Hey everyone. I've created a video explaining the "trick up my sleeve" for getting the air switching valves out. Link is here ruclips.net/video/SEz9tr_2FsM/видео.html
Great video!! all I did to save headache was just replacing the valves and leave the old base on, it's just an aluminum piece nothing special can leave it on and get a T25 pull out the old sensors replace with new ones!
Hope you still active, but I got this code for my truck and I'm not sure if it's this exact thing that's wrong with my truck, but weird thing Is my truck still runs normal
Update 10-2022: The last fix only lasted a few months and I was resetting the system using a code reader every day for 18 months. I finally installed the Hewitt Technology bypass kit and was able to remove a lot of the original Toyota system junk. What a waste of time and $ this has been. Go with the Hewitt Technology kit first. Update 06-2020 More codes, so I replaced the bypass valve unit - big job it required removing the intake manifold. Update 04-2020 - My Tundra went into limp mode last week, after delaying the job of replacing parts. Yesterday I started by replacing just the 2 air pumps and the trumpet. I ran the code search again and all is good for now. I'll wait on replacing the valve unit until needed. Fyi, I replaced the pumps by working mostly within the wheel well, except for the 2 wiring connectors under the hood. Fairly easy job - but you should have an assortment of push connectors to get everything buttoned up again. An autopsy and disassembled the air pumps and found water in only 1 pump. I installed the updated trumpet to avoid flooding them in the future. Nice informative video - Thanks! 2007 Tundra 5.7 original code was P2445 - engine light on. Scan reading "secondary air injection system pump stuck off".
The trick is you undue the nuts on both side of the tubes going down to the exuast. Then come back up and undo the two bolts on the driver side. Then slightly lift up the driver side tube. Once you do that, you will be able to wiggle out the valves itself after you've undo the top three bolts. Hope that helps. Took me four hours to replace all the components mentioned here. Good luck.....
I had this check engine light come on in July (2007 Tundra with 120,000 miles). I took it to Foothills Toyota in Burlington, WA and they replaced the pumps (not sure about the valves) at no charge. They emphasized that the check engine light (P2442/P2443) MUST be showing when they check it or Toyota will not authorize free repair (so don't clear the light if you check it yourself!)
Hi great informative video. And thanks for showing us the updated trumpet with the covers. Would you or anyone happen to know the part number for the UPDATED trumpet with the built in covers? I have a 5.7 motor with no issues currently and would like to install this just to avoid headaches in the future. You also mentioned part of the exhaust has to be removed? Which part all i saw was the manifold. Thanks so much.
I just got this repair done at the dealership and now it sounds like a have an exhaust leak or something. Any chance they forgot to tighten something? I've heard of cracked manifolds being common on Tundras but I never heard this exhaust leak until I picked my truck up. Thought? 2008 5.7L
The trick is to take the 4 t25 torx head bolts out of the valves and just replaced the valve it self just make sure the valve plate is facing the correct way when installing them.... that’s how I did it and no problems since.
Can you or someone show me a picture of the correct way the valve plate is to face? I have seen a few different photos. The valve on my part points in a different direction than my old part. Now I have it all mixed up.
Can I just replace the secondary valve or do I have to replace everything you did. I don’t feel comfortable disassembling that much of the engine. My tundra has 250,000 miles and still runs great.
Does any other lights come on? My check engine light is not on but my abs light and 4x4 lights are blinking and so is anti traction light. any suggestions on what it is? Someone told me it had to do with my rear sensors but had them switched and lights are still on. help....
I have a 2013 4.6l and it happened to be but they didn't mention anything about the trumpet lines or valves at the manifold. If they only did the pumps at the fender well would you say they should've done the valves too? Wondering because my truck still feels more sluggish than in the past after having this fixed. Was great right after, but recently has not had the acceleration in used to.
Wow!!! A couple weeks ago the Check Engine, VSC, and Traction Control lights all came on like a Xmas tree! I have searched high and low to figure this out. Some said it's just the fuel cap. So I checked it, looked good but I replaced it anyway. No joy. Still lit up. So I took it and had the codes read. Came back as: Secondary Air Injection Switching Valve stuck open, Bank One. I didn't get what it was as far as P2441 or 2442. I have a 2008 Tundra ( 5.7 liter) with 93 K on it. Is it under warranty and do I have to replace all this stuff? Guess the big thing is warranty. It would be super nice if that was the case!!
Sir. I need your help please. I have a 2008 5.7 Toyota Tundra just like the one in your video here. At the 1 minute 50 second Mark of your video you place those valves down (as you're talking), and you place them down on top of a hose. The hose has like some sort of heat protectant around it and it swings across the top and connects on the manifold and then it goes the other direction towards the airbox. CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME THE EXACT NAME OF THAT HOSE? And no it doesn't connect to the PCV valve. When that hose connects into the top of the manifold it is held on buy a little clamp that you squeeze with your fingers. I'm hoping you can give me the exact name of that hose because I would like to order it aftermarket and I need the name. I know it's some sort of vacuum hose. Thx
Jim, 11 months later and I have to clean the diverter valves again. For some reason the diverter valves are half the price so I ordered new ones. Quick question what is the part number for the trumpets, I need one of those!
Hey Jim. Whats the trick to getting the harness off the back of the manifold? I'm trying to replace the heat exchanger because its leaking coolant into the valley under the manifold. But those dang clips!!!
This happened to me on my 09 tundra 5.7 doublcab on friday ....and honestly call your dealership, i was watching this video about to go get the parts myself but i called the dealership. my truck has 199,517km and ive beat the piss out of it off roading with lots of mods. i dropped it off yesterday and got it back today(tuesday) and the invoice said $0.00. a beautiful thing! edit: oh yea, my truck is my picture! double edit: my local dealership had their system down so they couldnt check my vin, so i went to the town over. any dealership will do it.
That's awesome, how many miles on your tundra now and any other problems? I just bought a 07 because I was reading how reliable they are but now just learning about these are pumps. I don't have any problems yet just wondering.
Great video. I have P2432 and P2445. Would you recommend doing the ones underneath the manifold too? Code P2432 still there and has Dash lit up again and now power!
Yeah I replaced the secondary air injection pump that's at the bottom of the left fender and it works like a charm the old injection pump fan wasn't spinning properly anymore
Hey guys, I just had my truck going in "limping" mode yesterday... Truck:2008 Tundra SR5 DC TRD 4x4 5.7L Symptoms: Check Engine light on, Traction Control light on, VSC OFF light on and flashing and 4LO light on and flashing ...is this Air Pump the cause of my problem? Thanks Carlos
My 2007 did not go into limp mode for a P2445 code - it drove fine with the code active. You best get you truck scanned at a shop or parts store, or buy a simple scan tool like BlueDriver. The last vehicle I owned that went into limp mode had transmission issues. Good luck!
I had the pumps replaced under warranty on my 4.7L 2007 tundra in 2014. I had 143K miles when this occurred. I'm getting the same codes 3 years later. Any suggestions?
In my car I get code P2442 first, then I replace valve and pump one only, then after one month check engine light comes on and set code P2443 . You have any idea what is the cause of it?
My truck wont move, I disconnected the battery for 30 minutes but the eng. lite is still on. there is no power. I googled the 2440 code says air diverter which is what I clean the last time, that worked for a week . Here I am on square 1. Looking on Ebay to replace that part, hope to get that in tree days. I inspected the diverter that the rubber seal that is visible underneath is fried. Is this A free repair on a 2011 Tundra? I have less than 80k miles.
+mikoloe the rubber seal failing is not part of the extended warranty. And also a seized diverter valve should not inhibit the truck from moving. It sounds like you have a much larger issue at hand
Jim, check this out.....I have the small v8, it has 2 diverter valves one on each side for each bank. I opened them up and soaked them in Gas for about an hour. I cleaned them with a tooth brush and put them back in and everything is good. At 80k miles the dealership wanted $2300. I asked how much for just the part and they said $2000.... GO figure.
Can you or someone show me a picture of the correct way the valve plate is to face? I have seen a few different photos. The valve on my part points in a different direction than my old part. Now I have it all mixed up. Does it face a different direction depending on left or right valve?
Does anyone know how I can fix a small hole that’s on one of the two plastic hoses that run from pump to each check valve? Silicone tape? Their hard plastic not the rubber part
"I have some tricks for getting these out - but that's UP MY SLEEVE"??? And you're not going to tell anyone how to do it more easily??? Thanks a lot pal.
Those valves are not "very expensive". A net set of pumps costs roughly $140. What's expensive is the labor that the dealer charges. If you can turn a wrench, you can replace the pumps for under $200 and you won't need the bypass methods that cost three or four times more.
I can give you this advice. The extended warranty for this repair is 10 years or 150000 miles.. my 2008 5.7 how to check engine light come on 2 1/2 to 3 weeks ago at 127000 Miles. I was over the 10 years by 7 months.. water and condensation has got into your air injection pump through no fault of your own since it was a faulty design. However it was not recalled so this repair is not free. I'll tell you what Toyota is doing. If you are a Toyota loyalty customer which usually means you have to have done all your repairs at a Toyota dealership and what helps more is if you bought more than one truck which I have bought three- you can call Toyota Motor Corporation and they will speak with you about your problem. This is a very expensive repair. You cannot get your car inspected because this is an emission repair. My repair here in El Paso is $2,489. I reached out to Toyota Motor Corporation and they are aware of the problems, even though I was 7 months over the 10 years since I was a loyalty customer they return my call today and decided to cover 80% of the cost. So I'm out $493 in my pocket. If Toyota Motor Corporation doesn't help you it's a very expensive repair. FYI, I was told by the dealer to drive the truck very slowly and not accelerate swiftly or depressed the accelerator all the way down because this will create more emission in the system and could damage the catalytic converters. That would add another two or three thousand to your bill. Drive the truck is extremely slow and do not accelerate quickly. Keep the RPMs low until you repair it. Good luck
I was able to use a ruthech bypass module on my 07 4.7L Tundra. My code was p2442 so I had to use the stainless steel plates that came with the module. Well worth the 179$.
I have a 2008 tundra v6 , 150000m on it, it recently started stalling when accelerating, it will only go up to 55mph. anyone knows what might be the problem?? thank you
The torx bolts may not come loose. You are correct, that is the usual method but you can also remove one of the pipes from the exhaust and it'll all slide right out.
This just happened to my 2013 tundra 4.6L. The dealer wants 3400 for the repair. I checked with toyota about the warranty and it apparently does not apply with my vehicle. Would you or anyone else have an idea on how to get this covered? Only have 113,000 miles on it.
Toyota now saids to take it in at no cost for a softwsre up date due to that problem look it up youll see it..(google) it will ask for vin# n then it will tell you that..
07 tundra 5.7 liter. Truck has just 45k miles on her. Had this done by dealer under warranty. When I hit the freeway from the dealership I noticed it makes a dieseling sound like the exhaust manifold is leaking. Keeps making that noise, sounds like a leak. Before I take it back (at my expense apparently) I want to check it out myself during the holidays. Does this require removal of the exhaust manifolds or just the intake. Or could there be a leak from the exhaust manifold? Isn't there a valve that feeds into the exhaust ahead of the cat or is there a tube from the check valve down to the exhaust? Thanks
+Vince McK the emission valve set assembly that I show in the video is attached to the exhaust manifolds before the car via small pipes. It is quite possible they did not install the pipes or gaskets correctly.
My 2008 5.7 just had the AIP warranty work done and now I have by the sounds of it the same problem as you as it sounds like an exhaust leak after picking it up...What outcome became of yours?
Updated comment for anyone needing the "Trumpet" part. "It's Secondary Air Injection Pump Hose - Toyota (17621-0S012)" This is the new style with the added baffle on the end.
PlainOldJim what do I need to do to get those bolts off the valve system? I can at least offer a like and subscribe. I don’t want to fork over an arm and leg like you said.
If you get a check engine light come on, take it in right away .I waited n i screwed myself.bought my 07 Tundra.April 07..light came on April.this yr.2017.i waited,it went into limp mode in July.took it in to my Toyota dealer.they wouldn't honor the extended warranty.cause it had expired in April.i ended up dishing out $1800.there went my summer vacation.you get a check engine light, take it in.push it,tow it..take it in, right away.
I have a 07 Tundra 98000k and the code secondary air system, called the dealer said the 10 yr warranty is up and it will cost app 3000.00 to get it fixed, had 5 toyotas but no more, what a rip off!!!!!!
Hey everyone. I've created a video explaining the "trick up my sleeve" for getting the air switching valves out. Link is here ruclips.net/video/SEz9tr_2FsM/видео.html

From the dealer. The part number is in the "TSB" paperwork.

Yeah I replaced the secondary air injection pump that's at the bottom of the left fender and it works like a charm the old injection pump fan wasn't spinning properly anymore

My 2007 did not go into limp mode for a P2445 code - it drove fine with the code active. You best get you truck scanned at a shop or parts store, or buy a simple scan tool like BlueDriver. The last vehicle I owned that went into limp mode had transmission issues. Good luck!

What other symptoms dod you have other than check engine light
In my car I get code P2442 first, then I replace valve and pump one only, then after one month check engine light comes on and set code P2443 . You have any idea what is the cause of it?
My truck wont move, I disconnected the battery for 30 minutes but the eng. lite is still on. there is no power. +mikoloe the rubber seal failing is not part of the extended warranty. And also a seized diverter valve should not inhibit the truck from moving. It sounds like you have a much larger issue at hand
Not the rubber seal in on the assembly but on the piston part ( inside the chamber). It idles back and forth between 500 and 1500 rpm consistantly.
+mikoloe if it's part of the big aluminum assembly I hold up in the video, it'll be covered.

+Titanicus Titan a few days, probably.

Those valves are not "very expensive". A net set of pumps costs roughly $140. What's expensive is the labor that the dealer charges. If you can turn a wrench, you can replace the pumps for under $200 and you won't need the bypass methods that cost three or four times more.
Are both air pumps the same??
I have the same question!
Yes, they are
How much just for the parts?
The parts are a small fortune.. I would say close to $1,500.. try toyotapartsbarn they have original Toyota parts. But you will need part numbers
Mine says p2447 secondary air injection system pump stuck off bank 2. Tundra 5.7 2007
Good luck
Same on mine does somebody know's if exist a recall for this problem?
When do i get that new pumps
Hi , is the same for the 4.7 l and 5.7 l ??
Or they’re different
Completely different, 4.7 is easy and you don't have to take the intake off

I have a 2440 code that just came on... any ideas?
+mikoloe most likely this issue. Bring it to the dealer for a free repair. Assuming you're under 150k miles.
@@PlainOldJim mine is an 07 with 79k and dealer said it would run me 2500...so no warranty for me
Great info Jim but comment on trick, would be nice to know or more detail on step by step to install would be nice
Scott Luton well i have a lexis gx460 2010 in middle east and i had to pay same price although i have half the mileage you have
Toyota now saids to take it in at no cost for a softwsre up date due to that problem look it up youll see it..(google) it will ask for vin# n then it will tell you that..
Scott Luton same here 2012 38,000mi toyota said im out of luck. No recall nothing think its time to trade it in denali hd sounds good
Is this a thing with newer Tundras only? I have a 2003 Tundra with 232,000 miles on it and have never had any sort of problem like this.
Im in the same boat as of today... on my 2013 tundra 4.6L
Took mine in today- emission warranty is good up to 150k miles. Toyota has an issue with these codes, hence "warranty extensions".
What year was your truck thanks?
2010
Seems to be totally different from the 4.6 version truck
Very helpful thanks
It is quite possible they did not install the pipes or gaskets correctly.
ok thanks!
Thank you my 07 just came on will have to check with dealer.
My 2008 5.7 just had the AIP warranty work done and now I have by the sounds of it the same problem as you as it sounds like an exhaust leak after picking it up...What outcome became of yours?
Just did mines easy fix but didn't have to change check values
Updated comment for anyone needing the "Trumpet" part. "It's Secondary Air Injection Pump Hose - Toyota (17621-0S012)" This is the new style with the added baffle on the end.
Seems like all tundra engines sizes are totally different under the hood
Bypassing kit is the way
By any chance you wouldn't happen to live in Houston Texas?!
+Francisco Garcia East Coast, sorry.
:'(
PlainOldJim what do I need to do to get those bolts off the valve system? I can at least offer a like and subscribe. I don’t want to fork over an arm and leg like you said.
Can't you just clean the old one?
I had and an injection air pump failure on my 06 Sequoia.. Recently
Good
Can I use the 5.7 motor Switching valves on a 4.6 motor?
“That’s for me to know” wow.
It’s $2,700 now (2023). There goes my vacation.
Your comment at the end, "For me to know", is a negative. So you're NOT willing to make things easier for the home mechanic !?!?
There is a follow up video with the answers you want.
Had a mobile mechanic change my valve cover gasket and he broke the tube... smh
Thanks
Not covered. Only 5 year 60k miles
Good video
Too cool to tell us how to get that bolt out? Lolz badazz
"Thats for me to know"... ok well dont uplaod the video than!

+Maic Salazar use a shorter length bolt ;)
for me to know, comment, Thanks
I'm a GMC Tech...gotta do this job tomorrow. How about a little professional courtesy and float me a trick.
I have a 07 Tundra 98000k and the code secondary air system, called the dealer said the 10 yr warranty is up and it will cost app 3000.00 to get it fixed, had 5 toyotas but no more, what a rip off!!!!!!
It does feel like a ripoff
I long for the old days when I would 5:47 just go to the junkyard to get parts to fix my 1950 Chevy. No computer chip emission complexity.
Thanks for the video but: "There are tricks to getting it out but that's for me to know?" Really!? What an a-hole!
What a mess!
Just came from Toyota dealer to check my 08 Toyota Sequoia and to change out my secondary air pump will be 2600 before taxes 😑
Plain old Jim plain old does not respond to questions that I can tell.
