I hope you understand how much this new approach is going to help people like myself start to carve, I love the idea of a knife and a peice of wood with time can become something you can give the grandchildren. Thank you from the UK.

Doug, Just to let you know , there are good teachers and bad teachers and you are a WONDERFUL, GREAT TEACHER. I Love to watch your videos and carve from them. Please keep up with your videos. You are a Great carver.
I live in New Zealand, born and raised. I'm turning 70 yrs in a short couple of months. Here in NZ we dont usually whittle. Carve yes, but whittle no. I live in a motorhome fulltime and have access to plenty of all sorts of timber, where pine is easy access roadside, so plenty of material. Have always had a 'bent' towards working in wood and bought a tri-set of Flexcut knives and a knife strop for sharpening. Then I watched some tutorials with yours included. BY FAR, your easy and methodical explanations and demos kick-started me and now have quite a few carvings to my credit. I took to it like a duck to water and am enjoying myself immensely, thanks to your tutorials. So! Much obliged Doug Linker - you're the man!
Some people go through life wondering if they made a difference. I just want you to know you have. Carving with your tutorial videos has helped me in many ways. Thank you
When I started wood carving, my dad gifted me a subscription to Woodcarving Illustrated magazine. My first ones had holes punched in the spine. My dad passed away on December 17, 2021 from complications due to several health issues. My mom has continued with the gift subscription. I've marked pages of carving projects that I want to do. I keep them in order by the oldest magazine to the most recent one. Also, I've ordered several other carving books and bought some when I attended the Artistry in Wood. Your little carvings are so cute!
Thanks to you, Doug, I am becoming a favorite GrandPop and Uncle. My guys are obviously based on your tutorials, but they have just enough of my style to make me proud, too.
Im just getting into carving and love your content so far ! Thank you for teaching! ❤ Sidenote, it's like all the little dudes gathered to witness the creation of the new fellow, except the one not interested 😅
Awesome! I've carved mostly with chainsaws and power tools. Theres a simple beauty and satisfaction in creating something with just a knife. Its reminiscent of catching small native brook trout. Fishing can be very complicated with boats and gear, but I'm drawn to the simple beauty of those small stream trout that speak to the essence of fishing. Thanks for so generously sharing your techniques and knowledge
Hi Doug. I love the idea of this new series. I love how you talk us through step by step. I’ve been carving now for 18 months after stumbling across one of your videos on RUclips. I’ve use your techniques to help me create carvings of my own. I love what you do here on your channel & thought I’d use this opportunity to let you know how appreciative a lot of us are for the content you create that enables a lot of people to have a go at something I never thought I’d be able to do. Huge respect.
Doug , thank you so much for the time you spend showing us how to become woodcarvers . I live in England and saw one of your vids 4 years ago ,having just retired decided to give it a go . The Santa you did has become a favourite of mine and they are very popular with friends and family . Thanks to you i have discovered a hobby that gives me great pleasure so please carry on , i hope you realise how much you are appreciated , 👍
Yo Doug, First I want to thank you for getting me started doing carvings. And as a possible help toward carvers using a longer than two inch stock, why carve the little dude upside down. That would make the hat closest to the holding hand and clear the feet from the stock. Carving the hat could done after cutting him from the working stock. Hope I said that clearly. Keep ‘‘em coming. I’m carving them for my grandchildren. Thanks again, Mike
This series is exactly what we need Doug!! So awesome. I definitely have to practice on making 1 cuts in areas like the pants as I always find myself trying to make things too perfect and end up recutting numerous times and winding up with way too deep of a hole and mess!
Doug, I’ve loved watching you push your craft over the last few years and I also enjoy watching these simple tutorials. It’s really great to have you as a resource, teacher, and source of inspiration. Looking forward to whittling a few of these guys this week.
Great video. I don’t know how many times I have watched this and I’m on my 3rd little guy. Thank you for inspiring me and getting me into carving, it has helped me in so many ways.
Doug, I mean this in the BEST possible way - you're like the Bob Ross of wood carving. I love watching your videos. I've learned a lot and enjoy the things you make (and the commentary while you make them). Keep up the great work.
I came here to say exactly that! Bob Ross opened up painting for millions of nervous beginners and Doug does exactly the same for whittlers / carvers. The man is captivating and his enthusiasm is infectious.
I just finished my first carving ever. Thank you so much for giving such detailed advice, step by step. I'm already addicted and want to carve more. Next project will be the little bear of yours. Greetings from Bulgaria 🇧🇬
I love this style of gnome so much- I'd used your previous hillbilly tutorial before, but it's great to have a simplified version for more efficient gnome production and distribution
Doug got to say your a true inspiration and I have just started my carving journey due to watching you carve and whittle. The thing is, you make it look so easy, but the reality is you are talented at this, I do like the 1*1 series. So thank you, and keep the little guys n girls coming please 😊
Have to say, as a beginner I love this tutorial! Started whittling in the school where I work two months ago, we made butter knives, then I made an owl from your tutorial. I tried these little guys next, I've made 12 of them now and adapted the design to make some female versions too! Thanks so much for the awesome tutorials!!!!!
This was great. I'm gonna save this video so I can try to follow your instructions step by step. Thanks Doug , the little hillbillies just make me smile. Be well.
I'm onboard, thanks for getting me out of trying to be perfect and going back to be able to sit down with my grandson and show him how much fun carving can be. Who cares, it will be just us in the backyard.😁
These are great little guys. Even as an experienced carver the little projects provide a breather from the more complex projects. They are great to carry in my pocket to do some carving while sitting in a deer stand during the fall.
I've been whittling for about 3 years & I enjoy your videos .Have done some of them owl, bear, scarecrow, santa, little man, larger hillbilly not great but their not just blocks of wood now. But I was complicating it wanting to do too much & the enjoyment started to fade. At 74 I don't need complications. I sat on my porch & did 1 of the hillbilly gnome. I enjoyed it. I'm glad I stumbled upon your series intro video & it was just what I needed to hear. Thanks alot.
I just want to tell you that you have ignited a spark in me to start carving again. I recently inherited my father’s knives and supplies. I watched this video 3 times and carved a hillbilly/Gnome. Then today I went out after watching your painting videos and bought 25 colors, boiled linseed oil, Howard feed-and -feed wax. I see myself carving lots of characters in my shop. You have been so helpful to me as a beginner carver and I thank you for your detailed teaching.
Doug, these videos that even a beginner like me can follow are so great. But I find myself constantly stopping and backing up the videos so I can try to copy what you just did with one magical slice. Here’s a suggestion. When you are recommending safety gloves, recommend gloves with touchscreen fingertips so we don’t have to pull our gloves off so often. 😃
You're such a good teacher, Doug. I kind of went into a zen-like transe watching you carve and listening to your voice. Good thing I was't carving along with you! Might have lost a finger, becoming so chill.😮
Hello Doug. I just discovered your channel by accident. It’s really good, so I subscribed. I’m looking forward to looking at more of your videos. Thanks for a wonderful tutorial. Graeme from Australia.
Quite rightly, these videos are going to attract a lot of newbies, even children. So, to everyone watching this, please wear a carving glove as Doug says. Doug makes this look so easy, but his knife control and awareness of where the blade is going takes many years of practice. I cut myself very badly doing one of Dougs Christmas trees (not Dougs fault btw), due to the wood breaking. It took me a good while to get the confidence back to carve and I wouldn’t want someone to hurt themselves and not carve ever again. As a compromise, cut the index finger out of a carving glove and wear that if you don’t want to wear a full glove. Doug, you da man!
it's taken almost 2 months to recover from last darn index finger cut (xacto blades work well against flesh). This 1 x 1 attempt I took Doug's advice not only wearing my gloves but also using a 1 x 1 x 7" block and will saw off the nearly finished piece in the end then clean up the feet but the 1 x 1 x 7 leaves GOOD SAFE hand room to avoid the darn blade slips.
Wow 6 years already.... I remember getting so excited about the hillbilly video and how easy you made it back then... I think everyone and their dog made a Doug Outside hillbilly... Its a classic video same as the original so you wanna carve a bear video... I see a new resurgence of hillbillies being carved... I'm looking forward to carving along to this one again
I carved along with you, but turned mine into a gnome. My wife loved it and wants me to make another. In the past month or so, something finally clicked in my brain and my carvings have gotten a lot better. Takes time and practice for sure! Thanks Doug!
Doug you don't know it but you and I have spent a lot of time together I just finally figured out how to do the little gnome. Not at fault from your teaching but because of my stupidity. Your projects and creativity makes this hobby very addictive hence all the time we have spent together. Glad to call you my friend
Thank you for all these videos! I started carving just a few weeks ago and I am definitely hooked. I'm going to get a silicone craft mat because I carve at my computer desk and get shavings all over the place. I love this hillbilly project and found that repeating it is improving my carving skills boat loads. I'm so glad I found your videos!
I'm in my 20's and I used to take an old knife to sticks to make stakes while I was bored, I decided to start actually trying to make stuff and your videos have been very helpful in teaching me how to get started and how rewarding carving can be.
These videos are great. A stick or block and a knife. Anyone can do it. It’s fun and easy. It keeps people coming back for more going back to the basics.
Incredible! You are a true innovator, a credit to your generation and to humanity in general. With you on our side, the alien invaders don't stand a chance!
Yesterday I paid a visit to my local woodcarving club and the guy sitting across from me is doing your Hobo guy as I was doing it too. We both recommended your channel to other carvers in the club!
Keep doing the 1x1 videos lots more forest critters to crave! I would like to see your take on a squirrel! ❤ your videos I learned so much from them all Thanks Doug !
My first ever carve. This video got me carving. Went a little far, broke some things, fixed some things, broke some more things and got to a point I didn’t have much left. But this little hillbilly put a smile on my face. Thanks Doug.
Been carving for a whole week now. I have 3 bears one of which is a 1×1. A wood spirit and now I an working on the 1x1 hillbilly. Really enjoy your instruction.
Another great video outside in the bush not a care or worry keep it up I’ll be here next time learning thanks for your efforts in making the vids I know it’s a lot of work
I started woodcarving with your "fantastically simple" video way back when so that I'd have something to do that is light and easy to carry along on camping excursions. Then I started adding more knives, band saws, gouges, and oh so much more! Your 1" series has inspired me to get back to a minimal kit that's more about FUN with a knife and a bit of wood and less about having all the latest and greatest toys. To help keep it minimal, I like to carve a little dude at a campsite and then leave him there as a treasure for some kid to find. That way I actually end up with even LESS stuff to carry! Thanks so much for what you do!
I am new to carving, I’m a retired Sheriff and have many hobbies but carving has become a passion, I sure have enjoyed your videos and learned a great deal from them!! Thanks for sharing and keep them coming !!!!
Perfect timing Doug, I needed a gnome carving for a friend and this is a perfect size. I learned a longtime ago that I could not do the cuts you carve. Your hands are just stronger than mine. I enjoy doing your carvings but I have to carve them my way and not yours. Please keep doing videos. They give us inspiration and encouragement to carve!
It doesn't have much to do with hand strength. You're using hardwood or your knife is too dull. But don't be discouraged! It's wonderfully satisfying to whittle clean, easy cuts with a properly sharpened knife. If you Google it, you'll get lots of results. OUTDOORS55 on RUclips has several good videos.
Doug, Your previous video about small carvings from 1'' Bass wood really re-inspired me to pick up my knives again. It is very difficult to get good Bass wood here in the UK. I imported some from the USA but was mainly 1 or 2 inch stock. Many thanks.
Mine doesn't look nearly as clean as yours, but good enough. Learned a lot from this project - Thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge. Very helpfully for beginners like myself.
Hey Doug.. great videos thank you so much for taking time away from your family to make these videos.... thank you so much from all of us wood carvers here in the Ozarks in Arkansas....
As an aspiring beginner whittler, I’m really looking forward to this series as the simple knife only projects appeal to me most. I’d love to see you follow through with some of these by continuing through the painting process and techniques with the next video in the series. While I have watched some of your other painting videos, I think doing a few variations on these little guys would be fun, and instructive as a part of the series as a whole. For example, I next plan to do your Cardinal from a dowel but have no idea how you did the paint on those…. Thanks for taking the time making all these great videos and sharing your joy of carving.
@@dougLinker Great! I look forward to it. Although I will admit that I've already started the "dowel" Cardinal by rounding out a 1x1 piece of basswood with my knife. I do hope you'll consider adding some painting videos in this series, using the pieces from the carving videos. Being new to all this, that would surely help the 58 yo late bloomer. Thanks again!
Great little carving again, I hope there is a wife in the offing, my little guy is getting very lonely. Thanks for in depth instructions it is a great help for us novices
I hope you understand how much this new approach is going to help people like myself start to carve, I love the idea of a knife and a peice of wood with time can become something you can give the grandchildren. Thank you from the UK.

I'm from Scotland and I've found lime is really hard to find. If that's the case for you, pine is also great and cheap at your local B&Q.
The exact reason this Gramma wants to learn as well. ✌🏻🤍

Love it Doug .. Love The Whittling Series ..Thank you so much for sharing with the carving community
So incredibly thrilled to finally see another simple carve for us beginners. Thanks again! ❤

Very aptly put with a thoughtful analogy.

Thank god for this series, I have so many 1x1 basswood sticks, now I can put them to use
Thank you for making the series
I used your teaching of how to carve the 1 by 1 carvings to make my little carvings much better than I was able to do before
This series is exactly what we need Doug!! So awesome. I definitely have to practice on making 1 cuts in areas like the pants as I always find myself trying to make things too perfect and end up recutting numerous times and winding up with way too deep of a hole and mess!
Try using a bigger piece of wood.
Doug, I’ve loved watching you push your craft over the last few years and I also enjoy watching these simple tutorials. It’s really great to have you as a resource, teacher, and source of inspiration.
Looking forward to whittling a few of these guys this week.

I love this style of gnome so much- I'd used your previous hillbilly tutorial before, but it's great to have a simplified version for more efficient gnome production and distribution
Thank you for this video. It is a fun little carve that can be done in a variety of ways. This is such a fun and satisfying hobby. Carve On!
I enjoy your joyful tone as much as your techniques! Thank you so much for sharing so clearly!
Best video I found for making a gnome, thank you! I so excited about following the 1x1 serie
Great video! Love the way you bring the pups along, hope Finn and Gwen are ok!
Doug, I really love this little guy and am looking forward to carving him. Thanks again for the new series.
You have a great imagination and eye for detail love watching you create😊
thank you from Northern Ireland
This is the coolest and cutest carving I have ever seen! And now I got a guide to try it myself! Thank you very much!
These are great little guys. Even as an experienced carver the little projects provide a breather from the more complex projects. They are great to carry in my pocket to do some carving while sitting in a deer stand during the fall.
First carving I've done in 25 yrs, and I'm not unhappy with it. Thank you!
Simple, fun whittle, or more realistic face on a branch, I always learn something from your videos. Thanks.
I've been whittling for about 3 years & I enjoy your videos .Have done some of them owl, bear, scarecrow, santa, little man, larger hillbilly not great but their not just blocks of wood now. Thank you for showing us the way✌🏼❗️
I love these little guys more than life itself, I'm getting a carving kit tomorrow and never turning back
You're such a good teacher, Doug.
Doug is a national treasure
Now, that is something that I'd like to try. I'd like to do a green woman and a green man for my gardens eventually. Thank you for the nice visit!
I absolutely love that your license plate is just LINKER

Thanks Doug! Another great tutorial. Always a smile watching your videos.
Your pup is getting huge! Great little carve, thanks Doug.
Hey doug ,good afternoon I'm having trouble getting the eyes right on the 1x1 series, could you do a video on carving the eyes sometime??
great tutorial. Since I discover you, you gave me the hope that one day I will get there. Thanks a lot. Love it
Thank you so much for this tutorial. This will be my first project! You are a wonderful teacher and have a very soothing voice.
Already made 2. I’m addicted
Been carving for a whole week now. I have 3 bears one of which is a 1×1. A wood spirit and now I an working on the 1x1 hillbilly. Really enjoy your instruction.
Another great video outside in the bush not a care or worry keep it up I’ll be here next time learning thanks for your efforts in making the vids I know it’s a lot of work
Thanks
Thank you Doug! Just completed my first little guy all the way through painting. So much fun! I enjoy all of your videos.
So pleased to find you your teachings are so clear and with my health not been the best I’m going to give it a go beautiful work
Perfect timing Doug, I needed a gnome carving for a friend and this is a perfect size.
Just finished my 3rd Doug Linker bear. I’m having a blast learning this great hobby and can’t thank Doug enough.
Thank you, Doug! This is going to be a great series!
Nice to see that you’ve been recognized by the magazine. I can say “ I knew you when”.
You're a talented guy, thank you for the video.
What a great idea. So fun. I carry carving tools where ever I go and wood. Thank you. Love it🙏
Hey Doug.. great videos thank you so much for taking time away from your family to make these videos.... thank you so much from all of us wood carvers here in the Ozarks in Arkansas....
Great instructions Doug! I just love your assortment of little guys! 😊
This became the first carving I ever did. Wish I could post a pic up. Thanks it was peaceful to carve.
I will be remaking the cardinal for the 1x1 series
@@dougLinker Great! I look forward to it. Although I will admit that I've already started the "dowel" Cardinal by rounding out a 1x1 piece of basswood with my knife. I do hope you'll consider adding some painting videos in this series, using the pieces from the carving videos. Being new to all this, that would surely help the 58 yo late bloomer. Thanks again!
Great little carving again, I hope there is a wife in the offing, my little guy is getting very lonely. Thanks for in depth instructions it is a great help for us novices
Cant wait to try this when i get some more wood. Detailed and helpful guidlines the whole way through!
Thank you so much Doug for this! Being new to carving, I really appreciate the explanations/instructions.
Much appreciation for your instruction and teaching methods. My granddaughter especially thanks you for providing her g’pa inspiration and direction!
