Ask your GRANDparents - and that this is a scene in it.

Yeah, shows from this era (and, unfortunately, some shows now) often seem to have a sudden transphobic scene or episode and it's always so jarring. But at least this one has the twist of House using the transwoman as an attempt to ruin the night but it backfiring as neither Wilson or Sam are transphobic and instead just have a good non-bigoted time. It's not perfect, it presents House as transphobic, but that could be read as House just being an awful person, and the rest of the scene refutes his bigotry. So, it's better than I expected it to be.
while the show *is* quite transmisogynistic at times (which isn't the only kind of gag that's become rather outdated in the years since), I think this scene actually avoided that. the set-up is framing the inclusion of the trans woman as some crazy stunt House pulls to ruin the evening, but the punchline is entirely at his expense - the woman is normal and cool and the fact that House thought she wouldn't be makes *him* look like the idiot. while it's hardly affirming, it *is* subtly *accepting* - at least, by the standards of the show and most other mainstream television of it's era.
Ohh… you cut the best part, when Wilson comes out from the bathroom and House said “aaaand… scene!” and fakes a smile to her.
