  • Join us as we learn about the Jewish heritage and history of Dublin, Ireland with local guide Peter White. Our virtual adventure, through the eyes of Peter's grandfather Samuel, takes us through the soul of the city to the heart of 'Little Jerusalem' - an area in which thousands of Jews made their home after fleeing from the pogroms of Russia (an in our guide's case, Lithuania). Born and bred in Dublin, Peter has been a guide for over 10 years country wide but has a particular love of sharing the rich Jewish heritage of Dublin.

Being from Dublin, one of my favourite teachers was Jewish. She gave me a love of History and English back in the eighties. As regards Peter's accent, it is a Dublin accent and I'd place it as slightly upper middle class.
As I write this it's beautiful here in Ireland, a fresh sunny day. So, come on over...

I am a Jewish convert of Irish decent living in the US. My Rabbi used to think it funny that I would be an Irish Jew. Soon I'll be visiting Dublin and appreciate this tour. Thank you

Joyce gave Leopold and his Wife Molly a big part in his masterpiece, both Jews, in integral part of Joyce's Dublin. Thank you.

@@_aworldthatspoke950 It gets even stranger than that: In her soliloquy at the end, it becomes clear that she is actually Jewish, but unusual for Europe, Sephardic ("Juanita Laredo" is her mother's name). There's even more complexity here, but Ira B. Nadel has a wonderful book on this so I won't bore you. That Joyce went to the most filigree aspects of Jewish identity throughout all 3 of his books boggles my mind.

Joyce based the charcter. Leopold Bloom on Professor Virag from Trieste university in Switzerland. Virag was jewish from sombaty Hungary. Sounds like somebody. Virag in Humgarian means bloom or flower..
Theres a statue of Joyce in Sambathy just like on Talbot street.

Very interesting thank you Peter. We should never forget the attrocities the Russian State has committed and continues to inflict on its own and neighbouring populations. Slava Ukrayini 🇺🇦

My mother as a teenager worked alongside a number Jewish Seamstresses in a factory close to the city center in the sixties and always had good things to say about them. An American Rabbi once told me that It was likely that my great great grandparents had come from Lithuania to Ireland and changed their name to Sharpe. All I know is my Great Grandfather living in Stamullen in Co. Meath and died in 1918 as a registered Anglican although no one remembers his origin or where he came from before his arrival in Co. Meath. My daughter and I light the Menorah each year but we aren't Jewish either. I've always meant to head to the Museum in Dublin but its always been closed on the days I've been in Dublin. I wonder if Mr. White knows anything about the former Jewish area of Drogheda Co. Louth particularly Dyer Street? Supposedly there was a thriving community in Drogheda up until the 1930's that dated back to Medieval times. I think there is a six foot wooden sign I saw in the National Museum from the Dyer Street from the Jewish community I saw in the 1990's.

Do you reckon the factory was in the Liberties? Dorene was founded and operated by the Vard family.

I often wonder about their outsized place in our nation's formation. It's very strange. All that Gaelic blood shed. Provisions specifically made for them. Strange.
