This happened to me today! I heard a loud bang and saw the glass on my sliding door slowly start cracking. The cracking is still happening after 7 hours of the initial bang sound.
A friend's storm door was making a noise, but they didn't know it was the door... until it exploded, sending pinky sized, super pointy shards all over the living room!
I had this happen while working on a home, my boss and I were doing flooring, we literally showed up for a job and hadn't even started working and i heard this weird crackeling sound and the bqck sliding door we had never even gone by suddenly had cracks spiderwebing throughout it. We go above and beyond with proactive measures to not damage or harm customers homes and always are honest about when we do but it drove me insane because I know I didn't go near it and didn't think he did but the customer obviously blamed us which I don't blame them but its one of the reasons ive seriously considered wearing a go pro lol.

Tempered glass is designed to shatter into little bits because they are relatively harmless. Just messy. Your other option would be laminated glass, same as in the windshield of you car. That glass will not spontaneously break and if it does happen to break (rock, baseball, so on) it will crack but there is a plastic interlayer that will keep it from falling out of the hole until it can be replaced.
that's why I would never use tempered glass in my building. a building with tempered glass can be broken into with virtually no sound made and with a device as simple as a sharp point to scratch the glass to make it shatter and fall making a quiet hiss like spilling sugar
At sunset yesterday my outer layer only, of the fixed frame of patio door glass shattered while i was a few rooms away and heard a noise as if a door slammed and to my surprise as last i knew these were to be unbreakable and knew of unbreakable ones long ago, this one was 24+ years old i guess this was the turn of the time that they began to use cheap made in china crap?
The temperature isn't a consideration with tempered glass. Tempered glass is used in oven doors that are a lot hotter than 40. Temperature can definitely be an issue when annealed glass cracks however. A glass pro trained in analyzing glass breakage (yep there is such a thing) would be able to tell you what happened but only if they could be on site before the window/door was fixed and the broken glass dumped in a bucket.
It's caused sometimes from lateral pressure applied from the top of the window due to foundations in the house shifting

A sliding glass door isn’t affected by pressure in the foundation. It’s an independent piece of the house.

Lexan with scratch resistant coating is the best
Probably because the frames that are installed unknowingly put pressure on the glass panes.
Temperature is also a big factor as the glass cannot withstand uneven compression and rarefaction.
Not when dealing with tempered glass. That would be a concern if it was annealed breakage though.
My sliding glass door shattered couple days ago. Nothing hit it at all. Just shattered out of the blue.

This happened to me but I thought someone broke it. I am still not sure how it shattered because I didn't hear when it happened.
