I was born and raised into a Catholic family in Belfast. I left in 1968 to work in England after graduating from QUB. I was never aware of antisemitism at that time, only much later. I had a Saturday job in a Jewish owned men’s clothing shop in Belfast when I was about 14 or 15. Lovely man. My father and I played Irish music and we played many times at functions in the Jewish Centre on the Antrim Road. At grammar school I recall there was one Jew and also one English lad but it was the latter who was the butt of anti British comments. My connection with Jews developed through business - one of my suppliers was an Auschwitz survivor and my knowledge of Jewish history better informed after a visit to Yad Vashem shortly after the Yom Kippur war. Although no longer living there I think anti Israel and antisemitism really began to manifest itself in Ireland after the six day war. This is also evidenced by the IRA having an association with the PLO and Gadaffi in Libya. I also believe it is very much based on a conflation of the British role in the establishment of Israel and Irelands history with British colonialism. I acknowledge the purpose of your video is not specifically political but I would be interested to hear why you think the anti Israel sentiment is so prevalent in Ireland. Am Yisrael Chai. 🇮🇱

Having an Irish mother growing up in Britain educated me in being othered and so my sympathy is with all minorities. I worked with Jews in Dublin and abroad, usually found them good humoured and decent (which is how most irish people make their assessments, indeed, most working people). However, I strongly disagree that Irish people are antisemitic or that they hate Isreal. I don’t believe there is any bad will towards Jews or towards Israelis. However, there is extreme disgust at the Israeli Government’s policy of killing innocent Palestiniens. We feel the same disgust towards Hamas.
