  • Found this 1986 Honda Spree (NQ50) for sale the other day on Facebook Marketplace. The guy said that the engine was hydro locking with oil (oil was filling up in the cylinder) and preventing him from being able to kick start it. In this video we go through the engine, carburetor clean, exhaust pipe clean and much more as we try to figure out what caused this scooter to get put away for the last 20 yrs!

    got my 86 (Iowa) with 1400 miles, for free. Hammer-mechanic had it for 20 yrs. and could not get it started. The plug gaped at 1/4th of an inch! I guess he thought he needed more SPARK!! Cleaned the carb, new plug, got the heavy oil out of the air filter, battery, cleaned up the paint - Ace "Banner Red" is an exact match - straightened the turn signals. She looks and runs like new - 66 mpg, zipping around town, for 8 months, now at 2,500 mi. The air/fuel mixture is crucial to running well, oiling the air-filter should be next-to-nothing.

    I think you have it a little backward..the auto bystarter starts off retracted which allows additional fuel to flow at startup and during warmup. After a few minutes the bystarter heats up and the plunger extends a bit, cutting off the additional flow of fuel. Your fix will allow for easy starting but you may be running very rich after warmup.
    Nice job getting the scoot up and running, again!

    Hey there, just some words if advice from a fellow Spree owner! I noticed that the previous owner must have blocked off the oil pump, and this is ok but you need to grind off the gears on the pump because if it isn't moving the gears will grind and cause metal shavings in the crank case! Also put the exhaust over a fire for a few hours rotating and banging on the ground every once and a while to clean it out. It also sounds like the carb needs tuning. Get her going good! Love to see these get going

    Bought a nice 87 a couple years ago, oil had leaked past the check valve and filled the crankcase. I alternated between kicking it over and pulling into a wheelie position to drain everything. Eventually it ran and after a while I could get the rpms up without fear of hydroloc and bending the rod. Smoked like James Bond for a few miles until the oil burned off. I add oil to the tank before a ride and suck left over out with a large syringe when done, if it's going to sit more then three days.

    You can just rebuild the starter. Use a Suzuki LT-80 starter rebuild kit. It has the same parts you need. I see you picked up a set of noiseguy's carbon reeds. Good choice. I'm not sure what fuel mix ratio you are using, but on a Spree, you are best off using 40:1 if doing a premix. I'd suggest keeping the pump though. As for the oil shooting out the pipe, I'm guessing that came from the crankcase not the pipe. More then likely what had happened is the O-ring inside the pump dried out and cracked so the person decided to run premix (probably 32:1), and slowly saturated the bottom of the crank case with unused oil. Another reason to run it 40:1 if going premix. The Spree is finicky and the pump runs linear to rpm. Meaning around idle range, it's putting out around 50:1, but when revving to say 6,000 rpm or higher, will put out 32:1... more like 36:1. Sprees are fun to build up. Mine now pushes over 4Hp and will do 52mph@ 11,000rpm. Here's mine on the dyno at 8,000rpm: ruclips.net/video/U1MUmUUJbbs/видео.html

    • @Mechanic_kid
      @Mechanic_kid  3 года назад

      Pretty busy but might be able to for you. Try this and lmk if it works: turn your air mixture all the way in and then back it out 1 1/2 turns. That should be about perfect. If that doesn’t work your carburetor probably need to be removed and cleaned. How’s it run currently?? What’s wrong with it??

    • @zkmitchell
      @zkmitchell 3 года назад +1

      @@Mechanic_kid ran good when I got it running after a couple years. But wouldn’t idle properly. Got it to finally idle but would bog down under full acceleration. Messed with idle mixture screw and hasn’t been right since. Bogs bad under full throttle as has trouble starting. Now I can’t get it to start at all. It’s actually an 85 aero 50 so basically same engine but no Kickstarter. I’m going to clean the carb and go from there. Has good compression and ran awesome at first.

    • @Mechanic_kid
      @Mechanic_kid  3 года назад

      @@zkmitchell definitely carb related. Ya start by cleaning it good! I usually remove the bystarter (electric choke) and put a latex rubber cover over top and then put the cracked back on it to hold it down. I think I show this in this video if not one of my other scooter vids. After you clean it, put your hand over the end of the carb where he air filter goes and crank it until you feel gas on your hand. Then just try to start like normal and should fire up. I’ve done basically everything you did (except get to the cylinder) I have never done this before so I’m trying to learn as I go, and I can get the thing started now, by spraying starting fluid in the air intake, but I can’t get it to stay running. When I give it throttle, it cuts out. Any advice on what I should do next?

    • @Mechanic_kid
      @Mechanic_kid  2 года назад +3

      Ok so it’s not getting fuel. Make sure your carburetor is very clean. Pull out all the jets and spray carb clean through all the little holes. If you get that clean and it still doesn’t start I would say it’s your bystarter (electric choke). Take part of a latex glove and use the bracket to basically cap of the top of the hole. Those are the two most common problems causing these to not run. I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes👍🏼

    • @TylerPeck
      @TylerPeck 2 года назад +1

      @@Mechanic_kid ok, so I cleaned the carb really well, won’t stay running.
      I tried plugging the bystarter with a latex glove, that didn’t work either.
      I got a new bystarter, still won’t stay.
      I am not sure how those vacuum petcocks work…but I think maybe that could be the issue? If I take the fuel line off of the carb, there is no fuel. I know that there shouldn’t be, since it is a vacuum somehow, but if I am not sure how to test it. I tried sucking on the vacuum line, and nothing came out the fuel line, same when blowing on the line. Are you familiar with those and how to test them?

    • @Mechanic_kid
      @Mechanic_kid  2 года назад +1

      @@TylerPeck that would be the last thing that it could be! I’ve had one fail before. Your supposed to be able to suck on the vacuum hose and then fuel should go to the carb. I think those are only like $15 so wouldn’t hurt to toss on and see if that fixes it. You could also try hand choking it. Take off the air cleaner and cover with your hand about 90% of the carburetor hole. Should start right up and stay running if you keep your hand there. As it heats up you could maybe just cover 50%. If it starts starving for fuel go back to covering it 90%... sometimes these thing just need to run a little bit when they’ve been sitting. Hope that helps! Lmk how it goes

    • @TylerPeck
      @TylerPeck 2 года назад +1

    The bistarter is actually a bimetallic-element choke: When u start, and it´s received 4-5minutes of current, it will heat and expand that much, in order to clog (with its pointy pin) the additional start-fuel-line, that cares for a richer fuel/air-ratio-mix (or, relatively seen, "chokes" the air-ratio in the mix) when coldstarting. This element doesn´t know if your engine is ready for the "normal" fuel/air-ratio-mix after 4-5minutes, so, depending on how cold the element and your engine begin (and considering the 2 reach their targer Temps with different speeds), it may shut off a bit earlier or later than optimal... The problem with them isn´t the thingy itself, but the flimsy mounting-bracket changing its geometry (under the pressure of the expanding thingy) and becoming loose, so, the thingy cannot work properly, its pin misses the hole it has to plug to. Run 12V along it, and watch it expand. If it doesn´t, then it´s broken.

      Try this if you haven,t , Remove carb, remove the float bowl and remove the main jet ( flat head screwdriver). Now from inside the carb using screwdriver push out the brass emulsion tube downwards you see in the center , pushes out where the main jet is. Clean that brass tube and all the tiny holes in it.Clean out the main jet and float (needle and seat). Your starting jet or pilot jet is at the base of the small brass tube right beside the main jet and must be cleaned out to run proper.The only way i found to clean this very small hole inside is using a ultra sonic cleaner. Not very expensive and work great for many things. Degreaser worked for me in it 50/50 with water. Now make sure you can blow air through that small brass tube, i slide a small tight fit hose over it to blow through. Bolt er back up and hopefully enjoy some rips on the powerhouse spree. I have a blue 84 up in Ontario. Ride on.......

    • @Mechanic_kid
      @Mechanic_kid  3 года назад

      shawn lesarge I have not! I would look on eBay. The spree starter should be the same as the Honda Elite 50 SB50 as well. You might even be able to make a little 50cc scooter starter fit, I’ve seen the same looking starter on many little scooters such the Yamaha Riva Razz but not positive if it would fit. Hope this helps👍🏼

      shawn lesarge they sell the bystarter on eBay for like $10. Basically universal on all these scooters from the 80s. They are cheaply made tho and I’ve had new ones stop working very fast. I found it easier to just block off the top. Hope this helps
