      Fresh water vet but a rookie to salt water. Started with dry rock and added bacteria. I'm now in week 3 and my tank is hazy. This is a good thing and I should do nothing and let it run its course? It seems like when I added the fuge system it started.

      @Lee McDabney youre so wrong... and a quick google search will show you that. Yes it does take oxygen out of the water but all you have to do is point some powerheads to the surface and problem solved. Any time you add rock or fish you have a good chance to go through it. Ammonia does not spike unless youre experiencing a tank crash because you have way more proteins in the water than the bacteria can handle. As long as you take things at a decent pace, that should never be a problem

    Thank you for your advice. Fortunately my son saved my fish from a bacteria bloom. I was way too scared to do this. He used parts out of my goldfish tank and a special bubble blowy thing in order to create beneficial bacteria. What could have took months took hrs and saved my tank. I was stupid and did a full water change and filter clean. Xxx

    What do you do when you have a cloudy slime/algae buildup on the walls of the tank? I just started to cycle a ten gal nano reef nothing is in the tank I got living rocks all of which had no pests. I also got some seachem stability and put in the recommended amount to allow for the bio filter to start but this film of cloudy slime keeps building up greatly is that bacteria bloom? Should I leave it and let it works it self out? Or should I be worried and change out all the water?
    I did 25%wtaer change and scrubbed down the walls but now the tank is really cloudy

I have 4 Hydra 52's it's a 36" deep tank, 2 MP40's and a DCT-15000 running so far. It's holding 75 degrees without any help but the bottom of the cabinet is still open as we haven't fabricated the doors yet and it's a picture framed tank so they have to match the kitchen cabinets per the wife.

    • @sinatra617

      If it's been up and running for 3 years. I would put some clarity I'm the water for 24 hours then shut the filter or filters off, change the filter pads. Dump out any water in the filter or filters and see what it looks like the next day. You can find clarity in almost any pet store if not you can find it online. If that dont fix the problem I would look deeper into it.

    • @Alexandra-sd4yy
      @Alexandra-sd4yy 4 года назад

      @@sinatra617 i used clarity yesterday and today I cleaned the filter. I also put some gauze around the sponge but the water is still cloudy:( I usually have a plant in my aquarium but my fish ate it...I don't think is that...is it? The type of plant I use for my aquarium is Cabomba. I clean the tank glass very carefully because I get a lot of algae. Also, when I bought the last plant, a little bonus came with it: three little snails but I bought the plant a month ago or more so the snails should't be the problem...I don't know what to do, it looks annoying, like a forgotten tank

    • @sinatra617
      @sinatra617 4 года назад

      @@Alexandra-sd4yy what color is the cloud is it white, green or yellowish brown? Have you tested your ammonia and nitrite levels? All fish and the 3 snails are accounted for and alive? Do you rinse your filters with tap water.? If you do you could have killed all your good bacteria and you may have to cycle your tank all over again. Hopefully that's not the case. You've had the tank up for 3 years so I'm gonna assume you have a syphon vac. Id vac the top layer of substrate to get all the un eaten food and poop out.. if you over feed fish they poop more and the food that isnt eating builds up over time. It could be a few different issues. That's why I'm asking what color it is. I would definitely do a 30% water change right after testing for ammonia and nitrite. What I will say is dont get crazy and start putting all kinds of medication in the water. I've had this happen more then a few times and most of the time time was the best method as long as it's not the nutrients in the tank. If you can answer the questions I've asked it would help me alot. Color of water? How much you feed them and how often?

    • @Alexandra-sd4yy
      @Alexandra-sd4yy 4 года назад

      @@sinatra617 thank you so much for your interest in helping me!! it means a lot! The color was yellow past week before I did the water change. Now is more white. It possibly was white all the time but got the yellow aspect because of algae. I keep guppies and they are giving birth more and more and my family keeps telling me to give them more food since they are so many and maybe I overdosed the food. I started giving them smaller amount of food but I don't think this is the problem since I used an automatic feeder that gave them food 3 times a day and I didn't have this problem back then. There can be so many causes:(( I will have to get an ammonia test but the water I use is drinkable and has perfect levels, it is filtrated, we took a sample for testing and the results are perfect.

    • @sinatra617
      @sinatra617 4 года назад

      @@Alexandra-sd4yy 3 times a day is absolutely waaaaay to much food to be feeding them. The tank is probably over populated cz of all the fry the guppies are having. Your biological filtration probably cant keep up with the ammonia load the fish are causing. I would bet money it's your nutrient levels so dont waste your money on a tester but they are good to have around. The issue you're having was never a problem cz your biological filtration wasn't being over worked. Now that there are a bunch of fish cz they keep having fry along with you feeding them 3 times a day its 100% being over worked Feed them once a day. When you feed them sprinkle a little in and watch them eat it. If they consume it all give them a little more. Do this until you start seeing them not really care about the food. When u see this stop feeding them. For the next week I wouldn't feed them anything. Dont worry you have been feeding them like pigs so dont worry they wont starve. What I would do is get some water conditioner and do a 30 percent water change every other day for a week (3 20% water changes) I would get rid of the automatic feeder as well. I know its convenient but it also keeps us out of touch with our tank. Its happened to me before so you're not alone. What we are doing here by not feeding them for a week is.....1 no food in the tank so it wont break down into nutrients and 2 the fish wont be pooping. This will give your filtration a break and time to catch up. I highly recommend you find a new home for some of the fish. For every one fish u have takes 2 gallons of water so if you have a 10 gallon tank the max amount of fish u wanna keep is 5. You can get away with more but that's determined on how good your biological and other forms of filtration is. I also highly recommend you get the water conditioner and use it as directed when doing your water change. You may even wanna look into getting a bottle of beneficial bacteria to help the population of the beneficial bacteria. Please let me know how the tank is doing. Once again please dont worry about not feeding the fish they wont die from not eating they are likely to die from the ammonia in the water. Depending upon how much money you wanna spend a bottle of ammo-lock will help the little guys. It will help the fish deal with the ammonia. It dont take the ammonia out but it will help the little guys gills from burning up. After each water change use the water conditioner and the ammo lock if you get it after each water change. You should start seeing improvements around day 4. I used to take my extra fish I had from so many births to my local mom and pop fish store for store credit. You could even make some money and sell some on the apps offer up or let it go.
