  • Hard rock and metal sounds are chased by artists the world over. What ou might not know is most of the speaker cabinets we buy and use have old, outdated speakers in them, or speakers that are cheap knock-off of what we are chasing. The Celestion Vintage 30 is THE Sound most people are looking for in heavy rock, metal and other genres.

I like the G12-T75 more in the mix...

Yeah that’s fair. Some people still love those speakers. I find them too harsh. They do cut through, but I find I can make the v30s cut through the same way without tearing my ears off

The V30 sounds more musical - you can hear guitar notes through the distortion. G75 sounds harsh, dry, gravel-like and muddy in the mix.

      I very much agree!

The G12-75 in this is a good example of frequency response making a guitar seem a lot more distorted than it really is. Those extra highs "feel" like more gain, with that fizz on top.

I think an ir loader works fine then just blend to get your own sound

Having begun to get into music in the 70's, have to say that I prefer the sound of the vintage speakers.

You like the vintage 30's? or the original gt12-75's?

The vintage 30's have that sound that I grew up listening to, so I would choose them over the gt12-75's. I have an old Marshall cab with four 25-watt 12's in it and it sounds amazing.

Yeah I would say I prefer them too.

I'd like to hear the V30 on one side and the Gt2 on the other, at the same time, with the full mix. Sometimes the thicker version and the brighter version sound huge together.
My main cab is a V30 4x12 and probably always will be. But in this example, I kind of prefer the G12. I agree it's got more sizzle and I can see that leaning into annoying territory, but it's not so much that it bothers me. Honestly I'm confident either one could sound great with a little EQ, but it's still a good comparison. I never recorded much, but I do know that for playing live, once you find a cabinet you really like, hang on to that rsscal. :)

I can say I tried that specifically, but tried them blended with each other and they didnt work well. The g12's dont sound super horrible in this mix, but once you get to final mix and mastering where everything gets brighter and louder, they do definitely start to get annoying. Guitars, especially rhythm stuff needs to be rolled off in the high frequencies way more than most people think. the g-12's generally just mean i have to work harder to make the mix right. Fair call though!

@@diyrecordingstudiojust move the mic away from the center of the g12 speaker

Only the ribbon is on the centre. The other two are between the dust cap and the edge.

I like all of the sounds. I think a blend of both cabinets would be awesome. When you eq’d your setup it sounded like how I thought a blend would sound.
How did you handle the low-end of the V-30 in the mix? I thought it was going to be muddy, but it wasn’t.

Thanks Kyle, great question. I have 3 mics, and sm57, a ribbon mic, the rm5 and an Md421 micing up the v30. Each mic goes to a specific pre and eq where I gently roll off highs and lows and eq a bit on the way in during recording. Then I just use fabfilter proq 3 to do the rest. It’s all about rolling off those lows somewhere otherwise it would get muddy in the mix. However I find it doesn’t sound to bad without any of that. My room being acoustically treated helps too!

That's my thought too, try both at once. Sometimes the thicker version and the brighter version sound huge together. Might just need a little EQ to peel back any peaks that offend your ears.
