Austin takes a look at some Forgotten Squaresoft games, all of which will probably never get that coveted Nintendo Switch port. In fact all of these are pretty much lost to time. Let's step away from Final Fantasy and take a deep look.
Welcome back to Square Enix month! FF9 part 2 is still in the oven, gimmie a bit more time loves.

Id rather you take your time and do FFIX proper justice. Thanks for Square Enix Month!
you should play Musashi: Samurai Legend for the PS2
But Legend of Dragoon
I know it wasn’t in English but why didn’t you mention Squares Tom Sawyer RPG that deserves a remake more than FF7
Are you pronouncing Einhänder correctly? The ä is pronounced Ei.
"All their other games have a cult following but this will always be an obscure title"
99% of comments: OMG THREADS OF FATE!!!
Einhänder doesn't mean "a hand", it means "one hander"
danke haha
more like "wanker"
sorry
Mein Hander
The thing about dying and restarting at the last checkpoint is explained if you know the lore.
The pilots (They don't call themselves Einhanders, that's the after-war codename the ship was given) were part of a suicide squad to wreak as much havoc as possible and relaying info back to their home base before dying. When you "die", another fighter will have arrived at the checkpoint of the last fighter.
@@sparda74 ...wow that's dark lmao
AAAAA FINALLY SOMEONE TALKS ABLUT THREADS OF FATE
Olive Rose I know right?!
It's good to know others know of this game
I loved that game, game dialogues are all funny. Well i loved all squaresoft game back then tho lol.
The hope of Threads of Fate being mentioned in this video is the sole reason I clicked on it
I only remember this game named as dewsprim or something
I remember Threads of Fate
Such a charming little game
I remember seeing it set up as a demo in Target as a kid. I got to play it. I thought it was fun. I wanted it.
...I still want it, honestly.
For some reason the graphics were always a lot better in my memory.
I want to go back in time while I'm still playing it on my PS1. I can't remember what's my age when I played this but I can still remember I re-played this game over and over so many times.
Mint is so funny
@@ootdega god i haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaated that game
@James Brincefield Hmm, sounds interesting! I think I'll try those games out soon
I see threads of fate in the thumbnail!
Smashed that click but not really because that would break my screen
Threads of Fate was a rough experiment but damn I still cherish that game. Some how it got a fan doujin fan game sequel that was pretty good too called Duo Princess with Mint and her sister.
I actually played duo princess
@@Alexeon So how was it?
I remember putting a ton of hours into Threads of Fate.
Bushido Blade is one of the best games on the PS1 fight me
Sam P bishop blade 2 was better
@@Nightcast9 I don't think Bushido Blade 2 had body damage. Downgrade.
This guy looks kind of young to understand just how unique and next-gen Bushido Blade was when it came out
I heartily agree...
I agree and I accept your challenge!
I absolutely love Brave Fencer Musashi. There's a lot of nostalgia wrapped up in it for me. I may have to try to track down Threads of Fate.
Ah, sir musashi.. why did thou cometh hither?
Both games are nostalgia in physical form
YOU ARE NOW HEARING THE FOREST THEME!
Stellar boss music in that one. An unfortunately overlooked title.
You do know emulation exists right?
It's probably just japanese people seeing a german word without context and thinking it sounds cool, but if you say Einhänder in german you would most likely mean a one handed sword.
well the Einhänder logo is an one handed sword if you look closely
Isn't an Einhänder a type of one-handed sword?
Yeah, it is. The word Einhänder isn´t used in another context in German.
a... one-hander, if you will.
Yes
Yes, just like a zweihander is a two-handed sword.
Hmm thought it was one of those hand and a half swords ..
Hey, a 1/3 of a second of Legend of Mana. I clapped.
alright Bushido Blade looks phenomenal lol snagging that asap
It’s the shit
Bushido Blade was godlike. What a fantastic idea and honestly executed really well. We need this game back
Oh man, yeahhh..I know this concept is cliche in and of itself, and is often unnecessary, but if EVER there was a game crying out for "keep the same mechanics, but update the graphics and sound to modern lwvels", it's 'Bushido Blade'...hell, it honestly could probably be accomplished as a downloadable indie
Finally! Someone talks about Einhänder, the best shmup Squaresoft made. I sunk into that game for hours as a kid when my bro bought it.
They made more shmups?
The main reason why people know King’s Knight isn’t because of Final Fantasy XV, it’s because of ProJared.
Sad but true
@@lyleabner2475 not sad at all
blackwolfrules56 So you support a convicted abuser and pedophile?
@@thatmilk3655 You're not up to date are you? All that was proven false, in a video he released with hard evidence.
@Most Deadest Pool of em All. Yeah. Considering all we had before then was hearsay and a lack of proof from any side, it's the hardest we've got.
Wait. It took until KH3 for an Einhänder Gummi Ship to show up?! Thats like the most obvious Square themed Gummi possible. Shame the game's so pricy now. It's worth playing for the bosses' mangled German alone.
Ah yes, my favorite Squaresoft game, "Air Gays"
Threads of Fate is an extremely easy game?
*Flashbacks to Mel's level and the fight against dragon where I repeatedly get my ass kicked*
I did my best, okay ;_;
Threads of Fate! *Thank you.*
I’m so happy I wasn’t the only person on Earth to play Threads of Fate lmao
Maybe where was living during middle school was weird because when bought Threads of Fate, there six were others who had it too. Ah, good times.
If you liked Bushido Blade, play One Strike, it's like Bushido Blade, but 2D, and really cheap.
Also the new sam sho might as well be Bushido Blade in a good way
Hit me with that Xenogears. Best game fight me
I take Chrono trigger over xenogears but it's close...
I agree!
Fight excepted best game Final Fantasy tactics lol
I loved gears, but that second half was rough. That game and Front mission was my jam. Though Live a Live was great too and Bahamut Lagoon? Fucking phenomenal with its mechanics. Oh and Bushido Blade.
The game was alright. First part was great, then it got to the long sitting and dumping exposition part and it lost me.
In a weird alternate universe, Ryo Hazuki is obsessed with beating his 3D World Runner and Rad Racer high scores.
Oh man, I played Threads of Fate a couple of years ago and I’ve not stopped thinking about it since. I have a bit of a hard time quantifying what made it such an incredible experience for me. I think one of the primary factors is just how cozy it is... The music, the art style, the characters, the tone of the story, and even the simplicity of the gameplay all just feel very cozy to me. I’m sorry to hear you didn’t have as great of a time with it as I did, but I was super happy to see you cover it nonetheless!
Side note: Junya Nakano is an incredible composer. I’d highly advise looking into his solo albums if you want some god-tier music.
Coziest JRPG of All Time👌🏿💯 Junya's music is S-rank
I played Threads of Fate to death when I was young and I'm just happy to see most of the comments talking about it
Hey, that's my Hello Kitty Kruisers footage ;)
Great video Austin! I've literally never heard of Threads of Fate before this... I kinda wanna try it out now. I've been loving replaying PS1 rpgs lately.
Dude, I loved Threads of Fate. Finished it probably more than 7 times by now. (Used to hate the Mel stages, but now I guess the nostalgia has softened my stance on them.)
(Trivia: Ken Akamatsu was supposed to do a manga adaptation of Dewprism back in the early-mid 2000's. There was even a drawing of Mint in his style floating around at the time. But the project was scrapped. Some of the designs from the project, however, ended up influencing the designs in "Negima". So, heh, all's well that ends well, I guess.)
Threads of Fate actually was made by the same people as Brave Fencer Musashi. They even have some references to the legendary gear you'd find, such as a chamber pot being called "legendary helmet" and so on. Overall I would say the game was an improvement, but the lack of voice acting really left something to be desired. Also, small correction: Mint WAS supposed to be the rightful heir to the throne, but because of her poor manners, Maya was chosen instead. Of course this was all a ruse by the Doll Master, who had brainwashed her, but that's another story. Mint was right to be pissed and even justified, world-domination aside.
Man I remember playing a demo of Threads of Fate back in the day...
Man, we played the hell out of Bushido Blade back in the day -- what a trip down memory lane.
Einhander's honestly one of the best shmups ever made imo. Feels great to play and the atmosphere's sublime.
*Sees Title*
*Instantly thinks of Racing Lagoon*
Me:Go on. I’m intrigued.

*looks at comment section *
Bruh... I think you're mistaken here.
....Also, I'm still waiting for a sequel. The secret ending literally set it up, TELL me you don't want to see a charmingly rendered sequel set in desert with spoopy ruins to spelunk through. You do. You KNOW you do. I NEED WORLD DOMINATION, DAMMIT.
IMMEDIATELY LIKED BECAUSE OF THREADS OF FATE
"Air Gays"
Ein händ is all you need for a good time!
Came here to finally hear someone talk about Live A Live.
Disappointed to the max.
Probably because it never got an official western release.
I wish more people talked about it though...
What a gem that game is
I remember playing a demo disc and playing an action RPG game where you could turn into monsters you beat, and I've been trying to figure out that game's name for well over a decade. And now I know it was Threads of Fate. Holy shit, thank you for showing this game, you've solved a mystery that's been bugging me for YEARS.
Finally Threads of Fate my gosh literally have met no one who knows about it my childhood
Im pretty sure that tall dude with the afro archetype in bushido blade 2, cowboy bebop, and many other IPs is inspired by Jim Kelly from the Enter the Dragon
Don't forget about Killer 7!
I remember playing Threads of Fate over and over as a kid. I... I may have wanted to be Rue real bad as a kid.
None of these are forgotten. You just weren't born when they were released. lol
I remember Threads Of Fate. The main girl character in there was very nasty. Halfway through the game she said she wanted to condemn her bigger sister to a lifetime of cleaning toilets.
Man she was evil.
YES! EINHANDER! **** YEAH!
I heard somewhere that the source code of the game was literally lost in a fire, because I want to see the game get remade. That soundtrack is SOOOOOOOOO DAMN GOOD!
I loved Threads of Fate. Back in the PSX era, there was this senstation that Square could do no wrong, and it was totally acceptable to try the non-RPG games they released. I was hyped for Einhander and still cherish my copy, and I enjoyed Threads of Fate's double character unfolding story.
1. Old PC games have nothing to do with S-Soft. Soft was a brand of them. Of course if you just use the brand name as alternative for their company name - sure.
2. Alpha was the first game where they worked together with Uematsi-san. Worth mentioning.
3. Einhänder iis German for one-/single-handed weapon. Not " a hand".
Lol hi I'm still in the ToF fandom alabit a dead one! Lol still waiting on that cliffhanger when you get the final ending lol
Threads of Fate was one of those games I rented a bunch of times as a teen. I'm a definite apologist for it. It's worth checking out sometime. My copy of Vagrant Story was faulty and would lock up at a certain point, so I never got to see the end of that one. Oddly, my copy of Bushido Blade is ALSO faulty, and none of the cutscenes play, so I've never actually seen the story of that game, despite playing it countless times.
So many good games on this list. All of which I still have a copy for and play often and on. Especially Ehiander (or however you spell it). Such a good game.
If they were forgotten, they wouldn't be so expensive on the second hand market.
Einhander as in "one handed" based on the ships single arm(manipulator) That game was bad ass
I did not forget Bushido Blade. I LOVED BUSHIDO BLADE EVEN TO THIS DAY.
How would the Wii U have fared if Square had done a Final Fantasy 7 remake as a Launch Title?
Yes
Probably not much better. 1 game really cant make or break a console. Hell, i didnt even know the wii u was a thing or came out until much later. Also have ff7 would have been good but wouldnt have helped the lack of any other games worth playing
@@darrellgardner4561 lmao are you serious, Tekken sold entire consoles back in the day.
I had threads of fate. I love threads of fate. I still have it and I treasure it greatly and I love it
I figured Driving Emotion Type-S was a play on the PS2's CPU being called the Emotion Engine, while "Type-S" was "Type-Squaresoft". Basically that the name was literally saying that this was Squaresoft's PS2 driving game.
Huh, when that game came out I never noticed that myself, but I was in the US Navy at the time, so didn't get a lot of news in English, being stationed in Japan. Looking back, it does make sense.
If only they put less emotion to the controls.
Thread's of fate, bushido blade 1 and 2.....such memory i enjoyed it all
Also from thread's of fate: Pulsar Inferno Typhoon Omega.....PInTO in short
At least Threads Of Fate is available on the US PlayStation Store as a PS1 Classic... I bought it off my US Account last time I bought some PSN Vouchers for said Account and from what I've played it was pretty awesome 😁 👍
My child hood was full of Squaresoft JRPGs and others by them. Heck I had to get Threads of Fate on my Vita since I used to own it and it got lost in a move. So many wonderful games, but mostly amazing JRPGs. o3o
8:21- LOL 😆
Yeah, I knew Square Enix were originally two separate Companies back in the days. I only found out on the same year the merger happened.
And Square made a lot of interesting games back in the Super Famicom and PS1 days.
This probably got posted by a gazillion other Germans but "Einhänder" is a term for a melee weapon designed to be used with one hand.. contrary to a "Zweihänder" which is, as you should know as a gamer, designed to be used with both hands.
They probably wanted to emphasize that the ship is small, fast, mobile and deadly.
You might be surprised. There's a hundreds of Square anime games in Japan that never been translated to English but they're still popular, pretty popular in JAPAN :)
Bushido Blade I & 2 are amazing and I still own 1 on the PlayStation. It was kinda spiritually succeeded by Way of the Samurai and Kengo but I really wish this franchise continued.
Yes, Yes that was Jim Hawking's actress.
EInhänder has nothing to do with "it looks like ONE HAND = EINE HAND -> an Einhänder was a single handed sword :-) also... where is Front Mission :-)
Oh boy, this’s gonna be good.
Can’t wait to hear about the forgotten Squaresoft gems over years. Y’know, the ones that unfortunately couldn’t become mega-successful like Final Fantasy, and so got left in the dust...
I just played a little Threads of Fate two days ago; it's a really cool game and is among my top obscure retro titles. It hasn't aged perfectly, but I love it. Saga Frontier and the Tomba series are some other notables for me on that list if anyone is curious.
Threads of Fate was awesome, I know it not talked about a lot but glad you brought it to light
Einhander is one of those games I remember playing at my cousins house and really liking as a kid but could never remember the name of.
Threads of Fate had kind of a sequel for the PC called "Duo Princess" where you play as the sisters. It's more like a doujinsoft like Recetttear in terms of style
Eihnhander
Tobal
Erheizh
Xenogears
Treath of Fate
Parasite Eve 1-2
And that action rpg w a samurai ( I dont remember the title )
I LOVED Threads of Fate, and I'm so upset I lost my disk. It was really good, a good length and I loved it.
I'm getting strong DarkCloud 2 vibes off of Threads of Fate. I wonder if any of those devs went on to work for Level5 in the PS2 era?
I’m glad that Dewprism/Threads of Fate was in this video.
Even better, seeing folks in comments who liked the game.
I’ve always loved the game. Heck, even my online handle is based on “Rue”.
Loved threads of fate. Ugh gotta replace my copy down the line. Good enemy squad. Haha Trap Master
Is that Locke’s Theme from FF6 in the intro!?
THREADS OF FATE! Austin, I've been trying to remember what this game is for at least 15 years, probably longer, but I could never find it. The only thing I really remembered were the little tadpoles creatures. I played it once or twice at a cousins, then they sold it, and I've been trying to figure out what it was ever since 😂
I LOVED LOVED LOVED Threads of Fate! So happy you mentioned it in this video. It probably has more of a cult following than you think. Great story, great gameplay, AWESOME music! I even own the official Japanese soundtrack. Also, you forgot to mention how once you beat both character's stories and have game completion save data on your memory card for both, you unlock the true ending to the game and get to play through the final battle with both characters at once. Such a great game! Every one here should play it!
I forgot about threads of fate hntil right now. I played it when i was super super young and loved it
Goodjob austin can't wait for more like this with games that are in a coma like sega (virtua fighter) capcom (darkstalkers) konami (bloody roar) huh now that i think about it they all forget about fighting games and bandai namco(.hack) damn BN broke the patten
Threads of Fate has a good soundtrack! Junya Nakano is really good when it comes to ambience. Apprently he did a few tracks for Final Fantasy X and redid the Soundtrack for Final Fantasy IV. Very underrated composer
is Gambit From X-Men in Bushido Blade 1?
I have Einhänder, IT'S VERY TOUGH!!!
I love Bushido Blade 2. I never played the first one though. XD
I want to like BB2 but I hate the bosses. The teleporting Shinto priest and armored samurai aren't fun to fight.
I own threads of fate. I fucking love it!!!
Threads of Fate is so good. I loved it as a kid and even now it feels so cozy to go through.
I disagree with you threads of fate has a huge fan following
i loved threads of fate growing up, but i only ever completed mint's half. ehehe~
I was sitting through the whole video wondering if you were going to talk about Threads of Fate and then you ended with it. I know I never hear anybody talking about it so I figured it should be on here. You didn't disappoint.
As forgotten as they are under appreciated.
Parasite Eve, Einhänder, Musashi, Chrono Cross? Masterpieces in their respective genres. No surprise they had quality prior to that.
Also the fact you mentioned Suncoast just got me deep to the core
Now go board the PINTO to get the [Relic]! Love Threads of Fate.
I came here looking for Threads of Fate it is my favorite game of all time. :D
ohhh defenatly should have shown the footage of the final fight for rue also there is a ending cutscene you get by beating both sides
I was waiting for chocobo Racing 2, but it never happened, i love that game!
_Händer_ in *Einhänder* is pronounced “HEYN-der” or “HEN-der”. Definitely not “HAN-der” or “HAHN-der”. The Ä changes the usual “ah” sound of A into an “EY” sound (that’s EY as in HEY).
Also, the Arabic sea monster, Bahamūt, is pronounced “BAH-hah-MOOT” (long OO as in “boot”).
No. Ä has nothing to do with the same sound of "ey." And he pronounces it fine. The way an American would say "apple" or "hand", which is how I heard it from him at least, is very very similiar to an Ä. Your "Hen" was also a good example. Even a bit closer.
- A native German
Yepp, agree to the other answer, I'm German as well. A like in apple. Definitely not like ey in hey.
I have never seen anyone talk about threads of fate. That was one of my favorite games as a kid.
Threads of fate great.
Duo princess? Awesome!
*THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR MOM DRESSES YOU AT THIRTY*
Threads of fate is a Great game spent hours playing that game as a kid.
As a Boomer, I can tell you that Driving Emotion Type is the only game mentioned in the video I did not own and play when I was younger. you did a great job with this video. I have no idea 3d worldrunner and Rad Racer were square games
