The general thinking is posh rich folks aren't there to eat they are there to talk mingle so 9 chips is adequate can't be gorging into food the price tag is for the ambience service etc hope this clears.
I'm not a native of Yorkshire, but I freely admit that I've had the best fish and chips in my life in the few times I've visited there. I still salivate over a memory of a visit to Holmfirth.
What do you expect? Golden rule: NEVER, EVER go to any restaurant or cafe with a celebrity chef's name attached. Even before you walk in the door you are going to be ripped off. Add the Harrods name and you are going to be double ripped off. Go to a humble chippy where you'll not only get better portions at a third of the price but it'll probably taste better too.
Disagree. Went to Kerridge's restaurants in Bourne End a few times about 18-24 months ago and every time it was amazing. Fairly expensive, though not ridiculous, but well worth it. The real problem here is that it's Harrods. It's been a tourist trap for decades. Everyone in London knows to avoid it like an Angus Steakhouse.
@@chris1london do you cook yourself? A bag of 2.5 kg potatoes costs £1.15 at ALdi... and a bag of fish fillets costs £2.50.... that would produce 4 large fish n chips portions at least for 90p each. Only empty headed suckers go these restaurants...
I've been to one of Gordon Ramsay's restaurants and it was quite disappointing. Food was a bit bland and nothing stood out. Just slightly fancy presentation and steep prices.
I agree i used to work in catering and we would often laugh about the fact that celebrity chefs who have loads of restaurants cannot be spending any meaningful time in all the restaurants its basically impossible quite often the quality is also laughable
I can't believe people pay this price just because he is Tom kerridge even dick turpin had the decency to wear a mask ,well done Gary for giving a honest review
Why would any British person go there to eat fish, and chips?I know this is your job Gary,I’m not talking about you,I think this sort of meal is for tourists, and not English ones, there is nothing a chef can do to elevate a piece of battered fish, and some chips to make it worth $45 dollars.I worked in a top fish restaurant for over 21 years, and you can elevate a lot of fish dishes, but not anything as simple as F&C.Anyway just my opinion.
Kerridge is one of these chefs who’s let success go to his head. I’m not surprised it was lousy. He’s reducing portion size in all his places and pushing up prices. Thanks for confirming he’s doing the same in central London. Well done again Gary. Hope the bank manager doesn’t call you re this one!
Nice one Gary! BTW I'd love see your take on a Blacklock Sunday roast. I know you're keen on your beef! Make sure you go on a Sunday though!😊@@GaryEats
Maybe you'll go back to Blacklock for the Sunday Roast? The Soho or Shoreditch one perhaps? I know you may say 'never go back'! enjoy your weekend mate@@GaryEats
Thanks for a great review Gary. I now steer well clear of paying silly money for celebrity endorsed eateries, as they are all well-disguised scams. Another recent rip-off for me was afternoon tea at Kensington Palace Pavilion. Pot of tea, a few basic sandwich quarters and shop bought cakes for £46 per person plus 12.5% service! And when we asked for another pot of tea it came back like dish water. They'd simply poured hot water over the same leaves used for the first pot! Never again.
All places to eat are only as good as the people who work there who are often paid peanuts while the celeb. chef the place is named after gets megabucks in naming payment.
One thing I've noticed is that you always give waiting staff due credit. Even when you are disappointed with the food/pricing, you usually acknowledge the friendliness of the staff. As someone who has worked front of house for a long time, it's very nice to see someone being sympathetic towards writing staff and not dismissing them even when the rest of the experience has been subpar.
Hello Alex, I myself have worked front of house and it’s not easy as you know perfectly well some customers are friendly and nice others unfortunately are not. My respect for all staff working in the catering industry is so high and I really appreciate the job they do.
I thought it was bad enough when one of the Irish pubs here in Bucharest (Romania) started charging 55 lei (€11 / US$12) for 3-4 small pieces of fish and a modest basket of chips. But Kerridge's has taken to a whole new level of hustling....!)
@@danielvanr.8681 It's a "hustle" only if £37 is eye-watering to you. The market that Harrod's targets don't need to concern themselves with price. A Rolex Submariner @ £20,000 or a Casio @ £20... Both tell the time - both are accurate - both are waterproof to 100m... Those who don't need to worry about price can choose either the Rolex, or the Casio, or anything in-between. For us poor folk, even the Casio may seem expensive.
The government milks the system. But with this, if people are fooled easily, so be it as it's basically a fish and potato served in slices. At my local I pay a fiver 😆
A fool and their money are easily parted, The food snobbery in this country is laughable! Thank you for showing the absurd cost of a childs portion of food.
ive found that most fish and chips shops ive had all over the country is quite awful, god knows what visitors to our country think of the crap. and that tom kerridges fish and chips looks thin and awful
@jayjanuary4754 That is your personal opinion, Im a shepherd and i work hard and eat well. If you dont burn off energy by say driving a desk you won't. Gluttony not with that plate of food but thats just my opinion.
I had to comment on this because I think you hit the nail on the head. They often label themselves ‘exclusive’. That’s from the verb ‘to exclude’ meaning to keep out. So the high prices are to exclude the poor. They could hardly put up a sign saying ‘No ordinary people allowed’ So they do it by charging so much that ordinary people are in practice excluded. So as you say, they pay for the pleasure of dining with their own kind!!
I love how even when you're giving a negative review you are fair, to the point, you don't exaggerate your complaints for dramatic effect, and still put together a review entirely within the calm, grounded style
Used to be a great fish and chip shop in Ayr it was called Jim Jacks best fish and chips ever .. much better than this pathetic effort .. and about 10 quid cheaper at least
Its a thing, unfortunately, my heart always sinks when they serve your chips in one of those miniature galvanised buckets. I wonder who thought of that stupid idea.
holy sh!t gary!!! i thought rick stein was a tight arse with his portions and price . a cup of 9 chips , absolutley insane . my wallet is crying just watching this. thats almost 90.00$ new zealand for 9 chips and a fish with sauces. im glad your showing these places and the fish and chips cause i would have made the mistake of thinking we would get a great deal for that price when we come visit the uk
fellow kiwi here I went to Harrods years ago but I did not dare eat or buy anything there being on my travel budget, it is worth a visit out of curiosity as you will see some expensive and unique items in store but you can find much better places to eat fish and chips in London lol The old pubs are the way to go, cheaper and larger portions, this is a joke.
The last time I bought fish and chips I paid £30 for 3 portions of cod and chips and each piece of cod was far bigger than that piece of haddock and let's just say there were more than 9 chips on each plate. The fact that people are prepared to pay £37 for a plate of mediocre food speaks volumes. Great review and I admire the way you were quite fair in your criticism. I'm not sure I would have been.
we have a fish and chip van in our area and for £10.50 you get a fresh piece of fish which was twice the size of Harrods, mushy peas, freshly made tartare sauce, and at least 300g of chunky fresh chips. It tastes wonderful and the van is used by about 200 people in the area. London prices are a rip off and you are paying for the service, name and kudos.
I'm an Aussie in Australia (but lived in the East Midlands for nearly 15yrs) I can buy 3 battered cod with chips and a serve of calamari for $30 at my local chippie in SE Qld. We never can finish off all the chips, too many..! And it's delicious...
Under no circumstances would I go there to eat fish and chips, and after watching this video I don't think a lot of other people will either. Thank you for an honest assessment.
All of a sudden I'm feeling better about the fish finger sandwich I'm going to have for lunch. I made the bread myself this morning and I'm going to use the last of the chilli butter I made last week with cream rescued from Olio. I'm having a potato left over from yesterday fried up with a pepper and onion to go with it. Gary, today I'll sit down to my humble meal and be able to say that it's better than what I'd get at Harrods 😊 thank you, you've made my day
A very fair review Gary. Can’t believe the price for what you were served. £6 for a buttered roll also?!? I wouldn’t go there even as a special treat. Great review Sir, keep it up. All the best to you and yours.
I really enjoy your candid food reviews; this one is particularly good. An honest, no nonsense appraisal here. As soon as i saw those chips presented like that i was stunned! That's a staggeringly absurd price.
£37 for 9 chips, a large fish finger and a lemon thing (in a pair of tights!!!) WOW ! And I bet the majority of people that go there are saying 'its so amazing - ' food snobbery all the way
@@njwtube Nor should the portion be so stingy that you can complain to the waitress, hey I'm a chip down from yesterday's and that is a reduction of 11%.
That's relatively cheep compared with Tom's Sunday lunch priced at £175 per person at his Marlow Hand and Flowers restaurant. I visited Harrods last Monday and saw the queue for Kerridge's fish and chips which reminded me of the old saying "a fool and his money are easily parted".
If people are daft enough to go into these places and pay redicolous money for fish and chips i paid fifteen pounds fifty for horrable pie and skimpy bit mash and small tea in manchester off oldham street i told the staff complete rip off pie was horrable
The thing I love most about this channel is it gives a new level of accountability these restaurants have never really had. I can’t think of any other time these restaurants would have had reviews with half a million views, so they’ve been charging whatever they’ve wanted too. I think if this continues they might start to change their behaviour. Great channel, I’ve been binge watching with my meals 😂
Until very recently, I lived in a small island in the Outer Hebrides who's main source of income was in fishing. I am appalled at the prices that people are being for charged for fish and seafood in these high end restaurants! I also wonder what their profit margin is, as I know this money does not directly go to any of the local fishermen.
Their profit for each meal sold of that fish & chips is probably above 25£ per meal, but it depends on many factors, including renting such facilities in London is very expensive, so we can just make a guess here.
I'd have gone crazy if I was given 9 chips (even in Harrods) ! Once again (unlike many other reviewers) you have no fear marking down showing why this Channel is the very best.
Here's the thing - as an Aussie, we pretty much need to double the price in pounds (after exchange rates, taxes, fees etc) to get the price of something in Aussie dollars. That means that you've just eaten a $74 piece of fish, with three sauces, and 9 chips. Holy hell!!
Just recently found your channel Gary and I am loving your honest , genuine reviews! You’re such a nice guy that when you’re disappointed, my reaction is “how could they do that to poor Gary!” 😂
Scandalous pricing and ridiculous portion size,I would of been fuming at only getting 9 chips, the haddock seemed rather thin and skimpy,as for the sauces……nothing much to shout about, thanks for showing us what we are not missing out on 👍
@@marcinski5201 harrods is for everyone as you can find anything at reasonable prices for that area it's about narcissistic celebrity chefs overpricing 9 chips and a slither of fish 😂
Add over to Mr Kerridge for his explanation.......Tom?, Tom?. Just because you went on a huge diet a fews years back which probably involved Sparrow sized portions, it doesn't mean you should subject your customers to the same treatment .
I‘m very new to the channel, just saw a couple of your Fish&Chips tests, but I really have to admit I love your honest down to Earth Reviews, no sponsored nonesense just a man saying his own opinion and pays tribute to good service staff, I appreciate your videos Sir
If Tom Kerridge opened in the West Midlands serving the same as you had and charged that amount for it, he would be ran out of town as a grifter. I think it is obscene that anyone would have to pay that much for that amount of food anywhere. Some family’s are having to eat for a week for £40.
First time I've ever seen you and your channel (I'm from London originally) - in my honest opinion, Harrods is for tourists and rich locals. Fish and Chips in Harrods is to service those tourists and local rich people who don't/won't go anywhere near a proper fish and chip shop. Mostly, I'd say, you paid for that art deco ambiance and experience. Now, I'll go watch your other fish and chip review :) Nice work!
Great review Gary. I seen some other post on social media about this.I also seen TK response to the criticism and attempts to justify the cost. He made it sound like some poor divil was getting up at the crack of dawn to go to the fields to dig and hand pick potatoes which were then handed over to a culinary sculptor to peel and cut with precision to fit into the little cup.
When I lived in the UK, there was an extremely popular Chinese chippie near us that, even though they had five people serving, as well as the kitchen staff, always had people queuing. Why? Always gigantic and thick pieces of fish and far too many chips to finish. But it was always fried to perfection. At the time, about six years ago, it cost about £5-50. Mind you, it didn't have tasteless sauces and a nice piece of lemon! I love to see these 'fancy' places being shown for what they are. Cheers, mate.
@@S.Trades I would still expect to be served a very nice meal for that price, otherwise I certainly wouldn't go back again. Ever. Also, all chippies have to pay staff. The one I was talking about had a total of eight staff, plus their own overheads. It's just a racket, because of the name.
Tom's great answer to most businesses is just increase the prices.£6 £7 £8 £9 £10 a pint .Well once all the customers have gone who does he think will pay these prices.Perfect example of how to finish a business off .
Hmmm... you don't seem to understand how market sectoring works. Harrods has many decades strategic intent of attracting well-heeled customers. They intentionally target A++ income groups and don't care about (or want) the riff-raff - ie: you and me. Look at the luxury goods market for another example: A Louis Vuitton handbag can cost £25,000 - and it's "just a handbag". People who casually buy Vuitton handbags are totally unconcerned with its price - they are in the market sector that Vuitton is absolutely focused on targeting. While Tom's videos are interesting and appeal to us paupers, to knowingly go into a venue which you clearly can't afford to patronise, then criticise it, is disingenuous.
@@brunosmith6925 True story, mate. These people live in an income bracket that mortal plebs like us will never even get close.... £25,000 is €28,500, roughly. I'd have to work 2,370 hrs to make that. Or, on average, 6.5 hrs every day of the week for a year. Huuuh.......
@@danielvanr.8681 I was earning less than £25k ten years ago. So I upped my skills (through free tutorials on the internet), learned computer programming and ecommerce, started my own ercommerce business in 2013 - and now make over £25k a month. If a person believes they are only worth £2k a month, then that's what they strive for. I changed my thinking, knowing that (with some hard work and commitment to learning) I could be worth 10 times that. However... Spending £35 on fish n chips is dumb... come to think of it, spending even £3.50 on that crap is just as dumb.
It doesn’t even look like an expensive plate of food…I know that isn’t easy to do with fish and chips, but that fish just looked like something you’d buy in a packet from the supermarket
Just had fish & chips for Sunday lunch at my local Pub in the township of Dayboro Queensland Australia for one-quarter the price and by the looks of it 4 times the quality and value of what you were served up. Great recommendation when a piece of lemon is the highlight of the "meal"! Would love to have enough money to order the rubbish you were served and send it back to the kitchen as being a load of crap!
I think you nailed it when you said you dont mind paying premium price for a premium meal/experience. Im the same, but its F&C and there is only so much you can do i think. That said, for £37 id want it to be the best id ever had. You have spared the rest of us wasting our hard earned in that place. Thanks Gary.
@@michaeljoyce6834so it’s okay to rip off tourists with ridiculous prices like this? Also if you didn’t like his review then why don’t you take your own advice and simply jog on.
Absolutely, there's the local chippy then there's eating out somewhere posh. It's going to cost more but you expect more ... not quantity ... but taste, quality, and a real experience. Not ASDA fish n chips 😂😂😂
I once went to Jamie Oliver’s restaurant in Manchester. It was called 15. I ordered lobster with roasted veg. The portion was absolutely ridiculous! I still annoyed that I don’t think I got the full lobster along with the half a potato and one whole carrot. If I remember rightly, it came to £84! Just the main- no starter or dessert. Suffice to say, I’ve never been to a famous chefs restaurant since. Moral of the story is support your local family run chippys! Atleast you get your moneys worth. Good vid. New sub.
This is an example of how some use the ‘prices have gone up’ excuse to charge extortionate prices for what is a working man’s meal. You paid for the up keep of the grandeur surroundings, the fish and chips were £15 at most and £22 to cover the overheads. I posted this to Tom and Harrods on Twitter, I don’t expect any reply soon.. Well done for enlightening us Gary 👍
I think you might be missing the context: This is Harrods. I can't imagine people going there with the sole intention of just eating. I would also argue that this is more the lowest common food for picky people that still want to show how posh they are. The "look what I can afford but anything above mash and gravy is too exotic" sort. Because you are right in that you get the best in a chippy on the coast. But that isn't exactly rocket science and wouldn't fill a YT channel.
Harrods are probably charging tom kerridge millions a year to have a restaurant in there so thats why the inflated prices are there, but still, £37 for fish & chips is just stupid & pretentious
Would be interesting to know how many chip shops use frozen fish or delivered fresh that day and if there is any taste difference. Two local chip shops in my town, would swear one uses frozen as the taste is bland and portion size tiny. Fish fell apart and turned to mush.
Great minds think alike £37 quid where do I get the application to remortgage sorry I forgot interest rates at 6% can’t even get a mortgage no wonder Gary was cheesed off lol 😂
I gotta say, i'm speechless!!! One second into looking at that menu and i'm like "£6.50 for a buttered bread roll", "£8.50 for a bit of lettuce and salad cream". I know London's supposed to be expensive but that's disgusting!! And i cannot believe you could count the number of chips on your hands and still have a digit left over!! Don't ever go to a restaurant for fish and chips, the best ones are always from a proper chippy and you get your money's worth!! I watched a video of someone reviewing fish and chips in a place called Murgatroyds which is in Leeds and they had an absolutely massive fish with large chips and sauces for only £17, maybe you should go there!! This is absolutely outrageous!!!!
You are a trooper , getting yourself rinsed so we don't have to, your videos are like the public information films we had in the 1970s , those 9 chips equates to 1 potato the most common plentiful vegetable on earth, around here in North Norfolk you can buy 25kilos of potatoes for less than a tenner , the soles on my worn out slippers reminded me of that fish , this is criminal activity. Thanks for another astonishing video 😮.
Poor Gary, he looked so crestfallen after settling up the bill. 😢 Good food is one of the few treats we get in life, and when it goes wrong, it can feel as though we've been cheated. ☹️
In the mid 70s, our local chips shop in Mildenhall gave you a huge slab of cod and a big mound of chips for 99p. (The pound was $2.70 at the time.) All wrapped up in newspaper. As servicemen, we would recruit one of the few guys who had a car to do a run. Their fryers ran nonstop. Still the best I've ever had.
The worst part is that after paying £37 ninety minutes later you will still be hungry! It seems that more and more shady restaurants are popping up serving these mini tasteless meals to people.
Yes, it's all about making the plates look good for photos and nothing else, how on earth can a restaurant serve nine chips with fish and chips and charge £37 ? It's obviously just there to rip off tourists , no local person will willingly pay that price for fish and chips with nine chips.
The main reason why the calorie intake is so high is mainly due to the fatty oil and breading used for the fish. Last time I checked consuming fried oily bread is not proper fuel for your body. Much is turns to waste, yes? Now if your full after eating a 4 oz. piece of seafood skinny fish. You must be very thin.
Agreed. He was absolutely accurate. You may not find " old money" folks dining in such places,as they know the value of pretty much everything and though I may have frequented the store few times with British friend, any purchase was of quality trusted brands and priced accordingly. I love the odd treat of decent fish n chips with mushy peas ( despite not being British!!) I would not pay that much for a well disguised piece of haddock! Rest of meal doesn't even count. Little bowls of bulk bought processed liquids. Nine chips? I don't have a large appetite but someone has bravado to put that plate in front of a grown man! Quite right in your assessment. In fact, it didn't look like you were enjoying it at all. I bet viewers were getting annoyed along with you!!😮
That is a ridiculous price, and I agree with what you have said regarding quality/quantity, etc. £6 for the roll and butter! No way, it should have been free/gratuit!
Maybe if the roll was freshy baked on premesis (from scratch with a long cold ferment) and the butter was hand churned from milk they specially selected from the farms themselves and the cows receive daily spa treatment xD
I've been fascinated by your channel and open, honest reviews, Gaz. It's awesome to learn of the good and bad for us when travelling. Being from Perth Australia, you've reviewed some places that we'll definitely want to try when in London. All the best, mate. Keep holding those pubs and restaurants to account, mate. 👍🇦🇺
Well done Gary. A very fair review in my opinion. I don't mind paying top dollar for great food. I do resent paying over the odds for food that promises a lot but fails to deliver. I still think that you can't beat fish and chips from a proper chippy. They are the experts.
It’s a bit of a giveaway when he does adverts for a rip off supermarket? 🥴😉🤣 talk about pulling the rug from under your own feet. They must have paid him a substantial amount 😢

Agreed totally with your 3/10 score that's what I scored it. The portion size was ridiculous 9 chips and a fish finger is a joke. Another money maker for Kerridge, wonder what he'd have scored that?. I got a large fish and chips from my local fish shop the other day £9.50, was absolutely gorgeous and I just say managed to finish it all it was that big. Enjoy watching your appraisals, keep up the great work mate.
Mini fish and chips and pot of curry is £5 at our local chip shop. The fish is a fair size, you get plenty chips and the curry is the best I've tasted and they cook fresh chips every 20 minutes.
I went to a fish restaurant in Margate "Buoy and Oyster" it was not cheap at £25 for fish and chips, but it was brilliant, huge portions, and so well presented and served, a truly delicious experience. Lovely place as well and really nice staff made you feel really welcome. Not cheap but well worth it.
OMG ! It should be big portions for that price a steak meal is far cheaper ? Fish and chips are a nice tasty meal anyway ! But it's still a ridiculous daft price ? It should have been served on a 9 carat gold plate
Was in Scarborough not long back with the kids. Happened - through bad luck maybe - to walk into the most expensive place there for fish and chips. Shoulda clicked, why that place was practically empty while all the others were queues out the door ..... anyways, decor was lovely serving girls were gorgeous. But they stung me for £20 for mine, and £12.50 each for the kids. But the fish was literally caught off the coast just hours before, too many chips to eat, plenty of sides. No way I could finish it all. Just made damn sure I ate the fish! XD
@@WendyJones-zx7is l agree, £25 is still FAR too much, even if it's a very big portion, it's inctedible the mark up that some restaurants get for what they sell

Gary, that was literally a "pixie portion"and the price was outrageous for what was presented. That SLIVER of fish was only boosted by the batter.Kerridge is laughing at his customers with menu item
Prices like that are ridiculous, but for a simple reason (other than greed), it is to keep the normal day to day oiks out of places like Harrods so that the people who don't care about prices can eat without having to smell normal people.
"The star of the show was the lemon"🤣(Love that) Thanks so much Gary for the fantastic review. Yes, the fish was ever so thin and 9 chips were a joke😏. From what I saw and of course, your words, the sauces weren't much to write home about either. £37 for that!!! I much prefer the good old chippy. I remember the days when I was a student in Manchester and used to pay 13p for a great (quality & quantity) portion of fish & chips🤣(1970/71).
After re- watching both this review , and the Heston Blumenthal review , I had a couple of thoughts . On the chips , the crunch was so loud when you bit into Heston's chips I jumped , not so with Tom's . On the fish , I thought the reason the batter at Heston's was crispier was because they added extra batter during the frying process , not any oxygen . In the end you obviously enjoyed Heston's more . Thankyou for being honest , it's always appreciated . As a side note regarding your preference for vinegar before salt , you are not alone , I have always requested this myself . I recently had fish and chips from an establishment called Oh My Cod in Aldershot , I did not even have to ask , vinegar before salt was automatic . Lovely food , big portion , friendly staff , good value . Also staff regularly go out to pick up litter that less careful patrons might drop . Unfortunately I do not live in Aldershot , my waistline thanks me for that 🤣🤣.🤣
I always thought Tom was a down to earth chef, cooking reasonable family grub?? Obviously I was wrong!!! I would feel a right prat ordering that crap!!
Excellent review! Thank you for exposing this unacceptable and disgraceful conduct by people who trade only on their name and produce substandard issue and expect to continue to make a living. People like you Sir can put sn end to this. Thank you🎉
I bought fish n chips in the Lake District (Hawkshead) & got 9 chips, stacked in 3x3, tho it wasn't £37, it's still a rip off. Best fish n chips for VFM is in Stratford (imo). It's about £12 for whale n chips!!
Hi Gary, I was a part time chef a few years ago, in my own restaurant, working 18 hrs a day, we also had a wine bar, and I rant that too...and to see Tom Kerridges efforts, or his staffs, I'm shocked, because he is a top top tier chef. but he didn't cook it. We have a takeaway fish & chips which is superb, and for 2 of us the bill is £36.00 and I gasp at that, but it's good value when you see the amount you get. Now your plate was bare, no one puts out a plate like that in top tier restaurants, or if they have a decent chef. TK chef is obviously not up for pretty plates, he is a dumper. Get it on the plate and get it gone. They didn't expect you that's for sure. Brilliant narrative, a shame for Tom, he'll be devastated I think. You do it for us, can I have your job, I'd love to be a critic. Are you up for a challenge? The Blue Elephant...mid London. I used to take people there and it was superb, yet I hear nothing about them anymore. It is Thai..and if they are still in business, you are in for a brilliant meal. Take care Gary, xx Sue
I think Tom should be ashamed of this offering, it was simply overpriced, Tom doesn’t cook the food but his name is above the door so he should ensure quality, thank you for the recommendation I will take a look at it Sue xx
I'm not normally interested in food reviews, but it's the way you tell it that makes it interesting. Subbed. :) This restaurant was truly a rip-off, thanks for reviewing it.
Hi Gary, I've just picked myself up off the floor and dusted myself down to comment. Looking at the menu, that meal was £37. The chips are listed seperately at £9.50, so would that be another exact portion size as that on the plate ? If so, that would price each chip at a little over £1.05 per chip. Two things are certain in my life, one, i'll die. Two, i'll never eat in Kerridge's fish and chips. I won't blame you if you don't post for another week or two, give your wallet time to recover. All the best, see you when we see you.
I'm sorry about that David. I didn't even notice that... £1.05 per chip is horrendous. Thanks for watching! I'll be posting on Saturday/Sunday and hopefully you will enjoy it as it's a family run 1940s era place!
Even if it were true that he used "special potatoes"....why!!!? Fish and chip shops have been getting it right all over the country for over 100 years serving up delicious chips with your everyday potato. Real fish and chips comes from fish and chip shops with the tried and tested method, every other style is inferior. This is a classic pretentious case of trying to fix something that is already in tip top condition and also ripping people off in the process.
Hi Gary, I thought £15 was over the top at the local fish shop for haddock and chips. That was appalling 😢 Frankly the batter didn’t look at all appealing to me. I used to work in a chip shop years ago. We always left lumps in the batter. When you fry the fish the lumps explode giving that rough crispy texture that Heston had obviously mastered. His fish looked appealing straight away 👍🏽
When I was a young kid in the 1960s and 70s, growing up in South London, Fish & Chips was still considered a ‘poor man’s meal’. Things changed quite radically after the so-called Cod Wars with Iceland in the 1970s. However prior to this a piece of Cod or Haddock was 9p and after plying football in the local park (jumpers for goal posts😂), my mate and would share a portion of chips that cost 2p ! So, “Fish &Chips” cost 11p. So, if we do a little calculation (forgetting the poncey sauces and lemon): £37.00 is 3700p 3700p / 11p = 336. That means it’s 336 times more expensive there than when I was a kid at my local chip shop in London. Now, obviously we need to bring the change in the value of the £Pound between, let’s say, 1970 and now. Apparently, £100 in 1970 is the equivalent of £1552 in 2023. So, let’s call it about a 15 fold increase. A 15 fold increase….compared to 336 times more?! 🤪 With a more serious comparison: Apparently, the average price for Haddock and Chips has (recently) risen to £9.00. That means that place is charging more than 4x the average price….for something which looked to be mediocre and of a size that I would have still walked away hungry! Good for you for exposing, naming and shaming! 👏🏽👏🏽🙂
Aye lad, ah can remember when we used to get fish n chips and a few scratchings for our supper, and a small bottle of pop, and we still had change from a tanner! Them were t'days ah can tell thee.
Same here. I'm in New Zealand and in either 1970 or 1971 when I was 6 or 7 years old, one fish was 8 cents and chips was 8 cents. By about 1974 at my primary school a local fish and chips shop did the daily run there for the kids and a child's serve of fish and chips was 40 cents.
£37 for un-rashened war food. Bonkers. Even where I live it’s £20 for 2 people to eat a bigger portion than that each. It’s mental to think what it used to cost just 15, 20 years ago.
Doesn't surprise me, I've been a cook for over 30 years (qualified chef but hate the title as I personally think that it's pretentious), premium price for sub-par food. Thank you for the honest review.
@@anglerfish1001 It is probably a more reasonable serving size from a health point of view than what you would expect from an average fish and chip shop, at least.
There is a sit in fish & chip shop in Chorley Lancashire that produces excellent food, bigger portion that you had there, and for fish, chips, peas, bread and butter and a pot of tea it costs £4.90, and they don't charge you for service either :)
Doesn't surprise me. I live on the Surrey/ West Sussex borders and its £12 for medium fish and chips in the local chippy, £16 for a large portion. Extra for mushy peas. Senior Citizen very small portion lunchtime midweek £10. Fish and chips these days are a huge treat.

The Curry sauce didn't look watery and the chips looked very good but I totally agree that £37 is an absolute insult. The fish looked very thin and small and I have had far far better from many Fish n Chip shops. Considering the price I think you've nailed the score👍. Come on Tom Kerridge you should be doing so much better than that...
A good review Gary. Tom grew up on a council estate in Gloucester and I shudder to think of what they would think of paying £37 for those fish and chips.
Thank you Gary for an honest review, the fish and chips were a kids portion worth £12 max. What killed me was the bread roll at £6!,they have no respect for customers charging that. Kerridge’s rent there must be half the bill😂
Not every single one but I do try to reply to those with a different opinion (as long as polite) and other feedback and just your everyday nice comments! It's tough work but I love it.
I was looking for the 12quid comment. Looks really good, no issue with 9 chips, nice ambiance. I'd be really happy to pay 12quid. I'd leave a tip too. 37 just seems like exploitation.
Thank you for being an honest person. I truly and really like England, and I'm enjoying every minute when im over. But I don't like companies stealing my money. I'd bet you'd get better food at the Camden food market and also for a lower price.
Another amazing video Gary!!! I totally agree with everyone’ views and it’s shameful, ludicrous and absolutely ridiculous these prices can be charged. However there’s people out there paying for it. If customers stopped paying it, they’ll be either forced to reduce or not serve it all. Just ‘food for thought’
I would expect a great white shark on my plate for that price!

9 chips? 9...really? 9 chips in a bowl with an unflattering bit of flat fish on a plate for almost £40! Shameful from these folks.
Indeed.
They put the chips in a pot because they would look pitiful if spread out on the plate. Disgraceful.
The general thinking is posh rich folks aren't there to eat they are there to talk mingle so 9 chips is adequate can't be gorging into food the price tag is for the ambience service etc hope this clears.
There's was actually 5 pieces of fish..............think he ate 4.

Our local chippy could do much better for under £8 ..

Never again.

you're usually paying for the location with those things
All places to eat are only as good as the people who work there who are often paid peanuts while the celeb. chef the place is named after gets megabucks in naming payment.

@@GaryEats I fear that Tom Kerridge has jumped the shark (or should I say haddock) with this dish
One thing I've noticed is that you always give waiting staff due credit. Even when you are disappointed with the food/pricing, you usually acknowledge the friendliness of the staff.

You must have low IQ... The rent on this place is 100k per month. So you are not paying for the food but for the location.
@@danielvanr.8681 It's a "hustle" only if £37 is eye-watering to you. The market that Harrod's targets don't need to concern themselves with price. A Rolex Submariner @ £20,000 or a Casio @ £20...

It’s London, in harrods, value is not a term that would be ever relevant. The prices are so the wealthy don’t have to rub shoulders with us peasants.
Quality not great
I had to comment on this because I think you hit the nail on the head.
If it cost £7 you’d say it was great… the issue is pricing. It’s priced like this to make a profit from wealthy shoppers in Harrods. Simple.
I can PROMISE you ain't no celebrities eating there, even the celebs are out of by the RIDICULOUS prices
@@gailtaylor844 Your expectations are less if you pay £7 than £37. Can't get more simple than that!

When I lived in the UK, there was an extremely popular Chinese chippie near us that, even though they had five people serving, as well as the kitchen staff, always had people queuing. Why? Hmmm... you don't seem to understand how market sectoring works.

That said, for £37 id want it to be the best id ever had. You have spared the rest of us wasting our hard earned in that place. Thanks Gary.
Spot on Rob. This was too much for average quality and no quantity. Not good enough and thank you very much mate.

Absolutely, there's the local chippy then there's eating out somewhere posh. It's going to cost more but you expect more ... not quantity ... but taste, quality, and a real experience. Not ASDA fish n chips 😂😂😂
That portion size is absolutely shocking for £37 😭
Agreed.
Even if it was a very large portion the price is still shocking lol
Absolutely agree...9 Chips??
Sadly, the more money than sense brigade encourage harrods to charge such prices.
It's for psychological reasons. Less is more. You value something more if it is scarce.
New subscriber here from the Netherlands. Really entertaining and well produced video's, keep up the good work!
Welcome aboard!
Good vid.

Thank you for subscribing Anthony! Much appreciated - sorry that you’ve also had an unenjoyable experience!
Same here, we went to Great Yarmouth to the most famous fish & chips place... It would not pass any back street Chippy!!!!!
There is absolute no meal to my mind that is worth £84. What were you thinking?
This is an example of how some use the ‘prices have gone up’ excuse to charge extortionate prices for what is a working man’s meal. You paid for the up keep of the grandeur surroundings, the fish and chips were £15 at most and £22 to cover the overheads.
I posted this to Tom and Harrods on Twitter, I don’t expect any reply soon..
Well done for enlightening us Gary 👍
You're more than welcome Mike. I expect you'll be waiting a while for that reply..
@@GaryEats For sure, Harrods won’t give a fig, maybe Tom will, even then, the license agreement is probably in Harrods favour..
Well done posting your remarks to Harrods however do you think they really give a SH,,, ? no ,trust me
Imagine if Tom Kerridge opened up one of these in any seaside town in the uk and had the audacity to serve that for £37.
@@LG-ro5le ..just like Tom kerridge .. .

Would be interesting to know how many chip shops use frozen fish or delivered fresh that day and if there is any taste difference. Two local chip shops in my town, would swear one uses frozen as the taste is bland and portion size tiny. Fish fell apart and turned to mush.
Thank you for your observation
I would be very disappointed if I had spent £17 for that, never mind £37!
My thoughts exactly.
Great minds think alike £37 quid where do I get the application to remortgage sorry I forgot interest rates at 6% can’t even get a mortgage no wonder Gary was cheesed off lol 😂
Our local fish and chip shop has just put up cod and chips peas and drink to £6.50..good value and decent food..great video as always 👍
Its not even worth a fiver.......
MASSIVE MASSIVE rip off!! That could never fill me, and portion size is too small for that price. Almost, 50 US dollars for that rip off meal. WOW!
For that price and for such a small amount of food, I'd expect a reach around and a happy ending before I left !!!!
9 Chips !!!! Don't go in hungry!
🤣🤣🤣❣
😂😂😂😂
They should oblige as they have already done you from behind.
I'm going to Murgatroyds next week. Can't wait!
It's near the airport in Yeadon, their chips ain't all that but fish is always good there
The cheapest in the uk, is about £3 for fish & chips. Pretty good!
You pay for the seat.
Our local Sanders in Cornwall is about 12 quid , always delicious and I can never finish it as the portions quite frankly are too large!
Thank you Peter but this one astonished me as of its location
Poor Gary, he looked so crestfallen after settling up the bill. 😢
Good food is one of the few treats we get in life, and when it goes wrong, it can feel as though we've been cheated. ☹️
Indeed.
Rip off! Big time!
Very nice 👍🏼
I remember a threepenny bag of chips in the 60's 😊 .
The worst part is that after paying £37 ninety minutes later you will still be hungry! It seems that more and more shady restaurants are popping up serving these mini tasteless meals to people.
I did another review afterwards which I never do!
Yes, it's all about making the plates look good for photos and nothing else, how on earth can a restaurant serve nine chips with fish and chips and charge £37 ? It's obviously just there to rip off tourists , no local person will willingly pay that price for fish and chips with nine chips.
if you are hungry 90 mins after eating a 500 calorie meal , your caloric needs must be insane
@@MrRafagigapr seriously that fish and that amount of chip would never fill an average build adult.
First time on your channel, I liked what I saw so I joined up. That was way to much to pay imo. Great review,
That is very kind and appreciated. I hope you enjoy watching the channel.
£7 for the fish and chip £30 for the ambience. They saw you coming, 🙂
This man is a true gentleman. Very blunt in his speech and gave an honest review of the food. Well done Sir.
Thanks so much!
Thank you 😊
Maybe if the roll was freshy baked on premesis (from scratch with a long cold ferment) and the butter was hand churned from milk they specially selected from the farms themselves and the cows receive daily spa treatment xD

Well done Gary. A very fair review in my opinion. I don't mind paying top dollar for great food. I do resent paying over the odds for food that promises a lot but fails to deliver. I still think that you can't beat fish and chips from a proper chippy. They are the experts.

Glad you also agree with the score. That was simple for the service and the lemon. Thanks for watching!
Astonishing glad you called it out Tom get this addressed immediately
Mini fish and chips and pot of curry is £5 at our local chip shop. The fish is a fair size, you get plenty chips and the curry is the best I've tasted and they cook fresh chips every 20 minutes.
I'd sooner starve than pay these prices
I went to a fish restaurant in Margate "Buoy and Oyster" it was not cheap at £25 for fish and chips, but it was brilliant, huge portions, and so well presented and served, a truly delicious experience. Lovely place as well and really nice staff made you feel really welcome. Not cheap but well worth it.
Sounds great!
XD
The best fish and chips I’ve ever had were in Whitby in Yorkshire . But that was 30 years ago . I wonder how much that costs now ?
@@WendyJones-zx7is l agree, £25 is still FAR too much, even if it's a very big portion, it's inctedible the mark up that some restaurants get for what they sell

You’re more than welcome 😊
Harrods is probably the very last place in the UK I would think of for fish and chips.
I'm sure the upper classes would look down their noses at the idea of getting value for money. It’s not conspicuous consumption if money isn't being wasted
@@owenb8636 that’s how “new money” thinks not upper classes - upper classes care about value for money - my father in law is a baronet with an estate in Scotland , grandfather in House of Lords EVERY BODY is extremely tight !!!!!!
New money wastes money - most upper classes are trying to run very large houses while eating toast and wearing holey jumpers - or working traditional jobs for a living and spending money carefully not tackily
I agreed. I was shocked that the meal cost 37 pounds... No way.... Thanks Gary for taking one for the team!!!
It wasn’t just the price it was the poor quality that was provided
Gary, that was literally a "pixie portion"and the price was outrageous for what was presented. That SLIVER of fish was only boosted by the batter.Kerridge is laughing at his customers with menu item
It was very poor Mary.
Prices like that are ridiculous, but for a simple reason (other than greed), it is to keep the normal day to day oiks out of places like Harrods so that the people who don't care about prices can eat without having to smell normal people.
I work around that area. Very wealthy people live and shop around there. 40 quid for a meal means nothing to them.
I wish I could afford not to smell normal people.
"The star of the show was the lemon"🤣(Love that)
Thanks so much Gary for the fantastic review.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks mate :)
Unfortunately I do not live in Aldershot , my waistline thanks me for that 🤣🤣.🤣
Heston's was fantastic, I must say
I always thought Tom was a down to earth chef, cooking reasonable family grub?? Obviously I was wrong!!! I would feel a right prat ordering that crap!!
It wasn't good at all.
Yep, me too - pretty shocked by this. It's definitely lowered my opinion of him quite a bit.

That is very kind and thank you for subscribing it’s really appreciated, price and quality was very poor
Add the service charge 😢

I remember when the " £37.00 fish and chips " story broke lol, Tom Kerridge tried justifying the price by saying they use special potatoes 🤦🤣
They didn’t taste all that special!
Would those "special" potatoes be cooking your meal or serving it? Hmmm......

More fool the people who pay them exorbitant prices they must have more money than sense 😊
Hi Gary, I thought £15 was over the top at the local fish shop for haddock and chips. That was appalling 😢
Frankly the batter didn’t look at all appealing to me. I used to work in a chip shop years ago. We always left lumps in the batter. When you fry the fish the lumps explode giving that rough crispy texture that Heston had obviously mastered. His fish looked appealing straight away 👍🏽
Hi mate. It was so poor. Thanks for the info, that really helps with my reviews going forward. Heston's was superb.
Difference is heston puts vodka into his batter and puts into a carbonator and thats how its so good
I’m sure he does but there is no need to do that as explained. No vodka required 😊
So, if we do a little calculation (forgetting the poncey sauces and lemon):
£37.00 is 3700p
3700p / 11p = 336.
With a more serious comparison: Apparently, the average price for Haddock and Chips has (recently) risen to £9.00. That means that place is charging more than 4x the average price….for something which looked to be mediocre and of a size that I would have still walked away hungry!
Good for you for exposing, naming and shaming! 👏🏽👏🏽🙂
You said it mate!
Aye lad, ah can remember when we used to get fish n chips and a few scratchings for our supper, and a small bottle of pop, and we still had change from a tanner! Them were t'days ah can tell thee.
Idiots pay so they don't have to eat with 'us lot'
As a Northerner that plate of Fish and Chips is a disgrace! 😮
Best ever chips I had was in whitby 😊

Thank you and definitely, a tourist trap and a fool’s trap 🪤
Another amazing video Gary!!! I totally agree with everyone’ views and it’s shameful, ludicrous and absolutely ridiculous these prices can be charged. However there’s people out there paying for it. If customers stopped paying it, they’ll be either forced to reduce or not serve it all. Just ‘food for thought’
I think Tom should be ashamed of this offering he is simply ripping tourists off
