We were caught out by their parking cameras . While shopping at Christmas last year we spent over £180 on middle isle stuff and food . Two weeks later we received a demand for £45 which we naturally refused to pay , which then turned into £90 . We again refused to pay and the saga went back and forth for over 4 months until I sent a bill for £600 for admin charges and £500 for harassment . We are 77 and 75 respectively .

My understanding is bananas are always shipped green due to their relatively short shelf life. Otherwise a cargo hold full of ripe bananas would be rotten before they arrive. Bananas also naturally produce ethylene gas which causes them to ripen and as I understand it, the banana trade has used introducing ethylene gas for years as a method of ensuring bananas arrive ripe on the shelf.

A lot of times I use my trusty, reusable shopping bag, if it won’t fit in I can’t buy it. After all said and done they’re in business. If the customers don’t like Lidl then they can go to another supermarket that employs similar tactics.

I used to regularly shop at Aldi and had a shopping list printed in the order items were positioned in the store. So as soon as I entered the store I got exactly the items I wanted and no more which kept my bill lower. Every now and and again the store would decide to move some items to another location which infuriated me, so I pencilled in on the list where they had moved to. Once home I would get on my laptop and move the things on the list and print out a new shopping list… I did this for years and I’m guessing it saved me £££s. Nowadays I don’t bother as much…. I will add though that my shopping bill cost is always lower than when my partner goes shopping, which proves that being organised is a much cheaper way than not using a proper list at all… ✊

We loved Lidl's and Aldi until the prices started going through the roof, many items doubling and trebling in price. Everything was fine until COVID-19 started then the prices started rising. We are pensioners on basic pension and our shopping bill has doubled. We tend to look for reduced items nearing their sell-by date. We don't buy very much meat now as we just can't afford it. We don't buy biscuits or cakes anymore and weekend treats are just to exspensive. We still see many people still filling up their trolleys. I suppose if couples are both working or have second pensions and have good wages they can afford to. This government has brought our country to its knees, they don't have to struggle with low wages so prices don't affect them. We have reached an us and them situation in this country and I can't see things changing in the future as prices are still rising despite what we are being told in the media.

Ripening fruit, particularly bananas using ethylene gas has been going on for at least 45 years to my knowledge as I worked for Geest importers that long ago. It is an excellent way of minimising food waste by staggering the ripening times of large quantities of fruit. To lengthen the time bananas keep try keeping them away from other fruits and separating them out. Fruit and vegetables produce ethylene gas naturally during the ripening process so storing fruits together will hasten the process. I keep bananas for a week this way separating them out in a cool shaded area in the kitchen.
Ethylene has been used since the ancient Egyptians, who would gash figs in order to stimulate ripening (wounding stimulates ethylene production by plant tissues).
There is no deceit just good practice to minimise waste.

Another point is not putting sell-by dates on some products in order to cut down on waste, with supermarkets disposing of tons of food every year. Still, of course, now the retailers don't create so much waste because they sell it and the customers find it's rotten when they get it home. I'm not sure but I belive this was a Government initiative.

The reason why Aldi and Lidl are cheap the warehouse's have very little staff and the supplier's have to unload there own lorry's in freezing temperatures if the public knew what we as supplier's have to do you wouldn't shop in any of them it only happens here in the UK not in the EU

“Additionally, the carts are tilted in a way that makes the items slide towards the handle, making it less likely for customers to see what they have already picked up and thus more likely to add more items. “ 😂 what absolute rubbish. The bottom of the cart floor tilts to the back so that when lined up in a row the carts fit inside of the cart in front of it, saving space. If the bottom was level you wouldn’t be able to slide into the next cart, meaning you’d have to store them one behind the other.

I have to say Morrisons does sell green bananas, where I live anyway, my missus likes them to last a bit, but I'm having to stop her from sticking the buy 2 at such and such a price into the trolley, as A the saving isn't a lot usually, and B, once you've done that a few times, the total shop cost is more than you budgeted for.

I once watched an assistant at Morrisons bagging bananas and labelling 5 for a certain price.I asked him if they were just the ordinary bananas, not fair trade or anything like that.He confirmed that they were just everyday bananas. I took a bag of them, I opened the bag and weighed them. They cost 50odd pence out of the bag, opposed to 90odd pence in the bag.I prefer fruit and veg sold loose.

I used to work for a potato grower who started selling to supermarkets. Our job was to grade the potatoes fit for sale eg. Remove rotten ones + anything not potatoes. The Supermarkets would negotiate the price in advance of collection. When they had received the goods, 1 week later they'd claim there was excess rotten potatoes, stones, leaves and so on, then they would try to reduce the price by up to 50% but would still take the produce. We got the produce back, graded through it again and absolutely nothing wrong unlike they claimed. They put numerous producers out of business in ways like this over the last 20 years - now your potatoes come from places like Egypt where regulation isnt as high. We even discovered produce being bagged up as being from the UK! And... those baby/salad potatoes bought in expensive small bags - were classed as animal feed by the supermarkets kindly taken off the growers hands for £10 a ton, rebagged and sold to the public for 500% profit.

  • @foxstrangler
    @foxstrangler 8 месяцев назад +1

Basic rules of the supermarket. The essentials are placed in all 4 corners of the building, so you have to go right round for an 'average' shop.
'Eye level is buy level' Supermarkets charge their suppliers a premium to display goods at eye level. Look on the shelves above and below for cheaper prices. 'Own brand' goods come from the same factory as expensive premium brands. It's the same stuff until they stick the label on the tin/packet. Most people go round the store the same way, so 'Offers' are priced with the signs facing you. Go round the opposite way, and you will be less likely to buy 'spur of the moment' goods. Use cash, before it disappears. Loyalty cards are a con, they sell your data.
I worked for a supermarket chain, worked for fresh produce suppliers, and in international logistics, so I know what goes where.
Bananas are shipped green and placed in a ripener at the store. Standard practice. The big stores get the choice of fruit and veg, small shops and markets get the left overs. Go to a farm shop where you can.

As for the sloping trolley, what a load of bollox. And the pricing thing - well it's up to you to check prices instead of just dumping things in your trolley without checking. Take responsibility instead of blaming others if you get ripped off. And anyway, once you've been to Lidl a couple of times you would know how to shop there anyway. Sounds to me like a disgruntled employee who got the sack for being a tool.

Some of the parkside tools and their accompanying accessories/consumables (as an example) are simply amazing for the money…don’t get me wrong, sometimes they miss the mark a bit, but in the main, they’ve saved people a small fortune they’d have had to pay at DIY stores…I’m also guessing that B&Q and wickes have definitely felt the effects! Don’t be so quick to condemn things people.

I bought bananas from Lidl a couple of weeks ago. Took them a week to ripen the way I like them - skins starting to go spotty - that's when bananas should be eaten. I let some of them go overripe to make banana cake. The bananas that go off quickest are those that have been kept in cold storage for a long time. I've had bananas in the past I bought from another supermarket and they turned black within a couple of days. Find Lidls fruit to be OK. Bought strawberries from them to make jam with. They were nice strawberries and the jam turned out good. Next year I'm growing my own strawberries among other things.
