About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
Love the demon speakers, but I also wanted to take the moment to compliment on your playing man. You’ve progressed a shit ton. It’s really inspiring to see. Almost like me and drums, except I’m not getting better.
Nahh your drumming is great man!
Thanks Ola, I really appreciate it!
Yeah when he whipped out master of puppets i was definitely impressed
Ola, as drummer playing guitar and bass for 13 years (and playing bass in a heavy metal band) while keeping drums as my main instrument, you just can’t be excellent at everything. I still struggle with strings, imo, compared to the apparent ease I have on drums.
And yeah nicer playing with time Glenn, reassures me on the fact you can still improve at 50+ years of age !
That's inspiring, I'm 38 and convinced I was too old to get better
When the Vintage 30 is finished, I'll use a Vintage 30 to be different.
Glenn didn’t see this one coming
hipster move as its finest. gg bro :D
The modern post-hipster proudly does things after they are no longer mainstream.
Right! Lol
Different or retro?
Imagine if the guys that first experimented with distortion 60-70 years ago had a chance to hear what distorted guitars can sound like now
I'd love to see/hear you do a thorough A/B against a V30 with same gear through them and you giving us your engineer's ears thoughts as you go.
Or blended with the v30
My buddy at metal head productions has a video for that idk if he was using an IR or if he loaded them in a diff cab bc he wasn’t super impressed but speaking as a Hesu cab owner it’s the best thing I’ve done for. My tone in the past 5 or so years and eliminated a lot of space for me to get rid of other cabs. I 100% endorse everything about these cabs/speakers I use them live I use them in the studio and I feel like I finally found my “tone” I’d been chasing the last almost 20yrs
I actually dont like it. And i love that. I love that other people like it because that means if everyone finds different speakers then shit might start sounding fresh. You like the Demon. I love my G12T-75’s. Some people like Jensen, some like WGS. I’m excited for all the new tones that we are gonna hear from all these new speaker combinations, now that everyone is moving on from the V30s
Edit: I’d also like to say that i love that people are trying new mics. I like the demon a lot more through just the sm57
I'm really with you on that T75!
My favorite pairing is a T75 miced with an E906 :)
I still use and prefer V30s, but I don't produce and distribute music so who cares. The tone in this video sounds a little dark to me, but it's probably mostly the mic.
@@Mr.Goldbar ill have to look into that! I have mine in a 1960a marshall cab and switch between a marshall dsl100 and my new EVH 5150iii 6l6
@@sqlb3rn yeah it might just be the V67. You might like it with just an SM57
G12T-75 is my goto, live or studio
can we just acknowledge the fantastic mix demo. the dynamics seriously was really cool!
I love the Hesu tones. It’s almost like they create space in the sound but keep the sound really full and clear. Great review Glen.
really enjoying the swaps n downpawing glenn superb and really gives an insight into the small diffs that us musos crave and try to attain in the mixing, keep carving g
Amazing video..The full mix should definitely be made into a full song! Awesome work to everyone involved; and thank you very much!!
Great playing Sir! Look forward to hearing more of this amazing cab 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Glen! Thanks for pushing the envelope and showing there are great alternatives in the world. Keep up the great work.
GLENNNN! I love the mids of the speaker and your mic choices! Great job!
Great video. I've been doing a bit of research on this amp. Thanks for another demo to check out.
Very good sounding speaker. I have always taken your advice to branch out from a v30. I ended up landing on a dv 77 and v30 mixed and am glad I ventured out a little. Will keep this speaker in mind for the future- great demo!
Hell ya Zach so cool you got to demo the speaker and be featured ! I wish i had better speakers on my computer. The whole demo sounded good to me....
I'm a single-coil guy at heart, so I really loved the strat clips. Can we get a side-by-side with the same recording reamped through the V30s and the Demons?
Finally got round to getting myself a Hesu vertical 2x12, thanks for bringing them to my attention! It’s so good!
Dude, this was awesome... But seriously coming from Thomann
I would expect nothing else! Thanks for this review Glenn...
Glenn this Cab kicks major ass ,and in a lot of your previous videos the speaker cab makes the most difference looks like I found my new Cab the midrange on this Cab is dope.
Thanks for confirming my opinoin dear Glenn, You nailed it why I love my M212 so much. Has become my favourite cab powered by my Driftwood Nightmare mini. I am happy with my sound.
I like the tone coming off the demon speakers especially in the full mix. Your playing skills are getting better as well too!
I was wondering if you can do an A/B comparison on the demons vs V30s vs g12t-75. I just finished fixing up an old Marshall 412 cab that has mid 80's g12t-75 speakers in it.
Loved the final mix!
That is some amazing playing! Thank you
Your playing is getting really good Glenn.
Great video Glenn, damn that Solar sounded nice
Thanks for the demo. Those speakers sound great, with really nice mids. I like my mids! Didn't you demo some cream backs at one time? I really liked them, but this sounds even better.
Wow Glenn your chops on the axe are crunchy !!!!!! I switched from guitar to Bass 2 years ago and it's revolutionized me interest in music and Lif.
Hi Glenn,
I was looking a way to change my guitar tone and I took your advice and I changed the speaker out in my Marshall DSL40CR. It came loaded with a Celestion Vtype which did sound good but it was decidedly "mediocre"
I switched it out for a Neo Creamback and wow! What a difference, way more bitey mid range which I like and as a side benefit I've shaved a bit of weight out of my combo :)
Thanks dude you're doing Kroms work xD
Yep, rocking this cab for 4 years now, still satisfied with my choice. We had in the studio really against really nice sounding Marshall 4x12 with V30, and it was fascinating to hear the difference. Marshall was better for the long sounding chords, but when it came to riffs and fast notes, clarity of Hesu ruled...and since it was a symphonic death/black record Hesu ended up on the record.
Damn dude. Loving the licks! you really are a great guitar player.
Beautiful guitar man. It looks amazing!!
Thank you for this, Glenn! Think I’m grabbing these… I’ve been searching for speakers to replace the ones in my 2x12 Fender Princeton Chorus.
GLENNS BEEN PRACTICING!!!!! NICE PLAYING!!!! THAT SOLAR FAN FRET WAS MY FAVORITE!!!! AND THAT NEW SPEAKER CAB ROCKS MY SPOT!!!!! LOVE THE VIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This sounds way better than that hempback/ evh combo you’ve been using lately imo! This rips!
Damn, that is a great tone, I like it a lot! 👍
Sounds sick AF. My go-to studio guitars are my LTD H1001 (which currently has the Mustaine Livewires active set in it, but I'm about to go passive with a TV Jones SuperTron set and custom wiring), and my handy-dandy Schecter Hellraiser (with an EMG Retro Active Super 77 set). Cool to see we have a similar taste in guitars, it lets me know I'm doing things right.
Playing sounds great on that strat man 🤘
DUDE!! This couldn't have come in a better time! I’m on a market for a 2x12 and was looking on Mesa Recto but those are IMPOSSIBLE to get in Sweden now. And the alternative I had in mind was Hesu 2x12!!! But due to the lack of info about them on the internet, I wasn’t sure.. Thanks for the video!!
Hmm.. after watching the video I'm left with my questions unanswered.. I think it's cool to test the cab with several guitars. Single coils + humbuckers on 6 an 7 string. Sure. But.. like.. how does the cab handle the low end of a Dual Rectifier? Or the midrange honk of 5150? Or Marshalls midrange? I think that cabinet reviews need to include more amps. Not more guitars... Cool video anyway...
A speaker that I've really been enjoying is the DV-77. Had a V30 in my orange cab, paired with a DSL 20 and now a FIreball 25, but I swapped it for a DV-77. Granted I'm not a pro and just play for myself, but the DV-77 has this nice punchiness to it and sounded way more pleasant than the V30.
Killer vid!
I mixed my DV77s with cv75s. I'm very happy with the result.
This demo made me buy two Hesu Demon Speakers and an empty 2x12 cab. Can’t wait for everything to show up so I can put it all together and play some monstrous riffs through it. Thanks for giving me that final push to go for the demons
Got the same LTD guitar(same finish too). Mine came with a flawless finish as well and set ready to play with a pretty low action so I guess they do it for everyone, not just known youtubers. Perfect metal machine!
Hesu Demon speaker is great. Got one of their cabs a while ago, I don't play much, but I appreciate how great it sounds.
Thing that stood out to me on the mix was the low end of the kick drum and bass. Love that punch!
I have a 2×12 cabinet loaded with Eminence Governors, a better alternative to the Vintage 30 in my opinion, and they sound great for what my band is doing...but we're not playing a whole lot of metal. Great video, Glenn.
Been waiting on this vid!
Great video, Glenn!! Sounds really thick and tight. Any chance you'll be making some IRs of the Demon speakers?
currently saving for the HESU demon. Awesome speaker!
I’ll say this glen you playing has gotten increasingly better
I love how the tone barely changed as you changed guitars (mostly in attack/sustain not tone) 😂. Love the tone you are getting btw! Very thrashy sounding
And the highlight of the video is the drummer at the end of the video, that guy killed it!
Well, they certainly live up to the branding. I didn't know a speaker can sound... distinctly evil. I like it. Not sure if your specific setup is great for specifically lead in all cases, but for a certain sound it's fine.
thanks for testing demon!
When Kohle did his speaker shootout, there were tons of V30 alternatives that sounded great. For my taste, this one is a tad too dark. Might work great for some types of music, not sure about "mainstream metal" stuff. What I like about this sound is that it doesn't have any sort of "offensive midrange" that you'd spend painstakingly EQ-ing out...
Yes the Demon is great! I got a Hesu cab a few weeks ago and it sounds just amazing. I got the cab because it is built in Poland and not shipped around the world as most other cabs.
I tried a bunch of different speakers in it and the Demon sounded the best. But I also have to admit, the Hesu cab I liked with V30s in it.
I also like my Fane F70, WGS Reaper HP and the Jensen Electric Lightning speakers for my metal tones.
I must admit, I'm quite impressed with your rhythm playing. Do you have any warm up routines or anything like that for rhythm? Or is it simply from playing guitar since the 80s
I'm getting my Demon this week actually! Gonna be doing the cheap mixer trick blending it with a Celestion V Type, with a PR30 and a 57 at first and eventually a PR30 and D2 or DTP340. The Demon is suuuper sick sounding
That Demon is a nice speaker. Sounds similar to a modded Marshall 1960a cab I borrowed once. It had Greenbacks and T75s in an X pattern. Its got midrange bark and that scoopy thing going on too just like that cab did.
Might have to get some of those Demons at some point.
Very awesome sound.
Real gutsy tone !!
Mmmm not working for me, way too dark, but I'm definitely all for finding speaker alternatives. Glad you're really digging it. I've never been much of a fan of V30s anyways. Current favourites are the Celestion Cream 90w alnico, the 70th anniversary, and the Century Vintage, all awesome speakers with a Boogie Mark IV. The Eminence DV-77 really gives the V30 a run for its money too, with more girth.
Great video. Sick Gibson.
What is the (tonal) difference between 8 and 16 ohm speakers? Is there any difference at all?
luv the bad news t-shirt, speaker snds great too...
That ESP is something else. Love it.
Yeah that sounds really fucking good man thanks for this video Glenn ..
I've had my eyes on the Hesu Demon for a while now and this just confirms it. To me, a cab with a V30 and a Demon would be perfect since they fill each other out. Maybe you could do a video on something like that where you mic up multiple speakers at once?
Sounds great! I'd love an IR version of this cab.
So blown away by your playing that i didnt notice the speaker.
I bought the Harley benton vintage 30 cab because of your recommendation. Now i see this. Looks like im gonna have to save up for a polish hesu
Love my Fender American Deluxe. Fender is making good stuff. But I love my ESP LTD too. Impressive speaker comparison, I wonder where the Jensen 12-70 would fit in that mix.
Damn those speakers sound stellar!
I wonder if they have a 4x12 cabinet. Would like to see if you can maybe get one and do a comparison between the 2x12 and the 4x12, super nice video btw Glenn
Hey Glenn, longtime follower, however not so into comments, but I got a question (sorry if it sounds silly): Now that you mentioned about the LTD guitar "great recording guitar", what does a guitar for recording should have versus a "live performing" one? Is it something like "It's a good guitar, but built mostly for sitting in your ass in the comfort of your home without any risk to expose it to external elements?" does this relate to not having sturdy components?
What bridge pickup is that on the Strat?
I need one! 🤘
To me both sound good in each their way.
I just use what ever speakers my cabinets came with and tweaked the amps and effects to give me the sounds that I like out of them without drowning in a mix.
GLENNN….Just an out of field question, have you ever tried a combination of a 12inch and 15inch speaker 🔈 in a cab? Perhaps might get more bottom end with a 15inch? Just an idea.
You’re not kidding! 🤘
Love the creambacks since I started using them. I need to finally record with them
Damn, your fretting is quick! I'm learning guitar and really struggling with getting my fingers into the right places with any sort of speed at all. Any recommendations on how to get my speed up here? Is it just practicing fretting chords, and changing between them? Or are there some drills, etc., that can help?
Start slow enough that you can play whatever your learning absolutely flawless then slowly work up to the correct tempo!
I’m getting a Diezel D Moll soon. Been considering Hesu cabs for a while. I know Diezel use v30s in a lot of their own cabs. Anyone know if a Hesu cab with the Demon speakers would be a good pairing for the D Moll?
SICK SOUNDS!!! I'm a V30 guy but that sounds great
I dig the bottom end and hi mids. Sounds to my ear like there is a carved out section in the low miss which makes it sound huge
that 57 on it RIPS, definitely a speaker worth looking at for my own cab
After listening to it and knowing it was brand I was expecting a much more eye-watering price, cool!
I love the fact that you're into classic British comedy (Bad News)!
That sounded so fuckin sick and retro with the Stratocaster. Absolutely beautiful.
Oui Freaking- Ve. That 7 strings guitar sounds insane 😎🔥🤘.
sounds pretty good. Sounds different, at the very least.
Loved seeing that Jackson Kellybird bass in the mix too. ;) that's the Dave Ellefson sig, unless I'm mistaken.
Yeah it is
Yep. Got killer active pickups. Really love having it in my rig for when I’m in a recording session.
I combined a Hesu Demon and a Vintage 30 in my 2x12 cab and it sounds insanely good with an MT-15.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the G12T-75. I’ve heard a TON of hate and I’m curious if they have any merit since they’re some of the most common speakers found in Marshall cabs. Thanks!
About time 😆
Glenn, which speaker(s) would blend well with this? I think a speaker blend shoot out versus a V30 would be a real eye opener for a LOT of people.
I bought the dirt cheap Monoprice 1x12 with Vintage 30 for like $150 on sale 2 years ago and I've just had literally zero complaints. Cool to see that Hesu is meaningfully competing, but the Vintage 30 is really pretty close to flawless to me.
Same here. I also have one of the SR 2x12 with v30s in it and it sounds insanely good.
Nobody said v30 doesn't sound good. Point is everyone is using it, thus sounding the same.
@@samuliauno8163 And I didn't assume that anyone did. Are you just terrible at English? The video says "vintage 30 is over!", meaning it doesn't sound nearly as good as the hesu.. which is definitely not true lol.
That strat sounded amazing.
Phew, when I read the title, I thought Vintage Guitars (by JHS UK) were going out of business after 30 years, but that's still 3 years ahead!
I hope they stay around for a while and then some.
Nice tones sir. Nice playing too! One question though as I've always been curious.....exactly how heavy is "fuck"?
11:21 now THAT is a drummer who's got his fundamentals down pat!
Love my Little Hesu 1*12 with the Demon.
Seems to be voiced a little darker than the v30, i dig it
