Here we go with 100 more MD/G games, this time of the underrated/less known/hidden gem variety!
Calling these "hidden gems" may be a little misleading; in my experience, I've found that MG/D fans are a hardcore and passionate bunch and are very familiar with most of the library. If you are one of these MG/D fans, there's probably nothing here you haven't seen before.
If, however, you are new to the MD/G or only have a cursory knowledge of the platform's more popular titles, then you're in for a treat. There are some real gems here - certainly ones I had never heard of and some of them are truly amazing. True, most of them tend to be more of the arcade/action type (I don't think there are any JRPG-style games on this list), but sometimes that's all you need.
Please note that I explicitly omitted any titles that were on the recently released "MD/G Mini Console". So titles like Alisia Dragoon, Beyond Oasis and Kid Chameleon - which are widely regarded as hidden gems - are not here. I did that because many of you who are watching this video probably own the MD/G Mini, and don't need to see those titles again.
As a personal note - as someone who did not have a lot of MD/G experience before making this video - this was one of the more enjoyable videos I've assembled for this channel. I was simply blown away by some of these games. I hope you enjoy watching as much as I did making this!
And to celebrate this video, here is a steam key for a game! 2LCLE-8H9IK-BZTIJ - if you claim it, please comment below and let us know what it was!

NOTE: The song used in the title sequence is an old Spanish song called "El Rey Y Yo" - but then sampled by The Beastie Boys for their song "Hello Nasty". Read the description for a link to the sample.
Sounds super dope
I knew that ish sounded familiar
It’s actually from the track ‘The Move’ off their *album* “Hello Nasty”. Drops at 2:55
any chance you could do a video where the games are exclusive to md/sms
Gaiares, Phelios, Combat Cars, Decap Attack and Chakan were pretty successful here in Brazil, with lots of magazine, posters and TV advertisements. They were notoriously famous in game stores where we could rent cartridges for one week.
Yeah, and I remember playing a lot of Flicky as a kid. Not to mention Mystic Defender.
I remember polterguy being realy popular too from that haunting game that was so unique and creative that it could never go unnoticed anywhere in the world
El Viento and Valis 3 are my absolute favorites on this list.
Chakan: The Forever Man is a difficult game.
I KNOW SEQUEL NOWWWWW
They left room for SEQUEL spoilers ahed stop reading
Basically death said to chacken that amongst the stars theirs more evil
So a sequel is certainly possible but I think chacken killed all humans in order to stop evil he would have to kill evreything no people no evil but in the end he would become evil so no rest
lol that's an understatement. As a kid I got quite far into it but I never finished it. It's an interesting game, very dark and brooding and very, very difficult! I think that's why so many people dislike it.
From the creator of Ecco the dolphin, Ed Annunziata!
You should try Warlock!!! I just love the dark atmosphere and the creepy sounds and music!!! When i was a kid, i played so many times and finished the game after mouths! The game is one of my favorites of the Sega Genesis! Greetings from Brazil!
Centurion made me the total war fan I'm since day one. My Scipio`s defence was unbeatable, those marauders beggars fell like leaves
It’s criminal how under appreciated Chiki Chiki Boys is!... the games was developed by Capcom and had some of the best music on the Mega-Drive. Not to mention is addictive as heck!
I love that game it's expensive now lol
His only missing Gargoyles
You are so right! I played that one the most out of all cause it was simply so crisp
So many memories! #43 Greatest Heavyweights looked pretty damn good for '93
It is! It was probably the best realistic boxing game in the 16-bit era, improving upon the already really good Evander "Real Deal" Holyfield Boxing.
Oh man what wonderful list. Games like pulseman, Ranger X, elemental master... beautiful works. Thx for the memories.
Small detail about EX-Mutants the player characters talk trash on enemies after destroying them it gives the game personality and it's funny and can catch you off guard
"So long sucker!" -Buff man Mcgee
Gynoug is GREAT side scrolling shooter I never hear anyone hardly mention. It was also called Wings of Wor here in the States.
Dune the Battle for Arrakis is a classic PC RTS, and arguably the first game of the RTS genre (certainly the one that popularized it). earlier on the genesis was Herzog Zwei which was slightly different as you controlled a space ship while building your base to attack the equivalent on the other side (was made for an early type of modem-to-modem combat).
Glad to see that Battletech (a personal favorite) made your list.
Still have my Genesis, my Sega CD, and all my games in storage.
Might be time to bring them out soon...
Stay safe!
I wish I had had some of the games on this list instead of a few abysmal games I owned as a kid..
Ballz 3D, Bubzy II, Xenon II, Sonic 3D Blast, World Cup Italia 90 and Buster Douglas Boxing come to mind 🤮😣
Luckily I also had Sonic 2, Sonic & Knuckles, Streets of Rage 3, Shadow Dancer, Road Rash 2, Taz in Escape from Mars and Rainbow Island, so that definitely helped. But I sure played a lot of dreadful games as a kid 😅
Thanks mate! Many of them were part of my childhood but were long forgotten, it's good to see their names again so I can look up for them
Ahaa! Ranger X!! Something told me if i waited long enuf it would show up. That was the game back in the day but i forgot its name lol. thanks G!
My childhood was amazing , what a time to be alive , still got my og mega drive :)
OMG, I remember that I played Pulseman and Mega Turrican AGES ago. Great games, for sure.
I'm from Brazil and I had the Duke Nukem 3D cartridge hahaha. It was awesome.
Aí sim, um BR
Well, I have different opinion - it was really terrible.
The 2nd worst in all series.
1st was on Visual Gameboy.
What a catalogue of treasures! Thanks, Gary, for your generosity in making this video. I'm sure it was fun to compile.
I was in college during the Genesis/Mega Drive era, and didn't have videogames at college (ha! how times have changed!), so my retro collection starts with 5th gen Saturn/PS1/N64. I'm not sure how many of these games I'll pick up, even though I do have a working Genesis. I'm a little intimidated by the cart collectors scene... Plus if I start collecting for one system, I'll probably start collecting for all, and then we're talking thousands and thousands of $$$. And I still don't do emulation.
That said, I am a huge Sega-head, and I now have a list of 41 games I want for the Mega Drive/Genesis, that have never been available on collections or virtual consoles, and that I don't have a cart for. Your video here has helped me add the last 9 to this list: Chakan, Dahna (JP only), Granada, Marvel Land, McDonald's Treasure Land Adv, Misadventures of Flink, Saint Sword, Tinhead, Wolfchild. A lot of my want list is in your list of 100, but I'm also interested in: Thunder Force II, Forgotten Worlds, Target Earth/Assault Suit Leynos, Air Buster, Vapor Trail, Urban Strike, Battle Mania Daiginjo (JP only), Eliminate Down (JP only), Illusion of Gaia, RoboCop vs the Terminator, and Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel.
Keep up the great work, and I hope this channel continues to be a great source of enjoyment for you! We certainly love the videos.
Comments like this are a big part of what makes this channel enjoyable to me - so thank you for your kind words!
Good luck with your collection plans! You've selected some great games there, and hopefully, you won't go bankrupt trying to get them all!
Hello, can i recomend to you Arrow Flash, Top gear 2 and Alissya Dragoon? If you don't have it allready 😊
@@milesr4609 Thank you so much for the tips!! I really appreciate it, since all three of these games definitely jive with my tastes. Luckily, I'm able to play Alisia Dragoon on the Genesis/Mega Drive Mini, and have really been enjoying that. I found that Top Gear 2 is on my "want list" of SNES games with a little note that says "or Genesis", so I'll keep on the lookout. I watched some Arrow Flash gameplay and even though it appears that reviews were mixed it looks great to me... going on my list. Cheers!
@@sonicmania9993 you welcome man!, sorry for the late response. I forgot to mention Aero the acro-bat, it not have the best reviews but i allways think that the best reviewer is oneself, if you really enjoy a game, then doesn't matter what critics or ratings have to say ( yes, there are cases of afwul games out there), but that is my way of thinking.
Good luck and keep up with your collection!!!✌👍
And gary, congratulations for the video, it make feel like trying Blades of vengeance and Dahna: megami tanjou and make me remember the name of a game of my young days, Gaiares! 👍
I owned almost every game in this video, my childhood just all came flooding back
Mega Drive was one of the consoles I never had.... only played at friend's houses or my cousin's. Def quite a few titles here I wouldn't mind checking out. Thanks for the vid, Gary.
The Genesis/MegaDrive is a console most lamen would youh whatever to.
I knew there were jems for this console but have literally heard of none of these titles.
RetroArch could be getting some overtime from me if I have something to say about it.
Sure I've got Sonic the Hedgehog's series I'm mostly familiar with,
but even these titles need a first look from me.
Shut up, Jason - you're blind. You have nothing to see in the first place.
Sure about that?...
The Chaos Engine Was A pretty Underrated Game
Crusaders of Centy also known as Soleil is an amazing game :)
Used to play a lot of Decap Attack.
funfactt it was a reskinned game about a wizard and magic but western release had a horror makeover
Yes! It is a really fun game and the music is jammin'!
Gauntlet 4 has one of the most impressive 16 Bit soundtracks I've ever heard! They really pushed the sound chip of the Genesis to it's limits with that one. Can't recommend it enough!
Absolutely! I don't know how they did it on such a small cartridge, but it sounds like the used a LOT of samples to build the music tracks.
Another game with a great soundtrack (and also in this video) is Mega Turrican. Chris Huelsbeck composed that one and it sounds brilliant.
Uncharted Waters and Kings Bounty are two that should be included. (Uncharted Waters, Chrono Trigger and Sword of Vermillion had the three best soundtracks of the SNES,/Mega Drive era, although my friend said Ys on the PC Engine was amazing, too)
Fantastic video that shows some real hidden gems for the system.
#85 Target Earth! I randomly picked that game up at a Video Game Exchange store. Only saw the cartridge, no pictures or screenshots of the game. $3. It has since become one of my all time favorite Genesis games. Super tough to beat too. A must play for everybody.
A great accidental find! And worth quite a bit more than 3$ today. This is what we call a retro gaming happy ending story
This game have remake. Original name is "Assault Suit Leynos". You can check it on steam. And remake is great
Thumbs up for including Zero Tolerance. A great FPS, the likes of which a lot of people said couldn't be done on the Mega Drive. This list strikes me for two reasons. Firstly because I'm happy to already have a lot of the games on this list in my Sega collection, and secondly I'm reminded of the many more great titles out there that I need to add to it!
Not only a great FPS, but the best Mega Drive FPS of all time! I finished it at least twice, and maybe it's time to do it the third one. My dream is that some programmer catch the beta of Beyond Zero Tolerance and make a full game... oh, well.
@@cellfreeze9360 Actually there is even another FPS for Genesis, but incredibly bad, called Battle Frenzy or Bloodshot. EDIT: wow, I've just made a research and just found two more FPS tentatives for Mega: Cyber-cop (or Corporation) and The Lawnmower Man (some of the stages are in FP). Besides, a programmer has made a non-official version of Wolfestien 3D.
Thanks for making this. Added quite a few games to my library from it =)
I was quite surprised that you mentioned #53. Not too many ppl in know even heard of this game. Man that game took me quite awhile to rap. I made a classic gamers reference just to show how old I am. But really excellent list, played so many of these back in the day. Thanks for the memories Gary.
39. Generations Lost, I used to play this a lot as a kid and I couldn't remember the name so I can try to play it again today, you're my hero of the week!
Target Earth/Assault Suits Leynos is criminally underappreciated/underrated.. Thanks for including it! Another great game is Hellfire!
4:14 this was master piece it was such a good game this needed a sequel
Cyborg Justice aka the robot game is a good game. You can take off other ribits arms and other body parts
Awesome stuff Gary
Combat Cars looks like the modern indie game "Rush Rush Rally Racing" for the Dreamcast... I guess now we know where that game drew its inspiration! (also reminds me of Motor Roader for the Turbografx 16).
Mystic Defender looks like a sequel to Spellcaster. They should have called it Spellcaster II. That would have got my attention back in the day, cause Spellcaster is one of my favorite SMS games and I didn't know a sequel existed
It really is a sequel. The Japanese versions are called "Kujaku Oh" and "Kujaku Oh 2", based on the manga/anime of the same name. I really don't know why it wasn't released as Spellcaster 2 in the West.
Okay, more recently I've been informed that Kujaku Oh 2 isn't exactly a sequel to the SMS game, but was rather based on a particular OVA of the anime. Same franchise, still.
Gain Ground deserves more love..
YuYu Hakusho was one of the best games... so much fun
Nice video...lots of stuff I've never heard of or forgotten. Thank you!
Ahh, Sega and also NES sounds are so good for my ears^^ Well, there are few exceptionsXD
Great list! Keep it up)
Seems like once again I've missed tons of classics:D
What's XD?
@@mrg466 it's a text emoji basically, the X is the eyes and the D is the mouth
@@yeet3279 Finally, after asking several people, I got an answer,... thanks!
@@mrg466 np, did you google it cuz you probably would've got the answer faster that way
@@yeet3279 Nope, next time!
Awesome! I love these types of video with no-one talking through it and will full music and sfx. Thankyou!
I really would not know which of these to play.
Although I don't mind platform titles I do like switching things up every blue moon or so.
Monster World 4 absolutely belongs on this list, even though it never came out in the States. It has a fantastic fan translation though as well as an official Virtual Console release/translation that has been ripped so you can play both versions!
The great thing about the Genny library is its easy to make a second list of another 100 games.
Battletech, Bio-Hazard Battle, Blades of Vengeance, Chakan: The Forever Man, Crue Ball, Cyborg Justice, Dick Tracy, Duke Nukem 3D, Elemental Master, Gaiares, and Ghostbusters (and many more on this video list to mention) - The coolest Gary. 😎 I thank my cousin Larry for introducing me to the Sega Genesis.
You definitely have an indepth knowledge of the Genesis/MD library. The only game I thought making the list was egregious was #26 Duke Nukem 3D. Demolition Man for Genesis is both underrated and good.
One of the best lists I have seen and that's saying something considering it was 100 games and not best games list.
Today that would be like if they released a PS3 or 360 version of Cyberpunk.
In Rings of Power, the voice that goes "Attack!" made me lol for some reason.
Also, bear casts claw...?
Gain Ground reminds me of many games like that from the arcades... Ikari Warriors and Time Soldiers among them. it's one I own now but haven't played much. I should give it another try...
Gain Ground, Death Duel, Gauntlet IV, Comic Spacehead, Ghostbusters and Technocop. ❤❤❤
What a great list!! What a work Man!!! To put so much content!! You cover almost everything! !! I'd like to mention an amazing strategy RPG called Vixen 357 !!!
Dragon's Fury is a game I own. it is a reworked version of "Devil Crash MD" on the japanese megadrive, which was a port of "Devil's Crush" on the turbografx 16. Dragon's Revenge looks like pretty much the same game.
Love seeing Haunting and Jewel Master show up
I freaking love High Seas Havoc!!
Nice work. I got like 50 of these and there's 2 more I'm thinking of getting(Arcus Odyssey and Marvel Land). Good choice adding Socket and High Seas Havoc as those are usually just seen as cheap Sonic Clones. The Genesis was my fave console and had some good stuff to it. I had an idea for a future vid if you think it might work: A vid of Anime/Manga based Genesis games. Maybe one of Western cartoons like Batman TAS or Animaniacs. Maybe one based on Movies?
High Seas Havoc just looks like another platformer. The physics are completely different. It looks more like Freedom Planet oddly enough than Sonic itself. Pretty nice one.
Socket has no excuse aside from the addition of a power meter.
Even the names are really close.
Oh wow Generations Lost!
I thought even for a list like this that game would be far too obscure for anyone to know about. That game was awesome if infuriating.
Jewel Master... I seem to remember playing a lot of that, but never remembering it until now!
i played more than 30 of these games back when i was a kid! Aaah! What a nostalgic times!
This is what the MD is all about! More spotlight to the lesser known titles!
Buck Rogers with Dune are the two best games on Mega Drive which I have ever played.
Seeing the other games on this playlist it really surprised me that Dyna Brothers (1 and 2) weren't on this list, I literally see no one talking about these 2 games, and they're really really good (despite being Japanese only, they're totally playable). You should def check them out
Onslaught is one of the best and most underrated games on the platform, you should check it out.
I've been losing my mind trying to find a game that got deleted with the rest of my wish list.
Hope it's on here!
Did ya find it?
no :(
Do you remember how the game was?
Unfortunately, it's been too long. It might have been that one top-down shooter where you're a cowboy, I don't know the name of that one
sunset riders?
Good video. Lots of great and underrated games in there, indeed :)
It made me very happy to see a Blades of Vengeance screenshot for this video. It’s the first game I think of when it comes to underrated Sega Genesis/Megadrive classics although I have a good list of favorites.
Super Nintendo might win in the top 25 but has a few too many bad games. Sega Genesis/Megadrive wins overall having a gigantic library of great games. It’s games were consistently good. Even a worst list of Sega games has ones I actually liked.
PC-Engine/Turbo Grafix 16 mostly consisted of hidden gems. I played a ton more 8-bit games but have really come to appreciate the 16-bit era especially after collecting games and minis.
Agreed. With SNES, their fans are always talking about the same 5 or 6 titles (Super Mario World, Super Mario RPG, Super Metroid, Link to the Past, Final Fantasy 6, and Donkey Kong)... and then you have critical favorites like Star Fox (but oddly I do not hear many people raving about). Aside from those, people talk A LOT less about other SNES games. In contrast, there are no 5 or 6 dominant games with the Genesis, but many dozens of excellent games that fans love that are always being discussed.
And in my view, the best Genesis games are better than the best SNES ones.
Man, I even grew up with the Genesis and I didn't know about like half of these games! I'll have to check some of these out! Some of them definitely look right up my alley!
Thank you for expanding my Genesis horizons! 😄
hi Gary, the song is not from spain, but from a chilean Band called "los Angeles Negros". greetings
I really liked Atomic Runner because of its graphics and gameplay. But i never made it through the last level, which was insane.
Thank you for this video! I was able to find an old title that I had long forgotten; Ex-Mutants at 6:00. My father bought that game for me as a kid, and I was probably 5 or 6 when I played it last. I never quite remembered what is was named since we'd only ever referred to it erroneously as the "X-Men game".
Golf with a castle? That sure is zany!
I remember playing Death Duel... the later "Terminator 2" (arcade game, later ported to the Genesis as T2 the arcade game) lightgun game could be its spiritual sequel, although Space Gun is also similar
Most of these look great! Gonna check some out later, thanks!
#45 Gynoug? You mean Wings of Wor lol. I knew that game was going to be on this list
This was an enjoyable trip down memory lane. But there are quite a few on here, that are far from 'hidden' or underrated. 'Gaiares' and 'Gleylancer' for example. Any self respecting side scrolling shoot-em-up fan with a mega drive knows about these, the console shined in this genre and they are some of the most sought after titles now. James Pond 3 was a massive hit. I got bought this on release, and it was never underrated either, high scoring reviews all round, the best of the series.
Granted, their are a few maybe considered underrated on here , but I'd put that down to personal preference. The more I watched this video, the more I see it filled with absolute 'classics', sometimes I thought maybe you've only played Sonic & Streets of Rage, to deem this list worthy of it's title description.
Crusade of Centy was released as Soleil in Europe and is a really superb RPG that never got the love it deserved.
holy crap man... The memories of playing over half of those !
Thank you so much. This gave me such a huge smile and almost a tear of joy like I was a kid again
Nice video, thanks Gary.
#59 almost forgot about that game, my brother and I use to play that
Whoaaaa. Westwood actually made a Red Alert type of game on Sega?! Mannn
Dune:- Battle For Arrakis was INCREDIBLE. And it predates even the very first C&C.
I definitely remember a few games in here, because Sega Genesis isn't just only Sonic and others, some games truly deserve more love.
Here's the games that i've played, and some i've heard of, in the order of appearance: Championship Pro-Am, Dahna Megami Tanjou (aka "Hercules" in bootleg, despite having no connection), Decap Attack (thanks to the Sega Mega Drive collection for PSP), Desert Demolition, Duke Nukem 3D (heard of), Dune: The Battle for Arrakis, Flicky (SMD Collection for PSP, again), Gain Ground (PSP, once again), The Legend of Galahad (aka Leander, heard about it thanks to Jon Burton's channel Coding Secrets), McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure (heard about it via JonTron), Puggsy (heard about it via Coding Secrets), Rainbow Islands (heard of, i only played Bubble Bobble and Puzzle Bobbles), Red Zone (Heard of, the soundtrack is kick-ass, because it's one and only Jesper Kyd who made the tracks, yes, the composer of Pre-Absolution Hitman games. Also seen it via Coding Secrets again, really technologically impressive for its time), Scooby Doo Mystery (i believe this is one of the first point-and-click games i've ever played), Second Samurai (Really awesome soundtrack), Sword of Vermillion (PSP, didn't play much though as i was really confused on where to go), Zero Tolerance (heard of)
I give my special shout out to Dune: The Battle of Arrakis, because it also introduced me to the Command and Conquer games. RIP Westwood Studios, Never Forget. Quite a shame that Electronic Arts is now such a greedlord these days.
Blades of vengeance was the game that taught me how to play with one hand now I'm known as the legendary one handed gamer lol
10:05 had to be the one that surprised me the most, just the fact there was a "Raising Hell Software' back in 1991
Thank you! After a decade I finally found the game I was searching for!
Number 95 "Wardner" at 18:52. I used to spend 20c in the local arcade in the early 90's and play this though in about 35 mins. Haha great times.
I was huge fan of Skitchin and spent many fun-filled hours on this game.
Good collection. However, I personally would have included "Alisia Dragoon," "Judge Dredd," and "Wonder Boy In Monster World."
Isn´t Battle Mania called Trouble Shooter?
Depends on the region
@@jfvfhdbhc4046 Exclusive for Japan? Well, I have, it sold here in Mexico with american packaging.
Flicky was of course a classic sega game... combining elements from Mappy and Mario Bros but charming in its own right...
Very good, there is a nice selection of hidden gems! =)
Chakan is hell to play imo :)
DEATH DUEL! I've been trying to remember the name of that game we rented years ago! thank you.
good job, I love your videos ♥️
I still play Blades of Vengeance to this day.
Surprised Starflight isn't in here
Battlemania? That's The Troubleshooters.
I had a genesis back in the day & still do, and many of these I
never got to try... arcusodyssey at least in the short clip reminds me
of Gate of Doom / Dark Seal from the arcades, and Battle Mania is a
straight up gender swapped edition of Forgotten Worlds where I hear you
control both characters at once, and Blades of Vengeance looks like a female Rastan. Bubba & Stix could be the cousin of Boogerman (similar artstyle)
very nice!, i've played some of those games before but forgot their names haha
now i know them again, thanks pal :D
Thanks for the upload!
Thanks for the video gonna put some of those on my everdrive sega genesis, this fit a lot in quarentine
This was cool to view! Thanks!
