  • Rick Stein's website claims that his fish and chips in Padstow, Cornwall are the best, with a beautiful view of the Camel Estuary, but recent Trip Advisor comments contradict his claim. The comments are numerous and review the service, quality and value of his offering, with some really scathing comments, all of which remain unanswered.
In addition, Rick Stein has been taking some flack in the press for his expensive condiments with mushy peas and tartare sauce at £2 per portion (sit down price). Have you visited this year? What were your thoughts? Drop us a comment and let us know.
To find out what we thought, join us in Padstow on a beautiful evening as we sample a portion.
The Trip Advisor comments are taken at face value and have not been verified.
    The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on RUclips, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
Unfortunately we cannot answer comments coming in more than a week after the publishing date of the video.
    Frequently asked questions:
    Do we do meet ups?
We regularly receive requests to meet up from viewers and subscribers, but unfortunately we do not have availability to be able to do this.
The channel is a very time consuming hobby, fitted around our employment and family commitments. Setting aside time for meet ups, means that we are not able to film and edit our weekly videos that you love to watch.
If you happen to bump into us while out and about, we will be more than happy to have a quick chat!

How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.

We were recently in Wrexham, had a pint then a sit down fish n' chips at a restaurant; the giant cod in batter came with tartare sauce, mushy peas, bread and butter and pot of tea or cold drink of choice. This magnificent feast was just £9 per head, and we praised the staff for their friendly approach, professional manner and great food. rating 10/10, cannot be beaten for temperature, quantity and service Daiawn pob.

Fish and chips for £40 for two people as a takeaway is insane. My local chippy is £15 for the same amount of cod and chips, fresh from Hastings beach every day. Rick's portion size is really toeing the line of the bare minimum, but definitely not at that price.

@@CornishWalkingTrails You are lovely folks but surely you know whats going on with chippies ??? 30 years ago i was vegan living in Padstow .. i was vegan because we kneew then the seas were vastly overfished and it was causing colapse of the ecology. Vegan is a crap diet, its terrible, but the idea of wrecking the oceans or farming all the fish is like a picture of hell. Sadly its going to cost us a fortune to put right so these top notch shops try to do their bit at our expense. If you think that place is sad try visiting the totnes chippy which is now a very animal food minimal expensive restaurant. The days of cheap fish suppers are over :( Cornwall used to be like heaven but once it hits the open market and green legislation itll only be super rich chinese and arab folk living there i suspect. I went for an interview in this fish and chip shop in summer 2018. There isn't anything different to a normal shop minus the scale. The chips are made off site, at Stein owned suppliers, and bought in frozen. In summer the place is queuing out the door all day and you're paid minimum wage so no wonder some of the comments mention staffing - they're rushed off their feet doing 12 hour shifts!

It may appear to be expensive, especially given the current economic climate but, I just did a quick survey of our local fish & chips shops, checking their prices against what you were charged and, overall there really wasn't much in it. Some were perhaps £2 -£5 or so cheaper overall but the portion sizes for mushy peas and tartar sauce were smaller and they were not donating a meal to children in poverty. Everything has a cost. We are still generally hung up on prices from years ago when ordering fish & chips was a far more common thing than it is today and it was relatively much cheaper. Bear in mind inflation and the cost of everything going up. For example, £10 in 2015 is £13.30 in today's money. Or for an even starker contrast, that same £10 in the year 2000 is now the equivalent of £20.60 in 2023. Anyway, great video. Keep them coming 👍

There is a Stein restaurant near me - eat in Cod & chips are £21.95. Two doors away is an independent take away is £12 and eat in is £14 with a mushy peas/garden peas, pot of tea & homemade roll - all cooked to order. Huge portions + unlimited chips. Very nice restaurant, great waiting staff, excellent service.
Guess which is busiest & has a queue day & evenings? Clue is - it's not Stein.

Hi Both. My wife and I were in Padstow this Summer (we live in France) and considered buying f and c from Rick Stein's but eventually decided that we would probably be paying more for the name than for the food, so we went on our way. Pricewise that was a good decision, I think. I think we get better value from our local English fish and chip man (yes, here in France !) who comes around once a month. That's a treat.

We visited Rick Stein‘s restaurant a few years ago in Padstow and used the car park at the front of the building on the quay. I believe they (RSR) use a slot system where you have an allocated timeslot to have your meal, but they were running late that evening and we received a parking ticket. We paid the fine, we went there as a family because of a family member loss and we gathered there as a family. More family cars were also going to get booked, but we managed to dash around to put additional parking tickets on. By early hours of the morning two of us developed food poisoning, we both had the same pudding. When we recovered from our bout of food poisoning I decided to look at the reviews for RSR and to my amazement there were others!! It was reported to RSR but the restaurant did not fully acknowledge the complaint nor took the issue seriously.

This year we decided not to go back as they have become so ‘run down’ yet very expensive for food etc. Its quite sad really, and no wonder people choose to go abroad for the same price and have guaranteed sunshine! Recently we stayed at a Warner hotel and visited Lyme Regis, the hotel was distinctly average and Lyme Regis was again very ‘run down’. The local councils probably charge high council tax levels but seem to do very little in the up keep of their towns! Let’s face it, Britain’s becoming a bit of a ‘dump’! All empty shops, charity shops or mobile phone shops!!!

The last time we visited Padstow was around five years ago and, as much as I personally like Rick Stein, it did seem like some kind of Rick Stein theme park. At one point I turned around on a spot and managed to count nine separate Rick Stein businesses, including a patisserie ("oh no, not ANOTHER fishing village with a patisserie", I hear you cry...). Hundreds of people milled around carrying identikit Rick Stein bags.......it was all a bit much, really. It was also disappointing to see people queueing outside of his fish and chip takeaway while the other takeaways seemed empty. I found it all a bit much, and I say that as someone who actually likes the bloke. I'm glad the fish and chips you had were good (and I don't think the charges for condiments were excessive), but it does slightly annoy me that they're not exactly transparent when it comes to the origin of the cod and haddock they serve (which will be the vast majority of the fish they serve). "Our menu features a large range of locally sourced fish served battered or grilled....." OK, that's great, but neither the cod nor the haddock will be locally-sourced. While the spiel on the website isn't exactly false, it's definitely misleading. Cod and haddock will be from the North Atlantic, is frozen at sea and will come into the takeaway frozen, not fresh, and certainly not 'local'. To be fair to Rick Stein, few chippes go out of their way to let people know this, but it is absolutely the industry standard. Rant over!

    • @Another_taco.Yes_please

Yes, you can of course catch cod and haddock in UK waters, but it is not caught in the kind of quantities the fish and chip trade requires. I can guarantee you that the cod and haddock Stein is selling is not fresh and certainly isn’t landed locally. There’s nothing wrong with that, and that’s absolutely the industry standard (I’ve owned a business in the field, so I’m not making it up). I’m sure he sells some fish that is local, but it won’t be the cod or haddock.

Totally agree with your review. That is my experience of Rick Stein Fish and chips.
As a new local, I go here for a treat. It's probably the best quality I've had in the area (I'm sure there are some I haven't discovered yet). But it's consistently good and we usually take friends there to sit down inside. As with everything, you get what you pay for, and often you pay a premium just for the extra 10%. Of course fish and chips is excellent in Whitby, close to my hometown, but I'd still say Rick Steins is on par. I think the bad reviews are left by people who jsut want tons of chips you can't actually eat, at a low cost and paying more for an adequate portion is a rip-off. Each to their own but I think the bad reviews are unjustified.
That said, I was pleasantly surprised by Shipwrights on the other side of the Harbour. We went there when Steins had too long a que, and were pleasantly surprised by the quality and value.

I watched the film on Public Rights of Way and Farm Animals. We have a large field that is crossed by a Public Right of Way and it is what it is. What do you do with a huge field, if you’re not a farmer? Our answer to that, is to “rent” it out to a local farmer on a peppercorn rent....he maintains all of the fencing (22 acres of) and rotates Sheep and Cattle on it, so the field is constantly “mowed” and maintained and a local farmer has a bit less to financially contend with? However......Cows......Whoever you are, beware the Cows.....a herd definitely has a “herd mentality” and if they take against you, you’re absolutely buggered! Cattle kill farmers and they can and will, kill you. So box clever around Cows.....Cows have to be out in the fields and it’s their space that you’re sharing with them....
Steinstow....loved this edition, as it was a fair and unbiased look at one venue. I thought that Sarah’s meal was a rip off...it was very much smaller all round, however Andrews meal wasn’t (given the current, nationwide, uplift in pricing)?
Sadly and across the UK, we are being fleeced....and always have been, ever since VAT arrived. As a nation, we don’t complain enough by “voting with our feet” and all we do is complain bitterly and carry on shopping.....the Bean Counters have done the maths and know, just about, how much they can skin us for and so they do....one day though, like the cows in the field, we’ll stampede....😎
Keep up the good work.....I’m about to put the kettle on and light my Pipe....😜

As I walk into town from the Camel trail, gawking into Stein's chippy is an essential stop along the route for my dog: he appreciates the smells while I look longingly at the menu. I was really hoping you would say the food was terrible as I could then stop drooling over that menu. 😂 Stein's is not what I've heard as most recommended, but it's open a lot vs the other one which has limited hours. If you're near Padstow and don't mind being outside the town proper, Trevisker garden center café is so friendly and make lovely fish and chips in addition to gobs of other (more) healthy stuff. Absolute best "with dogs" eating spot in the area! Thank you for the video - you two are delightful. 😊

I've never been to Padstow but I have been a massive Rick Stein fan for years. If I ever do make a visit I have no doubt that fish and chips would be a must and as a treat, Stein's fish and chips would be my choice. Of course there are other cheaper options but while in Padstow, as a one off, I would gladly pay the extra for the experience. Would I be a regular if I lived in the area? At that price, probably not but 25-30% extra to try the celebrity chef option at a tourist hot spot. Of course I would. The reports make it sound as if he's charging £1.75 for a sachet of tartar sauce but it's freshly made to his recipe. I'd be having that as well, along with mushy peas which is not a condiment. A very fair review here which also tells the truth about the extras, rather than the one star bandwagon reviewers. I wish I was in Padstow now: I'd be having Stein's fish and chips!

We drove to holiday in Padstow for a week in mid September 2023, and had a great time. I don't recognise some of the reviews here. We paid £44 for 3 Cod n Chips, the chips were not from a frozen bag they were really good fresh cut cooked in beef fat. The cod was equally very good. We pay £36 in Edinburgh for 3 take away cod n chips from our local chippy believe me paying the extra £8 in Rick Stein's was well worth it, much better taste and quality.

I can believe this. I recently took my parents to his restaurant in Sandbanks, Poole. The food had very little flavour. It seemed to just be a restaurant people wanted to 'pose' in due to the famous name, but didn't really care about the food or what it tasted like. Was very dissapointing and overpriced. Waiter had an attitude problem too 😂

We visited Padstow area earlier this year. As we had our dog with us we could not try his more upmarket restaurants but did visit his pub, The Cornish Arms, just outside the town.
Food was pretty decent and not too pricey at all but, as it is a Rick stein pub, we were disappointed by the lack of fish or shell fish on the menu. Perhaps they have found fish is not to the taste of pub food clientale.
But we were also disappointed by the choice of puds. It was an offer of stodge, stodge, or more stodge.
We had better meals at other pubs in and around Padstow.

Great touch on the GF vinegar. Both meals look delicious, and just the right serving size for me. I ate Rick's fish and chips a few years back. My family are Cornish and live in Falmouth, Newquay and St Columb Minor. We went on May 1st and it was hectic busy, and I got to see the Obby Oss. The takeaway meal we got was outstanding. It was expensive back then, but I'd still pay todays prices, because I know the food will be fantastic.

To pay that sort of cost for only slightly above bog standard fish & chips and then have to suffer sitting on a wooden picnic bench in the rain would leave a nasty taste in my mouth. When we visited Padstow, we decided not to line his pockets but found a clotted cream Cornish pasty that was well worth the cost.

It looks like a fun trip to Ricky's Chippy! with no queues, excellent service, and fresh crispy fish & chips (now getting hungry). Over all I think that was a good price for an occasional treat, and the gluten-free option. Though I think the canned drinks were overpriced. It's interesting to see how accompaniments vary across the country. I used to think mushy peas on the side was exclusively a Northern traditional until a Cornish friend ordered them with his fish & chips in Hayle. Here in London, the usual traditional accompaniment on offer always used to be a large pickled gherkin or large pickled onion (or both), and that's what I prefer. Though a number of London fish & chip shops are now offering mushy peas as an option. Great video ~ a really entertaining review, and I loved Andrew's fishy puns :)

Hi Sarah and Andrew. The food did look good, but very pricey. For us in South Africa that is very expensive. (921 Rands). Our local fish & chip shop sells 5 decent portions of hake and enough chips for a family of four, all wrapped in grease proof paper and newspaper like in the olden days. No charge for lemon and salt & vinegar. We also add a portion of fried onion rings (the container is about the size of the one your fish came in) for R157. Equivalent of 6.8 pounds. Very filling and delicious. I look forward to your videos every Friday, so keep up the good work.🙂

I live 20 minutes from St Ives and more than happy to be on the other side of the bay. As for your fish and chips, that piece of cod was a good size and all obviously enjoyed, however I steer clear of any with designer names.

Having worked in Hotel & Catering all my life I was disgusted to hear about the £2 charge. There is more than enough profit in the price of the fish and chips to not pass on this charge. My understanding though was that the £2 would be for any condiments (salt/pepper/vinegar sachets) but not the mushy peas you referred to as I would be expecting mushy peas / gravy / curry sauce to be chargeable items and not free as they are wherever I have been. I think you are right though about it being “treat” and that shouldn’t be the case, it should be more affordable. Rick Stein is out of touch with reality on this. I noticed the name on the vinegar sachet and it is one of the “bog-standard” cheap cheap products that actually cost 9p each!! Less if bought in bulk..

I get the overheads but I don't see that many in this case, take-away, sat outside, not waiting for a table to arrive or spend an hour or two with guests eating their meal, no washing up, all disposables so no breakages. Very cheap overheads. If you were providing a full service restaurant a different matter.

The problem with review sites like Trip Advisor is that generally speaking, people are quicker to go on them and criticise when they aren’t happy, than they are to bother if they have a good experience. This always creates a natural imbalance and it explains why so many businesses pay dubious companies in places like India to write fake reviews. In addition you’re always going to get people with a chip on their shoulder (pun intended - you asked for them!) about something in their lives, leading to a tendency to stick the knife in no matter what their experience. Let’s be honest here - some of these people have probably never been to Cornwall, let alone Padstow. Mr “go to Whitby” has most likely never set a foot outside of Yorkshire! Thanks for putting the record straight. I’m sure Rick is very grateful.

You can buy a mackerel on any quayside in Cornwall for 50p- a lot less if you buy a few boxes. How can anyone justify such a mark up ? Stein’s greed cost him dear as we stayed away in droves , the restaurant was soon sold to someone else and Stein scuttled back to Padstein.

My experience is that wherever a ‘celebrity ‘ chef takes over a pub and claims they are restoring traditional pub food, like fish and chips, you pay way over the odds for unexceptional food and normally smallish quantities. £15-16.00 is actually cheaper than the other places run by these rip-off merchants. Last menu I looked at in London, (before abandoning the idea of eating in the ‘pub’) was charging £27.00 for fish and chips.
