This is my take on Tom Hindes 5 minute wizard. What i like about this carving is that once you get the gist of the cuts you can apply them in all kinds of ways using different mediums from sticks to pencils and still end up with a very satisfying outcome.I did not know what to name this video so although the title may seem alittle clickbaity I truly believe this is something that anyone can do and get almost immediate results that will only build confidence in all carvers alike -hope you like it and a big thanks for watchin
-if you are new to woodcarving I have several videos on getting started and tool/wood selection that may help you on your way - Развлечения

Doug Outside n
Very good
I am new to carving and building on small projects. So far so good.
Thank you for your work
Please can you make the pencil for my kid PLEASE
Doug Outside I just tried my first ever carving. Took a pine round maybe 2.5" diameters quartered it and gave it ago. Not as nice as yours but it is at least recognizable.
When you do a branch do you make an edge to work from or work from round. Us love to give that a go
Reached back to scout days and practiced with a bar of soap. So fun and easy!
"I found a stick" He says, while approaching a tree with a chainsaw! 😆 My kinda comedy, mate!
that was like stick poaching
Erik Perlot, made me laugh! Stick poaching 😂... so true.
Did you see he was looking around too before he cut it down? 😂
I said the exact same thing....lmao! 😆
That was worth a good belly laugh!
The "Bob Ross" of wood carving.
Colonel Slanders ... you are right about that! Doug’s voice is so pleasant and calming.
Doug is very good but I think that title belongs to Jim Redhawk. (Just my opinion, of course!)
Colonel Slanders I was thinking the same thing! So calming
Lol I concur
Colonel Slanders negative goats rider Bob Rosses closest friends are trees
I'm not sure if you realise. But my friend. You have a great voice for teaching. There is no condescending undertones. No smugness. You sound so humble jet wise. Im going to subscribe. I want to learn to do this. This is a great "gateway carve"
He reminds me of Bob Ross.
@@kailyreyes2448 Bob "Chainsaw" Ross?
His voice is so similar to Frank Zappa's he, could be a voice double
I thought the same. Very relaxing and great video to watch. His other videos are great too.
A rare enough talent on RUclips
I believe a whole new world just opened up. Stepping inside.
Same here haha
R I T E ? I’m buying tools in the morning!
Right, just ordered tools... hahahahaha
Don't mind me.
4:55 - Set the hat height
6:50 - The nose
7:40 - The eyes / around the nose
11:32 - The hat
14:20 - The beard shape
17:00 - The bottom/inner part of the beard
18:15 - Cleanup
20:14 - Optional hair
I love you so much right now Thank you
You are a savior
"found a stick" lol that made my day 😊
HAHAHAH. My thoughts exactly!
in my country (austria) you get arrested, lol
@@simpleking100 what do you Get arrested for in Austria?
cutting a tree, near the road
That made me laugh out loud!
Doug is the Bob Ross of carving. Admitting he’s not the best but all the while making some awesome carvings.
I will totally agree with that.
I second that statement
“Happy little tree” = proceed to cut off a full branch
He looks like Yoda or grand master to me.
This video is 20 minutes long, yet it took me like 3 hours to make my first little wizard :)
Thank you, it turned out amazing!
First you get good, then you get fast, then you get good and fast 😢
Couldn't wait to get started but didn't have the proper needed items so I started carving carrots with a kitchen knife & when I ran out, I started on potatoes.
WHat a clever man. SO creative. I'm a lady of 74 and ALWAYS wanted to learn how to whittle these little faces but don't have the proper tools either. Your carrots are a good beginning. I want to see the faces AGE as they get shriveled .... hahaha.....
Wow amazing!
not making any excuses, nice
This made me laugh.
I've been thinking of a way to get my 9 yr old into carving/whittling. He's not comfortable holding a knife at all. I thought about soap carving for him to get him started and comfortable. I do like the carrot and potato idea as well.
Imagine being camping and just grab a stick and whip up this little guy, for the kids you'd be a superhero! ❤
My favorite part of the video as well. Made me smile!
Yes, that's what he said
ive been seeing these little faces for years. my gramps left me his carving kit when he passed. I think it's about time I put them to use. You made it so simple to follow along. Love it.
This video has it all. Calming voice, wood scraping sounds, bird calls, beautiful carving, wonderful talent, and an adorable dog. I've had it saved for a long time, and I'm sad I only watched it now. I'll definitely be watching more!
Hi.. I just followed your step by step instructions and carved my first face with great results, I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to make these instructions available I very much appreciate it.
"Don't do it on your lap, don't do it on your throat... you know... don't be dumb" - Great advice for pretty much any situation :-)
Chris de Kok Have the scar on my thigh to prove it and the stitched pair of jeans🥴🥴
This has got to be one of the most straightforward tutorials I have found. No BS just a very easy to follow lesson. I have to stop here and get a bandaid. Thank you for your time!
I just decided to get into this hobby and I can see why having a super sharp knife means so much.
"Santa Claus,
Hillbilly,
Whatever he is,
This guy"
I laughed so hard at that part. 😂
Looked like Hillbilly Santa Clause :)
The four horsemen of the apocalypse
@@JashinsMagpie oh my god
I love this guy he is a pro, the way he plays with wood is like he is drinking a glass of water, so peaceful so full of life and handsome and a good voice too by the look of him he is thoughtful too 🙂
"Sticks are plentiful.." still laughing at the random act of chainsaw, well done ;)
I love that he didn’t have “music “ distracting the video… loved the natural bird and nature sounds to compliment really great carving
Thanks
I love that he says “I don’t know how long I was out here” it shows he loves to do what he does! Great job!
Comedy! Just driving down the road and find a stick. pull out the chain saw and cut it off the tree.. Doug, That is true comedy. Thank you!!! I havent laughed like that in forever.
Loved it looked like he was in town ha ha its a felony in Hawaii people were taking cuttings from the plants and trees in Hilo
Imagine explaining this to the cops.
"I needed to carve a wizard, sir."
🤣😂🤣🤦♂️☝️
Love watching your videos on these
I carved a 5 minute wizard!!! Thank you Doug Linker and Tom Hindes for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you so much for this video. You make it seem far more simple than I ever would've imagined and now I'm actually willing to give it a shot after this video!
I love the humour you add to your videos Doug. Thanks for taking the time to show us these skills. Whether from you or if you’re sharing someone else’s ideas it’s very much appreciated.
This is honestly so wholesome with the dog and the birds in the background and I love it so much
This is my second wood carving video I’ve watched, but something about this entire video really spoke to my soul. Looks like I’ll be taking up wood carving little wizards in any chunk of wood I can find.
Once again Doug, I'm new to this and truly appreciate you sharing your skills. Loved the branch on the side of the road, had to stop and replay for my wife and she laughed more than I did. :-)
I am goung to try this one and get me some awesome little christmas presents started. Thnks Doug
This stuff is just so cool can you Imagine sitting on the porch in a rocking Chair and carving away
The Wizard was always there, you've just set him free
Excellent Doug, thank you, your teaching style is like an extension of your personality and humour, a real pleasure, well done!
Thanks Doug, great little project indeed! I made my first attempt last night and my family approves! I love that tiny Wizard:)
I LOVE these videos. Its so much fun carving little characters. These videos have helped a lot !! Thank you !!
"And then I never go to bed and im always tired." Me too man! It takes alot of me to pull out of a project when im in the zone.
*Total Awesomeness*
Great teacher, Thanks
This is the video that got me hooked - both on starting carving again and on watching your stuff. Thanks, you are a great teacher...
I’m so excited to find this, thankyou for sharing
Thank you for showing me this. I'm just about started getting interested in wood carving and this is a great first project.
I barely started with wood carving. Did this nice figure today, as my third project. So nice and satisfying. Boosted my confidence and morale and I’m feeling very happy to keep going.
Thank you for your videos Doug!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video! As a complete beginner it was incredibly helpful for my daughter and I 😊
This is so wholesome and calming. Thanks for explaining the process :)
Doug your a great carver and it's good to see someone carving Tom's wizards again. Tom was my teacher and mentor in the carving world, we met at a senior activity center where ole boy's would get together to carve and chat over coffee . I would drive an hour from home to Delaware Ohio after a nightshift and carve with these guys, to have such knowledge to pick at was a wonder to have at my disposal as i don't thing there was anyone there under 60 yrs old that hadn't carved their whole life. As a young man this was great fun.
Keep up the great work Doug and you now have a new subscriber, cause my wife wants me to carve her some of your stuff for her collection.
The best basic carving video I've seen so far and really makes me want to try. It's refreshing to see videos shoot outdoors. The background sound of nature.
Viewed for the carving instruction and thoroughly enjoyed the entire tutorial; especially the comic relief @ 2:43 with the finding of a stick at the side of the road..... Can't get them any greener than that! Looking forward to more.....!
Absolutely brilliant I love this I really want to start this craft so glad I found your channel thank you
Just finished this carving with my own twist! My very first carving and it turned out really nice, thanks Doug 👍👏
As others have said already...you are inspiring and I really enjoy these carving videos...thanks...I enjoy your canoe / camping videos too but as you say, just taking some time to enjoy the moment has a lot of merit.
Thanks for the video Doug. I love your creativity and admire your skills
I think I’ve seen you camping with Joe. Always enjoyed watching y’alls trips. I am really enjoying these videos!
Thanks for the clear instructions and great videos.
This is one of the most soul satisfying things I’ve ever seen , thank you sir .
Actually heading out on a camping trip tomorrow, can't wait to have a go.
Excellent video and great skill.
That was great. Gonna give this a try. Thanks for the tutorial
Doug, thank you. I just carved this little guy and enjoyed the heck out of it. It's rough but man it was fun. Thanks again. I will be carving along with all of your videos. I first started watching your outdoor stuff and the Joe Robinette videos. I have worked wood forever and always wanted to carve but couldn't get it done. No I feel like I can learn. Thank you, thank you!!!
Doug, thanks so much for everything you put on here. carved first wood spirit tonight and for a guy with no artistic talent, it really turned out great thanks to you.
Cheers and stay safe.
Great video, you make it look so easy, watching was almost therapeutic in these troubled times 👍🏼😁
I love it. Never stop creating and making it easy for us novice carvers. 😇👍
So happy to have found you Doug - great videos, presentation, your teaching style, you live in the bush like I do, but the absolute best thing that you do is to bring out that old thing that isn't so common COMMON SENSE. Going to watch all your vids. Excellent stuff Doug.
The best teacher on RUclips, so relaxing and informative. Doug, you have inspired me so much - thank you.
Excellent I’m camping to night and will be having a go (I’ve packed the first aid kit) 👍😀🐾
Another beautiful topic on carving, Doug is one very interesting person with all sorts of interesting ideas
Doug, thanks for sharing! Your statement “a quick, fun, little project...” is spot on!
Love this! Followed carving along with this video and found it such a fun project. Thanks Doug!
Another great vid Doug! ATB.
Thank you so much for sharing your art. Loved it.
I just made my first one! Thank you so much for the tutorial. I really appreciate the help!
Hi Doug. I picked up a beginners carving kit last week, ran across this video and I'm hooked! This gave me something basic with step by step instructions, but also a cool figure in the end. While it is very rough, I'm proud of it as my first try. It gave me enough confidence to try a few other videos already, though I've come back to this one several times for practice. Looking forward to exploring your other videos and to a new passion. Thanks for sharing your work and time.
Wood carving AKA Whittling, is an activity that was never even remotely on my radar as an activity to take up. Till now. Thanks for the inspiration! You make it look easy, yet with good instruction and guidance in your videos to help get started.
I could watch this to sleep. So peaceful man, good job👍
A lot of people all around the world have taken to carving. Because of your way of teaching. Just a big thank you for making carving easier to understand and fun to do.
God, this is my third carving that I’ve done and every time that I make a new carving it just makes me fall more in love with this hobby, genuinely thankful for this channel and all the help it’s given me
Wow, love this. I just ordered me a carving knife. Going to replay and try. Thank you so much. Oh I subscribed.
The sound of carving and the birds singing in the trees was reaaaally relaxing, as well as your voice and attitude. Thanks, brother, you earned a new subscriber. :-)
Awesome, a really great watch, thank you for your clear and informative teaching/demonstration. You do make it look easier that it is but I guess practice makes perfect/speed. xx
Hi Doug thanks for the step by step guide, just finished my first wood carving couldn’t be more happy Best Regards Tim
Cool micro carvings Doug. I would imagine your as good as the tool you use to. I bear all this mind. Thanks for sharing. Cracking stuff. Mark
This is one of the first things I did as a carver and was not near as simple as you showed. Your explanation was miles ahead of the other and will be doing a few this week with a few personal changes which is where the real fun starts. Thanks Doug I really appreciate what you do.
This is great! Thank you so much! I think yours are the best carving videos around.
I used this video as a guide to make my first work, and it turned out great. Thank so much for all your videos!
Thousands of years later and people are still unknowingly carving Odin. :P
Hail
That was after his carving knife slipped when he tried carving and drinking a gallon of mead at the same time. @
I thought they looked more like woodland gnomes :D
It's litteraly a man with beard
Hail
Fantastic! I laughed so hard when you “found” that stick lol! This is was a marvelous watch!
Thank you Doug! My first whittling project and it has been very satisfying!
Just did this as my first carve. I love it! It was easy to follow along and it was fluid.
Awsome video, you just helped me find my new hobby, thanks for sharing.
This was my first successful carving. It's not perfect but I'm proud of it. Doug did a great job of providing instructions for a beginner. He has a great sense of humor. I look forward to trying some of his other patterns.
Doug your videos are helping me get into the hobby. I love them. Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge. And the whole "find stick on the side of the road..." Then pull out a saw thing killed me.
Thanks for this video. A year after seeing this, I have a love for carving I never thought I would. So thank you so much for it.
Wow that was relaxing to watch! Going to rewatch this in the morning and get a stick and knife to follow along. U got a great voice
Doug , started carving 2 weeks ago and already have 5 done . Thanks for getting me started on this new hobby . I love it . Thanks for the guides
Thanks for your videos! I carved for the first time today and with your help I can’t believe how well it turned out!

I love your instruction. It is so very clear to follow. I’ve managed to complete 11 small carvings in 2 weeks. Total beginner and having fun.
So awesome, as always! You are such a happy guy! Love ya and all you do! :) So creative.
Thanks Doug! Good starter project and I appreciate the guidance.
Thank you Doug, you gave me HOURS of peace and happiness while carving this little man.
Thankyou sir!! The most relaxing part of my day is watching your videos!! No crazy background music, your voice is calming, a bit of humor and your teaching technique is perfect! And, of course, at the end of your video i have a wonderful project completed. Your hard work and time is greatly appreciated!😊❤🇺🇸
Love all of your videos, enjoy your Canada day weekend.
Thank you for sharing, Doug. I learned a lot!
Doug, this was so nice to watch and your work is really nice.
