Thanks for telling' them about the contest, Doug! We're frantically working on a special contest submission page for everyone (to add to the traditional "send us an email" entry). Now that you've told them about it, we're gonna get THOUSANDS of entries!!!

Best idea ever. I must say I have never seen so many fun carving projects. I love this blade cover project. Dont forget, Vegetable tan leather is much kinder to steel than other types of leather tanning. I think I'm on one of these tomorrow. Thanks Doug. It's always a pleasure watching your videos.

I'm going to make a few of these for sure.
For anyone doing this cut on the bandsaw; make sure to use a clamp or a jig so you keep your fingers a safe distance away from the blade. Doug made a video of a super simple jig made out of a 2x4 with 45 degree angles cut into it. I still use mine all the time.

Hello Doug I recently started wood carving, about 2 weeks ago actually and so I am a real beginner. But anyway I was watching RUclips and came across a video of you carving and was inspired by you, not for just your carving but your kind and sharing personality. I feel like I am a little late in the game at 62 years old lol! And due to diabetes I struggle to see and have to wear 2 pairs of glasses carve but I am doing it because I continue to watch your videos. Oh and by the way I do wear gloves and tape up my fingers lol!

Really fun idea Doug. I recently retired from 47 years in foodservice. This has me thinking about doing a knife block like chefs use but making it a series of Chefs heads with the knives slotting into the top of the poofy chef hats ( known as a Toque for the purists). If I figure it out and retain all my digits I will send you a pick. Thanks as always you are a great inspiration and awesome mentor.

oh boy! Back in the ‘70’s I worked a Summer job at Meat Packers and Supply in downtown Los Angeles. The company sold high end knives to Chef’s and Butchers alike. I recall one knife that went for around $900 and they had difficulty keeping it in stock…They only sold German, Swiss and Japanese knives. I shudder to think what a high end Chef’s knife would run these days.

I've been making custom carving knife covers from "fancy" wood, but never thought about carving one. Rather than using leather to hold the blade in the cover, I install a small magnet. Like your design, think I'll incorporate your idea with mine and see what develops.

5 star video. In addition to woodcarving, one of my other hobbies is leather crafting. It is important to use only vegetable tanned leather as other types of tanning ie. chrome tanned leather will react with the steel in your blade over time and ruin it. Vegetable tanned leather is the same kind of leather used by knife sheath makers and gun holster makers. Also, leather thickness is referred to in ounces where 1oz. equals 1/64 inches. So 2mm is probably close to 2 oz. thickness. I hope this helps your viewers. Thanks for the great video. Now I have to go make some covers for my knives.

    • @rodneywalat8956
