    Rent alone takes more than 75% of my fixed income. When I fell through my glass door, I didn’t know how I could replace it. Thank you for sharing your secret!

    The same thing happened today...Was mowing the lawn or lack of. And, a 1 1/2" rock pummeled the stationary sliding door.. And, is still in between the 2 panes of tempered glass. It was interesting to watch and listen to it shatter all the way to the top.Have it taped off right now. Going to do the plexi hack. Thanks! Great temporary fix.

    Hey, thank you so much for posting this video. You don't know what a relief it is that there's a cheaper way to do this because we are strapped for cash in fixing ours. By the way, our dog who we weren't supposed to have, decided the head butt the glass door .anyway, thanks.

    Yep. true- The glass was broken so we replaced with the plexiglass over the frame.
    We cleaned the inside glass really well and then attached the plexi to the frame.
    We did leave the gasket from the old one in place, just in case we wanted to replace the glass.

    Curious if you removed the broken pieces of glass that were stuck to the old trim? we removed the trim but there is still glass glued to that old mounting tar.

    Just wondering did you get the plexiglass at home depot or lowes? I was reading and it looked a little more expensive. I have yet to get up there and check for myself. Thanks. Any problems like I read in fogging?

      Lowes is where we got it.
      We haven't had any problems with fogging.

    with none of the insulating properties of the inert gas filled gap between the double panes. you'd be better off paying the $350. due to the energy savings

    do these doors have an inside casing over the glass that pops out? possible to install security film under that inside casing?

    • @CheapGeek
      @CheapGeek  8 лет назад

      It was a dual pane door. It was sealed and not meant to come apart. Security film would work on the inside facing pane.

    This is sort of a cheap fix that I would do if i were in dire straits. It's December in New England now. Three days ago, I don't know how it happen but, my stationary door outside glass chattered. It made a loud thud that I heard downstairs in my office. There was no evidence of any trauma. My insurance company estimated the cost to repair would be $2400.00. I called around and found that I could order the stationary door if I new the manufacture but, I can't find the nomenclature label anywhere on the unit.

  • @aintskrd

    All these negative comments are from glass replacement workers or owners that are mad because they can't gauge you with a $350 to $400 repair. I just got an estimate for $575 and the guy was going to use plexiglass. FT!

    • @hexadecim8

      Definitely use mountain tape Mr repairson. Glur could get in your drink and cause anasty infection. Be the nail not the hamburger. Gang gang

  • @bigballs5555
    @bigballs5555 6 лет назад +1

    As a glazier I also don't recommend this unless you are really broke. I don't think it is technically against code since plexiglass is safety glass (maybe it depends on the area, I'm in Illinois), but it's going to get rid of the all the insulating properties of the insulated glass unit. And the guy left in the ugly remnants of the tempered glass.

    Im a glazier with more than 10 years experience, work in NYC, these method is totally wrong, the plexi glass is illegal in exit doors, the plexi glass can not be clean because it get scratch easily, eventually turning white of scratches, i understand you try to save money, im a home owner my self, but you will end up doing the work twice in less than a month or two.

      im sure a license electrician will not split the wire and put duct tape and install 5 new outles from the same breaker, im not sure if you will understand that, but people that do this for a living will, is illegal for a reason someone could die, not saying you can not do it, it just wrong. fyi i throw a soda can last week in the park.

      The full replacement unit is called an Insulated Glass Unit, which is the dual glazed, sealed unit that fits inside the frame of that door section . I was quoted around $350 here in So Cal a while back just for the unit. I'll be doing the R and R myself.
