Hi Gary Great idea one of your best vlogs. I marked it as follows 1.Trenchers 8.5 2.Harley’s 8 3.abbey wharf 7.5 4= Silver street 7 4= Magpie 7 Made me very hungry watching this one. Fantastic video Mate
Whenever we are at Whitby its always a trip into the Trenchers restaurant. Very good quality, nice surroundings and friendly staff. Cooked in dripping so this adds to the taste, the greasiness on the second one probably cooked in oil.
Gary, lovely video. Its oddly satisfying watching someone pick up a bit of battered fish, take a bite and seeing their reaction. Especially when they are as polite and reasonable as you are. I rated them as 9 - 7 - 8 - 8 - 7 Trenchers looked so good, but I don't think I'd be particularly disappointed with any of them if I'm honest. Glad you found your metal cutlery, the wooden stuff puts my teeth on edge. 😬

Good review Gary and good doing it outside with Whitby as the background. Trenchers -10 Hadleys-9 Magpie 7-1/2 Abbey Wharf- 7 Silver Street -6 Got to say Whitby is brimming with Fish &chips & scenery- what a place.
Got to say Trenches is the best. Magpie off season in the restaurant is great but don’t bother ordering anything with chips and no point even trying in the summer.
If I should ever return to England (visited in the 80’s), I would stay in that lovely town! The scenery was breathtaking! In my estimation, the first fish and chip place has my vote. What a super fun video Gary. So enjoyed it! Thank you
So glad to see you both visited Whitby and went to Hadley’s! My family visits Whitby every year and it’s our go to spot (after our previous closed) - Magpies has never seemed worth the queues, there’s so many other great choices in the town. Thanks for the video!
While vacationing in England, I would get fish and chips every day I could. From the Mid Lands all the way south to Plymouth. The best F&C I had was when we were on a canal boat and would stop (mooring) in the villages on the canals. It was an amazing time! I will return to England just for the F&C's (and to go to Greggs)😅
@feralkid1879 You know, I heard that "English food is bland" from everyone before my first trip to the UK. I also ate in pubs, breakfast shops, even hot food out of the grocery stores (Sainsbury, CoOp, etc.). I ate a lot of "traditional" British food and did not experience anything that was bland or strange.
I started watching Gary a few weeks ago and he's a really good channel! much better than other Uk food reviewers I like he's honesty keep up the good work Gary
Gary, five fish and chip shops in one video? As a Londoner stuck in the US this was torture to watch! There’s no decent fish and chips anywhere in the country. Here in Alabama all we have is Captain D’s feeble attempt. The only fish they have is pollock which looks like cod but has zero taste! Anyway, great vid!
Fantastic Gary. The best video you’ve ever done imo. Loved every single second of it! Me and the wife have a soft spot for Whitby so this was very nostalgic. Would love to see more similar videos in the future if your schedule permits.
Gary, you are once again bang on the money with your scoring of the 5 fish and chip shops you reviewed. We're lucky enough to be only 90 mins from Whitby, so we do visit regularly. Fish and chips are a 'must have' in Whitby, and we were convinced that the "only" place for this classic was The Magpie. Yes, they're fine, but in my opinion, slightly over rated. Then one visit, we tried Trenchers, and that is now the go to place for us. Good, honest and really helpful review for potential day trippers to the home of Dracula !
I had Trenchers as No. 1. Brilliant vlog Gary as always. Can't tell you how many times I've been close to Whitby but never stopped. It looked a stunning place.
Excellent video and review by Gary. Really clever idea to conduct 5 takeaways back to back in one video. Some other vlogers would make 5 videos out of this. Gary;s reviewing and detail is excellent , and agree with his results. The Haddock does look lovely , and some of the chips excellent. Must say most of the peas looked poor. Best to just have the fish and chips. Great stuff Gary as usual. Agree Whitby is such a super place , one of the most special places in the UK.
Great upload. Can't believe you went to Whitby and didn't have the COD. It's the best in the UK. Not a fan of skin-on the fish, it's a lazy practice and not necessary. Thanks for another corking video Gary. Lots of blessings.
Hi Gary great video. Fish and chips lookes great. Wish I could eat fish but I have an intolerance to fish😩 looking forward to your videos thank you Gary 👍👍👍
Trenchers is my go-to lunchtime restaurant whenever I'm in Whitby. Trenchers also has a branch in Whitley Bay, in the refurbished Spanish City building. It's a very classy joint, and each time I've been there (perhaps 7 or 8 times in the past four years) the service and the quality of the F&C dinners have been excellent.
Honestly your reviews are better presented and better made and put together than pretty much any TV restaurant review shows i have ever seen and I am not sure there is one in any european language I have not watched. So well done, my new favorite to watch during lunch and dinner. Love the longer format btw
Oh happy days, my favourite food, fish, chips and mushy peas. I love Whitby, been many times, glad to see the weather was behaving itself. The first lot of fish and chips for me, that haddock looked delicious. So jealous Gary, a dream come true, 5 lots of fish and chips to try.
That reminds me to tell my local chippy what size Haddock should be? 😂 Lovely brown chips..every time for me as I cook them in beef dripping🎉..Great vlog as always..hope ypu are enjoying your stay in Whitby, never been but it looks lovely🎉
I’m hungry now! I agree Trenchers is the best. Whenever I’m in Whitby ( not that often, but every few years) Trenchers is my go-to fish n chip shop. Gosh! I really,REALLY,want some fish n chips after watching this!😂
Gary this was an enjoyable video looks like you had a nice visit in Whitby. Trenchers was my number one pick as well. I hope you do more travel videos. Great job...........Cheers.
Amazing Gary and Camera Man 👏👏👏 Dont stay out late in case Count Drac will enjoy you for après Fish and Chips. How on earth can you do 5 fish and chips reviews in one morning? truly amazing again. ABBEY wins my vote only for the Haddock... Your scores are like a seeking a Girl Friend, the first one is always the best LOL
Another excellent review Gary. My scores were the same as yours. However I would never have mushy peas in any universe! I just don’t like them, or ordinary peas for that matter! What I love is that most of them do skin on fish which I absolutely love, but here in Orkney it’s not a thing and I miss it! Apart from my sisters pub where she’ll do it for anyone who asks. Interested in why you chose haddock, that’s all we ever get here and I miss the choice of cod or sole or plaice etc. I’d probably not visit Whitby in summer it’ll be absolutely heaving, you went at just the right time, it looks stunning.
Hello Gary, I love your show, your reviews are brilliant with the attention to detail. I also think this format of reviewing the best chip shops in a particular area in one video is a great idea. I am hoping you continue this trend!
Great video Gary,The Magpie depends on its past reputation for customers to flock there,Standards have dropped,Trenchers was easily the best and always cosistent, Great to watch your channel keep them coming.
Gary, u stepped up a level with this different style of review. I was blown away. You totally owned it. Knowledgeable, authoritative, questioning, confident. Not easy to pull off so congrats. How do u eat that much and judge fairly?

Really enjoyed this one, Gary! Great idea to try the 5 places over a couple of days, everything is still fresh in your mind so the reviews are spot on. The scores seemed to be pretty much in line with what I was thinking. Nice little chuckle with the 'I hope it's not 12 o' clock' line as well😂 Cracking stuff, now off to watch the next review! 👍🏼
Nice video again, Gary! ❤ Cameraman hasn't eaten this good in a long time!! don't be making a habit of this! 🤣🤣 I know you said the Magpie was cooked to order, but did you see them fry the chips then and there? my theory is: they're usually so packed with lines going around the block, that the chips that are being fried are served as soon as they're done cooking. They can barely cook them, as fast as they're going out again. It's almost an immediate turn around, and that adds an element of freshness you can't beat, I reckon. Whereas, when it's not jam-packed, they're probably not gonna blow you away because they've just been sat, even if just for a few secs/mins. It's like when you get McDonalds chips. If you've ever had them straight out the fryer, they are so hot/crispy/fluffy, it's night and day compared to the ones which have been stood on the rack keeping warm. When we were last there, we saw the lines at Trenchers and Magpies and just found somewhere else randomly. Tried the "Fish Box" just down the road, in and out in a few minutes, and had some really nice quality chips/pies, staff were nice too. Best chips I've ever had, were at the Lifeboat Bar in Scarborough, always had quality fish/chips from there without fail. (they've also got a funny sign inside which says the explanation for "Scraps" up north, and a long list of INCORRECT names other people use for them... 🤭😂)
Hi Andy. I've done worse tbh, mate. A seagull once sh*t into my F&C's on Seahouses seafront - I won't lie, I scooped 'em out with a serviette and carried on eating.
This is a fantastic down to earth channel. I am addicted! PS very informative too. I have been to that chipper in Whitby. It’s very good… I don’t think I have had bad experience for fish and chips in whitby.
Great video, as always, Gary. Glad to say I was one of the guys that recommended Trenchers to you. As regular visitors, to Whitby, it's my family's go to place for lunch. Keep up the good work, mate 👍
Just back from a week near Whitby and followed your recommendation of Trenchers Fish and Chips. Oh my goodness we were not disappointed , excellent chips, great mushy peas but the fish, we had cod, and the batter were on another level!! Thanks for the tips, keep up the good work. 😊😊
Great reviews. I can give a fairly informed appraisal, as I live 40 miles from Whitby and go there a lot. I've eaten at all 5 restaurants and I think your experience was pretty typical of all 5 takeaways. No 1 for me would be Trenchers. It's always consistently excellent in every way (though I have never tried their mushy peas, nor have I anywhere else. I prefer curry sauce). No 2 (by the tiniest margin) would be Hadleys. Never been disappointed in any way. The fish is always excellent, the batter delicious and the chips tasty. On some occasions, it's been better than Trenchers. No 3 would be Abbey Wharf. The fish and batter has always been spectacular, but the chips can be a bit variable. No 4 would be Silver Street. It's a lot cheaper and the portions are a bit smaller, but I've never had a greasy portion. I always ask him to rest it a few minutes, as I do everywhere. It's just round the corner from where I stay in Skinner Street, so it's convenient. But, if I can be bothered, I'll go to Trenchers or Hadleys. No 5 would be The Magpie. I've only had 2 takeaways (about 5 years ago, admittedly) and they were really ordinary. The fish was good (there's no excuse for it not to be when you're 50 m from where it's landed), but they couldn't get the batter right, the portion was a bit small and the chips were underdone. BUT - don't be put off eating INSIDE The Magpie Cafe. The standards are vastly higher and the fish and chips are amongst the very best I've ever tasted. And some of the seafood on sale is absolutely breathtakingly good. I'm popping up to Whitby tomorrow (if the weather's good) and I shall have to decide whether to eat a takeaway at Hadleys or Trenchers or splash some cash and eat in at The Magpie. What a nice dilemma.
Hey up mate I was surprised with silver street as been a few times and really liked it but last time was probably 7 years ago, always had skin on when I went
50m from where its landed?? I have lived in Whitby all my life, the fish is landed mainly in scotland and comes down by freezer trucks, check out the moor road at 4 in the morning, you would need a fleet of boats that would more than fill the harbour to supply all the fish consumed in whitby every 24 hours, so not 50metres , more like 400miles!!
@@tomegtonThat's not true, as a chef myself I can tell if fish has been frozen or not. There may be some fish and chip shops in Whitby that sell frozen fish but not the main ones.
@@RJAThere are no boats in whitby suitable to catch cod/haddock , only shellfish, there is a column of artic reefer trucks travel from peterhead during the night to supply Whitby, I see them every morning, maybe you can tell me which boats land enough fish in Whitby??
I noticed at least a couple of the haddock were defo overcooked, flakes looked dry and rough rather than smooth and glistening. Another awesome post Gary👍
Great review again Gary 👍🏾 Some great fish meals there. Personally I always like skin on as you can tell what fish you are getting. The secret to getting the excellent batters you got apart from Magpies is leaving lumps in the batter and not over beating it. When the fish cooks the lumps explode giving that lovely crispy curls on the fish. Look like Magpies were over zealous with the mixing 😊 As for chips, I love those crispy bits that you didn’t like 😂
Gary, I think Trenchers is the best and I agree with your rating. The others.....I actually rated a half a point below what you gave them. I wasn't very impressed. Great idea to go to 5 shops, order that exact same thing....and takeout so there is no comparing for the interior of the store/service....just the food. Super review!

There’s nothing better than some excellently cooked fish and chips. A real morale booster.
👍
Thank you very kind 👍
Try The Fishermans Wife...its really good..
Great vid Gary, love the fact that you have compiled all the chip shops on one shoot it’s great for us to make our mind up with what’s on offer in the town thanks buddy.
Thank you for watching and commenting that’s really important to make it worthwhile 👍
Definately like the presentation of the 1st one! Makes me feel very hungry looking at these fish 🐟 and chips 🍟 😋
On this occasion, I think trenches wins it Helen❤️🌹
@@GaryEats that's great Gary
On a visit to Whitby next week! Thanks Gary, couldn't have timed it better!

Best review I’ve watched from anyone, very fair from a very nice guy. Thanks for sharing.
That’s very kind Ray thank you
Yes Gary the 1st one got my top score. You scored everything properly. Great review once again.
Thank you John I agree completely
Hi Gary
Great idea one of your best vlogs. I marked it as follows
1.Trenchers 8.5
2.Harley’s 8
3.abbey wharf 7.5
4= Silver street 7
4= Magpie 7
Made me very hungry watching this one. Fantastic video Mate
Thank you Tony and appreciate you scoring thanks again 👍
Trenchers first one the best by a mile
This is why this channel trumps any in the UK brilliant Gary yet again.
That’s so very kind thank you
Or anywhere! Agree 100% 👍
Whenever we are at Whitby its always a trip into the Trenchers restaurant. Very good quality, nice surroundings and friendly staff. Cooked in dripping so this adds to the taste, the greasiness on the second one probably cooked in oil.
Couldn't agree more!
I did Hugh and only three people out of nearly 2000 noticed lol 😂 really appreciate you scoring and commenting, have a great week 👍
@@GaryEats You're welcome, love watching your videos, so refreshing to see honest, straight forward and fair reviews.
By the number of subscribers you're gaining I think I'm not alone in thinking this.
Good review Gary and good doing it outside with Whitby as the background.
Trenchers -10
Hadleys-9
Magpie 7-1/2
Abbey Wharf- 7
Silver Street -6
Got to say Whitby is brimming with Fish &chips & scenery- what a place.
Unbelievable town with lovely people thanks for scoring really appreciated 👍
Got to say Trenches is the best. Magpie off season in the restaurant is great but don’t bother ordering anything with chips and no point even trying in the summer.
I think Gary is a fantastic critic. 100% straight and honest, presented in a charming and informed manner. He gets a 10/10.😀
That’s really kind and appreciated Jason thank you
Im a Southern girl but have visited Trenchers and it was amazing, great video and love toue enthusiasm, and good old camera man got food 😊
He was well fed Debbie but he doesn’t want fish and chips for a while lol 😂
If I should ever return to England (visited in the 80’s), I would stay in that lovely town! The scenery was breathtaking! In my estimation, the first fish and chip place has my vote. What a super fun video Gary. So enjoyed it! Thank you
You have to Sandria it’s beautiful and as always thank you x
So glad to see you both visited Whitby and went to Hadley’s! My family visits Whitby every year and it’s our go to spot (after our previous closed) - Magpies has never seemed worth the queues, there’s so many other great choices in the town. Thanks for the video!
I appreciate you commenting Emma and Hadley’s is really great 👍
While vacationing in England, I would get fish and chips every day I could.
Enjoy your trip!
I started watching Gary a few weeks ago and he's a really good channel! much better than other Uk food reviewers I like he's honesty keep up the good work Gary
I really appreciate you’re lovely comment that you very much 👍
Gary, five fish and chip shops in one video? As a Londoner stuck in the US this was torture to watch! There’s no decent fish and chips anywhere in the country. Here in Alabama all we have is Captain D’s feeble attempt. The only fish they have is pollock which looks like cod but has zero taste!
Anyway, great vid!
So sorry my friend lol
Fantastic Gary. The best video you’ve ever done imo. Loved every single second of it! Me and the wife have a soft spot for Whitby so this was very nostalgic. Would love to see more similar videos in the future if your schedule permits.
Very kind Matty I will be doing more of this type of video in the future 👍
Gary, you are once again bang on the money with your scoring of the 5 fish and chip shops you reviewed. We're lucky enough to be only 90 mins from Whitby, so we do visit regularly. Fish and chips are a 'must have' in Whitby, and we were convinced that the "only" place for this classic was The Magpie. Yes, they're fine, but in my opinion, slightly over rated. Then one visit, we tried Trenchers, and that is now the go to place for us. Good, honest and really helpful review for potential day trippers to the home of Dracula !
Really appreciate that Mike. Thank you!
Another great review.
You, sir, are becoming a national icon when it comes to food reviews and dedication
That’s very very kind thank you ☺️
I agree.
I had Trenchers as No. 1. Brilliant vlog Gary as always. Can't tell you how many times I've been close to Whitby but never stopped. It looked a stunning place.
Phillip you have to visit a beautiful town
Excellent video and review by Gary. Really clever idea to conduct 5 takeaways back to back in one video. Some other vlogers would make 5 videos out of this. Gary;s reviewing and detail is excellent , and agree with his results. The Haddock does look lovely , and some of the chips excellent. Must say most of the peas looked poor. Best to just have the fish and chips. Great stuff Gary as usual. Agree Whitby is such a super place , one of the most special places in the UK.
I really appreciate you lovely comment thank you very much 👍
Great upload. Can't believe you went to Whitby and didn't have the COD. It's the best in the UK. Not a fan of skin-on the fish, it's a lazy practice and not necessary. Thanks for another corking video Gary. Lots of blessings.
Very kind thank you
Haddock is the best tasting fish by far. Very rarely get Cod in the North.
@@kevindenyer428 Taste is subjective, however, i live in the north and you can get cod everywhere. Whitby is famous for it. You're talking nonsense.
Leaving the skin on improves the flavour, similar to cooking meat on the bone. Lazy!?!🤨 Idiot.
Haddock is the fish of the north and cod is the fish of the south. I have the haddock purely because of my roots.
Trenchers is great every time.
Awesome video Gary.
Thank you it was the best
Hi Gary great video. Fish and chips lookes great. Wish I could eat fish but I have an intolerance to fish😩 looking forward to your videos thank you Gary 👍👍👍
Thanks so much Helen
Trenchers looked incredible, will be trying it next time we're in Whitby
That is very kind to say and really really appreciated thank you very very much
Chips from Trenchers, fish from Abbey Wharf and mushy peas from Magpie. That’s a 10 😀
That’s the way to do it lol 😂

Oh happy days, my favourite food, fish, chips and mushy peas. I love Whitby, been many times, glad to see the weather was behaving itself. The first lot of fish and chips for me, that haddock looked delicious. So jealous Gary, a dream come true, 5 lots of fish and chips to try.

Your scores are like a seeking a Girl Friend, the first one is always the best LOL
lol very funny 😂😂😂
Best video so far, and nothing better than Yorkshire fish and chips. Great stuff.
Thank you Lee 👍
I chose haddock for a change on this one the town is so nice 👌
As that infamous bit of graffiti said, give peas a chance! 😅
Well delivered Gary top marks for covering 5 outlets plus your own cutlery ❤❤
Really appreciate that comment Andrew thank you 🤩
Hello Gary, I love your show, your reviews are brilliant with the attention to detail. I also think this format of reviewing the best chip shops in a particular area in one video is a great idea. I am hoping you continue this trend!
That’s very kind thank you, it makes all the hard work worthwhile
Great video Gary,The Magpie depends on its past reputation for customers to flock there,Standards have dropped,Trenchers was easily the best and always cosistent, Great to watch your channel keep them coming.

Great idea to try the 5 places over a couple of days, everything is still fresh in your mind so the reviews are spot on. The scores seemed to be pretty much in line with what I was thinking.

I've never clicked on a new video so quickly in my life. Let's havva go and watch it 😄❤
Nice video again, Gary! ❤ Cameraman hasn't eaten this good in a long time!! don't be making a habit of this! 🤣🤣
I know you said the Magpie was cooked to order, but did you see them fry the chips then and there? my theory is: they're usually so packed with lines going around the block, that the chips that are being fried are served as soon as they're done cooking.
lol thank you very much
Can't believe you put the carton of peas on the wall then back on the fish ! Handy review all the same, going up there later in the year.
My mistake Andy sorry 😔

Awesome! Thank you!

Just back from a week near Whitby and followed your recommendation of Trenchers Fish and Chips. Oh my goodness we were not disappointed , excellent chips, great mushy peas but the fish, we had cod, and the batter were on another level!! Thanks for the tips, keep up the good work. 😊😊
That is absolutely fantastic to hear, Neil. Thank you very much for letting me know.
@@tomegton hey up mate was told it came from Scotland by a chippy owner in Whitby about ten years ago
Fantastic vlog Gary, cheers 😊Whitby and that coastline is wonderful

Very kind Mark and regards to you and your wife
Great review again Gary 👍🏾
Some great fish meals there. Personally I always like skin on as you can tell what fish you are getting. The secret to getting the excellent batters you got apart from Magpies is leaving lumps in the batter and not over beating it. When the fish cooks the lumps explode giving that lovely crispy curls on the fish. Look like Magpies were over zealous with the mixing 😊
As for chips, I love those crispy bits that you didn’t like 😂
Thank you, I don’t mind as long as it’s quality which every place had 👍
Leaving lumps in the batter?? Well I would never had dared, for sure... but I'll sure give it a try next time, thank you!
