Can you imagine the person that invented these things? Ive always been amazed by the creativity in these complex machines with thousands of tiny little moving parts.
I’m at court out of state thinking about chasing my dream fashion. Instead of stressing I bumped into your channel and you help me finish a blank spot in my dream💪🏾💯 no cap we locked in🔐
You are by far the best tutor! Clear and close ups. I watch so many different instructors who think they are clear but forget that certain parts are so iffy. Especially when it comes to the mechanical parts. I.E. threading underneath items.Thank you for being you.
Thank you, thank you . I’m 86 and could not figure out how to thread my serger. Your instructions are so clear that I did not have a problem and finally I can use my serger. 🙏😊🙏😊
Thanks! This video was so helpful. A friend gave me an old serger and I had a really hard time figuring out how to thread it until I watched your video.
Thank you so much for the tutorial, I was just gifted a serger and I've never used one in my life. Your instructions were so easy, and I'm not intimidated to sew with mine now haha.
I just watched your "Introduction to Tock Custom" video that you did for your anniversary. I really enjoyed your story, and I noticed that you mentioned that you "want to help people" so many times in the video, that I noticed it as a theme in your general being and outlook on life. It only took me wathcing 2 of your videos for me to decide to subscribe. You are an EXCELLENT teacher and seem a very genuine person. I am thankful that there are people like you that work in the mental health field, I wish my son had met someone like you that really cares. I am sure you have helped a lot of people in that arena also. Congratulations on ALL of your succes and I am believing it will continue for you.
OMG... I just got mine today , oh boy I was scared and was looking around who can help me thank goodness you came along and I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your help, YOU ARE THE BEST .... THANK YOU 😊
First of all... thanks for the great video!!!! 😎 secondly, Mother use to professionally sew and she used both of her machines ALOT!!! 😱I never built up my confidence or made the time to practice even though she tried to show me at times...😞now that she is no longer here... I wanted to dust off my sewing machine and serger THIS YEAR...on Feb 2, 2020, and try to give it a go to make her proud as she watches over me from above.🤗❤️🥰 And lastly, sir, forget your stickers...shoutout to that hair care regimen!!! Best brushed hair ever!!!😂 Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for the thoughtful comment! I hope that you enjoy getting into sewing, and that you feel the love of your mother as you start creating new projects
I really appreciate your no-nonsense, relaxed approach to sewing and serging. I wish this video had been around when I got my serger. I let it set in the box for a while because I was so nervous. Then one day I got the manual, read through the threading instructions and decided I could do it - I just had to actually sit down and do it. And yes, the first few times it can seem intimidating, but it is possible and really not so scary.
I know what you mean - back when I learned, there weren't videos like this. Really helps to share this information in a precise and simplified way to help people get started :) Thanks for watching, hope you're having a terrific week!
Excellent tutorial and convinced me to buy the exact same serger for my personal and business needs. I really enjoy your tutorials because you are very detailed in each step. Learning so much from your channel. Keep up the great work.
Great job. Thanks so much for this. You have a great voice too....devoid of creakiness. Good camera angles too. I don't even have a serger yet so I don't know why I'm watching this but I am learning to sew. :D
After a bit of research I decided on getting this machine. Unfortunately it’s out of stock everywhere, but soon as it’s available I’ll be able to make an attempt at not losing my mind trying to thread it! Haha
Yeah it s crazy hard to find machines at the moment. I just upgraded to the entry level Brother serger and I LOVE it! I'll be doing a video on that soon for sure. Keep in mind, you don't really "need" a serger unless you plan on selling products or competing in cosplay or fashion shows. You can certainly start sewing without a serger until you want to add more polish to your projects
I was wondering what a Serger Overlock machine was and now I know what it is and that machine does a great job too. Now I know, but I hope that I won't have to do that work though unless I can do similar work with my regular machine. I saw the work on some pants I have and now know what procedure the manufacturer did during the production process. Thanks for showing us how this is done using your machine.
Yep, sergers are great - you really only need one if you plan to start selling your work or taking commissions though. If you're just making clothing for yourself, you really don't need this machine since few people will see the inside seams :)
Ok dude, third time watching this video beginning to end. Just ordered one on Amazon. Still scares the crap out of me. Thank you so much for posting. Certain that I will watch this again.
lol happy to help buddy, I'm planning to make another "How to use a Serger video" soon to be even more clear with better lighting and camera work. Once you get it working, you'll LOVE it!
The tweezer part made me think DUH. Even just to thread a needle on a regular machine. I have a thousand tweezers and forceps and never occurred to me!
Thank you thank you thank you!! I have this serger and I did thread it once when I first got it. I haven’t used it since but am going to be hemming some pants and needed to change the threat to just black. So very helpful
Omg! I've had my serger for almost a year and never used it because it scared me. Now, I'm not sure why (it's probably the voice though) it does not scare me anymore. In fact, I'm going to try and make a small project this week-end because of your video XD Thx a lot!
Always been afraid to tackle a serger but came across on recently to check out for the thrift store for a dog rescue. Usually just do the many sewing machines that are donated. I've been watching every video I can find on threading it and learn something new every time. So far I don't have it just right but will keep trying cause I'll probably be the one to buy it from them once I get it perfect. thx
Excellent demo! I have a Brothers and thankful for the diagrams. I was hoping to see different techniques in using the serger. Right now I am only using it to finish the fray materials on bags.
Happy to help! I just got a Brother serger as well, setup is pretty much the same, but I'd like to shoot a video with that as well. Hope you're enjoying your projects this week!
I have a serger just like urs! at first it took me over 20 mins to thread it... but after using 2 tweezers and a ton of practice, I can thread it in a fraction of the time.
Omg!!! You are sooo awesome!!! I love everything about this video!!! Thank you soooooo much!! Following 2022!💃🏽new to sewing 🧵 You are truly making this soo much easier for me today!!! I feel like a kid in the candy store!!!🤣😂
Thank you! Great tutorial! Looking to buy a serger (had no idea how they worked) and checking out you tube to find answers. Love your speed of teaching.
Thank you so much for watching! I actually just shot a new serger video today, it's another beginner video with a different serger. I think now it's time to show people some projects you can do with it :) Thanks for the recommendation!
I've been playing wih a serger in a sewing class, and I love it:). Looks intimidating to thread. Thanks for showing this...will play with someone else's machine😀
Thank you so much. I have a different brand that was given to me. After I realized I had one of the threads thread wrong and fixed it I still couldn't get it to sew without a lot of the thread sewing beyond the fabric. After watching you I realized that I didn't have the pressure foot down. LOL My regular sewing machine does it for me so I totally forgot that some machines are manual. LOL
lol, yeah that would create problems. Actually with both of my sergers, I just keep the presser foot down at all times, the feed dogs will bring the fabric in so I don't need to worry about that. You can always raise it if you need to, but it hasn't been an issue for me. Thanks for watching :D
Two details to add: Cover the cones with spool socks to keep the thread from tangling. Also, cutting the chain right at the fabric will lead to unraveling unless you sew over it. When serging a hem, I'll use the end of the chain to go over the start, and finish by creating about 6" of chain. Then cut about 2" from the fabric, gently pull the loops straight, and tie a knot in the chain as close to the fabric as possible before cutting the rest off.
Good call on both points. Generally the seams I overlock get sewn into seams between panels in garment construction, so there is no threat of frayed overlock threads, and everything turns out looking very polished on the inside. In any other situation where it would be visible, I'd tie off the ends like you and put a drop of Fray Check on it. I appreciate your comments by the way, you certainly know your sewing techniques!
Beginner here, and a coworker just offered to give a serger to me. I have not even fired up the Singer 4411 that I got for Christmas yet. Should I even touch the serger right now or just wait? I have sewing experience, but from 20 years ago when I was a teen. I assume that I should just focus on the Sewing machine right now. My plan is to make tool rolls, tool bags, and organizers. Btw, I am going to get the serger either way, as it comes with other supplies and I am a hoarder of tools, machines, and equipment.
@@TockCustom I watched a number of videos and then got my new machine out of the box. I'd also read the manual and two books on using sergers. I found that it was already threaded (as I gather most are), but the threads were all tangled and I had to redo all the threading. Your video was the one thing that got me through. I then forgot to turn up the tensions before trying to make a thread chain, so it all churned up again and I had to thread it again! I then felt delighted I had managed to thread it twice myself, and quite glad really that I hadn't managed to put that off till another day by just pulling through. But it was your video that made the difference to me, so thanks loads :)
Excellent!! I'm actually planning another serger video with a different machine. I wanted to do a better video with better lighting and colored thread for each cone. Keep your eyes open for that if you need more support soon :)
Wow, I just found you and love your videos! I just got my very first serger and have much to learn. Thank you for being so fabulous and I look forward to learning more from you!
I just started sewing, and recently purchased the same serger you have, can you make a video in regards to the tension? Thank you. I love watching your videos, they are really informative!
This is a great entry level overlock machine for sure - I had it for many years before upgrading. Tension wise, I usually keep all dials at 4. If I notice a particular thread being a bit loose, I'll increase it slightly, but typically you want to keep them all pretty close to each other. Hope you enjoy all your projects this spring!
love this video. Wondering if you could do a video on seam repairs. For example, when my shirts come with 4 tags attached inside the side seam, I of course want to take them out but no matter how I do it I end up with a hole in the seam where the tags were. So I'd like to use a serger to repair it properly, instead of do the whole seam again.. I found a couple videos on it but they weren't the best, especially on how to clean up the ends of the repair.
I could probably do that, it's super easy. Just use a seam ripper where the tags are, pull the tags out, do a straight stitch on the inside seam, and then serge it clean. That might be all you need to know :)
Why did I think you had a Brother serger? Got my Brother Strong and Tough serger this week. To go with my Strong and Tough sewing machine and because I absolutely had to have a serger that came with the extension table. Not having one included with the ST150HDH was a disappointment. I just got the extension table for my sewing machine this week, so all is well now. Must go read the manual for my new serger. Took it out of the box, but have been reorganizing my sewing area. New shelves coming tomorrow so I expect to serge this week.
Thank you so much! It was tough setting up! But this helped. Only tip I would give is it was kinda hard to see the black thread (maybe a brighter color, and more light next time) other than that 👍🏼 it was good
Great video, and very informative. My only suggestion would be to use a thread that is more easily visible. Some of the steps were really hard to see what was going on. I love it!
I use four different color thread cones on my serger. Only the left-most one shows anyway, and having different thread colors lets me more easily see which one I'm having trouble with.
My 434 Singer serger has been used for over 40 years and I still dread any time I need to change colors. I have hoped that someone would have found an improved technique for threading. False hope! Great machine but one of the bigger stressers in my sewing room.
I guess there is a way to tie new thread cones to your thread while its threaded to change colors without re-threading from scratch - but I haven't gotten it to work yet. I should do some tests for a new video soon :)
Omg I just got a new Brother Serger and I absolutely LOVE it! I'm not used to a machine being so reliable, I haven't had to re-thread it since I got it, which is soooooo amazing!
@@TockCustom This is promising, thanks! I bought this Brother serger last year and am still too scared to thread it haha I'm going to try to be brave...soon
i would love to get some ideas of how to use/alter old clothes and create something new. E.g. turn an old cashmere or wool sweater into gloves, or use lighter fabric for the arms and take an old sweater for the torso, i am curious about learning to reuse old clothes and fabric and adding some funk to them.
Took me 5 hours to thread my old SewLand overlocker🤣 mine doesn’t appear to open up like yours had so I was working through the tiny gap where the foot is😅
Hey! I haven't heard from you in a while :) The machine you have sounds like a nightmare lol, hope you got it figured out. Hope you're doing excellent, do something special for yourself this weekend
I saw in another video you have a 'Husky' serger also. Maybe a few vid's on using that one? I find that even though it automatically sets the tension for your material, I always have to really tighten the needle thread in order to not see the stitches when opened,(???) Thanks
To be honest I really don't like that serger, it was too unreliable. I much prefer my new Brother Serger that I just got. This singer was a great unit too!
I’m brand new to sewing, and my spouse bought me a serger second hand (brand new, only used once). Should we have purchased something else for me to start with instead since I’ve never sewn before? Your video helped a lot with explaining how to thread but do I need to do an overlook stitch for every project?
Overlock machines are kind of "addons" to a typical sewing space. You can create some projects with a serger alone, but most projects will require that you sew with a traditional sewing machine first, and then serge the seams. Hopefully that makes sense. At least you wont have to buy a serger after you get your first sewing machine!!
Great tutorial! I am new to sewing and love your videos!! Quick question, where do you get your fabric from? The pants you show at the end as an example is a great pattern. Thanks again for the videos, I appreciate you!!
Thank you so much for watching! I get most of my fabric from local Joann Fabrics, or from Fabric.com There's so many great fabrics out there, hope you find some cool material to work with!
Omg I'm going though old comments and just came across yours. What are the odds I'd end up being pair with you for a secret santa months later lol. Hope you're doing amazing my friend!
Hi. I'm thankful for you. I have sewn little projects with an old cheap machine but now I would like to go to a "higher level" just a little more than beginner. But also I would like to do embroidery. I looked to different Brothers machines. Which one do you suggest for a intermediate that combines sewing, embroidery and quilting if possible but not really a decision changer. Do you use the SE400 for your daily use or which one?
I love my SE-400 for sewing a small embroidery jobs. Brother has a newer model now (Brother SE-600 and 625) for sewing/embroidery combo machines, and they no longer manufacture the SE-400. I still use it pretty much every day, and then I use my Heavy Duty ST150HDH for topstitching and thicker projects. Hope this helps!! Thanks for watching :)
I'd love to do a whole video on rolled hem feet, and other cool presser feet! Getting caught up with some other projects at the moment, and I'll do this at some point soon :)
Awesome video! I have a serger but am intimidated by it lol! New to your channel, quick question. Have you done any troubleshooting videos for sergers? I have a really hard time with changing tension between fabric weights when I finish a project and start another...
Thank you for watching! I haven't done anything with trouble shooting sergers yet, they either seem to be threaded correctly and work properly - or they aren't threaded properly and don't work. I'm planning to shoot a new video today using another serger actually. Wanted to redo this video with better lighting, colored thread, and more details. Hope it helps if you still struggle with your machine. Otherwise I hope you're making some great stuff already :)
Hi! I love your videos and your style. I started trying to teach myself to sew "via RUclips" a few months ago (it started as a wild hair + Pandemic boredom, and the sewing bug seems to have stuck) , and yours are probably my fave videos. I have a question I haven't seen demo'd anywhere yet (and maybe it's lack of the right verbiage to search), but , how does one get a seam going in a serger . . . particularly on a blind hem , when the fabric is already sewn in a loop (e.g. a t-shirt bottom hem) ?? I have the same machines you do (purely by my good luck), and would LOVE any tips yo have to help me in this area. so far , I just kind of "start" in the middle and hope the knife figures it out . . .but that's a bit hit and miss. Thanks again for you FAB videos! Sybil
How much of a flap do you leave for these inner serged seams? For example, I have a curved inner seam of a tunic top that is 5/8". I serged it, but it is still 5/8" and is rather "flappy." It looks pretty good, but would you recommend just running it through a second time right up against the outer seam? I am just nervous because it is curved and feeding it through is tricky.
Loved your threading on the Serger machine, great job; However, I am doing the exact same way threading and my machine sounds like an accordion - I'm afraid I'm going to break it??? Help, what am i doing wrong?????
Hmmmm... This type of machine normally sounds much different than a sewing machine. Almost like a harmonica as its running slowly. You might be in good shape already, I say just go for it and see how it looks when it's done. If you hear any grinding or crunching sounds... please stop though lol
I had no idea about the Serger/Overlock machine, wonderful video and expert guidance on this application. I am looking forward to using one in the future.
I just got my first serger and it is the same one you have and I'm trying to figure what I need to set these to use it on faux fur for cosplay. Any thing will help thanks
@@TockCustom Could you do a video on alternatives to serging (if you don't have the machine, but want that clean finish)? you touch on other ways in other videos.
Hi Tock, thanks for posting this. You've a great teaching style and I learned some useful tips. Just wondered if you plan to do any clothing manufacturing videos? I have the same brother embroidery/sewing machine you demo'd, aren't they the best? Never lets me down, always a great result. Glad to see more guys involved in sewing too, it's really chilling. Greetings from North Wales UK. :-)

That's super-helpful, Tock - thank you! I've just bought a Singer serger - different model, but I'm sure it's pretty similar.
For sure, most sergers thread in a similar way - I have another video of a different machine if you need a different angle. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your videos I've learned a lot, I wish you would've added clipping the threads to pull through the machine to thread it makes it faster
You're very welcome! The reason I didn't include that idea is because I can never get it to work properly lol.
Seriously just solved my headache! Thank you so much 😀
Thank you for putting this up. Serging now looks way less intimidating!
Excellent!! I'm actually planning another serger video with a different machine. I wanted to do a better video with better lighting and colored thread for each cone. Keep your eyes open for that if you need more support soon :)
@@TockCustom I definitely will! :)
As always, love your videos. Don't have a surger but great info for the future if I get one.
Thanks a ton for watching! Hope this helps if you ever need it.
love this video.
You make things APPEAR to be so easy. Definitely a subscriber
lol, I cant help it. Practice makes everything easy! Sewing is great though, nothing to be afraid of.
Great job. The most important part, I learned something.
Excellent! Very happy to help - thank you so much for watching :)
New shelves coming tomorrow so I expect to serge this week.
thank you for sharing your tutorials are all ways great and so detailed and very easy to follow. thanks again. 😁
I really appreciate you watching, thanks so much for the positive feedback :) Hope you're doing excellent!
I love it!
Yeah for sure dude, I think I might do this since a few people have asked. Thanks!
I use four different color thread cones on my serger. Only the left-most one shows anyway, and having different thread colors lets me more easily see which one I'm having trouble with.
It will help me a lot if it has light shining in the area, however, I still think your video is great anyway!
I love your videos. Would you make a sew along for a pair of jeans? Also, where do you find your jeans material? Thank you for making the videos.
Thanks, really useful video.
Can you tell us about cover stitching please?
My 434 Singer serger has been used for over 40 years and I still dread any time I need to change colors. I have hoped that someone would have found an improved technique for threading. False hope! Great machine but one of the bigger stressers in my sewing room.
I guess there is a way to tie new thread cones to your thread while its threaded to change colors without re-threading from scratch - but I haven't gotten it to work yet. I should do some tests for a new video soon :)
This is the next machine I am saving for! What do you think about the Brother serger 1634D
Thank you so much! You make it seem really easy. Now to try…
You can do it! Hope this helps
Where did he go? No new videos in a year. He’s such a great teacher.
i would love to get some ideas of how to use/alter old clothes and create something new. E.g. turn an old cashmere or wool sweater into gloves, or use lighter fabric for the arms and take an old sweater for the torso, i am curious about learning to reuse old clothes and fabric and adding some funk to them.
Took me 5 hours to thread my old SewLand overlocker🤣 mine doesn’t appear to open up like yours had so I was working through the tiny gap where the foot is😅
Hey! I haven't heard from you in a while :)
The machine you have sounds like a nightmare lol, hope you got it figured out.
Hope you're doing excellent, do something special for yourself this weekend
wow!those pants are dope I just picked up one of these might have to see it in person being done do you still have yours?
Yeeez! One has to practically be a mechanic to thread one of these contraptions! 😂
6hrs. and 27 minutes later I've finally got my serger threaded up and good to go! 😅
Serger Jesus gathers you into his arms, smoothes your edges , and makes you more presentable.
May all your seams be blessed
I saw in another video you have a 'Husky' serger also. Maybe a few vid's on using that one? I find that even though it automatically sets the tension for your material, I always have to really tighten the needle thread in order to not see the stitches when opened,(???) Thanks
To be honest I really don't like that serger, it was too unreliable. I much prefer my new Brother Serger that I just got. This singer was a great unit too!
This video was very helpful to me. Thank you
I would love to see a tutorial on the blades. I have the chain going but my knives are not cutting
Tock Custom thank you for your response!
Thanks for the great information. Very helpful.
Thanks so much for watching! Happy to hear this was helpful :)
Great tutorial! I am new to sewing and love your videos!! Quick question, where do you get your fabric from? The pants you show at the end as an example is a great pattern. Thanks again for the videos, I appreciate you!!
Thank you so much for watching! I get most of my fabric from local Joann Fabrics, or from Fabric.com
There's so many great fabrics out there, hope you find some cool material to work with!
Thank you for this. I inherited one of these machines and have been leary of using it for fear of messing it up.
Omg I'm going though old comments and just came across yours. What are the odds I'd end up being pair with you for a secret santa months later lol. Hope you're doing amazing my friend!
love your vids!
query: where'd you get the fabric for your pants shown at the very end of the video? thanks!
Thanks for watching :)
awesome. can u make a video on using the rolled hem foot.
Was having issue with the #2 yellow. Thanks
Did the machine come with those handy pliers? Or would someone need to ensure they purchase those as well for and easier threading process? Thank you
I've bought 3 sergers in my life, and they've all come with their own pliers :)
Sybil
Disengage the knife
Can you do a video how to do different stitches 🧵 on the serger
Do you serve the pieces before you put the item together? Or after you have sewed the pieces together?
I always serger my seams after I put the panels together
When I look at you I can’t help but thinking of the Vikings. Lol rollo vibes
Thats a huge compliment!! I think I need to hit the gym now lol
Tock Custom Hahahhahahahhaha!!!! You look awesome!!! I love those Vikings! Especially rollo.
Love my Pro Finish.
Tock Custom Wow, thank you for your speedy reply as I’m also sewing masks and I need to use it as soon as possible. Thanks a million!
@@soniad.9411 For sure! Happy to help 😄
Tock Custom your the best!
I had no idea about the Serger/Overlock machine, wonderful video and expert guidance on this application. I am looking forward to using one in the future.
Thank you very much. Very good explanation.
I just got my first serger and it is the same one you have and I'm trying to figure what I need to set these to use it on faux fur for cosplay. Any thing will help thanks
Merci très bien expliqué! Machine démystifiée! Très clair merci beaucoup beaucoup!
NEVER MIND..I THOUGHT I WANTED ONE..
lol, I know what you mean. Get one when you think you need one, no rush at all :)
@@TockCustom Could you do a video on alternatives to serging (if you don't have the machine, but want that clean finish)? you touch on other ways in other videos.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
My thoughts exactly 😂
😂😂😂
Hi Tock, thanks for posting this. You've a great teaching style and I learned some useful tips. Just wondered if you plan to do any clothing manufacturing videos? I have the same brother embroidery/sewing machine you demo'd, aren't they the best? Never lets me down, always a great result. Glad to see more guys involved in sewing too, it's really chilling. Greetings from North Wales UK. :-)
For sure! I'm planning on doing men's Jean's, button down shirts, vests, and men's t-shirts soon. Should be a lot of fun!
Beautiful pants!
Thank you, I made them 🤣
lol thank you... I make all my pants ❤
Could you help me with a tutorial on the tension of the serger?
