    Objectively, no other rock and roll entertainer has ever come close to giving their fans as much as Bruce, especially in the 1970’s. No one else played as many shows or as long each night and put as much energy into the performance.

    I saw Bruce for the first time a year earlier at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, and left thinking, *knowing*, I had just experienced the greatest rock & roll that had ever been or was ever likely to be. It's hard to explain what I was talking about - and this few minutes on television provides only a hint - but extrapolate this hint to live and loud and you can get an idea of why Bruce Springsteen has been performing the Greatest Show on Earth for over 50 years.

      This was a great period for Bruce, after the Darkness Tour and gearing up for The River -- if you haven't seen the 11/4/80 Tempe DVD it's a MUST. Not a perfect show, but who wants it to be... as long as everyone has half as much fun as Bruce, it's a great time had by all. It's also fun to see corded mics and guitars (and he falls behind a speaker stack, but he's okay, and hams it up). And it's also great to see "new" songs like The River and Hungry Heart without everyone in the zip code singing along. Thanks for the comment!

      The amazing thing wasn't the performance (although it was amazing), but he did these shows with these intensities night in and night out for about 18 months through 78-79. Every tour has it's high points, but I think the Darkness (River) tour is when Bruce hit his stride and never looked back. Gosh, we were all so young and really good looking then.

      heidi szabo it’s kinda funny, everyone had fun at these shows. But no one had more fun than Bruce... you ought to see about 4 hours of this sometimes. It’s exhausting even with the emotional slow songs thrown into a 33 song set. Make sure you can see a show from ‘78 - 80 (not yet some you can watch full size). The River ‘80 show in Tempe is probably best. It amazes me how he stays on top of the emotions of a crowd, going from the heartfelt dramatic to the over the top ROCK. Good luck, I hope to post more soon (check out Prove It All Night someplace here on the page). 😳

      Most Springsteen fans that have seen him over the course of his career (i.e., old people) have their favorite years or specific tours, mine are '78-'80. That covers the Darkness On The Edge Of Town and The River tours. I think a lot of hardcore fans would agree. There are fascinating backstories to both tours that helped shape Bruce and the ESB and define their music. A close second for me is the '99-'00 Reunion tour -- I saw him 12 times on that one in NJ, PHL, and PHX. Just to stress, he always puts on a remarkable show, but for me there seemed to be some inexplicable magic: a touch of raw connection and '78-'80 and inspiration in '99-'00 that I still find spellbinding. You need to get the DVD/BR of this concert this clip is from (No Nukes, 1979) which is being released right now, then get the 1980 River Tour Tempe DVD/BR. You'll be hooked. 👍
      I also enjoy other great solo and ESB performances, having seen them back to '75 and as late as recently, but I always go back to the above. (Apologies for the long comment.) 😳

      @Paul Tell your dad if he really loved you he'd buy you the No Nukes box set. Or The River box set. Or both. ... and then enjoy the shows with him! In the early 90s, Bruce was touring with a different band, you both need to enjoy some primo E Street Band! Good luck, my friend 🤘👍

      @@hehoosmeltitdeltit Thanks so much !🙏🌎🍀We already have a HUGE collection of Bruce's CD's, DVD's and some vinyls (all the albums, live shows and some singles) And I am thinking about getting the new No Nukes box set because we are really big fans. My dad even has the Live 1975-85 box set ( 3 CD's) in a really big box with great book♥️👍I am really happy that he got me into good music👋

      @@PAul.paUL.PaUL. I'm happy to get it to you, Paul. I drove 95 miles on the day it was released to get the '75-'85 set, still have it (with booklet!) on something called cassette tape (ask your Dad, he knows what it is 🤔, lol). I must be old, I just noticed I punctuated an emoji 😳 Anyway, No Nukes looks good from everything I've seen, and the mastering and A/V formats will be state of the art. I see it as a can't miss. I think the video I posted here is probably from Japanese news B-roll, footage shot for background to use in a news report, in such good shape because I found it on Laser Disc. You sound super into concert footage, check out brucespringsteen.net because Bruce has been releasing shows every month for a while now -- remastered from original tapes, they are excellent quality and are often shows that were previously bootlegged in sub-par quality (that we still wore out). The new recordings are just amazing. Would also recommend the Tempe '80 show! We're just Prisoners of Rock and Roll, right? 👏

    Everyone, thanks for the great comments -- I'm glad you enjoy the clip! Yes, it's a great capture, but it was just another night at the office for Bruce. Check out the 1980 Tempe show that's included with The Ties That Bind (The River retrospective)... I'd post some but youtube keeps sending me nastygrams, but you can find them around (or buy it, well worth adding to the collection). Hey, the guy's good at what he does, has an amazing talent and unbridled energy, and no one's told him he shouldn't have that much fun. Thankfully he chooses to spend these moments with us! Best wishes to all -- RJ

    this is absolutely, positively the best example of all time of how a band can bring down the house and leave the stage at the end of their concert. the only thing that even comes close is believe it or not kiss also at msg, but a few years earlier with black diamond.

      Wow -- I bet it was. Always liked the way he tries to play to all sides and all levels (all bands do that, but he seems especially aware of it). When I first saw him in '74 in Phoenix, it was in the round in a 2500-seat theater with a revolving stage. When he played later on the Darkness tour in '78, I understood they blocked off the back of the Coliseum just because he didn't want to put fans where they couldn't see the stage unobstructed (and that wasn't because he didn't know if he could sell the entire place, he always sold out Phoenix). Ever since hearing that, I always look to see the attention he gives to the back in shows since, from the '80 Tempe show I attended and now being able to see the '79 No Nukes. He doesn't just sell tickets, he really sells his performance to every seat in the house.

    Bruce does James Brown!

  • @MattSmith-iq1ld
    @MattSmith-iq1ld 2 года назад +1

    In the words of soul legend Sam Moore: "People call James Brown the hardest working man in show business. It's not true. Springsteen was unbelievable." Totally appropriate as one of Bruce's biggest influences was Sam & Dave. And that's what so many do not get about The Boss. Everyone associates him with Dylan, but Dylan NEVER delivered religious performances like this. When Bruce broke up Steel Mill, he did so to adopt a more soul/R&B influence. Jeff "skunk" Baxter once said this performance saved rock and roll. Disco was dominating the charts.

      I grew up in Phoenix, one of Bruce’s fav places outside of the NE. My first Bruce shows were in ‘74 and ‘75 - and I loved the music and enjoyed the shows. By the infamous ‘78 show, however, I had seen Thin Lizzy, the Stones, Frampton, Eric Clapton, Boston, Rick Derringer and I realized not everyone put on shows like Bruce (or should I say NO one put on shows like Bruce). I had literally thought all rock concerts were like Bruce before I knew better. Maybe my niavete is funny, but the fact is, Bruce has set a a nearly unattainable performance standard not just for the past 50 yers or so - - but for all time.
      We should all enjoy our work so much.
