In all fairness to Zidane, it's not like his breakdown on Terra was natural. His literal creator had just tried to rip out his soul, and Zidane just happened to be strong enough that it didn't fully work and the power of friendship and cool guitars were able to undo the damage.

To clarify, just being on Terra was messing with his mind since its blue light was exactly the same shade as the light he had run away from home as a child to find, what with it being the only thing he remembered from his "home" before realizing that Tantalus was his real home, which was exacerbated by the existence of the Genomes which proved that he really was a member of an invading race, but even then his reaction to Garland telling him that he was designed to be the Angel of Death to the world he now considered to be his new home was basically "Not if I kill you first!"
To which Garland responded by going "Yeah, good luck doing that to someone with Admin Privileges on your brain. Time to Restore you to Factory Settings, buddy."

I actually felt that reflected the reality of broken lives that the entire Burmecian/Cleyran people as a whole suffered through. She as their representative couldn't even bring herself to continue for a long time, and that's something I feel personally now. She recovers enough to be able to help out at the end and save her friends, along with having the strength to carry on even as Fratley can't remember her. She's the single most tragic character in the series in my opinion and her place in and out of the party in game reflect that.

I'm so glad to see FF9 finally get love. It's kind of a return to classic final fantasy after 7 and 8 and i feel it's kind of over looked (and also then 10 happened). I really love how you can check in on the characters and how it shows they're always doing stuff but it's also completely optional. FF9 was my first final fantasy game so maybe I'm baised but I feel like the character writing is just so STRONG in 9 (freya and amarant aside) that most other ff characters feel kinda shallow to me. Whenever I talk about final fantasy to friends, I always wonder why i'm the only one who's hyped for FF9. I love FF9. One of my favorites. You mention working together early on, in regards to Vivi and Steiner working together with Sword Magic. I would've loved for that to happen with other party members as well. Maybe have a team up with Zidane/Freya/Amarant for an attack. Perhaps Vivi can combine with Eiko. A black magic spell that drains from both their pools but, in exchange, the party is healed by the amount of damage dealt (split evenly between the party members). Maybe even tie some things into story progression, once Steiner and Zidane finally trust each other, rather than being beleaguered buddies, they gain a combo attack that both deals damage equal to both their attacks divided by 2 but also steals. (Yes, I know 'mug' is a skill Zidane can equip but did anyone ever bother with it? It always did a pitiful amount of damage that I never used it, instead opting to just give Zidane something else, like resistance to a status ailment.). And Quina could have a unique special blue magic2 with each party member, emphasizing his/her role in the party as a versatile blue mage.
Also, random tangent at the end, I hardly ever used Quina in my first playthrough. Didn't care for eating things, thought the eat requirement was too low. But holy shit was Quina useful for that last boss fight. Just Angel Snack to quickly remedy all party members.

    ...Hades in under 12 hours?
You don't have to do that, you just have to get to a specific spot in Memoria in under 12 hours.
Still ridiculous, but not AS bad.

What a tease! Starts with a nice detailed breakdown of the first part of the game, then pretty much blasts through all the way to the end!
Still though, quite a decent analysis of all the pros and cons.

I remember looking for this game when I was living in the UK and it was a nightmare to find in 2003 to 2004. Just when i was about to leave in late 2005 I went to my local game store and said to the guy at the counter and say is there any chance you have Final Fantasy 9 in your store. He said quickly said no but another guy said to me across the store said, " Wait right there". From there he went out the back and I had no idea what he was doing and came out with a great copy of the game for on 5 pounds. The going price on ebay was more 30- 35 so I was super stoke. From this I played it and I will have to say its the best in series for me. Its under rated as you say with characters battle mechanics and that god dam great music. If you get a chance definitely play it as it is really really good Love the video

For me it was after a few replays and i realised that vivi had died that got me in the end (and it still does nearly 20 years later) and that they rebuilt the castle with an homage to vivi in form of the viviesque shape on the fron of the castle at the very end. This is/was and always will be my favourite game

I loved the little ways in which they altered the game play, such as the dungeon where the weak weapons were the strongest or the place you couldn't use magic. Makes a repetitive and slow combat system feel less dragging, as you always have to keep something in mind.
