    I am impressed with these crew spaces, especially that laundry room. Love that the engineer has that space by the bridge, instead of stuffed below decks in the engine room. Private being not leased I assume. I imagine the stress levels are lower not having to cater to unknown guests all the time. I glad to see you afloat again. • @ianm452
    @ianm452 13 дней назад +2

    In a recent video, you referred us to MY Loon. I watched one of her videos, and was surprised at the wide pillars between her wheelhouse windows, which significantly restrict the watchkeepers' visibility. The pillars would not have been a problem in the days when the only seat in the wheelhouse (of merchant ships and warships) was the Captain's chair, reserved solely for his use. Watchkeepers stood throughout their watches, and by standing close to one or other of the windows, they achieved unrestricted forward visibility. Because they were on their feet, they would tend to move around, facilitating the all-round lookout that is required. Indeed, OOWs were taught as cadets to move around to achieve this, particularly when masts, derricks, cranes and other parts of the ship's structure obstructed visibility, especially astern.
    The problem is exacerbated when watchkeepers are seated. The obstructions caused by the pillars between bridge windows mean that another vessel closing on a steady bearing (i.e. collision course) can be hidden from a stationary watchkeeper by one of these pillars until it is very close. It seems that yacht designers are oblivious to this danger. Radar has improved, but is still no substitute for looking out of the window: Collision Regulations still require a proper lookout to be kept by sight.

    This was very informative, thanks for these type of videos. One thing that struck me is that you mentioned there's only 4 of you crewing the boat. It seems like such a small number based on all the tasks and jobs I would imagine you all have to do every day and how jobs and workloads are shared. Could you please do a future video where you break down crew allocation per vessel and how crew numbers are determined, based on size of the ship or whatever other criteria.

    Very impressed by the laundry area. I've seen many tours of bigger yachts where laundry machines were jammed directly in the crew mess so you would hear them and smell them whenever you sat at the crew mess table. Although Espiritu Santo has a big amount of storage space for its size, it was clear in your tour that virtually every storage locker in the galley and laundry area were jammed full. So storage space is pretty much maxxed out. I think the precautions for offshore conditions in the galley and elsewhere were superb. I often wonder how well some "expedition" yachts with huge open salon areas and elaborate dining areas work out in rough conditions . Not enough handholds.

    Hey skipper, I am really interested to know how you make 4 crew work. I am looking at buying a 27 metre yacht for charter, but having worked for years on bigger boats, if you have 8-10 guests in 4/5 cabins, you need a Captain/Engineer (in your case you are separate) chef, deck hand(s) interior crew etc. With hours of rest etc (a complete fiction in my experience) how can 4 crew take care of 10 guests and the boat is immaculate as they always are? Do you still have your charter and management company?

    Are four crew enough when you have a charter? Do you hire a chef when you out on charter? Who tends to the needs of the guests?

      He says in the videos that this is a private yacht not for charter.

    Is there scope for a "meet the owner" vlog?

    Very interesting video.
    I'm just wondering, a crew of four big enough? That's a lot of work.

      I think the main difference is the usage of the boat. AWOL was a charter boat, and this one is in private use. Crew requiremants are very different.

      We do need a 5th, we actually have a 5th crew joining for 1 month at the end of July.

    What kind of charters would this ship be used for? Would this be used more for scientific expeditions or for leisure cruises?

      He has said that this is a private, not for charter yacht.

    I'm curious why you're back at the captains helm. I thought you retired from this line of work when you left awol.
