I've always felt because of her extreme beauty, she was used a lot throughout her life. It was like a curse for her is what I believe. Prince used her, Hollywood used her and the church she belonged to used her as well. They all had ulterior motives. I am positive she lived the life of heartaches. And yes, I feel the church that she belonged to used her to try to bring in members. They would make sure wherever church she was scheduled to sermon at, they made sure she would be headlined on the lines of "Prince's ex-girlfriend, Vanity". Due to her constant visits to the hospital, racking up a major debt, the church never help pay off the debt. She died owing a lot of money. I believe deep down inside her, her heart trusted too much.
@@kaleoy7584 I agree with you, she sat all 3 of these ladies down. She was a natural beauty. She may have died in debt, but Jesus took her soul with him, she made it, and she became a honorable woman. Prince never got over her death. I wonder did he say sorry to her? I heard he did her bad.
@@chrissimpson6701 I think the Prince before the loss of his baby and the Prince after the loss of his baby were very different men. Losing a child does that to you. I imagine Prince had second thoughts about the person he was in his early days, the music he sang, his interactions with people.
I'm 56 years old and I actually felt tears forming in my eyes when I first started watching this. I LOVE ALL OF YOU LADIES SO MUCH!!! Thank you for making my later teen years AWESOME!!! My two favorite songs that I STILL pump to this very day are "Million Miles" and "Some Kind of Lover"!
I saw Prince, the Time and Vanity 6 at the Oakland Coliseum circa 1982 or 1983 when I graduated high school. It was an amazing experience I'll never forget. The pink netting, fangirls in camisoles. Seeing these ladies sharing experiences takes me back again. At 57 I'll take all the reminders of the Days of Wild I can get :)
That was the 1999 tour in 83' saw Prince for the first time in San Diego that same yr , the same tour. I'm 56 and still have vivid memories of that amazing concert....
Would love to hear more from Susan! She was there from Prince’s first album all they way to purple rain and she was his main girl for years! What did she think when Vanity came along? How did she handle all of that? How did her and Prince part? Did she write Make Up? What songs does she know of that were inspired by her?
I noticed this - I took that avoiding the deep dive was intentional since she was so young. If they dated off and on beginning in 1980 - that puts her . . . young and not going there saves a lot of more unanswered questions. Given that, I think Susann is a little shy. The wide eye look gives me a signal that she had nerves and a slight zone out moment. Great interview -- well crafted questions thus far.
The biggest shock out of all of this is we had no idea Apollonia was such a sweetheart after all of these decades. The public only sees the finished product and not the actual personalities
@@stevejames5357 like what you mean that they don't count? so if it's not a You Tube video, it isn't real? LOL! I even saw Apollonia in her spanish tv interviews back in Mexico, she was always sweet.
The media back then really tried to paint a picture that she & Vanity couldn't/didn't get a long & create a "this one's better than that one" culture like they did with Mariah & Whitney, Brandy & Monica & so on, but then years later, there are pictures of Vanity & Apollonia HANGING OUT! just being good girlfriends/besties. Just to clarify. Denise met Prince at the American Music awards in 1981. She was there with her manager Hal Ray. Both Prince and Rick James noticed Denise that night and flirted with her. And each telling the press that Denise was their wife.
I love how Apollonia isn't afraid to share her gratitude with us! I'm glad she and Susan understand their mark of rock history. (At least Susan's tears seem to say something when Apollonia was telling her memory.)

OK I've waited ages to hear Susan tell her story. I hope the next chapter gives her a little more space. How did she feel about Vanity ? Considering Susan was in a relationship with Prince that had to be a bit of conflict. Also ......Did Susan have any lines that were cut? Brownmark mentioned that he and Susan were supposed to have been close in the movie.
This was amazing! I was literally sitting at the edge of my seat, also , like Apollonia, smile cramps! Also tears. I cant wait till part 2! The Purple Family really needed this!! :) Btw, I watched it twice!! hehe
OMG! This was AWESOME! I'm a grown ass man sitting here wiping tears from my eyes like Susan hearing these stories that I thought I would never hear. Thank you Apollonia, Susan & Brenda for being you and creating a musical and visual expereince that enriched my life!
I was waiting for this. I been a fan of all Princes incarnation’s & Vanity 6 my favorite since I was 11. Glad you grown a good relationship with these two love & blessings ♥️ 🥰
As a longtime fan of both Vanity/Apollonia 6, this is so amazingly special and spectacular. What a beautiful opportunity and beautiful moment. The sheer magnitude of inspiration from the four of you will permeate generations to come. So much is possible for women in music today because of the four of you. Thank you for this and all you’ve done. ✨
Oh my word! Not only did I have the album with the poster. I got it autographed by Vanity 6 at Bad Records in Southfield, Michigan just outside Detroit. I will never forget how nice Denise/Vanity, Susan and Brenda were. All three had on gorgeous turquoise mini dresses, I remember Vanity's had ruffles like a pirate🙂 Genuinely beautiful inside and out and the epitome of class and poise💜💜💜 Word of wisdom to young ladies: If you decide to live with a partner, be careful. Often we end up leaving everything behind just to get out safely. That's how I lost my entire record collection, including the Joni Mitchell my aunt gave me when she knew she was dying of breast cancer. Just be careful out there. Much love to you ladies (Apollonia 6), absolutely one of the best eras of my life thanks to your artistry. 'Happy Birthday Mr. Christian' was my fav! ❤️🙏🏾
WOW!!! This Reunion was perfect! I also got teary eyed watching this. Happy to find out there is a part 2 and 3 hopefully coming out sooner than later.
Nothing I love more than a detailed background story to the greatness I grew up loving, and these ladies delivered! And kudos to Seth for asking the questions the fans always wondered ❤
I'm hear mainly for Susan because she seemed to have disappeared for so long. But I glad to hear from all of them. I love that Susan and Brenda seemed to both have loved Vanity. It was amazing seeing her life change over the years. She was gone way too soon. I wonder if Susan ever knew how many of those early songs were dedicated to her?
Apollonia and Seth, loved Pt. 1 with Susan and Brenda. The Triple Threat tour was my first MPLS concert. What a way to indoctrinate me into this lifetime journey of funk and roll. The 1999 tour concert was in Hartford, CT during a massive snowstorm in 1983. Look forward to Part 2.
48:47 - I never considered how The Revolution and The Time felt about not being included in the Rolling Stone magazine article. At the time, I was a child. My young mind couldn't process the impact of that decision.
I still have the Vanity 6 album with the poster in my storage locker😊! Got it in Hong Kong as a US import for $3 US 40+ years ago, those good old days😢! Prince & Vanity, R.I.P🙏!
@travismclaurin9419 I still have both albums & the 12" of 'drive me wild' in my locker. They were in mint condition the last time I checked, but that was years ago. Sadly, they might be molded by now😞! Miss the 80s...
This group reminds me of Charmed. It started with 3 sisters and one left us. And a 4th sister came along. Like Prue, I will Always Love the stories on Vanity. She was such a mystery. And the 3 really carry both her and Prince's legacy.

Okay!!! I have to watch Purple Rain mostly alone. Because I have a habit of reciting the movie to much while doing the routine’s through out the movie. Even the part where Apollonia smashed her foot in the door. One of my favorite movies.
I REALLY enjoyed this. Been a fan of the Vanity/6 Since High School. I actually wrote a long positive review of the Apollonia 6 album when I was music editor of my junior college newspaper.
This was everything I hoped for and more! Apollonia and Seth, I want to thank both of you. I'm going through a lot in my life right now and your channel brings me a lot of joy. Oh my God I am so glad this came across my recommendations. I loved Apollonia six vanity six and loved everything prince did, and so to me like he had this massive family of other entertainers. Got to say had a massive crush on Susan when I was 15. Remember buying the first vanity six album and my grandmother said I don’t girls in their underwear. I had no answer lol then of course purple rain came out and then it’s Apollonia six just an amazing movie. Apollonia was amazing. Everybody involved was amazing. @Cathy Glover good to see you posting! My best to you, your family, and Hayley !
THIS ALLLL THIS!!!!
Yesss
Close like in a relationship? Cuz he and Susan could also have been sister & brother--they kinda have the family vibe that way.
Yep, she looked like she was about to go into it and then swerved. She has the loveliest laugh though.
@@newhorizonsforfifty2833 It's well documented that they were in a relationship.
Apollonia saw Brenda and knew she couldn’t SPIN the truth like she wanted to 😂
OMG ....this was such a great interview 💜💜💜💜....Brenda and Susan and Vanity ,Appollina was my alter ego ..as teenage girl but in a good way ...
This was amazing! I was literally sitting at the edge of my seat, also , like Apollonia, smile cramps! Also tears. I cant wait till part 2! The Purple Family really needed this!! :) Btw, I watched it twice!! hehe
💜💜💜 You could feel the "Purple Ladies Love" in the room! 💜💜💜
OMG! This was AWESOME! I'm a grown ass man sitting here wiping tears from my eyes like Susan hearing these stories that I thought I would never hear. Thank you Apollonia, Susan & Brenda for being you and creating a musical and visual expereince that enriched my life!
Absolutely amazing to see all 3 of you together.
Such a beautiful reunion 💜💜💜
Grew up watching these ladies can't believe I'm seeing them together 40 yrs later.
I can’t wait for part 2 , 3, and 4!! Love you ladies!!!
I was waiting for this. I been a fan of all Princes incarnation’s & Vanity 6 my favorite since I was 11. Glad you grown a good relationship with these two love & blessings ♥️ 🥰
I'm here to watch this for the second time. 💜
All three had on gorgeous turquoise mini dresses, I remember Vanity's had ruffles like a pirate🙂 Genuinely beautiful inside and out and the epitome of class and poise💜💜💜
Word of wisdom to young ladies: If you decide to live with a partner, be careful.
THANK YOU FOR THIS! My 13 year old self is beaming with joy!
💜💜💜 Thank you for reuniting this beautiful group of women!
Nothing I love more than a detailed background story to the greatness I grew up loving, and these ladies delivered! And kudos to Seth for asking the questions the fans always wondered ❤
Thanks!
This is absolutely amazing! Thank you so very much. We love you all!💜💜💜
Loved this!! Susan was always my crush. Prince had exquisite taste. Thanks for all the great memories ladies. The 80s were the BEST! ❤❤❤
FINALLY I’ve waited a lifetime for this
Great podcast! I had the opportunity to see Prince, The Time and Vanity 6 in concert! Wow! Just wow! Still enjoying the Minneapolis sound to this day!
I never realized how strong Susan's accent was.
Yes, I still have the Vanity 6 and Apollonia 6 albums. But they're scratchy vinyl.
@travismclaurin9419 I still have both albums & the 12" of 'drive me wild' in my locker. They were in mint condition the last time I checked, but that was years ago. Sadly, they might be molded by now😞! Miss the 80s...

I cannot Wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love this!!! Needing Parts 2 & 3 so much right now! ❤❤❤
i cannot wait for the next parts!!😫 i loved this smmmm
This group reminds me of Charmed. It started with 3 sisters and one left us. And a 4th sister came along. Like Prue, I will Always Love the stories on Vanity. She was such a mystery. And the 3 really carry both her and Prince's legacy.
Vanity 6 are the mothers of all girl groups! They are true pioneers and definitely deserve more credit.
The Supremes: “Hold my beer…”
Motown girl groups set the standard:
The Marvelettes - Motown's 1st number one song
The Supremes
Martha and the Vandellas
Yeah no lol
@@byfaithwalking1529 I said all "girl groups" not Motown groups, Motown was its own universe, as cool as they were no one was free or independent, Motown was the system.
@@videoplusdvd yeah, ask Diana Ross why she left Motown. There were no "girl/boys groups" in Motown, there were only Motown products. Vanity 6 were cool, independent and funky.
This popped up on my feed (when I woke up way too early on my day off), and I automatically clicked & subscribed. Thank you for this exclusive plethora. - Fred
Same oddly!
Okay!!! I have to watch Purple Rain mostly alone. Because I have a habit of reciting the movie to much while doing the
routine’s through out the movie. Even the part where Apollonia smashed her foot in the door. One of my favorite movies.
This is so very touching Susan and Appolonia crying and the sweet and exiting memories of Brenda WOW! Great questions too!!
I REALLY enjoyed this. Been a fan of the Vanity/6 Since High School. I actually wrote a long positive review of the Apollonia 6 album when I was music editor of my junior college newspaper.
damn im in highschool now
WOW WHAT A GREAT INTERVIEW. AMAZING STORIES. I WONDER IF VANITY WERE ALIVE IF SHE WOULD'VE AGREED TO BE A PART OF THIS????
I don't think so. She threw away everything from that life.
This was everything I hoped for and more! Apollonia and Seth, I want to thank both of you. I'm going through a lot in my life right now and your channel brings me a lot of joy. I get so excited every time you guys do a new interview, no matter who it is. Thank both so much for the time and energy you put into your content💜💖😘
Appollonia 6!! I absolutely loved this! Just gorgeous women!!
I have been waiting for this for a very long time. I'm over the moon!
As 15 when purple rain came out I’m 55 now with a few grandchildren, and it just warmed my heart so much to see the three ladies together again, of course Denise/vanity past on God rest her soul but this really made my day.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
omg I can t wait to see part 2, I'm in my office watching this and crying when you guys are talking about the Rolling Stone magazine. Apollonia when I saw you in my JR high years I told myself I wanted to be like you. The farthest I ever have done is dress up like you lol #chicana power!! ( when I should be working) thank you so much for sharing your stories Brenda, Apollonia and Susan. Love you guys from Fresno Purple Family thanks for leaving a legacy for us women.
So happy for all of you to get together, again!
This was by far the most interesting and entertaining interview to date. The warmth and friendship between all of you - combined with the stories - made this hour seem like 5-mins. I can't wait for part two.
Now THIS is amazing!! They all look fabulous!!
All Eyes On This !!!! 🙌🏾
This was amazing. I am so glad you brought the group back together. Thank you for doing this.
Excited for this, I've missed this podcast :-), glad it's back
Loved the interview!! Can't believe 40 years almost to this day (Feb 27th 1983 Ann Arbor, Mi) I got to see the legendary 1999 tour live I was only 4 years going on 5 💜
Funny😅 i was at that same Ann Arbor, Mi Concert..i went to a couple also the Detroit, Mi show...
@@gr3181 I did a deep dive on the 1999 last year and I did some research I saw that Prince did like 8-10 shows in Detroit alone ppl don't talk about that I was amazed how many shows he did in a row!! These artist don't even do a fraction of that today I thought that was amazing. Its not ironic he put the Detroit show on his "1999" Deluxe album for the live shows.
LEGENDS. 💜
All I can say y'all brought back some great memories loved both albums vanity 6 and Apollonia 6 and wore the grooves off those albums I was completely surprised by this interview. Thanks for sharing.🤓
Awww, Thank you Mr. Seth! You all look great! Memories............... Missing you 4ever Prince!
