  • When I posted build log photos of the IB-24 stealth build on social media a lot of people were quick to give me multiple reasons as to why this is a bad idea, why it's not going to work, how I'm going to damage the sub, and so on.
I could spend way too much time and effort explaining the build or I could just make a quick video.
    Here's that quick video.

I goofed. It was the HS-24 that was installed and caused the initial outrage about the motor hanging below the floor of the car.

i have been installing sound systems for 30 years in custom homes and cars. Your design is spot on. I watched some of your earlier videos. My first thought was that you would need some sort of mesh to stop spray coming into the bottom chamber of the sub . Then you posted this video doing exactly what I was thinking. Looks like you got it all figured out to me. dont listen to little kids who dont understand what you are doing. It is nice of you to try and explain it to them. They just dont understand that the speaker suspension is built to operate free air with out an enclosure. Its a very different type of speaker then they are used to dealing with. Looks cool to me

Technically this is an "Aperiodic Membrane" setup. That's the ONLY WAY this particular system would work with that BIG ASS HOLE in the bottom of the trunk. The woofer has to "Breathe" through that Resistive Material, which fools it into thinking it's in a MUCH LARGER BOX.
A Standard IB set-up uses a traditional baffle-board to separate the front & rear waves of the speakers. Think "Free-Air Woofers" that use the trunk as the Enclosure.

Another consideration. Since the sub is in a sealed cavity, it's like taking an upside down glass and submerging it in water. The water is displaced by the air in the cavity. So even "IF" you submerged the car in water, I'd bet the sub wouldn't get wet. Even if water did get by the mesh and screen it would air dry quickly after. Could just bump the sub to push the moisture out too lol

I have been a car audio nut since the mid 90's. I am looking forward to see and hear the final install. Nobody has really done decent infinite baffle subs in a car in a loooong time. That 24" is going to look badass moving around in that hatch.

Most sound offs or shows I have been to are DB contests where the vehicles sound like a giant rattle can from outside. The only infinite baffles Ive seen are either some smaller subs in the rear deck or 12's attached to a baffle behind the rear seat. Looks cool but sound is ehhh.

Hey man, love the channel. Might help to focus on the actual building of the system, wiring, measuring and installing the equipment.. Don't waste your time on dummies that do not understand how things work...you will be spending most time explaining things instead of making progress.. Maybe if you don't know...there is a good channel PSSOUND that has a lot of info on IB setups..And he only uses one layer of rainguard on the outside of the vehicle..You might want to reconsider the foam layer...for the subwoofer to breathe more? And if the layers aren't completely sealed it might suck up moister and i am not afraid for moister ingress but more the saturation of the foam and the woofer breathing less..

This barrier seems to work very well at stopping water from entering. But I would have two concerns, 1) that "actually beating on the system" in a wet environment, would create massive suction that could "force water through that barrier under very high pressure"..... and 2) "any" restriction of airflow would affect the performance of the sub. Absolutely LOVE this build though. I think I have a very simple solution. Don't take it out in the rain :)

Hydrolocking the subwoofers motor movement. He dismissed it.

Once that material gets wet it will drastically inhibit the airflow through the layers. It will hydroloc the sub. It will no longer be infinite baffle. More like an apperiodic membrane. If your lucky. It Could just freeze/arrest the cone movement. It may only work in dri conditions. No way i would run the risk of running that system with wet layers like it seems you are suggesting.

Quickly is nice. But way to slow to be able to keep a consistent respose curve from the subwoofer.
The water will drastically change the subs characteristics during playing.
He can only take it out when weather is dry.. he should have inverted it and left the hydrophobic mesh out of the system completely.
