Plenty of people have talked about Roth doing acrobatics like the mid air splits and other feats as far back as the mid 70's at backyard parties in the L.A. area when VH were playing before they ever got signed, and VH's first album came out in 1978. So it's pretty common knowledge in the L.A. area, and I lived there for well over 15 years and ran in musical circles, that Roth was doing this years before their debut album in 78'. It's one of the main reasons they got signed. VH, and in particular Roth, were blowing people away with their stage presence. David Lee Roth's influence on frontmen during his era was incalculable. The ENTIRE decade of the 80's was more or less one rock frontman after another trying, and failing, to be like David Lee Roth. I would watch videos on MTV and inevitably you'd see it. I would often think to myself when watching these other guys in videos "yep, trying to be like David Lee Roth". Prince was obviously very talented, but that doesn't mean he was the originator of everything he played or performed. He wasn't.
@@KingDevilCharger You cannot actually say that. It makes no difference at all. All im saying is assuming a little black kid in min knows about a white up and coming rock god in the mid 70s without internet cable etc is a stretch. There's no way her face is pulled tight...she has big laugh lines which is common with age...I have them. The reason she has some difficulty speaking is most likely caused by her nervousness and possibly a bit of dry mouth and whatever dental work she may have had. I don't even think Apollonia has any fillers in her face. I think she's just doing her best to age gracefully...and she's pulling it off.
Noo what happened to her face?! Damn Apollonia, age with grace not with fillers, you dont need that shit. Ive dyed my hair black since I was 14 bc of you, fuck NO if I'd ever go with fillers. Youre still DAMN beautiful and have the same voice and everything. Youre awesome!
I was about to say this. He also did the splits in the videos for "Dirty Mind" and "Sexuality" before that. He more likely borrowed those moves from Little Richard and James Brown, although I wouldn't be surprised if DLR lent inspiration to him.
I've been a VH fan since 79/80 and I recall when Prince came out in the late 70s and then blew up in the 80s with 1999 and his dancing was not influenced by Roth,he was influenced by James Brown same as Michael Jackson!
James Brown is the obvious influence on Prince from hairdo, splits and all around movement... I'm sure the same goes for DLR who was a huge funk/R&B fan with his stage movements and of course a huge bit of DLR stage persona draws from Jim Dandy. Dandy is modest (don't kniw him real well) about it but knows it's true.
@@osiruskat The first time I saw David Lee Roth in Creem Magazine I immediately thought...That guy is exactly like Jim Dandy from Black Oak Arkansas - it was the same look & act. @@osiruskat DLR does what he does on stage because he is a black belt martial artist. Most of his moves are karate kicks converted to look like a dance move. That splits-thing is just a byproduct of what he can do, easily improvised.
Prince didn't care about who she was dating. He had just made the greatest rock movie ever and wanted his co-stars to promote it. Its called business. Prince was too busy living his life to worry about making plans for dividing up his money after it.

Sure it sucks that VH split. But if they wouldnt have, we never would've gotten Crazy From The Heat, (or Eat 'em and Smile) Daves versions of Coconut Grove and Just A Giggolo were masterpieces. And Eat 'em and Smile? Brett Tuggles keyboards on Just Like Paradise. Billy Sheehans bass on Shyboy, Vais solo on Tobacco Road, Daves story-telling lyrics on Big Trouble. Its hands down the rawest, greatest rock album of the late 80's
I can understand Prince wanting to keep her under wraps until after the movie had settled. She was the brightest spot in that film. As for Dave, my esteem for him just climbed a couple more notches. Appolonia was a dream in my teens. Still is, if I'm being honest.

Does anyone have a receipt on video of Prince doing a 'flying split' in the 70's? Mainly before he signed to Warner Bros where Van Halen was also signed?
Maybe there isn't video evidence, but Prince grew up watching James Brown and also took ballet lessons.. You think he wasn't practicing that shit in his teen years.. Trust me, he wasn't doing it because DLR. Take anything that Appolonia says with a grain of salt, she was nobody without PR.
@Gerron Marquel - Yep, but she 61 years of age, she lives in California with all that sun beaming down on her skin, it seems she's had that sh*t injected into her lip area, and she's Hispanic. It's par for the course, but unlike Prince, she still alive, still kicking, and is not under Prince's estate's confidentiality clause, that he began to force people who worked for him after The Revolution to sign. So she's pretty much free to discuss anything about her time with Prince without fear of a violation of clause, if it's still in affect.

@@Bubba.mitchell4603 🖤💜🖤A lot of them are putting words into a dead mans mouth. Prince was a very religious and forgiving person, both of which I think made him very vulnerable to being taken advantage of by people who took advantage in the past. Their the only ones who keep saying that Prince was making amends to them before he passed on. ‘ AMENDS FOR WHAT ‘! Opening the door for each one of them into the entertainment industry! Giving them all the opportunity to make a career for themselves. It’s not Prince’s fault if most of them weren’t meant to be as talented and successful as he was meant to be. It was Prince who opened the door for Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, two talented men, but in this industry it takes a lot more than talent to get in. And when a talented person does get through that door, it usually can take about 10 years for them to really become successful....if ever. Some of them are so bitter about their lack of success without Prince, that one of them has gone around saying that he believes that Prince had him “ blackballed “, which is ridiculous! Because right after ‘ The Time ‘ broke up he got a record deal and put out a few albums in the 80s. If Prince wanted him or anyone else ‘ Blackballed ‘ than before he got signed to a record label would have been the time to do it. He just wants someone to blame because he couldn’t hold on to his record deal, which is not unusual. A lot of people get dropped once they’re sales start to drop. It happened to Morris, Lisa and Wendy and Brown Mark too. You just have to go and try you’re luck else where. Even Prince’s ex- bodyguard, Chick said he wondered if someone from Prince’s camp had him ‘ blackballed ‘ because he couldn’t find work in security after he stopped working for Prince. Working for Prince made him probably the first ‘ World Wide Famous Bodyguard In History ‘, which means that he was known in the industry, but he was also known for having an addiction problem. No one going to hired someone with a known addiction or dependency problem to work security! It’s just easier for all of them to put it on someone else, than to take responsibility for their own actions, behavior and lack of ability. Prince always was an easy target. He gave few interviews. He like a lot of celebrities didn’t get involved in a public ‘ back-and-forth ‘ with any of them. What for? They’re going to say what they’re going to say and believe what suits them the best. The only time I heard Prince comment on those people saying ‘ this and that ‘, was when he appeared on the ‘ Travis Smilely Show ‘. He basically said that he couldn’t understand how “ they “ didn’t think a lot of what they were claiming would eventually get back to him? He really looked sad when he was talking about this. That interview may still be up on RUclips. Everybody has their opinions or assumptions about this depending on how they feel about Prince. If they’re a burch of trolls and haters, they’re loving every second of this. The same if they are some greedy opportunist, desperately trying to chip away or get some of that Prince Legacy on to themselves. Working for Prince or being the inspiration to one of Prince’s many songs or albums, doesn’t mean that you contributed in the actual creation of that song or album. Some of the women who were in Prince’s life act like if he wasn’t attracted to them or hadn’t been hired by him, that he never would have gotten anywhere. Dream on people. Even jimmy Jam knew in high school that Prince was going to make it. He said you don’t work that hard without getting somewhere. But still people are going to do their best to try and rewrite history. For example. Both Lisa and Wendy for decades have tried to include themselves in the creation of one of Prince’s most iconic songs. When Doves Cry. The core fams always knew that wasn’t true, but it went on for decades and because Prince never said anything about it, some people took that to mean it must be true. If you respond to a lie it just takes on a bigger life then if you ignore it, at least that’s what I used to think. Thankfully after Prince’s untimely death, an intelligent interviewer asked Lisa and Wendy to explain exactly what they did in the making of that song. I’ve been waiting for decades for someone to ask that question! They finally admitted that they didn’t write any of the lyrics or music for the song, but they still felt they contributed because Prince was so competitive with them. WOW...and people say that Prince had a huge ego. Prince was competitive with everyone, about everything! How does that make you a co-writer on a song? Oops..Sorry. I’ve been off of social media for awhile so I guess I got carried away. That sometimes happens when I talk about Prince, but at least I don’t get carried away like Prince’s former ex-employees and exes. Stay safe.🖤💜🖤
I hate to be the one to say this Van Halen fans, but Prince was way more musically talented than DLR. David reminded me like a wrestler who was all about showmanship - he was a great fit for Van Halen at the time however. But in terms of pure musical talent between the 2 of them, it isn't even close.
Well, he wrote every lyric and every melody, wrote and directed every video and handled all of the VH art work from day one...and he wrote, produced and was set to direct and star in the movie (along with other members of van halen) "crazy From the heat" which was in pre production before CBS studios went under ..and the next van halen album was to be the soundtrack to it...then vh broke up so then eat'em and smile was to be the soundtrack......anyway, when the movie studio went under he sued the movie company and won the producer fee. So Prince and Dave were both talented musically and in other artistic ways...Is prince more instrumentally talented..yeah..id give him that..prince can play all instruments..Dave can just play guitar at an average level.....they both wrote great songs and both wrote $hitty songs. With Prince though, it was all about him...with Dave in VH it was all about the band. All the focus was on Prince because he was essentially a solo act.
I don't think that's even a question. Roth was one of the best hard rock lyricists and frontmen in the world. Prince is a prodigy musician, excellent songwriter, singer and performer. Both changed music in their times and influenced many, but to compare the two is like trying to look east and west at the same time. It's not worth the effort.
Never realized that Prince fans were so delusional as to believe that he was the originator of every single thing he ever played or performed. Uh, he wasn't. Many people in the L.A. area have spoken at length about how David Lee Roth was doing highly acrobatic moves on stage, including jumping off of Alex Van Halen's bass drums and doing splits, as far back as the mid 70's at some of the backyard parties Van Halen were playing before they even got signed by Warner Bros. I've spoken to people when I lived in L.A. who saw VH, and saw Roth do these moves pre 78'. There is a reason why Van Halen were getting so much attention in the L.A. area prior to their first album being released in 78'. Get over yourself people. Just because you worship Prince doesn't mean he originated every single solitary thing you ever heard him play or saw him perform. Roth has admitted in interviews over the years some of the people he was influenced by, all performers have influences. They all look around and steal to a certain degree. Whether it's people from their formative years, or even sometimes contemporaries. Sorry to tell you, but Prince was no different. He didn't invent the musical wheel. His guitar playing for instance was highly influenced by Hendrix. And he wasn't the first performer to use the Linn drum machine either. Doesn't negate his vital importance, but it doesn't make your fanboy delusions real either.
Who the hell are you talking to? lol...Prince fans are notorious for knowing all of Prince's influences and love pointing them out. And Prince's guitar playing was influenced more by Santana than by Hendrix.
@C J I love this. Thank you. WAY too many people have overidolized every little step Prince did. While he is in my top 4 musical influences, in no way do I fall over in blind worship. I started hearing stories of him in the early 90s when I was up in L.A. playing in various bands. Too much gossip about him that turned out to be true or just "what a prick" stuff. Stuff like that turns me off. I love him and always will. I cried like a busted water faucet when he died. But he's a human and faults need to be accepted as well.
Just 2 get a few things straight.Prince didn"t dance in his live shows until 1982.b4 1982 he was doing some Jagger strut but it was not dancing. He started dancing in 1982 on the 1999 tour.thats when he started doing splits that were coming from the James Brown school of dancing and that had nothing to do witj David Lee Roth.
Dude come off that acid you're tripping on. There ain't nothing in Prince's dancing in rhythm and then jumping off his giant speakers in rhythm, only to land on the floor into a gymnastic split where his genitals kiss the floor in rhythm then bounce back up. all of which isJames Brown's moves influences there ain't anything remotely in Jaggers spastic unrhythmatic, jerking chickenwinged elbows out strutting around moves that he Jagger would do compared to anything James Brown. And he said he thought he was picking up some dance moves from Tina Turner! (hehehe) Cuz he would see her he said perform Shake a Tailfeather and call himself trying to copy her dance style!
That's Apollonia and her drugs talking. I'm sorry but Prince was doing his split long before David Lee Roth had a thought in his head because Prince was copying James Brown and he had been practicing that ever since he been a teenager. You can get out of here with that foolishness. Prince ruined his hips by years of leaping off his giant speakers then landing on the ground in a full split with both legs spreaded way far apart then a pair of scissors where his genitals practically touch the floor. That is what caused him to keep fracturing his hips, that the bones started to give away to breaking and rebreaking and rebreaking over the long periods of years of touring. And then he started to get painful arthritis where the fracturing and rebreaking of bones Cost him his health cause he had to take medications stronger then Motrin. He had to start taking narcotics and that's what started his drugs addictions.
Your comments are half right, but Prince got his influenced scream whoo! and uhn! from Michael Jackson whom got his grunts, screams, and uhn, from James Brown. Brown copied some of Jackie Wilson's screams, and whoo! and his dance styles like his spins and splits.
She's wrong cuz Prince did those splits on the music video for Sexuality and was doing outrageous antics and jumping off of heavy equipment during the triple threat Tour aka 1999 Tour.

He wasn't.
Dave was doing it long before 79' so Prince still came later with that date. Prince was influenced by Dave, it's clear.
@@KingDevilCharger You cannot actually say that. It makes no difference at all. All im saying is assuming a little black kid in min knows about a white up and coming rock god in the mid 70s without internet cable etc is a stretch. Van halen I videos did not have any acrobatics from what i have seen. Dave is way way underrated i love Van halen. And sure it is possible prince copied dave. More likely Prince copied someone.

Her face is pulled so tight she’s having a hard time talking.

Prince was doing the splits before the David Lee Roth impression. Check out the "Red Corvette" video. That's prior to Purple Rain...
Just watched the video. That’s a different kind of spilts. She’s talking about jumping off the piano or drum riser and doing spilts.
@@TheSteveSteele I hope so.

That’s not what she claimed.
Jim Dandy was always so cool about the fact that he knew that David Roth was totally ripping him off. DLR does what he does on stage because he is a black belt martial artist. Most of his moves are karate kicks converted to look like a dance move. That splits-thing is just a byproduct of what he can do, easily improvised.

Not so sure about her story on writing Glamorous Life that was Prince and Sheila
🖤💜🖤It was just Prince. Prince’s engineer and others confirm that. Sheila was bought in when everything else was done. It was that lie she told in her book that ended they’re friendship, sad. Also the song wasn’t about Apollonia like she use to say, it was about Denise Matthews aka Vanity. This everybody jumping on the “ credit train “ is not surprising, but I did expect more from Apollonia. I don’t know why.🖤💜🖤

I’m sure Dave would agree...but who has the biggest balls!
I mean.... Even Dave wouldn't dispute that. You're kind of stating the obvious. Now, Eddie is a different story if we are talking about genius.
But who has the best songs? VH Owned The 80’s
Reality is a friend.
Roth stole his schtick from Jim "Dandy" Mangrum of Black Oak Arkansas.
@ Mike Little, Jim Dandy himself said “whatever he took from me he made it his own”.

Great tidbits! Always knew DLR was the man. Prince was also clearly influenced by Paul Stanley. Just sayn.
And years later Prince would mess up his hip and get hooked on painkillers. Wonder how much this contributed.
Wearing heels and crushing it for decades on stage will not be kind
