It might be less risky to buy some panel from a scrapyard, and even cheaper on the long run if you have to repaint any of your cars due to this trial.

I just parked near a 'peaceful BLM protest' in Portland. Any ideas how to repair all those scratches, broken windows, flat tires, well, a totaled car. "That's some serious damage." Flex tape?
So, I did a LOT of research before attacking the 1 foot long "light" scratch on my cars fender. Based on PF's review, I bought Meguire's Ultimate Compound for $12 at Harbor Freight,. I applied 6 small drops to a "wavy" foam applicator. Installed the applicator into a electric drill. Taped off the area I was working on, and ran the drill at about 1,000 rpm with moderate pressure - letting the applicator "do the work" Made sure the pad didn't go dry, wiped area off with a clean micro fiber towel, and after about 7 minutes the scratch was gone. Thx Project Farm Dude!
This channel is filled with high quality content, no bullshit. My sincere compliments

The pacing of cutting the videos nearly as fast as you're reading the instructions aloud is actually kindof awesome! Extremely easy to follow and doesn't feel like stretching or wasting time. You even went over several products and their packaging in less time than some go over a single product!
I hope other viewers are liking it, too, because lots and lots of products are missing nice, concise examples of use, let alone comparison.
Awesome, thank you!
9 products in 12 minutes is crazy. Amazing editing.
No freaking way he scratched his car omg, i feel so honored that he did that for us, his audience, u sir, u are the greatest of all freaking time

Just goes to show, don't ever think that the most expensive product is the best. It's just a brand banking on it's "reputation". These reviews are absolutely amazing and help the consumer pick a product that works as opposed to what it claims. Thank you PF. Appreciate your hard work!
Great point! Thank you very much!
Yes. But the top 2 brand in reputation did the 2 best jobs. 3M products are always seem to do the best in their product segments. The only problem is sometimes they are the most expensive... Sometimes they are priced aggressively, like in this case.
@@AnthonyClauser I wouldn't say always the best, but when it comes to consistency, yeah they're usually at least above average.
@@AnthonyClauser I have NEVER been disappointed by a 3M product. Expensive? Yes!
In this case, the most expensive product DID perform the best.
"Apply a penny size..." NOPE, I am going with an Olympic medal size.
LOL, now that's funny
Those parts get me every time, make me chuckle like a madman!
Quarter sized portion? Peter North would be impressed!
I appreciated the video as always, but he definitely used an assload of compound lol
"Quarter size" was also increased to Olympic medal size :)
lol Thanks for watching.
I bought the 3M product based on your results, and it worked perfectly! Totally erased a nasty shopping cart accident.
Told my wife and described your channel, including your test dummy, the farmabago and your mostly scientific approach and down home methodology.
She said "sounds like a cross between Mythbusters and The Red Green Show". Nailed it! Thank you PF.
You are welcome!
I got the 3m scratch removal kit based on your video, I can honestly say I was bewildered at how well it worked. I have a black subaru and do camp so it has a fair few scratches and an hour with this kit removed pretty much all of them. The drill ended up being a little messy, but the rain should knock that extra remover off

Please do a steel vs ceramic ball bearings.
Great video idea! Thank you
@@ProjectFarm yes! and test them after a long time, performance of ceramic bearings will degrade badly
Yes please, steel, hybrid ceramic and full ceramic! I'm running full ceramic on my motorcycle axles, every time I set down a wheelie I'm worried about them exploding :)
I know that Bombardier used ceramic supercharger bearings in the Seadoo PWC for a few years. They had a nasty habit of shattering and destroying pretty much the entire motor if the engine over revved, like from jumping a wake.
@@toysareforboys1 I used double sealed steel ball bearings on my motorcycle. It cost a tiny amount of top end, but I only hit that once.
Should've incorporated a paint thickness test afterwards! These scratch removers all work by removing/ thinning the layer of clearcoat around the scratch.
yep, a few of these in the wrong hands with sandpaper is going to end up with some VERY unhappy people. Specially on modern cars with super thin clear coats.
Great point! Thank you
That’s what I was thinking. There was only like one kit that worked without a sander and it was kind of disappointing.
@@brendanberry7403 Especially those people that don't know how to use sandpaper and just sand in a single line along the scratch.
brendan berry Do you know why modern cars have thinner clear coats than older cars? Genuine question
Thank you so much! Today I was considering buying the one that performed the worst but thought I need to do my research first. I did a search on RUclips and your video came right up. I'm already a fan so I was delighted to see you had done a video on this. Thanks for saving me money and Aggravation.
Glad I could help!

Project Farm, you're the good neighbor that everyone needs; the guy who appears at the moment you need a tool and lends you his own, the one who checks your house when you're out of town, the nice man who asks how your parents are doing when you're both out doing yard work, the man who knows the best place to get new tires or good guys who'll re-roof your house for a fair price. Keep up the great work, neighbor!!
Thanks, will do!
He is your neighbour?

"If you don't have access to a drill", get one. They aren't that expensive, and they are one of the most useful tools you can have around your house or apartment.
No kidding, even the cheep cheep corded drill would be a time saver!
Good point!
Some people don't even have basic hand tools like screw drivers and hammers; so lets start with baby steps first.
I wish I was joking about that, but I have personally met some people like that; those same people also didn't even know how to change a flat on their vehicle.
@@Jack-yl7cc true but people without basic tools aren't the kind to do DIY repairs like this, they will just pay someone else to do it.
Usually I'd recommend this order:
Quality rotary tool, Jig Saw, Drill, Angle Grinder, Router.
For most basic small DIY tasks the rotary tool will be more than enough as a single go-to power tool. Small paint scratches can be buffed out pretty fast with the high RPM and proper bit. Of course, buying the right tool for the job is important so really if you have scratches and fade as bad as the tests, get a nice corded drill.
This was the most helpful video for what I was looking for. Straight to the point!

Right after watching this test i went out and bought Meguiar's scratch eraser kit and man that works great! Made my panel look brand new again! The turtle kit is a joke. I used a couple months ago and it didn't do jack!

@I Know Better So is the ceramic spray!
@I Know Better I use their "Wax and Dry" regularly, does a great job considering how LITTLE effort is required!

I appreciate that!
SUPER Job! I've watched many scratch removal vids and this is by far the best. Thank you!

Just thought of a great testing idea: NITRILE (disposable) GLOVES. It would be great to see who holds up the best to punctures, chemicals such as brake cleaner, texture grip, etc.
Great idea!
Gloveworks HD orange ones are the best I've found and I've tried probably 20 different brands. I've literally stabbed them with a screwdriver hard enough to leave a bruise on my palm yet the glove stayed intact. I've caught them on sharp corners, cotter pins, etc and they hold up really well. The other huge benefit I've found is that even covered in grease you can still maintain a strong grip on tools, components etc and they clean up easy with just a paper towel, no tossing them once they get greasy like my old go to brand the Raven nitrile
Great suggestion! Thank you.
@@ProjectFarm Seconded!
@@ProjectFarm Venom Steel Nitrile gloves are what we prefer at our detailing business. They are very chemical resistant, super strong and comfortable to wear.
Project Farm, Thanks for eliminating the crap and showing us what to buy. Thanks got lots of doorbangers here in Pennsylvania. God bless

Meguiar's or 3M, guaranteed NEVER to disappoint!
@@TheOzthewiz True, never been disapointed by Megiuiar's products. Sonax and 3M also have some great stuff too.
I can't tell you how many times I've bought a "pink car" at a discounted priced, hit it with some compound etc., and had a nice bright red one!
I used to detail cars when I was a kid, I loved it. Now that I'm (much) older I find it to be a chore. I've been wanting to detail my car for a while and now I know which products to use.

I have the 3M kit for restoring headlights and it came with an orange foam drill pad. I used it before with Meguire's ultimate compound with good results for light scratches. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for sharing
You are THE BEST i have ever aeen on youtube for side by side comparison videos. Awesome job 👍👍
Thank you so much 😀
Personally out of my experience, the formula one Scratch Out is utterly useless. From what I've used, meguiars Scratch X is best.
Great feedback!
Lol same, rip 8 bucks
@@TheBanjoShowOfficial I've spent $60+ on failing products. Hope ultimate compound is the last attempt 🤞
It's probably not wildly relevant to this discussion, but the ScratchX2.0 really is a different product to the original ScratchX. The original used to be recommended for guitar finishes, but the 2.0 added silicone oils to the product, and that's apparently bad news for (future) finish repairs.
I was also disappointed by NuFinish and had similar results. If you ever get a chance to test some pro level stuff, there's Farecula (I think it's British). That stuff is phenomenal in my experience. Presta is very good also (not sure if either are still on market). I also find that some rim/metal polishes do an unbeatable job with paint correction (Mothers Alu polish in particular as well as NevRDull if careful). Great video! Thanks for sharing!
using Ultimate Compound with a buffer gives the best results, though I guess this video is primarily demonstrating all-in-one kits
Great point! Thank you
Meguires 105 then 205 is better
Well duh!

I've long been a fan of the Meguiar's ScratchX 2.0 which can be bought without a kit and used by hand for small jobs or with a drill pad or better yet orbital DA. Thanks for the fun test, ProjectFarm!
You are welcome!
After this video, I decided to pick up scratchx 2.0. tried it on al kinds of scratches, deep and barely noticable, but I can't get the stuff to work. Any idea why? :(
@@xdboterham Same here
I've used this stuff and it seems to leave a haze when the sun hits it... like... a bunch of small scratches in the clear coat that reflect in the sun... any tips on how to get rid of that?
@@stach121289 Yah because it's a compound, you need to polish it out with a polishing pad and polish, I like Meguiar's microfiber cutting and polishing pads and Adams compound and polish. But you could use Meguair's 205 for polish or their #9 and a DA polisher. The only way to get rid of scratches is to loose some clear coat, then bring it back up to shine.
Seems like 3M is a solid company with solid products.
thanks for the feedback.
There is a reason they are litteraly THE stockmarket company. You can look at the health of 3M alone to know the health of the entire market.
Someone should tell a certain RUclips mechanic *coughcough* Scotty *coughcough*
3m seems to make awesome stuff all round, from automotive stuff to the stethoscope i use for work!

Great video! I love watching your content, especially the oil and oil additive comparisons as well as fuel additive/alternative tests. I think since you showed the scratch removers, headlight restoration would be a great follow video to it. I’m currently in the process of restoring the headlights on a car I just bought that sat under a tree for 2 years without being driven or washed. Toothpaste alone didn’t work so I had to resort to sanding them with 400, 1000, 2000, and 3000 grit sandpaper, then using toothpaste as a polishing compound. Now I’m gonna try using some Meguiar’s plastx to eliminate the remaining haze and then apply a rustoleum uv resistant clearcoat to protect them. Much better than spending hundreds of dollars on new headlights.
