you had me sold when you said it was coffee
I carve a lot of found wood, carry a small folding saw in my truck. Fun carving, I will carve a few of these while waiting for my grandson to get out of karate, they don’t want to many people inside because of Covid so I wait. This video will help thank you!
You sound like a great father.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Something that's simple to do to get your feet wet but still look like something when you're done.
I'm brand new in my whittling journey, only been carving for a few months, but its so exciting that the first video I watch on carving is done on willow wood. There was a massive willow tree in the town I grew up in that just recently was struck by lightning, splitting it in half and dropping a huge mess of branches right off the side of the road. Well I've been carving long enough to know not to pass up free wood, and its especially nice because now I have a little piece of a tree that was already old when I was very young. I carved a little mushketeer (anthropomorphic mushroom guy who's wielding a branch like a sword) and then a great horned owl that was blessed with some really interesting grays and browns running through it. I hope to learn a lot from you!!
I like wood carving art thank you
went out into the woods earlier to walk off some stress, found a really cool stick and brought it home. then i remembered why i bought that folding knife years ago and started whittling off the bark. now im in bed about to turn in and imagining all the coffee, olive oil, and beeswax scented old spirits i'll be gifting to friends from now on. your tip about observing people and imitating their lines hit like an epiphany, too. thanks for the lovely video (and for not using any other tools but the knife). i'll be coming back to your channel once i got the hang of the old guy
you probably dont care at all but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account..?
I somehow lost my login password. I would love any help you can give me
@Warren Oakley Instablaster =)
@Axton Fletcher i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
I see it takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Axton Fletcher It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thanks so much, you saved my account!
@Warren Oakley you are welcome =)
very cool video.. seems 99% of whittling and carving videos on youtube involve power tools and dremels. I like to do things like this on the go. while out on a walking trail and what not. thank you for the inspiration
Great video, subbed 👍
It is always good to see someone share their knowledge of whatever they do. I have always said that the knowledge I have can never be taken away from me But by me sharing that knowledge and possibly have someone a bit better is always good. Don't hoard your knowledge , share it and help someone become better at whatever that task is.
I went through it twice, cut for cut, and you really helped me figure it out. I feel good about this design now. Thank you!
Hello from Alaska! That was a well detailed video, so thank you. My husband and I are looking for a bit of a Winter hobby and have been collecting wood. Can't wait to get started. I LOVE the coffee stain versus 'varnish'. Thanks.
Awesome carving thank you new subscriber new Whittier
Thank you! I just started carving, and all the videos I saw relied on squared, cut wood. I needed to see how to use a tree branch as the medium. - Excellent presentation!
Thanks - this answered a lot of my questions about carving woodspirits on sticks. I appreciate it!
thanks bro! enjoyed this
thank you sir
I did my first wood carving today -and follow your video. Don't get magical, but was fun and try a new tomorrow.. Great video. ❤
Very Cool
Thanks for share...
I love the final touch with coffee ... simply and efficient!
Wow, thank you! I feel like I can do this one.
Nicely done
Good job.... like what you said about "kiss" ( keep it simple s....) makes whittling more fun.
Brilliant guide, I've just got into whittling and this helped me out a lot!
Thank you for your video. It was helpful in my quest to learn to carve.
Great tutorial, I'm looking forward to your other videos
Thanks so much. Only recently started whittling and found this video great fun and really helpful.
A wonderful tutorial. Thank you.
Just starting carving and only have a stanley knife but Christmas is coming so hopefully there'll be knives involved this year! This was a really helpful video and I've done my first wood spirit. Many thanks for all the tips here.
Well done. Thanks
Great job! Thanks for the video.
Just ran across your video, you make it look so easy I'm going to give this a try I've been wanting to try my hand at carving, winter is setting in here in Michigan here in the us.
You seam to be a very patient person and not being in a hurry is probably a good quality to have for carving.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and your fine tuning techneaks.
Nice little project thanks for showing, just found you so liked and subd ,Ant from Wales.
Loved this video!!! Just what I needed!!!
This was a fantastic vid to watch and learn, a big thankyou and thx for sharing,,,cheers
You are most welcome, thank you for watching!
Nice explanation to follow will have to give it another go
Thank you so much. Your pace is excellent for beginners.
Great job. They look very nice. I make these a little bit bigger about 3in.Wx 8inL and I hang them from trees in the woods as I'm hiking or bushwhacking to kind of spread the spirit plus I can imagine the look on peoples faces when they happen to lookup and see one hanging from a bush or tree.
Thanks so much for this detailed tutorial.
I thoroughly enjoyed it
BRAVO... Nicely done!!

Love your work bro👍☘️
Obrigado!
Abraço desde o Brasil!🇧🇷
Sir you are a gifted Giver thanks for sharing your time and talents, I really enjoyed this tutorial I've only been carving since December but this carving came out really exceptionally nice
good point about tuning the carving.
Very cool video. My very first carving was with an X-acto knife in a piece of Manzanita. It was a wood spirit, but I actually carved the whole body, including the legs and feet. I gave it to my Uncle who was an Art professor at the time. Manzanita is a very hard wood from the hills of California and Nevada. Subscribed.
Very well done and helpful! Thank you very much!
Been woodworking for awhile, stumbled on your channel and for the first time in a while I was wow'd and inspired to try something completely new. I had been thinking about making some walking sticks and if I can incorporate something like this that would be awesome. New subscriber as of today!
That's great to hear, thank you so much!
I've used black tea as a stain as well. A bit more "red".
Приветствую. Огромное спасибо за видео. Я начинающий резчик, и ваше видео очень кстати.👍👍👍👍
I have learned more from you then all others,I've watched ; Thank you! much!!
Thank you so much, that means alot!
What a brilliant instructional video. Thank you, I can’t wait to give it a try. Liked & subscribed
Great Stuff! Thanks for sharing!
A trick from model making that might be worth trying - add some washing up liquid to the coffee, it's a surfactant so will break down the surface tension so it will run off the raised edges and lie more in the recesses instead. It doesn't take a lot, just a little squirt then give it a stir. You can also use alcohol, most model makers use IPA as a surfactant when making washes, but any detergent will also work and it's cheaper. I'm not sure how much of an effect it will have here though since you're putting it on a porous surface so it might just soak in rather than run off, but it can't hurt to try
Oh and another trick to seal it - PVA glue with lots of water and a little of your surfactant of choice then put it in a spray bottle and mist it, because it's been watered down it dries to a clear, very thin but plasticky skin, if you do it right you can barely tell it's there but it's pretty effective at sealing everything in and protecting it, and it gives a more natural look than varnishes
Thank you for sharing your great videos 😀
Thank you for the comment, really glad you like them 🙂
Thanks very good
سپاسگزارم خیلی خوب بود
good instruction...
great video thanks
Thank you!
Beautiful.
Do you offer any in-person carving workshops?
Not yet but it is something I'm looking into 👍
I’ve watched quite a few wood spirit videos and this by far is my favorite yet! I think I’ll actually be able to make it happen with your technique. Why doesn’t this video have a million views!
Wow thank you so much! That means alot ❤😊
Great video! Hmmm at age 64 I think I’m gonna give this a go!
You're never too young to try something new!! 👍
Thank you!
Very nice Dave you did such a nice job explaining and showing how to make those fine cuts on a stick.
Thank you very helpful for me a beginner👍👍 I will subscribe too.
Thanks so much for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, just getting into carving and looking for stuff to get started. Thanks.
Well done sir! I will be trying this.
Thank you!
Look forward to seeing more from you.
Thanks there's more in the pipeline, just had to take a break lately, will be back on it soon!
Awesome video, I just started about a month ago, ad I so am grateful about your remark o the eyes. I still have rough spots on the mouth also but it seems slowly but surely it is coming along. Thank you
Great to hear, thanks for the feedback! It really is a hobby where you never stop learning. Thats what makes it so addictive!
Lol stitches... try some pine or spruce resin...have it right beside your work station. Pretty wicked cool stuff... smear some in a fresh cut, it wont bleed much and it will begin healing it as well as cleaning it from bacteria, fungi, viruses etc. I'm a new carver but also got into the natural healing of plants and saved a lot of blood loss because i did lol. Haha 1st time with a new stihl limb saw it skipped and tore a good bit out of my hand... it was nasty, but not deep. I also pack my bandage with this stuff. A salve is what i do.
Thank you for the simplicity of this carving my grandson is just learning to carve and whittle and he found this was just what he was looking for.Keep up the great job.
good job
What are the protective gloves you are wearing?
They are Blackrock, level 5 cut resistant gloves. Thanks for watching 👍
Awesome video, very informative and simple! Just starting out on faces, I began whittling by making a lovespoon from a piece of green hazel.
Earned yourself a new sub 👍😊
I would love to make this! I have whittling knives. At the beginning you said the sticks had dried out. Do they have to be dried out to whittle them, and if so, for how long should they dry?
Thanks for showing us your method, it really helps us newbies. I'm guessing you learned a few things from Doug Linker? Your style is similar.
Cool.
;)
Looks good . what kind of wood do you have. Jim's wood shop.
I really enjoyed this video. Have carved three figures following your technique, they came out great!
Great to hear, thanks!!
Watched your video and got hooked sent off for a beginners knife set and it's just arrived , Will see how i go and hopefully send off for a Flexcut knife . Video's are Brill Dave keep up the great work mate . Have you done a video on sharpening and stropping the blade ? Cheer's Paul .
Thats great to hear! Thanks so much for the feedback and yes, my first video was about sharpening ruclips.net/video/rscs9N6RNzA/видео.html . Happy carving!
What diameter of a branch. THANK YOU
Thanks for this video, really useful for someone just starting. Where did you get your safety gloves from please?
They're from my local hardware store, the brand name is Blackrock. Whatever you look for just be sure they are comfy, tight and with a high cut resistance. Hope this helps!
What kind of wood did you use
I think this was willow, thanks for watching!
What wood are you using?
I think this was an old piece of willow branch 👍 thanks for watching!
So my knives got delivered, so I just had a go at this. It's not perfect, but a decent first go.
Well done! We all start at one time!
I would really like to know what kind of wood you're using. I'm having trouble finding wood soft enough that it's easy to cut but hard enough that it doesn't crumble.
Most woods I use are sycamore, bay or willow as that's what I have access to. Keeping it soft is really down to keeping it green (like it's just been cut) if your wood feels a bit hard and it's looking dry, soak it underwater for a few hours. I keep all my wood submerged in water until I need it.
@@SpoonsandSpirits Ok thank you. I can try to get some of those woods. I have pine and maple and maple just doesn't work well for me. I soak my wood for about a day before I use it, but I will try using green wood too.
Great job had a go struggled at first but got there in the end still watching because I missed a few bits all so where did you get your gloves from
Mine are nice and cheap from the local hardware shop, just make sure they have a high level of cut resistance and I make sure mine are as skin tight as possible so I can still have good control. 👍
Where did you buy the Black Rock carving gloves, please? They look so comfortable. I checked Black Rock website, but none looked like yours.
Mine are from my local hardware store, you could also try trade stores. If you can't find them, have a chat with someone in store they may be able to order some in for you, if not they could order in a selection for you to try, some suppliers are happy to send samples if it means they get sales.
Thanks for your video. I tried the coffee stain and it looked really nice when it was wet. But when it dried, the color was gone. Any idea what went wrong?
Could try a thicker coffee mix (ie less water more grounds) or ive sometimes applied multiple coats until I'm happy with the finsh
How in the world can you do that with gloves on? lol. Nice video man!
When I'm carving I always have a bottle of super glue handy, quicker and cheaper than a trip to the ER for stitches. 🥴
Styptic pencil's good too. Stops the bleeding pretty quickly. 👍
What kind of knife you using
It's a flexcut detail knife 👍
Well I tried 😫 I'll keep trying. 1st time and I can honestly see a wood spirit in what I did 😊
I was doing this with a dull knife, and I cut myself badly. No crocheting for me for a week or two. Make sure you wear carving gloves and have a sharp knife.
Trop bien dommage pas en français 👍
Can I buy this?
I think it would be very cool to see you carve a caricature of your own face
Ooh good idea, I'll have a go see what happens lol
Do you have a favourite fruit tree pruning that you like to carve Dave?
Not really yet, most fruits are good to carve. Recently I have been enjoying Bay, not a fruit I know but very nice to carve.
This is so fucking hard!!!!
Are there any parts in particular that you are struggling with?
Awspme
Not as easy as you make it look !
