- Have you ever wondered how Aldi get away with their fake brands? Aren’t things like this the reason Trademarks exist? Isn’t it illegal? Why don’t Aldi get sued and taken to court? Well its all to do with their clever use of graphic design. In This video I answer all of these questions and explain how they use clever design to get around any legal issues that copying another brands intellectual property might cause. We also look at the way brands like the beer brand Brewdog are starting to fight back.
Aldi are one of the fastest growing supermarket companies in the world, with more and more people shopping in their stores how much longer will they be able to get away with it? Especially with some many people swearing with blind taste test hauls that the Aldi fake product is indeed better than the original one they are copying.

@@kittoko9 well most of Aldi's knock off products are actually made in the same factories as the genuine brands, so they taste exactly the same, they're just packaged differently with different names, but are exactly the same products in terms of production and quality.

I buy whatever is cheapest the majority of the time. Sometimes a brand name product is better, but most of the time I don't find it makes much of a difference and sometimes the no-name brands are better. But realistically I'm not just going to pay more for a brand name unless there is a good reason to buy it.
Very true. A lot of the time the branded and non branded products come from the same factory, and are just put in different packets...
My Mum once saw her best friend decanting Aldi wine into a more expensive bottle. She’s never told her and we still laugh about it. Aldi is the first choice when it comes to shopping in our household.

I had a roommate who did that with some caustic, harsh, bottom-shelf vodka. He once got a bottle of expensive, top-shelf vodka for Christmas, and when it emptied, he topped it off with the cheap stuff. The stuff was so harsh, it literally etched the inside of the bottle and turned it opaque.
I wouldn't allow my dog (which I don't have) to shop in Aldi!? What's wrong with you? Also is cheap and there is a good reason for that, its all crap!!
@@BenNurdin You have no clue. Aldi is cheap because they don't invest in advertising their single products. Many products are even better quality than the brand product, because the brand products have to save on production, to pay for the advertisement.

I don't go shopping because I care about the brand, I shop to get the food that I need at a reasonable price. When brands like Kellogg's, Nestlé and General Mills are raking in as much money as they do, I couldn't possibly care less if a small dent is made in their profits because another brand beat them at their own game.

I buy the Aldi products because they're legitimately good, not because they have similar packaging to the """real""" products. I was never "fooled" by Aldi packaging. I was always of the opinion that the copycat names and packaging were just there to help people recognize the type of product they are. Cola is easier to identify as cola when it comes in a red bottle, for example.
The aldi tomato sauce is better than heinze .. its a touch less acidic and more balanced...
And i tried both aldi beans and heinze beans in the same week ..
I really couldnt tell any difference apart from the price tag ...

I don't know if it is still the case (Didn't buy the Brand Ketchup since years) but in Germany many years ago the Aldi Brand Ketchup was made by Kraft foods and taste exactly like the Kraft Ketchup of this time.

The large, well known, ubiquitous brands seem to have a great deal of contempt for their customers. I try NOT to buy any of their products if I can find one that's a suitable replacement. One example is Aldi's "Simply Nature" organic ketchup. It's fantastic, so I would never go back to Heinz. I try substitutes for all brand name items and if it's a good product, the "big" name is off my list forever! Thanks Aldi.❤
So prous of ALDI, they are providing their customers the real value minus the show.. after all food items need to taste well and be good quality and they have both..

Aldi are a pretty solid supermarket in their own right in the UK and are growing and I suspect it's similar across most of Europe. Most people I know call Aldi brands as knock off brand name - for example knock off bounty or even just saying the name of the brand itself knowing it's actually the Aldi version.
These generally are as good if not better quality especially in cooked meat and chocolate. It seems the major brands are undergoing shrinkflation whereas Aldi are consistently cheap and decently sized.
Totally, everyone I know who shops at Aldi (including me) calls all the ‘copycat’ brands exclusively by their real names. A Titan will always be a Mars... with COVID and lots of people’s income shrinking I can only see Aldi getting stronger.

Aldi Nord, is Aldi in the USA, Aldi Süd is Trader Joe's in the USA, and Lidl is LIDL in the USA.
It's not new and better, it's cheaper and more effective for them as a company. And my family always buys from aldi and whenever I try it expecting it to taste like the brand it's copying it taste nothing alike and is shit. For fuck sake I literally just wiped my ass with aldi toilet paper and they still don't know how to have the little lines in it to make it easy to tear. It's lazy and stealing and I'm sick of everyone trying to convince me it's better. I don't really like big brands that much but at least they give me the product I want 98% of the time😡😤🤬
What's funny is that you mentioned Apple as an example where Apple itself took inspiration (or copied) designs from a german company named "Braun" and their designer "Dieter Rams".
It's pretty normal for me as a german to buy at Aldi; idk how many aldi stores are at your country. But here in germany there is an aldi almost everywhere. I have 2 Aldis within walking distance of my home, there is one where I grew up and there is also one right next to my workplace.
I generally hate branded produtcs because I don't want to pay for all that marketing and also I don't care about brands (eventough I could afford them). If I want tomatoketchup I just buy whatever tastes the best and is the least expensive. That's mostly the store brand and not the stuff from Heinz.
A few years ago aldi was a very niche supermarket in the UK, now they are opening up loads of new stores and everyone loves them!
New stores opening all the time along with Lidl and both are putting British traditional supermarkets to the test . Consumers are flocking to the German Retail Chains.
Heinz tomato ketchup has more sugar and less tomato than aldi store brand ketchup. Heinz ketchup is inferior.
The name brand companies can save money by stop paying millions in endorsements and spending billions in advertising. Pass the savings to the consumer and they will buy the product because it will be affordable.

Fun Fact: Often is the brand inside the copy. Aldi buys a lot of it stuff from the large brands and it is produced in the same factory. Sometimes with small differences in the recipe like more of this spice, less sugar, more tomatoes and so on. This deals are very confidential so you never know whats inside.
My daughter and I are of the same opinion. We admire Aldi, very cleverly, not giving a fuck.

Ive found out that Lidl knock offs are usually nicer than the actual brands
It's hit or miss for me, some of their stuff is pretty good others like their Oreo copy, are absolute dog shit.

Depends on your indivitual taste: If Coca Cola is to sweet for you and the Aldi Cola has less sugar maybe you like the Aldi Coke more. Others will hate them because for them Coca Cola is not sweet enough and even worse the Aldi Coke is even less sweet than the not sweet enough Coca Cola

Yeah, in ‘normal’ supermarkets they wouldn’t be able to get away with Aldi’s tactics, as they stock the real version on the same shelves, making the chances of confusion that much higher.

Frugality is the future. The brands may taste slightly better, but are they worth twice or three times as much? I'd say no. The big test will be when inflation drops, will Aldi drop their prices, or will they be greedy and keep them high?
I'm amazed at anyone who can be sticklers for popular name brand products in today's economy. I almost feel proud having found cheaper knock offs that taste virtually the same. It's thanks to Aldi's that can actually eat potato chips again since their stuff is usually 2/5th the price of more mainstream chip brands.

Brilliant explanation of why Aldi are successful, good for the economy, and easy on my grocery budget. Their products are, indeed, as good as or often better than the leading brand they "copy." In my 20+ years of shopping with them, I have only had to return one item when they changed suppliers of a certain ginger beer. The KCAL count, on the replacement product went up 16.7% and the ingredients list doubled, including preservatives, artificial flavors, invert sugar, and brominated vegetable oil. Oy vey!
Bish, Aldi ketchup is ten times better than Heinz garbage ketchup. Less sugar, more tomato.
(Both are inferior to home made ketchup, though. Even less sugar!)
I love the Aldi copy cat products they are just as good and nobody really sees inside my cupboards or fridge freezer so I am saving vast amount of money buying Aldi goods than branded goods especially in times of high inflation.
So long as they don't pass it off, I don't see a problem. Trademark isn't intended to prevent people selling similar products, its to prevent people selling fraudulent or counterfeit products or products so similar that, at a glance, a reasonable consumer wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I think that is a fair standard. I would never buy Aldi Cola, the fact they use a fancy font and a red background are designed to make me think, 'oh this is Aldi's Coke' it isn't designed to make me mistakenly buy it thinking it was Coca-Cola, if that was the intent or how a reasonable consumer would respond, then that would be and should be unlawful.
Hi! A nice video :) One point you didn't say, at least in Germany quite some private-label products are from the same factories as the branded product. Sometimes in clear sight (as being printed as the producer on the back), sometimes more hidden (as in having created a subsidiary with another name to be printed on), sometimes even more hidden (as in the supermarket is printed as the responsible entity, then you have to investigate more). When confronted with that, the companies most often say stuff like "different quality of ingredients" etc. So the brands make money with Aldi and co. as well, and they will do so because the purchasing power of the discount stores is so giant.
Pasta is a perfect example of this, there is pretty much 3 factories that make all the pasta…
Mostly I avoid the "Brand Trap" because most of the time it is a Gigantic RIP-OFF.
Even products where I choose to buy brand, I look for a replacement regularly.
I believe the ubiquity of knock-off brands is proof of how strong brand loyalty is for most people. It's tough for a genuinely new product to compete against some of the top established brands because most people generally stick to what they know and can count on for quality. Dressing up your product similar to household brands makes the leap much easier for consumers.

Liking copycat products to the real thing
It depends and it involves trial and error with both brands.
For me, Aldi's Pot Noodles are better than Golden Wonders or Lidl's but on the other hand, Lidl's and other Salami's is better than Aldi's.

In my research I have found that many cases, but not all,, Aldi rebrand and not so much copies, one example is Hellmans,, Hellmans makes many types of condiments and sauces, catsup, mustard, mayonnaise are only a few to mention. What happens is when and at Hellmans reaches there production quota. There line production stops and Aldi production takes over, in a way we're there temporarily leasing the facility. Packaging is swapped out and the packaging usually comes from the same packaging supplier, same ink and similar logos. Hellmans is Burnman. This practice is used throughout many brand and sometimes with only slight variations. Another example is General mills vs Millville cereal, yes Millville is produced at General Mills facilities, packaging is just swapped out. Sometimes the name brand is sold right next to Aldi brand with similar colored packaging ,i.e red container of Tanil laundry soap right next to tide.. green container of Aldi laundry soap right next to Gains. Guess were the cheese comes from, the lunch meat.. yogurt, cream,. This is true with so many of there products, but not all. This info wasn't easy to find, almost like there a disclosure act in place. So sometimes fake isn't fake, just packaged differently..Sometimes....

There are some things i will never buy the knock off or cheaper version of. These are things like chocolate and cheese which you can immediately tell the difference between.

Same here, but this is not true for cheese. I don't know what is the situation in the US, but here in hungary, Aldi's cheese is very good. (Grana Padano, Old Chedar, Parmigiano Reggiano, etc)

Just one thought in addition to the beer-case. I'm not sure, if the case is the same in the us, but in Germany ALDI often orders the the products from the the same brand-company and just redesigns the wrappings. Here in Germany, you can look up the company-codes and will notice, that the manufacturers behind the ALDI-products are the same as the well known brands, you just cant see it immediatly :)

ALDI’s copycat Products don’t stop at food. They also do that for laundry detergent as well. I am perfectly content with that because it is on average $6 cheaper and I get the same results!

This is wrong XD, this offbrands are no copycats. Aldi has contracts with for example Heinz, Heinz gives the Product with a little less sugar or another igredient swapt to aldi. Aldi changes the label and sells it as his "own" Brand. In Germany where Aldi originates from these items are called B-Ware. This are Products which "not meet the requirements" for the Brand. Aldi can sell them cheaper and the Brand Heinz doesn't lose Face or Prestige while selling there Products at Aldis cheaper, both win. Sometimes you can look at the Factory where it's produced it's often the same as the original.
I've bought them and enjoyed them, aldi sucks when it comes to fresh fruit and veg, but when it comes to meat and dairy I'm impressed.

I think you meant "exorbitant" rather than "exuberant" prices. Otherwise, nice video. I always shop at Aldi first and only go to the brand supermarkets if I really prefer a brand, or need certain foods.

I the time of high inflation- Aldi is providing value and good competition to help keep prices down. I go to Aldi and get an armful of goods for under $20, and would only get a couple of goods from Woolworths or Coles.

Other than Coca-Cola I'll always buy store brand. I don't care to pay for advertising, sports and event sponsorships and "promotional allowances" (essentially manufacturer kickbacks to retailers).
Maybe the great word of mouth reputation of Aldi's inhouse brands have gained is making it less useful for Aldi to cling to the original products. Because an obvious knock-off is a statement of close but not quite there.
I always shop at Aldi . It’s some 30 dollars cheaper for the same products at save mart . Sure there’s not as big a selection but I buy what feeds me well
There seems to be a coordinated attack on Aldi's grocery stores. Could it be they are taking too much of the grocery sales market. I love Aldi's. the stores are not 20 acres big and I like a lot of the products better than the products in other stores.

I have always loved Dr.Pepper and more recently the cream soda Dr.Pepper. But my Wife is a Manage at a Grocery store and she brought home their store brand “Laura Lynn” colas and now Im absolutely addicted to those. They have their own flavour apart from Coke or Pepsi. We go through about 4 12packs a week. This past week someone forgot to order them and we weren’t able to have any and it that really sucked. Never thought I’d like a store brand cola but here we are.

You can't Tredmark a colour because Cadbury tried to Tredmark that purple colour they've got but they wasn't aloud, so that's a lie, unless the law has changed now!!
You can trademark a colour however it is a little convoluted. As an example, using Cadbury purple your free to use that exact purple in your brand or logo if you ran a clothing company however if you setup a chocolate or snack company and then attempted to use the purple that would be trademark infringement and Cadbury would shut you down as you’re both selling edible products.

The only i remember several years ago i bought it from Aldi (Süd) was "RIVER Cola", which was a pretty attempt to be like Coca-Cola's trademark with a different textures. also it's more alot cheaper (it cost 45 cents, Pledge 20) than the original product.
I've never cared about it. Some of their food products are decent quality. Then I buy these products.
Saying that, I cook atom the very basis ingredients, so branding has little influence over me.
You can shop at Marks and Spencer which would cost less than Aldi , go in around 5ish and they mark down their goods which will last days and taste much better .

Too much bare-level innovation and profits in food industry causes companies like mondelez, nestle-general mills.
I feel a bit put out by the casual acceptance of the widespread abuse of intellectual property laws. A trade mark is supposed to identify a product or service. When they can trade mark almost anything (your words) and create multiple trade marks for one company or product, it's abuse--particularly when the TM is granted for a slogan or phrase. "Fair and Balanced", "Always Low Prices", "Let's Geet Ready to Rumble!", and "Yuuup" have all received trade marks--as has the color pink for one type of fiberglass insultation. That's an abuse of the original intent of the laws and to say that Aldi is violating a trade mark by having a similar-sounding brand or similar package is unfair,
The dfference is, all these cheap copycat items at Aldi are only the packaging because the food tastes nothing like the original.. far inferior...

The companies that spend a lot of money on psychology, design, marketing, and advertising do get it all back via the prices they charge the customer, so the customer ends up paying to be manipulated, not the company. Everybody who shops at AlDI knows the products are not identical to the branded ones - and they all can read the big label on the product. In addition, the branded companies themselves have always had spies and scientists. Nobody's developing anything n a vacuum. Imagine if every airplane manufacturer had to build planes that looked completely different from those of another. Imagine if every car manufacturer couldn't completely copy the design of every other car manufacturer (LOL)! And in the U.S., if there weren't generic prescription drugs, most people would have to sell their homes to live another month.
And fighting in court over colors and designs, when one label may resemble somewhat the label of another ,but is otherwise clearly identified as another product, is a frivolous waste of the court's resources. It's just a way for a big company to push smaller brands out of busines and jack up the price.
And I say all this as a guy whose father worked on some of the biggest advertising campaigns the world had ever seen in the 1960s. It just gets silly.
Take the branded product "A" and sell it expensively under the brand name in a store.
What does Aldi do? Aldi buys the same product, but the contents in its own Aldi packaging and at a much lower price.
What the customer often does not know is that it is the same product but in different packaging.
And one more thing: Aldi does not buy products with harmful contents.
They only buy products that meet European standards, where such ingredients are absolutely forbidden, and the customer realizes this.

I couldn’t agree more, and some of the branding is bang on to their “real” counterpart. My favourite beer they do is actually one of their own creations, 1066 project, it’s a little silver can with red text, keep an eye out next time you’re in there!

There are actually two Aldis operating worldwide, Aldi süd is the one in the US, but here in France we have Aldi nord, and yours is definitely the cheap knock-off, just look at that smug slanted A!
They are sister companies. Once founded by the Albrecht brothers who had a dispute in the 1960's about whether to sell cigarettes in their shops or not... They split up into Aldi Süd, only operating in the southern part of Germany and Aldi Nord in the north. When they expanded, they also agreed to never operate in the same countries. Aldi Nord can be found in France, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Poland,... Whereas Aldi Süd started its expansion way earlier and now covers markets like Australia, Britain, Ireland, Austria, Switzerland, etc - and even in China they have some shops in the big cities. The US is anexception of their "don't getting into each others way" policy, though. While Aldi Süd opened its first shops on the east cost and in the south, Aldi Nord bought the grocery chain "Trader Joe'" - but they kept the name and also the initial concept, so that does not really count.
Btw: In Germany most people consider Aldi Süd superior as their shops are a little nicer, more modern and their products and assortment - generally speaking - a tid bit better than Aldi Nord's.

I'm pretty sure that the Audi brand and the brand that they are copying is often made by exactly the same company that makes the original product. In other words There exactly the same thing with slightly different packaging. Coming out of the same Factory.

@@dizzy2020 I'm not one for marketing; plenty of Tesco Value products in my house. I just don't like the ethos of Aldi ripping off real brands and behaving like IP doesn't matter. For the pennies difference in price, it's not worth my time trying them out to see if I like them. I don't like the idea of them and that's enough for me.

Each to their own but Aldi's business practices are shady. My money goes to the brands that can compete on their own merits and who at least respect their competitors. Not the brand that acts like a cheap Chinese knockoff.
@@dizzy2020 I fundamentally disagree with that position. If you are a creator rather than a consumer you want some degree of protection for your work. If that gets undermined, then the incentive to innovate is taken away and no-one will do it, making us poorer overall. Innovation is hard work, building a brand is hard work. Why bother with all that when you can just wait for someone else to do it and simply copy their work? As a consumer, in the long run if you acquiesce to copycat products you will ultimately have no idea what you're buying and no assurance of quality.
Sure, in the short term you'll get a small win but it's myopic thinking. Just look at brand name products on ebay. You don't know whether you're getting a bargain, or asbestos lined copycat. Now imagine that but in every shop you go in. No thanks.
Not Aldi, but Lidl. Tried Freeway Cola (their copycat Coca Cola), and it tasted the same.

Aldi's brands are hit or miss, and overwhelmingly a miss for me. There's maybe a handful of things I would bother to get there, and that number dwindles every day.
there's nothing wrong with helping customers with cheaper bargains. there's nothing wrong with copying stuff. id rather go to aldi than coles or woolies because the latter two have skyrocketed their prices.
