VLAD don't 4get that Prince used his earnings from Purple Rain 2 construct his personal Recording Studio, Paisley Park, leaving him with no overhead 2 rehearse 4 tours and record albums and movies on a yearly basis! Indicative of his brilliance.
Prince was official, man. He was an absolute icon. During his hey day it was Prince, Michael, and Madonna (not necessarily in that order). But those three ruled that era of pop culture.
Back then movie theaters would show double features and you could stay in the theater and watch as long as you want. Every time a new movie came to my theater Purple Rain was still playing with it. I've lost count how many times me and my friends saw Purple Rain
Here’s a bit of trivia: Richard Pryor’s short lived production company Indigo productions got the script for Purple Rain b4 anyone. Jim Brown who was Vice President presented it to Pryor. Pryor didn’t know who Prince was and rejected the project. It went to another studio and the rest is history.
Well, actually it went to another production company, their own, Purple Rain was financed independently with Prince's money, Then after the first footage, a Studio gave it green light, that was Warner Bro, that basically owned the project.

PRINCE did a lot of maturing since that time. I dont agree with a lot of things Prince did back then. I have a feeling that it had a lot to do with his age. Afer all, Prince was only 22 when he formed the TIME. Seeing how successful Jimmy and Terry turned out, The band would still eventually break up, even if Prince allowed them to work with other artist.
Probably? In recent years his royal badness wouldn’t let the Time go out and earn some $ as ‘’the Time’’. He owned the name and wouldn’t let them use it!
@@jonathanhanser5914 They were allowed to perform as the TIME, but not record with the name. Also, Prince himself had to lease the name. And when it became available to purchase, that was the TIMES opportunity to own the name........Always blaming Prince for something.

Everyone knew Appallonia was Vanity replacement in the movie. The entire character was based on Vanity. While she replaced Vanity in the movie, she never replaced her in his life. Prince was chasing what he had with Vanity and never found it.
Well, your wrong. Prince need it to keep going with the movie, people leave movies, happen all the time, he got another actress, that's all. No deeper meaning.
That's actually what Morris book was pretty much called. Unfortunately he doesn't tell Prince's actual story. David Z does a better job of speaking about the demo that got him signed to Warner Bros. because he recorded it personally. He speaks about it here, including how Prince played all the instruments. David Z (from 11:20) - ruclips.net/video/_7FVYX7tgy8/видео.html Prince can't speak anymore, but fortunately some care about his legacy, genius, and decades of music supporting people in their lives. Chris Moon hired Prince at Moonsound after working with Champagne, he speaks at length about Prince here, including teaching him studio craft, how to make his own demos, contacting Owen Husney who helped Prince get his record deal. NahMeanSlime ? He had a few rolez after PURPLE RAIN. He wuz n MOVING, wit Richard Pryor & a TV show, dat I know of. I think his drug addiction, drailed any acting prospectz.
Ron Beck He also did Graffiti Bridge with Prince which was a sequel to Putple Rain. It came out in 1990. Of course there was Under The Cherry Moon, which came out in 1986 with Prince and Jerome starring but Morris wasn’t in there.
So yeah Prince underwrote the financing for the movie. He took major financial risk so he deserved to reap the reward. Morris admittedly should have been paid more, but had the movie flopped financially Prince would have been out a lot of money. Since revenue turned out to be 10x expenses, obviously Prince was due a good portion of the profit.
You know when Morris goes Prince had them doing some stupid Shxx. I question that. Because Prince had them doing lessons for a reason. The dancing was important, because of the discipline. Prince was helping them to open their horizons for the process..
@2conscious Morris wouldn't show up to the set on time or at all. ruclips.net/video/ZuxEYzHk62c/видео.html He would have been fired on any other set, or not hired due to his zero training or experience. Stupid indeed.
@2conscious First of all Sir. I have a lot of reverence for both Morris and Prince. I don't have to know them to interject my thought. I I myself as an artist who grew up with their music in the 80's was inspired by these men to do what I do. I know what it's like to prepare for something.
@2conscious That' the reason why I didn't like the way he said that. Because everything could only be an asset to the process. He can say what he want. This is a comment section . I called him out for that. Because ,kids should know it's about the process.
@2conscious That's the first time I heard Morris described it as stupid shxx. Nobody else ever did. They were confounded, but they respected it. I didn't enjoy hearing that, because I train young people for this business as well. He should've known better, That movie was very auspicious.
While these interviews will not affect Prince legacy, It's gonna turn some people away from Morris Day. Can't say Prince was a saint, but weighing the good and bad, he gave Morris an opportunity of a lifetime. The rest was up for him to take it to the next level, instead of dogging Prince name for a profit.
In glad the Morris and The Time did go on to do really well. Look at what Terry and Jimmy have done. You can tell, like someone else mentioned, Morris was not trying to bash Prince but I do appreciate the honesty about it all.
@Anthony Clark - Pretty much the way I read it, the studio did not think the movie was going to do well, so all the things like archiving deleted scenes pretty much went into the trash once the final cut was completed. Yes, later (for film editing) studios changed that practice, because they began to realize that maybe a reissue of a movie might cause a failed movie or one that grossed below expectations, to get a second chance. But for Purple Rain, what we see is all that's left.
100 yrs from now we'll still be talking about how incredible Prince was......and how he literally smashed some of the most beautiful woman to walk the Earth..... #legend #Prince
When Prince got on, he went back and got all his homeboys from Minneapolis. Morris, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Jesse Johnson. They’re all doing well today. Morris didn’t even wanna do the movie. He was on drugs and getting fucked up everyday. They had to drag him to the set. He got to be a star from the movie. That role was handed to him, he got a platinum album off of it and tours today because of it. He writes it all in his book...which he got from knowing Prince. He’s doing ok.
Morris didn't want to do the movie because of no jam or Lewis he never liked the replacements I heard Jessie say that he wouldn't even talk to them.. this is just my opinion I'm not basing it on anything other than that
Dwayne Beamon That’s right. That’s why he didn’t wanna do it. He did it though and he accepted the money. Nobody knew that it would make so much. Prince could have gotten only $50,000 too.

It was a risk. He believed in his vision. Plus I heard there was more to the story. $50,000 is a little low to support a whole band though. Morris and the whole Minneapolis sound are a force of their own. Kudos to Morris and Jerome for first time movie. They helped Make the movie. Continued Color of Success for them.
Plus remember the time was princes group legally, they came with his contract plus i think 2 other groups, .....much lov for morris day but i don't think him and prince had a partnership ,it was more like boss to worker who happen 2 be friends ....if it wasn't that I'm sure morris would have sued him.
You're right. That Minneapolis sound took over for a minute. Between Prince, The Time, Alexander O'Neal, Andre Cymone they were killin' the game for a minute.
Absolutely ! Back in my day, if you played in James Browns band, you got paid VERY little. ( I knew one of the trumpet players) James Brown took all the risks, so he deserved the lions' share of money. However, when you left the band and could put " James Brown Band " on your resume', doors would open. …...Bootsy Collins will testify to that. He didn't like James Brown, but without being in that band, nobody would ever had heard of him and Funkadelic would have never picked him up. @@lwmson I agree with just about everything that you’ve said. Apollonia absolutely crushed it as far the movie roll. Both women are absolutely astonishing as far as looks are concerned. I think it boils down to the look that a guy is more attracted to. I’m just more attracted to Vanity, but I do rate them as equal in the looks department. In closing, I think Apollonia would make the better wife. A young Vanity was Wild And Loose. Thanks for the conversation.
@@barnyard4068 Yeah, if I had to pick one of two to marry, I would go w/Apollonia. I'll never forget that scene in PR where she stripped down to her underwear before she jumped into that lake. God ... you couldn't have dreamed of a hotter woman! Thank you for the convo too!
I want to thank Morris for giving Vanity aka Denise Matthews Credit by letting Vlad know that Apollonia was not the original choice for the film. Vanity was the first choice 💕💕💕💕
💜💜💜
🤷🏾♀️
Vanity was tired of not getting the money she deserved ...just like Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis...Motown Records scooped her up and Berry Gordy made sure she had a juicy role in " The Last Dragon" movie !
She was doing coke also,,,so those mourning filming sessions wasn't gonna cut it.
Always a Prince fan but my God how I LIVE for The Time! I have all their albums too! They’re fun, get the party hype and have swag! Love me some Morris Day!
When you listen to the time you’re listening to prince

No matter how much I like Morris , he was never kicking ass .... Prince is way above everyone else , He is in a League of His own ! The best Ever !
My exact thoughts too. Thank you for saying it.
See now your just haten Morris Day made Purple Rain the movie would have been a Flop without him
I am 19 years old and i grew up with The Time. Morris Day. You are my idol. Thank you for the good music 🎶
Purple Rain is one of my favorite movies of all time and I love the The Bird scene.
Prince still got props in my Book for Smashing Apollonia💯 She still bad til this DAY💯🔥

Back then movie theaters would show double features and you could stay in the theater and watch as long as you want. Every time a new movie came to my theater Purple Rain was still playing with it. I've lost count how many times me and my friends saw Purple Rain
Byron Kennedy, right! We did the same thing. Was in theater all day watching Purple Rain like it was a Blu-ray on repeat. ...lol

Vanity and Apollonia look nothing a like. Vanity had a more exotic look and she was darker. Apples is beautiful too but not nearly as gorgeous as Vanity.
You're so right. Denise had a beautiful soul too. I was blessed to befriend her several years before her passing.

There's one scene when Morris shows some remorse after taunting Prince after his father's attempted suicide in a close up...I never noticed it until years later, and really changed my opinion of his character after seeing it..
I have seen the movie many times and that scene only clicked with me a year ago, good catch
Edit: Also explains why Morris was so eager to dance to Prince’s Baby I’m a Star following his Purple Rain performance
@@freedamerican5243 how do you watch a movie that many times and never get that part? geez, he's the antagonist you see cheering and celebrating at the end.
Morris is cool as a fan. And he is very smart, he is like "I ain't gonna say nothing I can't take back or regret because it can't be taken back."
As great as Prince was he was probably a control freak and he could've treated the Time better than he did!
PRINCE did a lot of maturing since that time. I dont agree with a lot of things Prince did back then. I have a feeling that it had a lot to do with his age. Afer all, Prince
was only 22 when he formed the TIME. Seeing how successful Jimmy and Terry turned out, The band would
still eventually break up, even if Prince allowed them to work with other artist.
Probably?
In recent years his royal badness wouldn’t let the Time go out and earn some $ as ‘’the Time’’.
He owned the name and wouldn’t let them use it!
True statement.
@@jonathanhanser5914 They were allowed to perform as the TIME, but not record with the name.

Purple rain is one of the greatest movies and songs of all times hands down 🐐
Had the pleasure to see Morris Day and The Time at House of Blues in Myrtle Beach many years ago. I was front row and after the last song I got high fives from Morris and Jerome. Sounds weird but I didn’t want to wash my hands after because I didn’t want to lose that feeling! Incredible show!
Whenever, I watched purple rain, I look for Morris Day scenes😀❤

So he and his band got ripped off in the end and he is being very classy about it. Love Morris

@npgSymboL I completely agree, but I guess it depends on how much he was ripped of.
Morris is a great interview. He's candid, but still offers up a lot of information if you read between the lines.
Can’t forget Wendy and Lisa Badasses as well
Prince and Micheal was Savvy businessmen fasho!
I know I wasn't there, but this has to be one of the most revealing behind the scenes info ever about Prince.
Although we know he wouldn't attempt this shit if Prince was alive, thank you Morris Day. 😄
I want to see the deleted fight scene between Prince and The Time.
There’s a very short clip of it in the movie trailer. In it you see a guy grabbing Prince and Prince turning around and punching him in the face.
@@freedamerican5243 yes, that's what I'm talking about. I heard they whooped his ass in the scene.
Everyone knew Appallonia was Vanity replacement in the movie. The entire character was based on Vanity. While she replaced Vanity in the movie, she never replaced her in his life. Prince was chasing what he had with Vanity and never found it.
I agree.
Really sad when you put it that way!
Well, your wrong. Prince need it to keep going with the movie, people leave movies, happen all the time, he got another actress, that's all. No deeper meaning.
Love both Prince and Morris! Both have Awesome music!😀❤👍

Interview should be called Morris day talks about prince lol
Lol Riiiight, guess I gotta buy his book in order to find out about him. Learning more about Prince tho'!
Or , “Vlad asks Morris Day about Prince”
That's actually what Morris book was pretty much called. Unfortunately he doesn't tell Prince's actual story. David Z does a better job of speaking about the demo that got him signed to Warner Bros. because he recorded it personally. He speaks about it here, including how Prince played all the instruments.

Prince can't speak anymore, but fortunately some care about his legacy, genius, and decades of music supporting people in their lives.
Chris Moon hired Prince at Moonsound after working with Champagne, he speaks at length about Prince here, including teaching him studio craft, how to make his own demos, contacting Owen Husney who helped Prince get his record deal.

Purple rain has a really good soundtrack
Morris Day reminds me of my Uncle who came from the military(Navy!)! My uncle loved to dance around all crazy & stuff & draw attention to himself!
He didn’t play any instruments but he could have portrayed Morris probably to a T!

"He was hitting everything." 😂😂😂😂😂😂
You know when Morris goes Prince had them doing some stupid Shxx. I question that. Because Prince had them doing lessons for a reason. The dancing was important, because of the discipline. Prince was helping them to open their horizons for the process..
@2conscious Morris wouldn't show up to the set on time or at all.
ruclips.net/video/ZuxEYzHk62c/видео.html
He would have been fired on any other set, or not hired due to his zero training or experience.
It was stupid to Morris at the time. Relax.
Morris is a smooth fella !!!!
*Lake Minnetonka* .... ooooh the memories!!! ☔️☔️☔️
One of the greatest movie villains imo. Pretty impressive from someone with zero acting experience.
While these interviews will not affect Prince legacy, It's gonna turn some people away from Morris Day.
Can't say Prince was a saint, but weighing the good and bad, he gave Morris an opportunity of a lifetime.
The rest was up for him to take it to
the next level, instead of dogging Prince name for a profit.
Strange, because it was made to look like Apollonia and Prince were together but she was married and they kept that a secret for Promo.

@Anthony Clark -
Pretty much the way I read it, the studio did not think the movie was going to do well, so all the things like archiving deleted scenes pretty much went into the trash once the final cut was completed. Yes, later (for film editing) studios changed that practice, because they began to realize that maybe a reissue of a movie might cause a failed movie or one that grossed below expectations, to get a second chance.
But for Purple Rain, what we see is all that's left.
yes
@Anthony Clark I hate to say this but I don't think it's ever gonna happen I have every anniversary edition of Purple Rain and none of em is on there
Prince was a true Gemini. Rip🙏🏾
The music was everything about that movie
For Vladimir to ask, "Was Vanity and Prince dating?" continues to confirm he knows nothing about classic, Black American culture. What an INCREDIBLY dumb question.🙄. I love Prince's music. As far as the PR movie there was a lot of bad acting, but it's still a classic film. I think Vanity and Prince had more chemistry than him and Apollonia, so the movie would probably be better with Vanity. Apollonia was and still is gorgeous. Morris and Jerome were cool too.
Morris Day... Legend!
I personally think the Purple Rain movie wouldve been better with Vanity in it.
Me too. She had the best chemistry with Prince.
I REMEMBER Morris Day was in that Richard Pryor Movie called "Moving" when he was talking to Richard Pryor's Daughter in the Movie
Apollonia and Vanity was fine as hell in the 80's... Especially Apollonia... Shit, I remember going back as a young kid in the 90's and watching Purple Rain for the first time and thinking, "Shit, Apollonia can get the business..."

I agree. Both ladies were smashable.
I love love love Morris Day and the whole Time era but.... if Prince fought for and got the movie deal and used his OWN money to help make this movie plus write the songs, ( cowrote/ wrote the Time songs and Vanity6/ Appollonia6 songs and of course his Own band) Well, I think more Money should go his way.
@Keishia Fells.... The biggest hits on Purple Rain were written by Wendy and Lisa.
Jeffrey Phillips purple rain was written by prince with the exception to computer blue
Morris Day swallowed his pride and is STILL getting paid for that sacrifice. Even to this day. He's smart.
