I'm disabled and spend most of my day in a chair. I've always wanted to whittle little wood spirits like this and your videos take away all the guess work on how to do it and what tools I need. Thank you for all you do for those of us beginning the hobby. Most appreciated
I too, am disabled spend most of my days in chair, reclined. It’s spinal cord injury, and then wood carving and whittling is probably done the force that keeps me alive. I create something that make other people happy. This coming year I’m going to give ornaments to two of the nursing homes they live here in town for the clients to have something for Christmas ornaments
Thank you for sharing this! I'm a 35 year old knitter-crocheter with co-ordination issues, and wanted to try my hand at some new crafts, something completely different! I've been curious about whittling for ages and really wanted to give it a try after watching a guy whittle some mushrooms a while ago on youtube, but I'm dyspraxic and was nervous I'd struggle with a knife. Then today I stumbled across this video and it explains it so well and shows your working nice and clearly. These little dudes are really cute, what a beautiful little craft!
Im still a 73 yr old beginner, but this is by far one of the best videos I’ve seen. Thanks so much. Been trying to do all my raving with my knife, but you have just upped my skill level. Thanks again!!
At 73yrs - sorry, now 74, you shouldn’t be raving anymore. Leave that to the youngsters 😊… Just kidding, hope you are doing well and enjoying your hobby. I’m getting up there myself and just hoping I can keep going a lot longer.
❤im 75 years old, and I'm tired of fancy realistic carving. These are great quick fun projects to give people to create goodwill and smiles for all ages. That is a pretty nice pencil for work. Thank you 😊
I love your simple and effective teaching method, especially the pen/paper "slides." Very nicely done and your carvings are amazing. I've just subscribed and plan to watch all your videos and really improve my novice carving skills. Thanks so much for taking the time and using your skills for the rest of us!
Hi I have just started whittling about 5 months ago and just did this whittle and it turned out awesome, I’m so pumped about the carving. Finished with watered down brown and then antique solution. This is the best wood spirit I’ve done, great confidence builder. Thank you very much.
I would like to suggest you make a complete video on sharping knifes and gouges. I have been following this video and carving my own wood sprit. To be honest, having a hard time of it. Also let me add that I have been chip carving since the late 90's and my chip knives cut wood very well. After struggling to get decent cuts with my Flexcut detail knife i brought out one of my chip knives and solved my problem. Even though the flexcut seemed Sharpe and I had stropped it numerous times, it didn't seem to cut right. I spent some time this morning and did a proper sharpening and the knife now cuts well. The first lesson in my first chip carving class was sharpening a knife. I made all the difference in my desire to peruse this hobby. I firmly believe the sharping of a knife is key to enjoying the process..
I guess I need to remember where I am putting my comments. I know you already did a video on sharpening. sorry for my placement of comments. If I could remove this comment I would.
thank you for doing a back to basics video. I've only been carving about a year and a half and I have watched many carving videos to try to advance my skills. What I have discovered is I'm trying too hard to get good at it instead of actually "enjoying" my hobby. By watching your videos I realized I need to step back and relax and enjoy just like it appears that you do. Thanks for sharing your gift!
Straight to the point, great explanation, and great camera work. Really good job! I normally don’t watch entire videos. However, you held my attention the whole time.
Thank you for the measurable objectives at the beginning. I love the video, but that bit at the beginning made me autosubscribe. Looking forward to learning a new skill. Thank you!
I've seen several methods whittling this face. The steps you choose in this order, are way easier for me to remember! Also the way you implement each step is Awesome, Thank You!
Its Oct 17, 2023 i just found you an have only made (so far) 2 small items this is #3 I di watch the video the while way through then thought i can do this and OFF I WENT!! I did follow you step by step then paused an did reverse, hold ,laughed at myself but kept going!! I love these little gems!! Now off to do the hair!! Wavy n straight lines! Thank You.
Sliced my finger 4 days ago on a very very sharp carving knife. Gonna be wearing the sparkly metal gloves next time I pick up my knives!😮 Fortunately no major damage
Your carvings are amazing! Found you on Instagram and had to buy the WCI edition featuring your little Christmas gnomes! It would be great if you could do a video about your more complex wood spirits (quickly shown in that video). They are by far the coolest one ive seen
Thank you. This is my first proper carving. As you said you use these for painting examples, well, I´m going to use these on the different stainers i have.
This is such a wonderful video! I've always wanted to know how to make my carving look like an old tree. And, I so appreciate you posting a link to the gouge you used. Wondering what kind of glove that is you're using, I've never seen one like that & is that a good one? Thank You !!
@@dywoodcarving Thank You so much for the glove info! I can't seem to find one that the index finger isn't a mile to long LOL! I'm really having fun with a carving set I got for Christmas thanks to your video.
Made one of these on a tiny 1/4”x1/4”x1” wood rectangle. Wouldn’t recommend doing that-still came out pretty cool though. Will definitely make a bigger one at some point
Nice job! Those look so good! Especially painting all those colours. Thanks for making this video showing how to do it. If I can't get ahold of a 1/4" 60, what would be better, a 45 or 70?
What kind of wood you are using and what kind is better to start with? Thanks for answer and this guide, I do my try, looks very relaxing and nice hobby

Is it viable/safe to regarding to better shape? Have you any videos on using different V-Gouge shapes?
I believe you are referring to the different angles of the v gouges, they do come in a variety of angles and sizes. The one in the video is a 1/4 inch, 60 degree true V tool. I have a video that explains the differences in v tools, including sizes, angles and the difference between a "true" v or "soft" v. @dywoodcarving - thank you for this. Amazing video and guidance. I’m struggling to find a v tool like yours (palm, with that blade length). Do you mind sharing the tool brand/name that you’re using here? 🙏
This is really lovely. Sorry if I missed, but what wood is you're using? I picked up some wood from a hardware store (dont know what it is) and it's so hard to carve.
Nice video. A possibly dumb question: I assume the 3/4X3/4X4 inch block is basswood? (This might have been made clear in other videos, but it wasn’t mentioned here.)
I have never watched a video on whittling before this one. I am very interested but can’t seem to find a v tool like this easily online. Any suggestions on where to get this in the UK?
You can see my video on v tools for some more options. I'm guessing you could find one from flexcut that should work ok for your purposes, but I'm less familiar with where to purchase in the UK.
@@dywoodcarving thanks, I had a look at that but still can’t find a v tool other than the drakes one which unfortunately has a 6 month waiting list at the moment! Hello I've just found your channel. I'm just getting into wood work (carving) can I ask what type of wood this is. At the moment I only have some basswood l thanks
Is it normal to have the wood become really chippy and splintery as you use the v tool? Also how hard do you have to push with the v tool? It is so hard to push using basswood
It shouldn't really be hard to push through, but may take some practice. I wouldn't say splintering is normal, but it is possible with the v tool because one side is usually carving against the grain while the other is carving with the grain. I explain this more in my video on v tools along with some tips for making clean cuts.
They are painted with watered down acrylic paints and then finished with an antiquing solution. I have a video on painting and another on.antiquing that shows the process.
I used a Drake VTool and Deep Holler knife in the video. I have a video on just v tools and a video on how to choose a knife if your interested in more detail on either.
Some wood will definitely work better than others. I use and recommend basswood. It is soft and easy to carve, but holds detail well. Pine, butternut, Birch would generally work better than harder woods like maple, walnut, or cherry (which can be carved, but are more difficult).
The tool is from Drake Tools. If you are looking for a more affordable and easy to find option I recommend Flexcut. I have a video on V tools with more info.
