  • Installation and discussion of the Hewitt Technology Inc.'s Gen 2 Secondary Air Injection System Bypass Kit. In this video we install the Gen 2 kit on a 20008 5.7L Tundra. Even though we are installing this on an 08 Tundra for the video the it is applicable to and the installation will be the same for all 2007 and newer 5.7L vehicles including the Sequoia, Landcruiser and LX570 up to the last year of the 5.7L, 2021.
    The Gen 2 Kits and others can be found on our Hewitt-Tech.com website here:
    hewitt-tech.com/product/secon...
    The Gen 2 kit is the most comprehensive solution for a failed secondary air injection system to date. It is the required solution for any of the Flex Fuel vehicles and all of the 2014 and newer Toyota/Lexus vehicle or earlier vehicles that will run the system on engine shutdown.
    The kit includes the Gen 2 Bypass Module, a pair of exhaust block off plates, a custom harness, a full color copy of instructions, our Expert Technical Support and a Limited Lifetime Warranty.
    This kit will take care of all the normal mechanical secondary air trouble codes like P2440, P2441, P2442, P2443, P2445, P2447 but also take care of electrical fault codes like P0418, P0419, P0412, P0415, P1613 and P1614 that our older Gen-I kits need kit addons to take care of.
    Unlike our previous V3 and V5 units, the Gen-II unit let's the ECM think the entire secondary air injection system is operating like it should and the emissions monitor will show as complete the next time the systems is commanded to operate. The Gen-II Kit takes the place of the factory air injection control drivers and communicates directly with the ECM. The only parts of the system that is required to remain are the pressure sensors in the air switching valves. If those have been damaged by exhaust or you want to remove the valves they can be replaced by adding Pressure Sensor Options to the kit. Those can be found here: hewitt-tech.com/product/kit-a...
    Currently the Gen-II kits are available for ALL 2.7L, 4.0L, 4.6L, 4.7L and 5.7L engines in the Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, 4runner, Landcruiser, LX470, GX470, GX460 and LX570. We also cover the Prado and Hilux vehicles for our friends in the down under and other markets.
    If you have any questions or would like to order, please give us a call Toll-Free 844-307-7671 or email support@hewitt-tech.com You can find all of our products and more information at hewitt-tech.com
    Disclaimer: It is illegal to remove, dismantle or otherwise cause to be inoperative any pollution control device required by federal, state, or local emissions law. Our bypass kits are sold for off-road, competition or other emissions exempt use only. No other applications are intended or implied. By installing or using this SAIS Bypass Kit the vehicle owner and installer acknowledge and assumes ALL risks associated with its use.
    * Update* The blank plug caps are now shipping with the units. Use the blank plug caps instead of just taping off the connectors. It is also recommended to remove both factory air injection control drivers so there are no open and unused connection points.

    I just installed this kit on my 2012 Toyota Tundra 4.6L. It did the trick!
    The switching valves are in the engine bay rather than under the wheels for my truck. Loosening the bolts on the switching valves for the block plates installation, especially the one near the air filter, were the toughest parts of the install for me. All in all it probably took me 3.5 hr - I’m mechanically inclined but more on the home improvement side of things.
    Very happy with the product, so far. I really hope it holds up over time. Thank you, Hewitt

    I bought a Gen II SAIS kit and a PSO for my 2007 Tundra from Hewitt Tech February of 2021 and just made time to do the install in Jan 2022. I'm not terribly mechanically savy but Paul's system and instructions made the installation a breeze. I installed the Gen-II on my 2011 Tundra 4.6L with relative ease and it only took two hours. Hewitt's RUclips videos helped immensely, plus a couple of others I found demonstrating the installation process.
    The CEL came back on shortly after installation of the bypass kit. I emailed Hewitt support and the owner replied immediately. That in itself spoke volumes to me about this company! Mr. Hewitt suggested I install the optional pressure sensor on Bank 1 to see if it would resolve the codes I was getting. I was impressed that he did not try to convince me into buying a pressure sensor for Bank 2 unless I truly needed it. Turns out I did indeed need the second pressure sensor which took all of one minute to install. Since then, my truck has been running like a champ!
    Finally, each time I placed an order I paid for overnight shipping from their location in SC to Dallas, TX and the part was sitting on my doorstep by 9:00 AM the next day. Again, great customer service. I highly recommend this company and their products!

    I had to replace the passenger side pump on my 07 4.7 tundra a few years back. Cost me about $400 doing it myself. Didn’t know anything about Hewitt back then and didn’t know the problem could reoccur because of terrible design by Toyota. Got another code for a pressure sensor (p2438) this week and went into limp mode. Got the double sensor harness bypass and SAIS bypass (gen 1). Putting the harnesses on and fishing the starter relay took all of 10 minutes. The exhaust block off took about an hour just because of the tight space on the passenger pump. Cleared the codes and now it runs like a top. It’s a bummer a company like Hewitt had to fix a significant issue from Toyota….

    Did this on my 2008 , the support was top notch. I am a long armed tall human so i had to improvise to get to the passenger side clip after trying the whole lay on top the engine. took a few hours to figure out. If you do not have a young small young person to do the passenger clip.
    So the 10mm bolt holding a small harness on top of the intake manifold once you remove it you can see the clip. to get to it the easiest way was to unclip the main harness from body on the passenger side, then there is a 2nd clip that is holding onto the engine via a 10mm bold. Once both are removed . You can push the harness around and reach the clip from the passanger side with no issue. I used small nose plier to push the tab down and pull. The harness clips are one one where you stick your small flat head screw driver and just pull. they are strong and they will clip back. Even if not its not a big issue, the 2nd clip is held in place with a 10mm which is easier to remove the bolt.
    Might help someone as this if know would take you 10 minutes to do the passenger side. the driver side is easy.
    The block off bolts were completely rusted so ended up getting a pdf from heweitt with some solution that i gave to my mechanic who charged me 100$ to get this done, If our pump is stuck open then this is needed to clear the error.
    Put 1000 miles in the July 4th weekend and got 2 mpg more than usual and it runs with alot pep. Smooth. Being a 2008 mine is out of the age for emission . i also got some gas smell in the cab which has disappeared

    After going to two different mechanics because I got a PO419 code in my 2010 4.6L Tundra and was told by both I needed 2 new air pumps from Toyota only! I started researching alternatives. I found Hewitt-tech Gen-2 bypass a cheaper solution. I’m 79 years old and the biggest problem I had installing was separating the electrical connections. I thought putting the block off plates between the ASV and the air tubes was going to be difficult but once I found the bolts to remove from the air tube brackets and gently with a 10mm wrench loosened the flange bolts I was able to breath! Everything else was easy and once I tidied up with zip ties reconnected the negative cable to the battery I crossed my fingers and started the truck which immediately died(normal) after restarting the engine light was gone and I drove it around the neighborhood. All is good and when I had questions I emailed them to support with pictures and got a response right away. What was even scarier after was thinking about those mechanics I took my truck to and how much it was going to cost me if the air pumps did not fix the problem because there are other pieces to this puzzle as simple as a corroded terminal in one of the connectors. Great money saving product with helpful people Thanks Hewitt-tech.

    Installed this on my 4.6 tundra with the pressure sensor add ons. Worth every penny and installation was a breeze. $5000 was the quote I got (definitely high balling) for the entire system rebuild. No brainer, the bypass kit is the way to go and they ship so fast, even back ordered parts were only an extra 2 days. They stay on top and stand behind their products.

    Just installed Gen II on my 2011 Tundra with 4.6L Engine. Took 2.5hrs. Rusted bolts under brackets holding AIDs slowed me way down. I sheared the heads off of 2 of them, can't believe those bolts extend into the wheel well exposed to salt. My bracket is held on with 1 bolt and a few attachments to wiring harness clips. Will need to get them drilled out in the future. Backoff plates required loosening all three 12mm bolts holding the ASVs on the engine block. Once the ASV is loose, you can open up a gap just big enough for the block off plates to install. First start of the engine was a success, we will see how this goes after a few cold overnights but so far...very impressed.

    • @Hewitt-tech
      @Hewitt-tech  Год назад +1

      Ahh... yes, I have run into trouble with the fender bolts before. I know this doesn't help now but may help someone else, if you hit the exposed threads really well with a wire brush/wheel and some penetrating oil it will help a lot in removing them. Drilling through or grinding the weld nut off and usign a stainless bolt with the nut on the topside would work well for that. On the 4.6L there is that one clamp that holds the air tube down to the top of the valve cover. We found it easiest to We found it easiest to just remove that bolt and carefully pry between the back of the cylinder and the air tube to open that gap. Loosening the air valve is a good and will help give you some more room as well. Getting the ASV bolted back down with the plate installed is a lot trickier if you remove the bolts holding down the ASV.
      Glad you were able to get it all installed without too much trouble though and that it is working.
      If you need anything just let us know.

    Just completed the install on my 2008 5.7 Tundra. As advertised the Passenger Side plug is a bear. I used a hand mirror to visualize the plug and went from the front... just couldn't do it. Son in law has smaller hands and he did it in like 30 seconds. I believe Mr. Hewitt's small frame skinny arms tech in the video is on the passenger side in the demo for a reason lol! I had previously bought the competitors (Ruitech) unit and installed but it failed after a year and went again into limp mode. After emailing Tim (owner) he sent back that they didn't sell their units for 2008 5.7s as it would inevitably fail (his words). Maybe it was my mistake but I usually don't mess up with something like the year model on my truck... anyway I'm glad I finally went with the Gen II and pressure sensor and my truck is running great at 350K miles.

    Just installed the gen-11 kit on a 2010 tundra, had replaced the switching valves with Dorman brand from Rock auto, one of them only lasted a week, installed the kit and still could not cancel one code, put old valves back in and all seems good. Pulling the intake is not a big deal if one has trouble getting at the switching valve connections.

    • @Hewitt-tech
      @Hewitt-tech  3 года назад +1

      It was a good call trying your factory valves to see if their pressure sensors were still good! We have recommended trying that on other engines than the 5.7L because the valves are easier to change on them. We typically recommend our pressure sensor addons to save having to replace the valves on any of the engines. The Gen2 must use an actual pressure sensor for each valve while the Gen1 kits we can use just a jumper harness or a harness with a pressure sensor if both are bad. Just let us know if you need anything else. Paul

    In response to a P2443 code, I installed Hewitt's Gen 2 Bypass Kit in my 2007 Tundra a couple of weeks ago and fixed the problem. Spray the bolts in the wheel well several times during the evening where you install the block plates and let them sit overnight, and loosened mine in the morning, no problem. And I'm in the rust belt and my truck is 16 years old. Regarding the two final electrical connections at the rear of the motor, Practice undoing on the new ones that comes with the kit, or practice on the one mounted on your air cleaner housing. Put a trouble light back there because if you can get a visual on it, it really helps. The drivers side is easier to access and depress, it's sitting right at the corner. If you have trouble depressing the clip, my thumb's kind of fat and wide so I taped a one inch long piece of very small dowelling up the centre of my thumb, a little piece of a twig off a tree would work fine. The passenger side, I threw a cushion down and climbed up there and I could barely see the clip past the wiring harness, but good enough to get a dental pick on it with my right hand, lift the locking clip just high enough to clear, and with my left hand in place and my fingertips just able to grab the connector, pull it apart...and Bob's your Uncle! Then hooking up the kit connectors is easy and away you go! Tech support is outstanding if you need help!

    I just completed installing this on my 2012 sequoia with the 5.7 engine. Gotta say the connection to the driver's side pump was extremely hard and did not go like the video. I found it helped removing the line he said but also i loosened the holders for the main wiring harness which was really hindering me from getting my hand on the clip. My clip was very hard to depress probably due to age. For the passenger side i used a picc and screwdriver to disconnect the wires. The picc raised the retaining clip and flat head pushed it off. The wifes little hand helped connect hewitts connection to the valve. I also got the caps installed (driver side was worst) and so far so good. No codes and shes running fine.

    Suggestion: Until you get the connector block off plug solution worked out, if you are just going to tape off that connector, pack it with dielectric grease first. That will make sure that no moisture forms inside and starts corroding it.

    Toyota would not honor the warranty to replace the SAIS in my 2012 Tacoma 4.0L because it was Rebuilt, and wanted over $2k to fix it. I could have ordered the part and replaced it myself probably, but it still was going to be over $500, and this was going to be the first time fixing something with the engine myself. AND I read reviews that part goes bad every 10k miles or so in ‘12 Tacomas because of bad design, so I decided to take my chances with the SAIS Bypass kit instead.
    Yes, yes, and yes. It paid off. It was not easy for me to figure out where everything had to connect to (it took me several hours overall), but once figured out, you’ll realize it wasn’t that difficult. The exhaust plates that come with the package are identical, but I came to learn that one of the SAIS ports in my vehicle was modified because that side was where it was rebuilt. All I had to do was get a metal file and grind one of the plates down a little to make it fit, tighten it back on, done.
    With the 2012 model you also may not need to install the purple relay wire they give you, but just follow the directions included in the package, and Customer Support will let you know if that’s the case. They were as quick and helpful as advertised. If you have any questions or problems, just contact them however you like. I cleared the CEL codes by disconnecting the battery, and have been running it for over three weeks now. No limp-mode, starts beautifully, runs great. Saved me big $$$ and I never have to worry about the part again. Thank you!

      Hey Andrew, Glad you got it all figured out, thanks for the feedback. Just so people don't get confused, you got one of our Gen-1 V54H kits, not a Gen-II kit shown in this video. The Gen-II would have been a much easier option for your 4.0L Tacoma than the V54H. The V54H kit connects to your MAF sensor and ECT sensor which on the Tacoma 4.0L is a trick to get to down the back of the engine. The Gen-II unit install on your would have taken 10-15 min..it replaces the air injection driver like in this video but plugs into both your air switching valves which are right there in the open on the passenger side of the engine. Just let us know if we can help with anything else. Thanks, Paul

    Installed this kit on my 09 5.7L Tundra before I had any issues and so far works fine. This was a challenge but doable. What helped was taking off the front wheels ( you will need to do this anyway to install the block-off plates) and lower the front end down for easier access to the air switching valves. Use one of the tires to stand on instead of a plastic slip and slide step stool to stand on. To remove the switching valve (made in hell) connectors, I had a very small flat bladed screwdriver 1 1/2" length with a shank 3/4" long with a dia. .075 (a little over 1/6"). A nail would probably work. Insert this in the top hole back of the connector to override the latch. Now you can focus on the connector body without damaging the wires in the process. Practice this with the connector on the airbox (same one used on the valves). Hope this helps.

    Just got done with the install. It's gonna a take 500 tries for some of us to unplug the 2 wires behind the manifold but don't give up. It will work. Put on knee protection and go up over the engine and feel your way around the plug cause you can't see it and need to feel your way around it. *** the hardest part was separating the flanges to put in the blocking plate. I spent hours until I got a floor jack and jacked up the stick that was pushing on the stud. The trick was to have the middle of the stick backed into break/disk so when I jack it up it won't pop off or push the jack back. Use hard wood cause I pushed it almost to breaking point.

    The 1 hour install estimate is very optimistic, the passenger side is very difficult to reach if you have large hands. I’m probably going to have to remove and or move a lot more of the factory main wiring harness anchors to get at the bank 2 ASV connection.

    • @Hewitt-tech
      @Hewitt-tech  Год назад +1

      Sorry you are having or had a hard time with the connectors. The passenger side in particular on the 5.7L certainly can be difficult, even for an experienced mech/tech. Unfortunately, it is what it is which is why we warn about it in the video and instructions and point out some things you can remove and unbolt to get a little more room. No sugarcoating there.
      A topside creeper or placing several layers of cardboard on top of the engine bay you can lay on helps a lot so you don't have to support yourself with your hands.
      I find laying the tip of a small flat headed screwdriver on top of the tab really helps depress the locking tab and makes it easier to pull the connectors off. You can also use a long screwdriver or blunt punch/ round file to depress the tab and use long reach needle nose pliers or another long screwdriver to catch the side lip of the connector to push-pull the connector off.
      Just be really careful not to damage the wiring.
      If we can help with anything just give us a call.

      Both air injection control drivers are replaced with one GenII unit. Now they come with our custom blank plug caps so instead of taping either off or leaving one connected you remove both air injection control drivers and put the blank plugs in both big 2 wire connectors.

      The Gen2 bypass kit will not affect your vehicle negatively in any way. On your vehicle the SAIS will only operate on a cold soak start (Off for 7hrs or more). Not running the system on that start is no different than starting it cold throughout the day. Our bypass kits have been installed on vehicles for almost 10 years now with no issues.

    • @Hewitt-tech
      @Hewitt-tech  3 года назад +6

      The module and plate installations are covered separately because they both vary according to engine and year. The block off plates are an integral part of the overall bypass solution and may not be 100% required for every instance. However, they are always recommended to be installed with the module and are the only thing that can prevent the valves from leaking in the future if they are not currently. If you do not currently have valve stuck open codes you can install the module first and see where that gets you but it always best to install them so you don't have to worry about the valves later on. If you don't install them just make sure to put them in your glovebox with the instructions because if you get a valve stuck open code later you will need to install them at that point and clear the codes(s) again.

      The GenII kit is compatible with all current model years and reflashes. I just installed the gen 2 kit on a 2008 4.7 tundra i just picked up. Great instructions and worked like a charm! Only thing is I installed the block off plates at the air valve. Is that okay and can I take the air valves out all together

    • @Hewitt-tech
      @Hewitt-tech  Год назад +1

      @hinds90 In order to remove the Air Switching Valves located on either sider of the engine you will need a full delete kit. That is the Gen 2 Bypass Kit and 2 Pressure Sensor Addons. However, if you only have the Bypass Kit then they will need to remain on the vehicle. This is because there is a pressure sensor inside the Air Switching Valve the ECM is still reading. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to give us a call.

    • @Hewitt-tech
      @Hewitt-tech  Год назад +1

      @@BullseyeMetalWerks Correct. You can get two of our pressure sensors add-ons to accomplish that, one to replace each of the air switching valves. If your air valves/sensors are still good, you can also cut the sensors off the air switching valves and get rid of the rest of the valve. They have to be the factory type of valve with the metal body and the black plastic top where the plug is to do this. If you cut all the way through the square black plastic body section as close to the metal valve body what remains is the sensor/connector. When doing so you will cut through the plastic and will cut two wires but those are only for the solenoid coil portion which are not connected or used with the Gen2 kit anyways.

    I just bought a 2012 TRD Rock warrior and I've been getting a P0101 with nothing else when I give it some beans. The last owner obviously faced the same problem because it has a new MAF and new PCV on it. No obvious vaccum leaks. Once everything is installed you will need to clear the codes by resetting the ECM with either an OBDII tool or by disconnecting the neg. battery terminal for at least 2 min. to turn off the CEL.
      The block off plates are to permanently close the air switching valves and are used to prevent valve stuck open codes.

      The P2442 is a Bank2 Air Switching Valve Stuck Open Code. If you did not install the block off plates you will need to get them installed and clear the codes again. If can verify that you do have the plates installed, this usually indicates the pressure sensor in that valve has failed. They can be damaged by continuing to drive the vehicle with the valve stuck open codes for a while before installing the kit. It doesn't happen often but the damage can also show up much later. There is also the possibility the sensor just failed but we usually only see that with aftermarket parts and not the factory Toyota sensors. We have kit add-ons for the sensors depending on which kit you are using to take care of this without having to replace the air switching valve. Give us a call and we can hep troubleshoot and get you what you need.

    • @Hewitt-tech
      @Hewitt-tech  Год назад +1

      @michaelnorman6905 Our Bypass Kit can be installed as a preventative or reactive measure to SAIS failures and trouble codes (CEL).. The main reason for our kits is to prevent limp mode that is associated with many of the trouble codes caused by a failing/failed secondary air injection system. The block off plates are effectively there to permanently close the air switching valves. This prevents exhaust gases from leaking backwards through leaking/damaged/failed air switching valve and cause the valve stuck open codes which are the most common SAIS code that cause limp mode. The block off plates do not affect the normal flow of exhaust, they only block off the secondary air exhaust ports in the head. I have included a few links that to blog post that further explain if you are interested.

      Yes, the kit can take care of that code as long as it is not the result of a damaged pressure sensor or ECM. Typically, if this is something that just started you don't have to worry about that and the kit will take care of it.
      If you have been driving it that way for a while there it would be best if you gave us a call so we can discuss the possibility of also needing we call a Pressure Sensor replacement. This is a kit addon we use so you don't have to pull the intake manifold and replace the air switching valves just to fix a sensor. (2011 Tundra 5.7L w/207K miles) What codes will cause the Tundra to go to limp mode? Current codes are P106B, P2431 and P2433 codes. My tundra still drives like normal. I can cruise at 80 mph fine no power cut. Can I drive it with the codes on forever or will it need to be fixed? I don't live in a state that has emission testing. Can I just get Gen 1 kit or will I need to get GEN 2 kit? Will GEN 2: PRESSURE SENSOR REPLACEMENT SINGLE be needed as well since I have P106B code?

    • @Hewitt-tech
      @Hewitt-tech  Год назад +1

      The codes you have are directly related to the pressure sensor circuit in your Bank 1 SAIS Air Switching valve. The P2433 - Bank 1 Pressure Sensor Ckt High is an electrical fault code that will typically cause limp mode that you will not be able to clear until it is repaired. Normally when we see this code it is the result of wiring damage or caused by driving the vehicle for to long with an active valve stuck open code. With the circuit codes, especially if it showed up suddenly with no other issues, we first recommend inspecting the wiring and making repairs as needed. In the colder months it is not uncommon for rodents to chew on the wiring.
      The P106B code is a pressure sensor correlation code and the P2431 is a sensor performance/range code. The ECM compares the two pressure sensors in the air switching valves and the EVAP pressure sensor, if one is more than 5-6 kPa different than the other two it will throw the P106B code to say there is some sort of problem. This code by itself does not typically cause limp mode. In a case like this with your codes it is easy to say that the bank 1 pressure sensor is the problem.
      The firs thing to do is check the wiring and then our normal recommendation for this would be the Gen2 kit and at least 1 PSR for the Bank 1 sensor.
      You could use the Gen1 kit and would still need a PSR but for anything 2008 and newer we will always recommend the Gen2 vs the Gen1 V54H kit just because it covers so many other issues and is by far the best solution to ensure you shouldn't have any issues with the system again.
      Please give us a call Toll free and we would be glad to walk you through your problem and our solutions with you.

      Not at this time. I have one for a 4.6l that is pretty much the exact same but have not finished editing it yet.

    2007 Tundra 5.7, If the pressure sensor of bad or coding is there just one. Meaning does the add on kit just need and come with one replacement plug and play air pressure sensor replacement unit?

      On your 2007 5.7L, there are two pressure sensors, one in each air switching valve. Regardless of our kits, your vehicle needs both of those to function correctly. Because of the way the Gen2 kits function, you need one pressure sensor add-on for each damaged sensor. Each of the sensors add-ons for the Gen 2 kit are one sensor. With the Gen1 kits we can get away with using a jumper harness to use one of the good sensors for both banks or a single add-on sensor for both.

      Then, will the Gen 1 kit work for my above vehicle? And if so overall cost me less to bypass the sais?
