  • The Philips Lattego 5400/4300 is one of the most popular bean to cup, superautomatic coffee machines on the market. In this video, I do a deep dive review of the product, making espresso and milk based drinks, like a ristretto, caffe crema, latte macchiato and cappuccino. We also inspect the brew group, and I give some tips on temperature setting, as well as what not to do with this machine. Let's see how this popular bean to cup coffee machine does!
    Philips 5400 vs 4300. These machines are both nearly the same. The 5400 has 2 extra colored user profiles, and a few more automated drinks (caffe latte, flat white, lungo and caffe crema).

    I have had the 5400 for about 4 months now, and I love it! Regular coffee is excellent...so much better than the pod coffee makers. I like the LatteGo system because it is so easy to use and clean, and I have found that using 1 or 2 percent milk makes for a better froth than whole milk...go figure, but the Facebook groups I belong to for the Philips machines, seem to agree. Mine never asks me to add water until it is almost empty. I have also kept my grinder setting at the factory 6 and it works just fine for all straight coffees and milk-based drinks. Loved your review!

      If you're looking for genuine espresso, you'd need an espresso machine, rather than superautomatic coffee, but this can make passable drinks much easier. Jura is about as close as it comes to actual espresso in my opinion for superautos.

    I got this machine a few months ago. I really like it. I tend to warm my cup before pouring.
    The flap is for pre ground coffee and to put the coffee cleaning tablets. The machine is not cheap but you do use your own bean’s instead of pods which will save you money in the long run. I am happy with this purchase. 8/10

    I have to say I got one of those like a month and a half ago. I got puck of coffee really watery when using it in the 12 or 6 settings for the grinder. I use it in the 1. Using it like that, an after several coffees (like 4) the pucks are now like little cookies. I will measure those to know approximately how many grams uses per shot. In general makes decent to good coffee. The ristretto, is the one I like more. The milk based ones, are good. The one thing I love the most, is that I have a clean area with good coffees and minimal effort. Also, it lets you play with the ratios and that is something that I appreciate. My wife and I have different tastes on coffee, so, the profiles are a nice feature. In general I would say I am happy with the machine.

      Very nice, thanks for the feedback! I guess I should have tried it for longer on the "2" setting. Maybe the results would have gotten better. For me, increasing the temp to hot made the biggest difference. Cheers!

      @NoZenith 10 месяцев назад +1

      Every two clicks seems to be a noticeable difference. Definitely from where it was set upon delivery, we went down 4 steps I believe and it was a much more potent cup of coffee. I think you have to go through a couple shots to make sure you clean out the old coffee and get a good solid shot of the new Grind size

    I have had the 5400 for about 18 months. I had to return my first one after about 6 months as it was leaking from under the unit and flooding the work top. Retuned to Phillips and was sent back to me with the same issue as was not fixed. I retuned it to Currys as had there extended warranty. The issues I had with Currys i would never but any extended warranty. I have replaced the machine with the same model as I wanted a machine that did everything with out any fuss. Very happy with the machine but I would recommend warming the cups as I don’t find the coffee hot enough. I put a little water in the cup and microwave for 2. Mins for 2 cups. Overall I would definitely recommend very happy with the hassle free coffee. I do find it a little bit of a pain when cleaning.

    I really enjoyed your review of this machine, I'm curious which De'Longhi you have been using at work and how the milk foam compares to this machine. I'm not as experienced in espresso making as you, but I was impressed with the milk froth quality on the De'Longhi super automatic machines I have used.

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  11 месяцев назад +1

      The one we have at work does not have automatic milk frothing. To be honest though, I prefer manually steaming milk with a steam wand. The automatic frothing is simply not as good, on any machine.

    I have had this machine now for over 1 month. Key take aways for me.
    1. The lower the number on grind, the finer the coffee.
    2. The froth foam is way to much for my liking, use half and half or thicker milk and I guarantee the froth milk won't be as foamy if you prefer less foam
    Overall, it's a good machine. Makes great tasting cappuccinos.

    • @celletoronto
      @celletoronto 5 месяцев назад

      For a good foam, they recommend 2%. Not sure if the lactose makes a difference, but the fat content is important. Good microfoam on soymilk though; for vegan milks, it’s better if it’s “barista quality” if the quality of the foam is important.

    Very helpful video, I’ve been brewing with La Valentina semi-auto espresso machine (you may know it as a Royal Falcon product) for about 18 years and thinking about changing gears to the ease of using a bean-2-cup… and considering the Philips 5400 vs the Xelsis LatteDuo which you may know offers the customization feature of delivering “milk first vs espresso first” to produce certain recipes that provide the float with layered separation for a nifty aesthetic and perhaps some enjoyment interaction with your beverage; does the 5400 offer the same feature or customization for achieving the same result without tricking the unit in a two step process? Also, your thoughts of each of these units in terms of bang for the buck when seeking an affordable upscale, more prosumer unit. Thanks.

      Hi there! This does the milk first, then espresso. I don't know anything about the Xelsis you mentioned....anyway, so far I like the Delonghi Magnifica Evo the best of these mid priced units, and the best I have tried is the Jura (E6, E8, etc).

Thought I was going crazy cuz I kept reading the manual that it came with and it just never really spelled that out. Thanks!

    Well, that was interesting, Tom. It does very much feel like a machine for an office and the lack of an independent steam wand ( panarello) would make it a "No" from me but it would be fun to play with. I am glad that you showed us the brew group at the end as it is very, very similar to the one in my Saeco/Philips "Syntia" super automatic. My machine also has a bypass doser but I think it may have been better placed as it is fairly easy to clean out. Part of the maintenance of my machine is to grease moving parts in the brew group occasionally - I assume the same still holds for this newer machine?

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  11 месяцев назад

      I am not sure about greasing intervals...this was a loaner from a friend. But she's had it for a while now, and no issues at all. She likes it!

    • @NoZenith
      @NoZenith 10 месяцев назад

      This is the updated version with the same Brew group of the Philips lattego 3200 and yes you are supposed to rinse out the group at least once a week and wash it once a month and when you wash it you're supposed to put food grade grease in strategic places... don't quote me on that because we bought it for my cousin and it's been like 4 years but I deep dove into the research and I'm pretty sure those were the basic numbers

    • @celletoronto
      @celletoronto 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@NoZenithDoes your cousin still have it? How has it held up after four years with good maintenance?

    • @NoZenith
      @NoZenith 5 месяцев назад +1

      @celletoronto she has done little to no maintenance she just admitted to me. That's a little frustrating cuz it was quite a bit of effort of research to get her the lowest maintenance super automatic on the market and then get with three other family members to make it a bit more affordable cuz I couldn't see spending $800 all at once in this first came out. It was like 799 and I think I snagged it when they had a special for 769 at Seattle Coffee Gear. They had a good warranty and I also purchased an additional filter for it. One of the nice things about these is they have an actual high quality dedicated internal filter so you can dump tap water right into the water tank without having to worry about excessive groundwater mineral. Most filters are something like a Brita filter that don't really help with hard water so you end up having to descale a lot more. If you keep up with the filters on these you virtually never have to descale. It's like once a year she just told me she has never descaled her unit once. The girl drinks a ton of coffee and has company over and has a roommate who also uses it. She hasn't even ever used the food grade grease that came with it to lube up the Brew group. You take that out and rinse it out once a week and then make sure you keep grease on all the pivot Points to make sure it doesn't get worn out. That's the only regular maintenance you really have to do to this unit other than dump out the drip tray and the catch bin. So if that tells you anything about its longevity, she's had one single issue, it was covered under warranty and I don't remember exactly what it was about. She called up Seattle Coffee Gear and it was fixed within the first year or two. I think I got her a 3-year warranty and it's been going strong ever since with absolutely no input.

    How can you be a coffee lover and miss the "Flat White" specialty coffee setting? Love the review otherwise, gives me a good idea about what to expect. I'll keep my old Philips for now, other than the milk system it seems similar. The one I have can also create normal coffee by lowering the pressure, but with the espresso beans and the fine grind the resulting coffee is fresh but not entirely like filtered coffee.

    I have a few friends who bought Saeco automatic machines and initially were happy with their purchases until about 8-12 months and the machines started breaking. This requires sending the machine back in and waiting sometimes months to get it back. Most of these purchases were based on price as a comparable high quality machine is at least double the price. I know two of my friends ended up throwing away the machines and switching brands. You get what you pay for.

      I'm in the Netherlands, where philips is from so maybe that has something to do with it, but we've had this model for over a year now and use it -a lot- (my husband can have 6 double espresso a day quite often, and I have a milk drink every morning). It has worked perfectly for us and continues to go strong with no issues. We do follow the manufacturer recommendations of cleaning the brew group every week, re-greasing it once a month, and doing the oil tab clean once a month. With that and the aqua clean filters we haven't even had to descale it yet and have had no issues with it.
      Mileage may vary, of course, but I think as long as you follow the maintenance recommendations it'll last you a long time.

      I'd say all those Philips machines are very similar, it's just the number of drinks that differ. The BBE is different than the Magnifica Evo. The former is a real espresso machine, while the latter is a superautomatic coffee machine. So, you can expect real espresso from the BBE, while the Magnifica offers convenience.
