"I Didn't Mean to Turn You On" is the debut single written by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and originally performed by American singer Cherrelle in 1984. In 1986, "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On" was covered by English singer Robert Palmer. Palmer's cover fared better on the pop chart while Cherrelle's version was a hit on the R&B chart.

The phrase originated as mark of respect for the white musician who could shine even in a genre like soul that is so deeply a part of the black American experience. Whether the white performer, himself, actually had blue eyes is not relevant; what matters is that the eye color in question was considered to be a physical characteristic exclusive to white folk.

Forget about the visuals---this is one the HIPPEST Robert Palmer songs recoreded, and there were very many. Definiion of hip: fast, (stylish) attractive, current, and outdistances competitors. You can usually know it when you are on the dance floor and don't have time to thing about how cool you are, you just are, lol.
