House may have said that line too bluntly, but it shows how much he cares for Wilson
He doesn't care for Wilson as much as he cares for himself. He had a huge problem just being there to give Wilson moral support because he was anxious about being alone. Sure, he showed up in the end, but it doesn't mean his initial refusal wasn't selfish.
Der Walter you clearly don't get what House was going doing. House was always going to be there because he cares for Wilson.
House told Wilson he wasn't going to be there so Wilson wouldn't go through the operation.
@@cal593He literally wanted to die because he couldn't stand the idea of being responsible for Amber and causing Wilson pain. There are so many examples of him actually caring, such as him actually showing up for this surgery.

House knew tucker was a scumbag
House also in a previous episode he risked his life to try to save Amber Wilson's girl
@@cal593 All feeling is selfish in my opinion.
Wilson's smile is not only because house was there for him. It is also because he feels SAFER around House, he knows if anything goes wrong, house will do absolutely everything he can to not let his friend die.
House would have done that regardless. The smile was because he came through. Because it was a confirmation to wilson that his faith that house would show wasn't misplaced
"Cause if you die, I'm alone." That may be the most vulnerable and most scared we've ever seen House.

The small smile of Wilson, barely a movement on his cheek, when he sees House in the windows of the operation theater is everything.

@@KarlenkoFisherYeah me neither
@@mosslizard Wilson wanted to give this man and his former family a chance, but when he saw his friend's conclusions on with whom he would want to stay when you're living and not dying, he got disappointed. And besides that, Wilson saved his life, at least she could make an effort and remember his name right.
@mitru98 Didn’t his friend call him Jim before they went in to surgery? Nicknames can be reserved to people you know closely, he’s fine with his close friend calling him Jim, but not this woman he hardly knows. It shows that he’s unaccepting, even contemptuous towards her.
You answered that perfectly. 👍
If you pay attention, House massages his leg absently right after Wilson asks if he's going to be there. House is stressed. Worried. His leg pain is sometimes a psychological stress response-- no wonder he's addicted to pain pills. His entire life is drama and stress.
Hugh Laurie is such an incredible actor. I love how most English/UK-based actors are classically stage trained. They really embody the characters and include even the smallest of details because of it. Of course, any actor can do that, but it’s certainly more common amongst that strain of actor lol
What did I miss? Why is Wilson going into surgery as well?

7:13 The idea of Wilson dying makes House's leg starts to pain :(
The pain will be his only company without Wilson....
*"Everybody lies. Even me."* - House, probably.
House doesn't really try to hide the fact that he can lie through his teeth and most people will believe every word he says. Even the ones who should know better.
@@kathrynhoward4196his lies are usually just extremely misleading truths, sometimes they are entirely lies
Stfu. You aren't witty or amusing, you're an a$$hole.
The it’s James at the end just signaled Wilsons disappointment. Jesus.
Yeah, he really didn't like his friend choosing to rely on his GF when his ex wife was Cleary more capable and level headed. The GF is going to panic, make bad calls, and jeopardize his life. Wilson was clearly feeling regret at that moment because he feels his efforts will be undone.
@@ScarletBrimstone i think it's more than just his disappointment in the guy choosing the younger gf versus his wife. It's about how ungrateful and selfish the "friend" is; not seeing the people who really stepped up and were there for him. Relying on his ex wife when things were tough, and then leaving her for the "new cool thing" when he no longer needed her. Wilson finally realized at the end what House was saying since the beginning of the episode, that this guy isnt a good friend; he only cares for himself and not the people around him. I think it also signaled that Wilson didnt want to be his friend anymore, because he hated the nickname but never had the guts to tell him
@@StackACat it's all of that plus, i think it's implied Wilson had "buyer's remorse" about giving a piece of his liver there. I mean it's a big surgery, literally risked his life for the guy, something he said he would only do for a true friend, and the guy himself sorta admitted at the end there that they weren't true friends, AFTER he got his liver from him. I mean he didn't say "we're not real friends" or anything but the statement "the person you want when you're dying isn't the same as the one you want when you're living" implies that he basically was only using Wilson when he was dying for special doctor treatment and for a transplant, but once he's healthy, he'll just move away with his new gf when he no longer has any use for them (Wilson and ex-wife).
Everyone's comments are so good. I didn't see the episode prior to this one, so the comments really cleared up background questions. As the Behavior Panel would say, correcting Ashley to the more formal name, Wilson erected a barrier to both the girlfriend and friend, instantly.
@@l.a.3479 oh, excuse me! A minor typo must have rendered my entire comment meaningless! Whatever will I do?
4:17 I always love the small details they add for later conflict. The ex wife takes his hand and the new girl is unhappy about it. Further in the scene you can still see the new girl is bothered by it.
Especially when he chooses the ex as the proxy.

If You Die, I’m Alone! so don't die god damnit
You can see the relief wash over James face as he sees House and passes out
why does House need his liver in say the next 6 months?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Can't relate the person I want when I'm dying is very much the same person I want when I am living, asleep and anytime
Same
There is a lot we don't know, mainly why they divorced.
When I was going through a very hard time in my life, I had two sisters who helped me. The one irritated me, the other I knew I could count on. The one that irritated ended up going full-blown narcissist on several of our family members, and is now no longer in my life(her choice as I called her bluff). The one that I wanted around wants me around, too. We have each other's backs as much as we can. What is funny is how we didn't get along as children, but now are close.
Highly likely the ex wife didn't want him back either. Sometimes you are there for somebody because you share a child that will be effected and have shared a life in the past.
Doesn't mean you should revisit the past that is "the past" for a reason
Absolutely!
The House and Wilson relationship is one of the greatest tv relationships ever written

@@ItCameFromTheSkyBeLo Idk if you know this but House is indeed a Sherlock Holmes adaptation! House and Wilson literally are Holmes and Watson! It's a lose adaptation ofc - but it's there :)
Such a good episode. It proves why House and Wilson are such good friends; House will only ever be House, and, even if that's hard for Wilson to deal with sometimes, it's honest. Plus, House needs Wilson in a way that is even more critical than Wilson's other "friend" needing part of Wilson's liver.
7:44 I just personally had a House moment, when Wilson's friend said "Thanks Jim", I instantly thought 'Who the hell is Jim!?' 🙃

This is the exact moment when Jim became James. Insane.
Bravo Vince!
He was James all along (except to this douchebag) - and there is absolutely nothing ''insane'' about it, call down.
I do quite like how the patients girlfriend or new wife didnt know what to say when Wilson told them about the surgery, just saying whatever he (the patient) thinks. His ex? Asked about treatment, if hes strong enough for anesthesia. Asking about the treatment for assurance, or just for clarity. And then again later, his ex knows what to ask. Showing dependability.
I think it's just because she's older or more mature. the current girl is acting from fear.
It's because she went through him having cancer the 1st time, and already has a report with Wilson.
the way wilson walks out of houses office so slowly made me really sad for him. Wilson isn’t real but I have such a connection with his character.
But then all faith is restored when he sees House before passing out, signified by the tiniest of smiles visible under the mask.

The person you want when you're dying should be the person you want when you're living, if they're not the same person you don't deserve them
That is so simplistic. You must be very young.
@@evygaspar Not that young, just being realistic. If they aren't the same person you just don't deserve them. You should die how you lived. It's your choice how you live. Call that simplistic if you want, but it's realistic and fair
It's really not that simple. Many people want different people with them at death. Maybe to resolve issues or to not be disturbed during or to disturb the people there with your death. Everyone lives and dies different In their controlled ideal worlds.

I like how we got to see Wilson play diagnostician for a scene. Gave me that feeling like Watson trying his hand at a mystery.
considering House M.D. is a loose adaptation of Sherlock Holmes it's vermy much the case :)
I hate this patient. Never bothered to know Wilson's real name. Made Wison his doctor donate his liver to him and then went back to his girlfriend. He was with his ex-wife just until his health problem was resolved.
I missed the reason Wilson was.donating his liver, or a piece of it. When did that happen? 🙄
Also clearly, his ex was amazing and he just went for a younger model- clever casting.... Really not a nice guy
Interesting how after he delivers that sentence, he very subtly looks at the camera, like pulling us into his feelings. That was some pretty interesting directing.
Seeing someone you love die infront of you breaks you. House knew that

Greg House saved my life. In my deepset part of my life many years ago.. he was the only one "understanding" I actually feel his pain is main pain. Every painfull look or every painfull step I feel the same as he does. My pain and his pain were one. One misssery depresion opioid adiction. But he also give me hope I really can change it. I was 20, 22 when the pain after surgery was huge and nothing expect sniff oxycodone with fentanyl patches worked. I was at college. I finish it of course. I am on suboxone stiill. Byt suboxone only for 8 years. I still do not get his tallen. If you know pain or adiction not very movies or serios shows it so naturally. I believed him. It is strange but I am not the only one. Great show. Excellent show
Best part of this, his team all perking up to help at making house lose a bet.
Lol right😁
Thing is House is not emotionally equipped to handle situations like these, which is why he rather stay away from people

This clip demonstrates the genius of Hugh Laurie's acting. Through micro-expressions that we can't even pin-point, he is letting us know that Hous is absolutely terrified to loose his friend. It's heartbreaking.
I love when House episodes happen in the background and normal people react to his cases.
Wilson reacting to the Pop Corn fumes is awesome.

House saying 'No, that's room 12-A' regarding the argument is a reference to the Argument Sketch by Monty Python. Pretty clever.~
This was when we first see house as a human, my man was Sheldon cooper without the phobias
I think the first Time was when he was in the bus accident. In his mind he said to Amber: "I don't want to feel miserable anymore, here It doesn't hurt (His leg), i want to stay here" or something like that. And Amber: "Well, you can't have everything you want"

How he said it; House doesn't want to be there because he doesn't want to witness Wilson dying in front of him, if the surgery fails.
Or that's how I assume it.
House is just keeping it real, because if all the doctors have a heart of gold like Wilson, they'd all be torn to pieces with every patient needing their very important and limited body parts. House told Wilson it harshly so he could realize his mistake, and Wilson did realize his mistake after the surgery was done.
