    Street Fighter The Movie The Game deserves some degree of mention. While everyone involved seemed to be on a completely different pages as to exactly what they were making, at least some of those involved viewed the game as Capcom attempting to copy the look and success of Mortal Kombat.

    • @Invidente7

      It was supposed to be Street fighter 3 at some point, and Sheng Long himself was almost in the game. At least they had Akuma.

    • @BainesMkII
      @BainesMkII Год назад +3

      @@Invidente7 The SF3 story has been debunked. It was apparently a misunderstanding on the part of some people at Intelligent Technologies.
      Capcom USA had denied the claim all the way back at the beginning of 1995.
      Polygon's oral history article is even more telling. Not only does everyone from Capcom Japan deny the idea (instead it was viewed as a spin-off), even some of the people at Intelligent Technologies deny it. While Alan Noon said he remembered the game being pitched as SF3 and even found a design document that called it such, Ralph Megosa said Capcom never approved that name and that it was likely just an (IT) internal development label.
      That's what I meant when I said everyone seemed to be on completely different pages as to what they were making. While some people at IT thought Capcom was looking to outside Western developers to "save" the SF franchise, Capcom Japan was just dumping off a project (making a game based on the live action movie) that they *didn't even want to make.* The whole reason SFTMTG exists is apparently because the president of Capcom had first wanted a movie made for a Capcom property, and then wanted a game made for the movie...

    Fun fact about Eternal Champions: “Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's 1995 album E. 1999 Eternal, was loosely inspired by the video game, not just in title, but even as far as the use of samples, such as the character bios theme for "Eternal", and the bad ending theme being the basis of the original "Crossroad", which would later be remixed, becoming the group's biggest single and earning them a Grammy.”

    There is a Mexican Mortal Kombat clone called "Kombate Mexicano X".
    I bought a copy of it when I went to the EGS (a gaming convention that had support from big brands) like 16 years ago in the indie section that was behind the important booths, the person demoing the game was actually one of the developers/actors who was digitized into the game.
    I may still have the game somewhere in my old CD collection.
    As a Mexican game, it had mechanics inspired from King of Fighters, references to corrupt politicians, pop culture figures, and El Chavo, plus a ton of albures.
    I loved bringing it to the IT classroom in high school, where we would play it while the teacher wasn't looking.

      My country had one of those, but it was a flash game full of the "memes" from that era plus some foreign, legendary ones like Edgar (from "La Caída de Edgar").

    • @manamaster6
      @manamaster6 7 месяцев назад

      @@CristianNavia0807 it was closer to Mortal Kombat, as the fighters were digitized actors.
      I don't know the budget it may have had, but it was an entertaining game with around 20 characters, but I may be misremembering it.
      It can still be found online.
      In their official page, which is now offline, one could download fighters for free, as back then downloading the full game at once would have taken a while, one could download one by one.

While it might feel clunky by today's standards it's deep story telling for the tournament modes made it an amazingly fun dos alternative to Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter 2 (for a single player). If you had the ability to use 2 Gamepads it could also be very fun with 2 players even if it wasn't as deep on a mechanical level. Ran on everything and had a shareware (and then freeware) version. Free vs the 50 to 60 Dollars Mortal Kombat was at the time made it an easy choice for me. And damn it's soundtrack is full of bangers

    I loved the character "Larcen" in Eternal Champions. He was a bad ass to my young mind, reminding me of a mix of Batman and Dick Tracy (Dick Tracy being a game I also played a lot of the Genesis.)

    Time Killers, to this day, is still my all time favorite Fighting game. Nothing can dethrone it.
    So you know, i am fully serious. It was one of two retro cabinets in my community college cafeteria in 1998, and I spent more time on that than in class. Time Killers literally cause me to fail college

    Weapon lord is made by a dev that includes one James "Djames" Goddard, industry veteran and the creator of SF character Dee Jay, who interestingly, went on to make the latest version of Killer Instict
    Holding down a button before doing a motion input is called a Negative Edge, and a lot of the games on your example used that input, including Primal Rage, Eternal Champions, and Weaponlord

    fun fact, studio gigante requested that fist of the lotus not be marketed as a mortal kombat successor, as it was trying to be it's own thing, however microsoft didn't care, and slapped that idea on every aspect of the advertising, this backfired when mk got it's groove back after a period of poor reception, and with microsoft caring more about another fighting game they were pushing, only for that to get entirely recalled, yeah tldr, lotus didn't sell well, and is now just kinda overlooked.
    the ultimate tragedy is that the studio was offered the chance to make a sequel, but after the poor sales they needed a bigger budget to do anything they actually wanted to, so they went with an offer from thq to make a wwe game, even if their hearts weren't as in it as last time …that game was wrestlemania 21, the one that instead of shipping the final build, printed the beta build, causing the game to bomb hard, killing the studio before they got both the budgets and creative control over projets to make the games they truly wanted.

    In1995 My parrents left me in one arcade after another while touring Las Vegas. In MGM some dude had the job of bringing in some new machines so I chose to help him because he was dealing heavy and I was naturally strong. One of those machines was primal rage. Once he got it set up, he gave me 100 credits on the game. I beat it with every character.

    OMF was actually a decent game, as long as you had the Gravis GamePad (or GamePad Pro for two-player mode). The character-building part of the game made it worth playing over and over again.
