Reviewing Rick Stein's EXPENSIVE FISH AND CHIPS in PADSTOW - ABSOLUTE RIP OFF!

  • I'm finally in Cornwall and in particular, Padstow. I've been told many times not to go to Stein's Fish and Chips due to it's lack of quality and overpriced nature, however I thought I'd see what the fuss is all about in today's review and as you can see by the title, this was a very unhappy review.

I think ALL of us should really think about how we support these celebrity chefs and realise how good a living they are having off of our money. It's time to totally ignore them and support good HONEST local businesses only.

I live in West Cornwall. When Stein opened his restaurant in Porthleven he had flyers delivered to all the homes in the wider area offering special off-season prices for local residents. One lunchtime special offer for us low-paid locals was ‘A mackerel, simply grilled’. Any fishing harbour in Cornwall has fresh mackerel available on the quayside for less than 50p each.
How much was Stein asking locals for ‘A mackerel, simply grilled’ at his special ‘Off-season’ prices ? £25. For a 50p mackerel that we could ‘Simply grill’ at home.
We stayed away in droves of course, and now Stein has sold off the restaurant . Good riddance to a deeply unpopular character.

We chanced by a small cafe opposite the Annes Pasty Shop on the stormy Monday as shelter from the rain with our two soaking dogs and I had the most amazing bowl of soup in there. Home made & delicious. It was packed all the time we sat in there so its clearly well known for good food. Its the little places that seem to excel these days.

I actually think he is a very good cook but that's a moot point, this food has nothing to do with him, his son runs the business and they are simply making shoddy fish and chips with his name on it. He needs to sort it out and tell his son and the staff to get their acts together. I've now seen a few reviews of this rubbish - nobody likes it or thinks it's acceptable. Frankly you'd be better off buying frozen Youngs or Birds Eye and cooking it in your oven than wasting your money - it would be healthier too, without all that grease.

When I lived in West Cornwall, I wanted to take my new husband there for a treat. I tried to book by phone, but was told they only had a table at 10.30pm in the foreseeable future. Disappointed, nevertheless, I booked and drove across Cornwall (I was living in Falmouth). When we arrived, we had to wait 20 minutes as "the table wasn't available yet". When we sat down, we were quickly told not to take more than an hour (rich, I thought). We ordered drinks and food. I have to say, the menu was fairly disappointing - as was the food. We left in just over the hour (with an annoyed look from our waitress). The bill arrived, over 175!! We got into the car and drove home. I'm pleased to hear that the restaurant has closed!

I wouldn't mind if Rick Stein was affecting as a Michelin starred chef but his travel series were always about hearty, simple, affordable food with local ingredients. Fish in Cornwall ought to be as abundant as any food comes. It's just hoiked out of the water there and then. Rick Stein was filming for his TV series on Cornwall a few years ago here in Newlyn and he and the film crew had a break and went to a local pub. They sat in the beer garden with their drinks and proceeded to take out their packed lunches and eat them then and there. One of the staff asked if they could eat it elsewhere and Stein commented that they had bought the drinks in the pub and so they were entitled to stay to drink them and also eat their own food!!! Some locals sitting nearby heard this and told him they also thought he should leave, but he didn't. Arrogant.

I followed the career of Rick Stein from his early days as celebrity chef. At the time, I was a chef myself and living in Australia (like him) and I could not really understand what the fuss was all about. His recipes were always pinched from somebody else and they all had something in common: they were easy to cook.
His kitchen demeanour on his TV series showed clearly that he was not a trained chef. He was a hack who stumbled into a good thing and who was very lucky to have a wife (a publicist) who knew how he should be promoted. He would have never succeeded in any other area of cooking except seafood, which usually tastes great no matter what you do to it (within reason as we saw in this video).
Unlike all the other trained British chefs like Floydf, Ramsay, Blumenthal, Oliver and Lawson, Stein stood apart as not belonging to the illustrious list. Gary, you have visited the restaurants of several British TV personalities and none of them have allowed their name to be tarnished by a shonky operation. Rick Stein is the only one and the best thing people can do is vote with their feet and go elsewhere. Even as a tourist trap, his fish and chips shop was below par. If I were you, I would send his shop a link to your video and ask for comments. You could then make a follow-up video.

My wife bought one of each and they were absolutely dreadful, however the price wasn’t extortionate. I live in Padstow. And i worked in Steins Production unit in the industrial estate (Trecerus) just outside Padstow for almost a year.
I wouldn't touch those chips if you paid me, and Steins used to pay me to cut their chips!
The potatoes were peeled by machine, cut by machine and then soaked in a bath of preservatives!
Then they are bagged up in 5kg bags and refrigerated for up to 7 days depending on how busy the restaurants are.
ALL Steins restaurants use the same chips (yes even the seafood restaurant!)
I used to do the morning bake for the patiserie too.
All the pastries were bought in bulk, frozen from a generic french supplier, then baked and decorated for sale in the patiserie.
Biggest scam i saw was the olive oil!
Steins would buy a pallet of spanish olive oil in 5litre bottles then decant it via a metal seive into small 250ml bottles with a Steins label on and sold for a stupid price!
Rick doesn't really run Steins anymore, its run by a bunch of scamming management goons.
Half of the locals have at some stage worked for Steins and would never work for,buy or eat at Any of steins produce as they know how below average it is. This is also why they are struggling to find staff. They miss treat their staff, bullying is rife and pay is garbage unless you are top management with grubby fingers in the money pot!
Oh and Steins Pasty's are locally renown to be the worst pasty's around after the Ginsters petrol station junk FYI .

This just sums up so many businesses in the UK now.
Minimum outlay for maximum returns and no care for what the customer thinks.
It’s not just the hospitality sector, it’s creeping in everywhere.

      THIS
I'm a chef and live and work in York city center
I've been a chef all my life and believe me how things have changed..
when I first started out I worked In a few places and it was always about the passion and creativity now it's a totally different game even the Chefs in a lot of these places will agree with you but they have no choice what they can give the customer now.. the business owners all now tell the chefs what they are allowed to cook and how to cook it and how big or small the portions have to be
you now have front of house staff members who haven't even finished college who are placed in charge of kitchens full of chefs who trained to be chefs... it's a miserable industry to be in now theres no more passion in it it's just like being a robot... every reason chefs became chefs has been taken away by greedy business owners who want to spend the absolute minimum on shit ingredients and make you cook it in the most boring and bland ways to save money its depressing af lol yet they are charging top price for it....let me tell you as a chef sometimes I'm happy I'm in the kitchen so the customers cant see me for fear of being judged for sub standard food at high end prices its embarrassing and definitely not worth the money customers are paying in a lot of cases
Also what a lot of people dont realise is that now for things like sauces and batter and anything that's used on multiple dishes we have to use vegan versions of certain ingredients for example chips used to be cooked in beef dripping etc but because of how veganism and other dietary requirements have become more and more widespread or dare I say popular a lot of the ingredients that make things stand out are not used anymore to cater for the people that cant or wont eat those things which has also contributed to the huge decline in quality

I visit padstow probably once a year as it’s a nice harbour and walk so I’ve often see the takeaways people get from the chip shop half eaten and thrown away. Your experience sadly echos what I’ve overheard from other customers.
