Chelnov, his sister Chelmi, their dog Chelby, their cat Chelvy, their hamster Cheldster, so it came as no surprise, when their dad was fired from a job of a chief of the creative unit.

This is by far the most undderatted Genesis game of al time. Ive been playing since I was 6 I am now 35. I never met anyone who has even played it without me forcing them to check it out. Definitely in my top 5 of all time on the console.

The music is AMAZING.
Compared to the original arcade, Genesis's version made a miracle. I'm impressed!

Rubem Pereira The arcade game used a FAR weaker soundchip to the Mega Drive. It's actually identical to it, but with only THREE sound channels.
@Benjamin Owuye Jagun The arcade used the YM2203, which had 3 sound channels.
It wouldn't be until Data East's System 32 (Home of Captain America and the Avengers and Robocop 2) where they would upgrade to the YM2151.

I have tears on my eyes right now, this is the first game I ever get on sega megadrive , I was 6 years old, now 32 . The music is just unbelievable, much much better than today's game

Wow, one of the best level design I have seen in a videogame, the controls are not very good but the story, music and atmosphere are simply amazing
Same. One of the few games where the console version looked much better than the arcade version.
Phelios and Insector X are other two games that the console version looks better than the arcade.
I remember renting this game from blockbuster because all the good games were taken but I was surprised by how damn good this was, love this game!
The graphics for this game are incredible! Many times, I thought I was watching an arcade game!
This is one of the rare cases where the home version on the Genesis/Megadrive is far superior to the arcade version.

Don't be ridiculous. That RARELY ever happens. The arcades are the kings and home consoles are just cheaper imitations with much greater limitations.
@@HowlingMoonCinemas Nope. Happened fairly commonly, and I was speaking to Jaz Rignall about it, who confirmed it was a conscious thing what SEGA did to cement the home market. Afterburner got gameplay tweaks, Gauntlet got an entire new Quest mode added, Mercs got an Original mode added, Golden Axe got extra levels, DJ Boy had a complete gameplay overhaul etc. etc.
One of the best Sega Mega Drive games of all time and one of my favourite Mega Drive games.
What a bizarre game. It's like a fever dream. A Russian tokusatsu superhero battling cyborgs and mutants through a pastiche of South America, Easter Island, and Eastern Europe. Looks like fun to play, though.
With the final battle taking place on the Statue of Liberty!

Next to Strider and Ghouls and Ghosts, this looks like the best Genesis arcade port I've ever seen.
+Wolfdragon92584 I would say this is a better port than those, since it's actually better than the Arcade. But honestly the arcade wasn't all that powerful.
Same thing can be said about Slap Fight.
Same thing to Space Harrier

i played this as a child when i didn't understand a word in english. rewatching this and understanding what this game was about really makes me think "wtf? who wrote that story?"
THIS is the game that I remember but couldn't think of the name of. All I remembered was you could shoot things, one of the bosses was a giant suit of armor, and the final boss was fought at the statue of liberty.
I recognized it right from when the game's title screen came up. You could do backflips and just like in Biohazard Battle - collect powerups for your weapon.
I had to watch the entire playthrough just to relive everything. Man these classic games looked hard. Hm... that "giant" suit of armor boss looks smaller than I remember. I only remember fighting the foot of the guy and it taking up half the screen - that's how big it was. I guess the boss was just such a scary bastard that that's how I remembered it. False memory I suppose.
Televisions were smaller back then too 😜
I had the same problem, the only thing I remembered was the intro, breaking out of a glass case and that the screen was always moving.
Did you play the Arcade version? It's more difficult than Genesis's.
For those who say the Genesis sound chip is inferior, I present counter-exhibit B...

Well Sonic 3D Blast says hello. In my opinión, best 16bit soundtrack of all times.
This longplay didn't include the scene after the credits where Chelnov wakes up on the beach and finds Chelmi all safe and sound.
The Background art is amazing.
Chelnov/Atomic Runner game music should have won Grammy's award...........
When i was a kid, the first boss really scared the shit out of me..... along with that music. And that weird ass statue Boss.
I always did keep thinking of this damn music. lol so many memories.
Now THIS game brings back some interesting childhood memories! I still remember how kick-ass the music was throughout (and the graphics were awesome for a 16-bit side-scrolling platform back then). I also remember how difficult it was to complete it...that was until my younger brother and his friend used a Game Genie on it to get to the end (lol!). Fun times, for sure...

Oh my god, the last area music, and the boss music is sooo phenomenal even today.
The theme of the first level was used for most levels in the original arcade version of Atomic Runner Chelnov. The arcade version of the track is more suited as a base for an orchestral arrangement. The Genesis/Mega Drive version is more suited as a base a band arrangement.
This was the first Sega Genesis game I ever got and I've loved it ever since. My favourite boss is the Demon Bird and Mad-Roid...

cool play by SCHLAUCHI! one of my all time MD/Genesis games, I'm glad Data East decided on the changes here from the arcade original...it made for a much better game. rather than tastelessly capitalize on the ever-tragic Chernobyl incident, they opted for a new, more comic-book-style story, polished the graphics greatly, and the music got the greatest improvement of the whole package. proof that when done by true experts, Genesis did...& so did Data East!
Whoever did the art for this was really inro pre-Colombian motifs.
And so am I (thanks to games like Sonic Adventure).

The guy playing never uses the turn around button, still great to watch.
Love this home port over the arcade version despite the story change. Levels are lusher, difficulty is still cranked high, and there's more music than the arcade version.

Hard to top that intro, that man running and shooting lazers like a madman looks badass.

And yes, this game is really good. It's a shoot 'em up, but you are running instead of flying so you need to do some platforming.

This game is pretty good though. The only kinda weird thing is pressing C to turn around, but you get used to it. I recommend downloading the rom and give it a try, if you don't like it you lose nothing, if you like it cool new to you game to play.

It's weird how they changed the premise form the arcade version, and added the did he or didn't he epilogue. I do appreciate that they kept the basic tragedy elements however.

This game is pretty awesome in concept, but I wish you could only move around the screen more freely. Still, I love shooters that take the formula in a different path.
Paur Might be because of technical limitations. I think it moves so that everything doesn't gather up in the same place.

You didn't even show the full ending, with the cast list and the scene at the beach in which Chelnov's sister DOES get rescued.

That... was odd... I mean, the story... what?
I mean, most games might have had that part of the intro where it went "He Fought The Bad Guys Long And Hard But Eventually Got Caught" bit as, well, the first part of the game, then at the end of a level have the player get caught and break free in the next level. It... served no purpose.
Also, the sister... What happened to her? It made it quite clear she was taken away, with no mention of a death or anything.

The arcade story makes even less sense from what I saw. One "windy" (not windy day) some kind of disaster in a nuclear plant gives a guy called Chelnov atomic powers.
Then it doesn't say anything about who he's fighting, he just breaks out of a glass tube and starts wrecking everything.
True, and that's a lot more than I can believe anyone "barely conscious" could say. The ending is just as embarrassing. After one boss theme for the rest of the game (and almost every other Data East game) the final boss suddenly has separate music for each phase (none of it even that impressive compared to the stage music). The actual end text is so triumphalist even most ancient Greeks would have laughed at it for that reason alone.
Sister? Look closer man that's the maid. That story is just some manufactured nonsense.

If this game were to get a modern 2.5D remake, it would be based off this version (Sega Genesis version). If Chelnov were playable in Super Smash Bros, his moveset would be based off of Fighter’s History: Mizoguchi Kiki Ippatsu, with Smash attacks using his three spike ball projectile, and he would use a tether for grabs and recovery.
