechanism (namely its franchise network). But no, not all branches are certified kosher.

Daniel, it's not by acident that you moved to the country of your origin, I believe that Hashem has a purpose for you in Israel beside having a family and earning money. Enjoyed it very much to hear from you and I well understand that you don't like to speak much about Ireland, the country that you left. This is not the feeling of Judaism, if you understand what I mean. I am a mesianic believer with jewish roots myself and I'll move with my husband to Israel, too, in a couple of years, but first we'll have to finish our ministry in Germany , in Berlin. Hi Daniel, Thank you! Actually I am from Frankfurt, still leaving there, but concerning jewish life there's not much left after WW2 beside one Jewish Community and Synagoge, as you might have discovered when visiting. It's really a shame if you consider before the war it was the second largest German Jewish community. After the war it became Berlin, and this is the main reason I'm going to live there.
I'm seeking Jewish friends. Brothers really. I teach Spanish, and offer my skill and resources for FREE to Jewish brothers. A further connection might be Ireland and Spain where I will live after 2027.

I am from Belfast Northern Ireland the Protestant/ Unionist people support Israel 🇮🇱 or most off them do there is a lot off Israeli flag 🇮🇱 flying in Belfast.

Antisemitism is growing world wide and in Europe in particular. We can see in in France and England where in comes from the common people, but in Ireland it comes from the governmential institutes especially in relation to Israel - the only Jewish state.
Ireland criticised Russia for invading Ukraine same as it criticises Israel for over-bombing Gaza. Nothing to do with religion. Stop playing the victim card.

It is worth exploring why Ireland is intensely anti-Israel.
I'd include several factors:
1. The strain of Catholicism in Ireland is historically anti-Semitic.
That's odd, as there were never enough Jews in Ireland to form a Minyan.
This was also the case with Irish in the USA in the 1800s and into the WWII era.
Its the old Middle Ages tropes handed down the generations.
On a daily basis, there were Irish gangs running down Jews in NYC and Boston.
Other Catholic ethnicities, namely, Polish, also exhibited a Catholic-based bigotry.
Yet there were Catholic nationalities, such as Italians, that were generally philo-Semitic.
This is consistent, because Italy was never especially anti-Jewish.
I say "was", because in the Post WWII era in the USA,
Irish-Americans have moved mostly into the pro-Jewish and pro-Israel column.
2. Irish Catholics in Ireland are overwhelmingly Left Wing.
And to the International Left, Israel is a Colonial pariah.
Religiously, Irish are ostensibly social Conservatives (but not really),
though economically and politically Left Wing.
Perhaps Daniel could explain why.
I'll take a crack at this.
Nations subscribe to an ideology that they think addresses the challenges they face.
We saw this in Germany during the interwar years.
Many Germans who were not anti-Jewish supported Nazism because the Nazis
offered a path out of the grotesque Reparations imposed by France at Versailles.
the dissolute culture of the Wiemar Republic, a restoration of National Pride,
and return of lands that were arguably unfairly torn from Germany
by you guessed it, the French.
In Russia, the Bolsheviks, a minority of a minority, won the support of the
Russian people, most of whom were not Bolsheviks,
because the Bolsheviks offered a path out of serfdom and a rigid class-based society.
I am not putting the Irish on the level of Nazis or Bolsheviks.
But after centuries of oppression, starvation, and expropriation by England,
the Left seemed like a good train to hop on.
So it is the dogma of the Left that goes unquestioned.
3. Irish see Scots-Irish Protestants as having no legitimate claim to live in Ireland.
They see a parallel circumstance in The Holy Land.
They do not see 3,000 years of continued Jewish presence,
but think history started in 1948, because it supports their own narrative.
4. Some Irish think Israel is to blame for the Palestinian issue.
They may not be aware Palestinians never had an independent state,
and rejected offers of statehood in 1936, 1948, 1967, 2000, and 2008.
This is a case of misinformation supplied by a biased media and educational complex.
The second point went over my head but... Otherwise I agree. Although I'm not sure whether distinguishing antisemitism on the basis of whether there is a sizeable Jewish population in a place gets us very far. For me, it just distinguishes whether the antisemitism is based upon what racists see as legitimate reasons from personal encounters with Jews or prejudices learned from the media.
Re: 1948 that's a huge point. I may have recounted that I used to have an English teacher, in high school, who regularly opened his class with highly selective and factually woeful diatribes against Israel and the Jews. The narrative being presented to (still pretty malleable) students was that in '48 this evil group called "the Jews" stormed into a country formerly called Palestine and took their land.
If you choose to deny essentially all of Jewish history and our connection to the land then.... Yes, it's rather easy to cast us as the cruel villain!

Thank you for your comments. you answered a question I have been asklng for some time. As a pro Jewish / Israel, of Irish descent, I lived and went to school for six months in Ireland and visite relatives many, many times and still do. I have not once, heard a single word of anti-Jewish sentiment. Jews left Ireland for the same reason as the non-Jewish community, namely, economics and opportunity, as did my parents. It is to me, so sad to learn of Ireland's anti-Israel stance. So mis-guided and un-necessary.
