  • Short video tutorial for carving a wood spirit in cottonwood bark. Using hand tools such as knives, palm gouges, files, and and sandpaper I sculpt a mystical wood spirit sitting in the bark of a tree.

    Great carving. I carve fairy houses and light houses in cottonwood bark. I like how you take smaller cuts with your tools. I use a similar method and have been told I need to take bigger cuts. I smile back and say I like to take my time and relax when carving. Please carve what ever you like and I will watch.

    Made my day finding you. Meant to be because your voice and approach to carving poetry into wood brings me back to my childhood of Pinocchio. The Heart inside the wooden chest as Gepetto tirelessly and relentlessly creates someone He could Love just as the Lord did for us.. Thank you for your gentleness and keep making beauty around the madness of the world… your new viewer aka “ForeverBoy” 🦁 👊🏼

    Beautful face! The most beautiful art to me is sculpture of the best of humanity that captures us at what always feels what is possible and those we look up to and cherish among us. Beautiful art of beautiful human Beings seems to remind us of all we can be and holds back the dark spirits of this world especially that we have much to fight for and be thankful for to God in heaven the most beautiful of all whose faces we will one day see again for eternity.

    I have another theory why they might like faces of old, bearded men.
    From my own stint in drawing faces completely from imagination with no reference material, I strived to learn drawing very symmetrical, smooth and beautiful faces.
    But I noticed how "beautiful" faces are kind of boring to draw. The penwork is just so subtle and non-dramatic.
    But drawing old, wrinkly faces with facial hair or even scarred and weatherbeaten skin, those faces are FUN to draw because you can go absolutely nuts with the linework.
    I can imagine that it must be the same for carving and sculpting.

    • @wilkinsonwoodcarving
      @wilkinsonwoodcarving  2 месяца назад +2

      I agree. I am also a fan of whimsical books/movies and wizards and tree people just fit in that style!

      @@wilkinsonwoodcarving I can imagine.
      For the same reasons I also liked to draw demonic/possessed faces and also plenty of craniums 😄
      Always wondered what it would be like to carve or sculpt a cranium. 🤔

    Nice! I make these but I use a dremel tool. I find it easiest to carve the nose and and then base everything else around that aswell, I can never get the beard to look just how I want it to tho. I've also only made about 20 of them so I'm fairly new at it.

      Thanks for the kind words and for subscribing! I harvested this bark with a friend up in Vermont a couple of summers ago and just lucked out. I have heard carvers having luck on eBay but it's always a gamble. Just curious, what makes it difficult to carve?

      @@wilkinsonwoodcarving some of the Cottonwood bark I got had a very dark exterior, almost black. And it was not soft and easy to carve. In some of the other videos I have seen on carving Cottonwood bark, it appeared to me that the Cottonwood bark with a gray exterior surface seem to be the finest . I suppose Cottonwood bark differs from region to region. I'll keep looking, thank you for your response. Best wishes

      Hi! Thanks for watching and reaching out. I've been carving for 10 years. Like all things, there is definitely a learning curve but a great way to start is to get a decent knife that stays sharp. There are a ton of great RUclips tutorials/books for beginners projects. I'd start there then if you like it, start investing in some new tools. Have fun and enjoy it's a great hobby.

I have a shiny chrome hunting knife, a forestry axe and some harder woods in my area that i collect from the street. Hard to even carve detail into the wood, let alone my own name. Any beginner suggestions?
