Some people may not agree with i'm about to say, but I honestly think a good game like this one needs so much to be re-worked, putting more background story, more levels, and keep this wonderful synthesized soundtrack. The rings mechanics are already perfect for itself.
I remember picking this game out from toys r us when I was a kid. The phoenix on the cover got my attention. The ring system explained on the back lead to purchasing. Beat as a kid not a long game but that music has stuck with me for over 20 years
yeah i completely forgot it's name and i've been looking everywhere yesterday on the internet to find it. Now i randomly came across it on an emulator website a day later
This game is pure Sega Genesis greatness!! There are so many great games like this that people dont know about. I love that I grew up with this game in my collection!
It's not cited but according to Wikipedia "Motoaki Takenouchi composed the music for Jewel Master. Some of the track names (as seen in the sound test), such as "The Gate of Delirium", "To Be Over" and "Close to the Edge", seem to pay homage to the British rock band "Yes", as those were the names of songs performed by the band. In addition, "Talk to the Wind" could very well be a reference to the song by King Crimson, "Vital Signs" could be a reference to Canadian rock band Rush, "Time to Kill" could be a reference to the 1970s British band U.K., "Fish Out of Water" could be a reference to the 1975 album "Fish Out of Water" by "Yes" Bassist Chris Squire and Firebird could be a reference to Igor Stravinsky's Firebird Suite." Good ear!
@@BGuyle That is awesome. I'm a huge Yes (Relayer is my favourite album) and prog fan, so thank you for bringing this up. It just makes so much sense now.
I work at a retro video game store and I always recommend this game when people are looking for new genesis games to try out. Such an underrated gem. Thanks for uploading this!!
this game was hella hard back in the day when i played it. I only ever got to the snow level which was level 4 or 5 here. But even making it passed level 1 was an achievement in itself
I do not want to ruin your memory, but the snow level is the third one. Today is the first time I make it this far, but could not pass the yeti. When I've watch this longplay? I've realized my mistake. The gameplay is a bit stiff and the overall game is barebone, but I'm having fun with it !
I actually got this as a free game from EGM after they published my genesis Bubsy stage passwords. Definitely a cool game. Looking at this video, I think the furthest I got was the dragon skeleton boss. Not sure why I never went back
there is so much creativity. I want to like this game so much. I can even forgive the visuals being so crunchy, But some of the enemy attacks that are memorization timing based trial and error, and some of those stretches of space that loop the same small enemy in the same fashion makes this a tough game to fav. It's a bit like Castlevania, but so is Alasia Dragoon. If you're looking for that SEGA kinda-like-Castlevania-but-isn't game experience, try Alasia Dragoon.
Alisia Dragoon is pretty damned fantastic. I was just playing it last night and I utterly suck at it, but the music, graphics and game mechanics are all top notch for sure!
Back in the days i played this along with Altered Beast and lateron with Alisia Dragoon , Jewel Master is for me the most nostalgic one 😄 thank u for the upload ☺️
It's 2023 atm right... I remember the second level and music from it since I was a 90's kid. One of my oldest brothers had this game and Sonic 2 at the same time. That music from the desert level stuck with me since the 90's.. crazy.
25:28 8 year old me managed to get here by myself, and I couldnt figure out for shit how to beat this one. This have been bothering me for 25 years. It's more annoying to see now how close I was to the end.
This was the first game I played on the Mega Drive, and my first upgrade from the 8-bit NES to 16-bit. We finished the game without using the sword, but a few days later, we figured out the combination to unlock it.
The Four Symbols are mythological creatures appearing among the Chinese constellations along the ecliptic, and viewed as the guardians of the four cardinal directions. These four creatures are also referred to by a variety of other names, including "Four Guardians", "Four Gods", and "Four Auspicious Beasts". They are the Azure Dragon of the East, the Vermilion Bird of the South, the White Tiger of the West, and the Black Tortoise (also called "Black Warrior") of the North. Each of the creatures is most closely associated with a cardinal direction and a color, but also additionally represents other aspects, including a season of the year, an emotion, virtue, and one of the Chinese "five elements" (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water).
first game i ever completed, i was like 6 maybe 8, I remember being soo happy that i finished it. havent completed it since, i always get nailed my jardine in skull form wizzing around. :(
score another 1 for Sensei SCHLAUCHI! if this game was a launch title back c.1989 I'd accept how it looks and how everything moves; but it was released in 91... games like Streets of Rage 1, Gaiares, even ThunderForce 2 which did come out on 89, were pushing the MD/Genesis no problem, so in my eyes there's no excuse for the feel of this game. on the plus side, music's really well orchestrated, I'll admit!
Picked this one up earlier this year, great platformer, but like Demon's Crest, you'll hit the pause button alot to bring up a menu, so you can switch rings out (instead of crests as in Demon's Crest). That does slow the game down a little, but if you know what rings do what, you can switch them out pretty quickly.
Just found this game about a month ago. Though i stuck to Nintendo , I'm wondering why this sega classic never got ported to either gamecube or beyond.
It took me quite a few tries to get past the first level . So I can only imagine how much trouble . I am going to be having when I get to . Jardine the demon king at the end of game .
I played this and went off it eventually I went back to it and found that the way to beat it is to know your enemies tactics that bloody flying dragon boss was the hardest and that was before I knew how to combine the rings to get the magic sword get that and it is a piece of piss

I actually 100% agree!
And it needs level transitions too!

The game is just fine i like it just the way it is
I was pleasantly surprised on many levels with this game. I'm sure a few tweaks wouldn't go amiss that said its a gem 💎 of earlier md games

Yup, this was the 3rd or 4th game I purchased for my Genesis in early 1992. The music and ring mechanics was deep stuff to me back then
the gameplay looks solid, the soundtrack is fantastic. A darn shame I missed this
The same guy did Shining Force II. ruclips.net/video/vT7ZtwOBmqM/видео.html
It's an awesome game. It's a shame it's not longer. It deserves a remake
"Such is the stuff of legend". That was epic.
This game's sound samples sound so clear compared to a lot of the Megadrive, it's really impressive!
LOVED this game. I still remembered the music after all these years.
Thanks to this game, I burned my power supply after many hours of gameplay. This game is amazing and fun to play.
A great game with great gameplay and great music
A classic.
You can hear a lot of Shining Force 2 in this game, which makes sense because it's the same composer.
really? I was thinking certain high pitched sounds sounded like SF
beautiful game , sega megadrive 4ever .
For 30 years I thought I dreamt up this game
the music in this sounds like it's from a Yes album from the 70s that was never released, in 16bit format
Sounds like Herbie Hancock too. From his Mr. Hands and Secrets album
it's incredible, it's a seriously under-rated ost
Oh my God, you're so right. I can't unhear it now.

That’s damn cool, man. I might have used those Bubsy passwords, so thanks for that!
Never ever got to beat this game, last boss would destroy me. I didn't even know you could make a blade. But man oh man does this take me right back
I think you had to have the blade to kill it, or at least it made it wayy easier to kill it
Very castlevania-esq. The character is a bit stiff though. Then again cant really complain seeing how old the game is. Its cool.
I wonder if this was the spiritual predecessor for Neo-Geo's Magician Lord...
My first video game purchase ever! SEEEEGGAAAAA
One of my fave MD Games, I discovered it by Sega Channel of all things.
Jewel master is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and STUNNING on the mega drive 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖

Alasia dragoon was a badass game though and the music was even better
The music! 👌👌👌

No it really doesn't, they are merely different.
Thank you for this I remember playing this game as a kid and showing my mom it. Brought back Great memories. I never got by the second level LOL
Essa MÚSICA.QUE NOSTALGIA!!!!!
My brother played this game so much back then!!! I was super young but I remembered pretty much all of it. Especially the opening and the first level
And Omgosh the fire attacks and the trimmers
Seems your brother wasn't good at this game.

Great 😎
I named one of my pet scorpions after the villain in this game. Good memories and an amazing soundtrack!
clunky graphics yes, but great music, great game play. simple, effective

@@Lycanthromancer1 He also made Landstalker, and Shining in the Darkness.
The Void i want to enjoy shining in the darkness so much, but it’s just such a slog. Shining force 1&2 and landstalker were so great tho

Would've been interesting to see how this game translated into a sequel or even into 3D. I found the ring mechanics great as a kid
This character might be the inspiration for Richter Belmont.
IVE TRIED A DOZEN TIMES BY NOW AND I STILL CANT GET PAST THAT FUCKING TIGER
Remind me of Castlevania Bloodlines, also the main character look like Richter Belmont.
DobieMeltfire and the last boss look like Dracula... and teleports just like he is...
Even the music sounds Castlevania as fuck.
release before castlevania dude
castlevania yes, but also reminds of actraiser (action sections of course)

this game seams like mystic defender with customized magic at the expense of game speed
Obviously game play is solid, but why no switching to fireball and/or wave in the first couple levels?
