I like that you use a knife for so much of your carving. I grew up in Kenya, and remember watching traditional woodcarvers using just home-made knives (flattened and sharpened 6" nails) to carve their amazing tribal masks.
As you say, you can go a long way with a knife and a V tool. As a pro cabinet maker, I want to develop my carving skills so I can incorporate some carved details into my work - some grotesque faces on the stiles of formal cabinets is my ambition!
Love your clips and your work. Great stuff!

Hey I thought you weren't supposed to move wood to different regions :p
I recall Shawn saying that he used to carve ducks.. I think you guys should have a carving competition and let the subscribers choose a winner
To keep it fair you should meet in the middle, Doug carves a lot of characters and Shawn has experience with ducks.
You must carve a duck man

great to see this. Bass wood is expensive in the UK - for a 74 year old pensioner it is. Plus it mainly only comes in 1 or 2 inch square. My Staffordshire Bull Terrier insists on bring a trophy back from her walk and they pile up in the yard. Not a stick, more a small log. About 2 and a bit inches in diameter. I saw this post and chopped a few into 10 inches long. Free wood. Love your posts Doug. Keep at it. Ron UK.

I really enjoy your videos thank you very much sir! Ozark hillbilly out!!👍👍🤠🤠🎯🎯 sometimes Cedar is stringy even when it is dry! I'm working with old Cedar right now and you can get a tear in it and it just keeps going! Especially where the red and the white wood mix! But I digress you probably already know that! Very old cedar fence post are fun to carve in! And people buy it up! That information $2 will get you a cup of coffee! LOL

Really liked this because it has given me the permission to carve a wood spirit in a larger piece of wood. I started out my learning to carve with the wood spirit tutorial and discovered I was able to carve a small wood spirit on a small piece of dowel based upon your pencil-carving. From this emerged a small wood spirit crafted into a car key chain. My wife was my first customer and she loved it as did the rest of the family. (No, I don’t sell them). Friends and acquaintances just seem to like this carving and I have no real special skill other than following your directions. They work, if you practice enough.
As a side note, my reason for carving is from chemotherapy, which has left my hands numb and tingly. I wanted to improve my hand skills to write short notes clearly, again. It’s been about 8 months or so and my writing skills are better. So is my carving because I try to carve every day.
I think I have accomplished the owl and made my own version of it because of our kids, specifically one who is a lawyer. She loved it, wanted one and I came up with an RBG owl, after Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, with black glasses and all. She now wants at least 5 more to give as Christmas presents to her lawyer friends. I know it is not perfect, but she likes it and thinks it’s pretty good. Enough said.
So, thanks for all you do for inspiring us newbies to want to pick up a carving knife. For me, time is of the essence because am almost 84 and don’t want to miss a day improving my new hobby.
    Best,
    Chuck Leaf

You work with the wood as if it were butter. You make it look easy. That wood spirit guy looks like he has seen a grissley up close. You do great work, Doug. 😺💞

I love it! I’ve been trying to carve wood spirits for a while now. I’m nowhere near your level. Good work my friend!

I too, wonder about the mechanics of, and time spent, sharpening all of those awesome tools.

Beautiful job....I learned a lot about layout and rough removal as well as a HUGE amount re: finishing.
Really enjoyed it and my own can only get better thanks to your help.
Thanks and cheers from Canada North
